Japan is one of the easier visas for Indian travellers to get right, as long as you follow the checklist for your own jurisdiction. On flights, the official wording is quite specific: Japan wants to see which flight brings you in and which one takes you home, with numbers and dates. It does not say you must have paid for them. This guide puts the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) list and the VFS Global checklists side by side, quotes what each one says about flights, and tells you plainly where a held reservation fits and where you should think twice.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Japan?
Yes. MOFA keeps a list of 74 countries and regions whose nationals can visit Japan without a visa for short stays, and India is not on it.[1] So if you hold an Indian passport, you need a temporary visitor visa before you fly, even for a five-day holiday.
A few other points worth knowing:
- Foreign nationals living in India apply through the same VFS route. The Kolkata checklist, for instance, accepts applicants with residence proof in its four states.[7] If your passport is from an exempt country, you don't need a visa at all.
- Indians living abroad apply where they reside. MOFA's eVISA page lists residents of countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia as able to apply online directly.[4]
- Some exempt nationalities have conditions. For example, Thai and UAE nationals are exempt only with an ICAO-compliant ePassport.[1]
Jurisdiction matters inside India too. The Consulate General in Bengaluru, for example, processes applications only for current residents of Karnataka, and asks for residence proof if your passport was issued elsewhere.[8] Apply at the centre that covers where you actually live.
What documents does a Japan tourist visa need?
MOFA publishes a general checklist for single-entry short-term stay visas. For a tourism trip paid for by you, it lists these items:[5]
- Valid passport
- One visa application form
- One photo
- Flight itinerary with flight or ship numbers and dates of arrival and departure
- Proof you can pay for the trip, such as an income certificate, tax return or bank statement
- Itinerary in Japan (a day-by-day plan, on MOFA's own form)
The VFS checklists in India add local detail on top of that core. The Kolkata list, for example, asks for:[7]
- Application form signed to match your passport signature, plus the original passport and a photocopy
- Photographs 45 x 35 mm with a white background
- A covering letter and an NOC or leave approval from your employer
- Personal ITR for 3 years (or an explanation letter) and 6 months of bank statements, stamped and signed
- Hotel reservation for the whole trip, "booking only- not confirmed"
- A day-to-day itinerary on the format VFS publishes
- An itinerary with flight or ship numbers and dates to and from Japan
Bengaluru's list asks for 2 years of ITR acknowledgements, 3 months of salary statements and payslips, and accommodation "blocked" in the applicant's name.[8] If you are going on to a third country after Japan, both Kolkata and Bengaluru want a copy of that country's visa.[7][8]
Practical tip: download the checklist from the VFS page for your own centre on the day you start preparing, and tick it off line by line. The lists differ by jurisdiction, and the person at the counter works from their own list, not a blog's.
What exactly do the official checklists say about flights?
Here is the flight wording, quoted from each document we checked in October 2026:
- MOFA (all nationalities, April 2025 checklist): "Flight itinerary with the flight/ship number and date of arrival and departure to and from Japan."[5]
- VFS Kolkata (Consulate General of Japan, Kolkata): "Itinerary with the flight/ship number and date of arrival and departure to and from Japan."[7]
- VFS Bengaluru (Consulate General of Japan, Bengaluru): "Document to show the flight/cruise schedule to/from Japan."[8]
- VFS Bengaluru, another version on the same site: the same line followed by "(tickets from Bangalore both inward and outward)".[9]
Notice what none of these say. None asks for a paid fare, an e-ticket number or proof of payment. They ask for the schedule: a flight number and a date for the way in and the way out. Kolkata's checklist even states for hotels that it wants a booking "not confirmed", which tells you the consulate is not asking you to spend money up front.[7]

Is a flight reservation enough, or should you buy the ticket?
For most Indian applicants, a verifiable flight reservation is what the wording asks for. It shows the airline, flight numbers, dates and your name, and it carries a booking reference (PNR) that can be looked up on the airline's website. That is exactly an "itinerary with the flight number and date of arrival and departure".
Our honest view is that buying a non-refundable fare before the visa is decided is a gamble you don't need to take. If the visa is refused or delayed, you lose the money. The one place we'd pause is the Bengaluru version that says "tickets ... inward and outward". The checklist does not say paid, and the rest of the line is about the schedule, but if you want certainty, ring the VFS helpline (+91 22 6786 6016, listed by the Embassy) and ask whether a reservation is accepted.[2]
Two things a reservation must never be: invented, or presented as something it isn't. Call it a "flight itinerary" or "flight reservation" in your covering letter. If an officer asks whether it is paid, say no. The Kolkata checklist itself warns that hiding the proper reason for travel can be a cause of refusal, and honesty about documents follows the same logic.[7]

Does the Japan eVISA change the paperwork?
