What is a dummy ticket for a visa?
It is a real reservation that stops short of payment. A seat is held on a scheduled flight, a booking record is created with your name, and you receive an itinerary PDF showing the airline, flight numbers, dates and the booking reference. Nobody has paid the fare, so there is no ticket to fly on. That is the whole point: you can show a plan without spending the fare before you know whether you'll get the visa.
The word "dummy" puts people off, and fairly so. Consulates themselves use the terms "flight reservation", "flight booking" or "itinerary". Use those words in your cover letter and form. A reservation is honest evidence of a plan; calling it a ticket is not.
What it is not: a PDF made in a "ticket generator", an edited copy of someone else's booking, or a document with a reference the airline has never heard of. Those are false documents, and under the Schengen Visa Code a forged or false supporting document is a reason to refuse.[3] We don't make them, and you shouldn't use them. Do embassies accept a flight reservation instead of a ticket?
Many do, and several say so in writing. The wording on official pages is the best guide, so here is what some of them actually say:
- EU Visa Code: Annex II lists a reservation of, or a return or round ticket, as possible evidence of your intention to leave.[3]
- Netherlands: you need a reservation in your name for travel to and from the Schengen area, and "you do not need a paid travel ticket".[4]
- Germany (Singapore): asks for a flight reservation or itinerary printout and says "NO booked ticket is needed".[5]
- Germany (India): the tourism checklist lists "Flight reservation".[6]
- United States: the State Department tells visitor-visa applicants not to make final travel plans or buy tickets until they have a visa.[9]
- Canada: IRCC suggests an itinerary for tourists, which can include copies of flight details.[8]
- United Kingdom: GOV.UK lists flight bookings among documents you should not use as evidence for a visit visa, unless you are transiting.[7] For the UK, you usually don't need one at all.
Not every mission is this relaxed. The Greece checklist in Kuwait asks for a confirmed return ticket with a booking reference.[10] So the honest rule is: read your own mission's list, and if it says confirmed or paid ticket, a held reservation may not satisfy it. When is a flight reservation not enough?
When the official words are "paid", "pre-purchased" or "confirmed ticket". Three common cases:
Entry rules that want a paid onward ticket
For visa-waiver visitors, New Zealand insists that the onward ticket is already paid.[12] Costa Rica's tourism board lists only pre-purchased tickets or cruise passage.[13] A reservation may not satisfy either. Buy a cheap, flexible onward ticket you are actually willing to use.
Consulates with strict checklist wording
Some missions write "confirmed" ticket, as Greece does in Kuwait.[10] Ask the mission or visa centre what it accepts, or buy a refundable fare.
Departure checks in your own country
Some countries check outbound travellers. The Philippines is the best-known example: departure guidelines published by the Bureau of Immigration list a roundtrip ticket among the documents tourists present at primary inspection.[16] Our guide for Filipino travellers covers that in full.
Airlines also enforce onward rules at check-in, using IATA's Timatic database of entry requirements.[17] If the airline's system says your nationality needs an onward ticket, the check-in agent will want to see one.
Visa file or airport check: which job does your reservation do?
Work out which of the two jobs you need done before you book, because the timing and the risk are different.
For a visa application, the reservation sits in a file that an officer reads, sometimes weeks after you hand it in. What matters is consistency: the dates should agree with your form, hotel bookings, insurance and leave letter, and the route should support the consulate you chose. Book it just before the appointment.
For proof of onward travel, the reservation is shown at check-in or at the border, often by a busy agent with a queue behind you. What matters is that the booking opens on the spot and that the rule you are facing accepts a reservation at all. Book it shortly before you fly, carry a printout and the PDF on your phone, and read the entry rule for your passport first.
If you need both, for example a Schengen visa followed by a flight with an onward check, treat them as two separate bookings made at two separate times. One reservation stretched across a month rarely serves either purpose well.
How do you get a dummy ticket for a visa?

How do you check that your reservation is real?
Open the airline's website yourself, choose Manage booking, then type the reference and your last name. A booking that exists will display your name, flights and dates. Emirates, for example, describes its booking reference as a six-character code, separate from the 13-character ticket number on an issued ticket.[18]

When should you book it?
Close to the moment someone will look at it. A held reservation is temporary (up to 2 weeks; the airline decides the exact period), so a booking made three weeks early may be gone by the appointment. We'd book one or two days before. For Schengen, remember the application window: no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before travel.[1] For onward-travel checks at an airport, book it shortly before you fly and check it again the night before.
If your visa comes back with different dates from those you asked for, plan the real trip around the visa and buy your actual ticket then. Nobody expects the held reservation to become your flight.

What is not acceptable is a fabricated or edited document with no booking behind it. Describe what you submit honestly as a "flight reservation", and make sure the reference opens on the airline's own website.

No document guarantees a visa. A reservation shows a credible travel plan; the decision rests on your purpose, finances, ties and history. Germany's missions in India state on their checklist that booking a flight does not speed up processing. Treat the reservation as one tidy piece of a consistent file.
What if my visa is refused after I book?