Not much on your side. The Embassy of Japan in India says applicants still hand their applications in at VFS centres "as before", but receive the visa in electronic form instead of a sticker.[3] It covers single-entry tourism of up to 90 days.[3][4] MOFA adds that the eVISA is for travellers arriving by air or by certain scheduled ferries, and that you may be called for an interview.[4]
The big practical change is at the airport. You must show the "visa issuance notice" on a mobile device with internet access. The Embassy is blunt: a PDF, photo, screenshot or printed copy will not be accepted.[3] Keep your phone charged and roaming working.
Do you need a flight itinerary for a multiple-entry visa?
Indian nationals can apply for a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 5 years if they meet one of MOFA's categories, such as two or more visits to Japan in the last three years, or a recent Japan visit plus visits to other G7 countries.[6] MOFA's outline for these categories lists the application form, passport, old passports showing Japanese visas and stamps, and financial documents where relevant. A flight itinerary is not on that outline.[6] MOFA also notes it may issue a single-entry visa after examination, so your VFS centre may still ask for a travel plan. Check the specific multiple-entry checklist for your centre.
Applying for Japan from the Gulf or elsewhere outside India?
Then the Indian VFS lists don't apply to you. MOFA says the eVISA is open online to all foreign nationals residing in Saudi Arabia, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and a few other places, and through accredited agencies for residents of the UAE, Singapore and others, unless they are visa-exempt.[4] MOFA's general single-entry checklist, with its "flight itinerary" line, is the starting point, but each mission can add local requirements, so read the page of the Japanese embassy or consulate covering your city of residence.[5] MOFA publishes separate outlines for nationals of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and several other Gulf states.
Will immigration in Japan check your return ticket?
A visa is not a guarantee of entry. MOFA explains that "landing permission" is granted by an immigration officer at the port of entry when you meet the requirements.[12] Japan does not publish a single onward-ticket rule for visa holders that we could find. For visa-exempt visitors, though, the Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands advises carrying "a fixed-date, confirmed return ticket (E-tickets are also accepted) or onward journey ticket", plus hotel details and proof of funds, to the landing examination.[11]
Our advice follows from that. The reservation is for the visa file. By the time you fly, you should hold a real, paid return or onward ticket, because that is what an officer or airline would reasonably expect at the border. How to prepare your Japan flight document, step by step
Your covering letter, day-by-day itinerary and hotel nights all hang off the arrival and departure dates.
Use a real route from your home city, such as Delhi to Tokyo Haneda or Bengaluru to Osaka via a hub.
We'd book two or three days before you submit. The hold window is shown before you pay.
Enter the PNR and surname under "Manage booking" and confirm names, flights and dates.
The same dates should appear on the form, itinerary, hotel booking and leave letter.
Say your VFS submission is on 14 November and you plan to fly on 10 December. Book the reservation around 11 or 12 November, check it that evening, and print it with the rest of your file. Japan visa flight questions people ask
Is a confirmed ticket mandatory for a Japan visa from India?
Not on the checklists we read. MOFA and VFS Kolkata ask for an itinerary with flight numbers and arrival and departure dates. Bengaluru asks for a document showing the flight schedule, and one version adds "tickets ... inward and outward". None says the fare must be paid. If your centre's list differs, follow your centre.
Can I show a one-way flight to Japan?
We wouldn't. Every checklist we checked asks for both arrival in and departure from Japan. If you are continuing to another country rather than returning to India, show that onward flight and attach the third country's visa, which Kolkata and Bengaluru both request.
Does it matter which airline my reservation is on?
No official list names airlines. What matters is that the route is realistic, the flight numbers and dates are real, and the booking can be checked with its PNR. A direct Air India or Japan Airlines flight and a one-stop routing via Singapore or Bangkok are equally valid.
How long before my VFS appointment should I book?
Two or three days before submission is our usual advice. A held reservation is temporary, and the hold window is shown before you pay. Booking weeks early means it may have lapsed by the time an officer looks at it.
What if my visa dates differ from my reservation?
Plan the real trip inside the visa's validity, then buy your actual ticket. The single-entry visa is usable for a set period from issue, so check the dates printed on the visa or eVISA notice before you pay for flights.
Will Japanese immigration accept my visa without a return ticket?
Entry is the immigration officer's decision. A Japanese embassy advises visa-exempt visitors to carry a confirmed return or onward ticket, and the same caution makes sense for visa holders. Fly with a real, paid exit ticket rather than the reservation you used for the application.
Do I need a flight reservation for a 5-year multiple-entry visa?
MOFA's outline for Indian multiple-entry categories doesn't list one; it focuses on past Japan visas, travel history and finances. MOFA may still issue a single-entry visa instead, and centres can ask for more, so carrying a travel plan does no harm.
