US B1/B2 Visitor Visa: Do You Need a Flight Ticket or Reservation?

No paid ticket is needed for a US B1/B2 visa. The State Department advises holding off on firm plans and tickets until the visa is in your passport. A flight reservation is optional: it helps you give firm dates on the DS-160 and at the interview, but the officer decides on your ties, purpose and funds, not flights.

Most people who search for a "dummy ticket for a US visa" are worried that the consulate will ask to see flights. It almost never works that way. The US B1/B2 process is built around an online form (the DS-160) and a short interview, and the State Department's own advice is to hold off on buying tickets. This guide sets out what the official pages actually say, what to carry on interview day, and the one situation, travelling on ESTA, where a real paid return ticket is a legal requirement. If you want interview tips rather than paperwork, our separate guide on the US visa interview covers that.

Who needs a B1/B2 visa, and who can use ESTA?

Indian passport holders need a B1/B2 visa for any short business trip, holiday, family visit or medical visit to the United States. India is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so ESTA is not open to you on an Indian passport.[5]

B1 covers business visits. USCIS lists activities such as consulting with business associates, attending a conference on specific dates, and negotiating a contract.[4] B2 covers tourism, visiting relatives and similar purposes. Most applicants receive a combined B1/B2, which is why people use the two labels together.

Citizens of the 42 Visa Waiver countries (the UK, most of the EU, Japan, Australia and others) usually travel on ESTA instead of a visa, for stays of up to 90 days.[5] If that is you, skip to the ESTA section: your ticket rule is stricter, not looser.

One more group to check first: nationals of the 39 countries named in Presidential Proclamation 10998. The US Embassy in India notes that they may still apply and attend interviews but may be ineligible for issuance or admission.[2]

What do official US sources say about flights?

The clearest line is on the State Department's visitor visa page: visas are never assured in advance, so firm plans and ticket purchases should wait for the visa itself.[1] That is the opposite of how many Schengen checklists read, and it is worth taking at face value.

The legal standard for a visitor visa, set out in the federal regulations, says nothing about flights. The officer has to be convinced you will depart when the visit is over and that you have made adequate financial arrangements for the visit and your departure.[3] Notice the word "arrangements". Your money and your plan to go home matter. A booking reference does not prove either on its own.

  • travel.state.gov: final plans and ticket purchases should wait "until you have a visa".[1]
  • 22 CFR 41.31: the applicant intends to leave at the end of the temporary stay, and adequate financial arrangements have been made for the visit and departure.[3]
  • 8 CFR 217.2 (ESTA only): air arrivals under the Visa Waiver Program must have a round trip ticket at the time of arrival.[6]

So for a B1/B2 applicant, a paid ticket is not just unnecessary. Buying a non-refundable fare before your interview is exactly what the State Department advises against.

B1/B2 document checklist: what to bring to the appointment

The core items are fixed. The supporting papers depend on your story, and officers may not look at them at all if your answers are clear.

  • DS-160 confirmation page. If you corrected your DS-160 after booking, the embassy in India asks you to bring both the original confirmation page used to book and the corrected one.[2]
  • Valid passport. Bring old passports with earlier US visas too, if you have them.
  • Appointment confirmation and fee receipt.
  • Proof of funds: bank statements, salary slips or income tax returns, whatever fits your situation.
  • Proof of ties at home: employment letter with approved leave, business registration, property papers, family responsibilities.
  • Purpose papers: a conference registration, a meeting invitation from a US company, or a letter from relatives you will visit.
  • A simple itinerary (optional): dates, cities, and where you will stay. A flight reservation can sit behind this if you want firm dates.
  • Medical devices: if you need one in the consular section, carry an original letter from a medical professional, or you may be turned away and rescheduled.[2]

Our honest view: a tidy one-page itinerary does more for you than a stack of bookings. Officers ask short questions. "How long will you stay?" and "Where will you go?" need instant, consistent answers, and a printout in your folder helps you stay consistent with what you typed on the DS-160.

How to apply from India, step by step

  1. Decide the trip in outline. Rough dates, length of stay, cities, who pays. You do not need tickets.
  2. Fill in the DS-160 online. The US Embassy in India sends visitors straight to this form for short-term visits.[2] Give honest planned dates; if nothing is fixed, use your best estimate.
  3. Pay the $185 fee and book your slots. India uses an online scheduling system; visa enquiries now go to the embassy's support address on the usvisascheduling platform.[2]
  4. Attend the Visa Application Centre (VAC) appointment, or go to a document drop-off location if the system routes your case there.[2]
  5. Attend the interview at the embassy or consulate, unless you were routed to drop-off.
  6. Wait for the passport to come back with the visa (or a refusal letter).
  7. Only then buy your real ticket, for dates that sit inside the visa's validity.

If your trip is urgent, you can request an expedited appointment from the scheduling system, but only once you already hold a confirmed interview date. The embassy warns that expedited slots are very limited.[2]

Avoid this: cancelling your existing appointment while an expedite request is pending. The embassy says to keep it unless you have confirmation that the request was approved.[2]

How much does the B1/B2 visa cost, and how long does it take?

The application fee is $185.[1] In India you pay in rupees at the consular exchange rate, which has been ₹98 to the dollar since 25 May 2026.[2] By our arithmetic that comes to about ₹18,130, but the payment page shows the exact figure. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable, refusal or not.[2]

You may also see reports of an additional "visa integrity fee" created by a 2025 US law. We could not confirm on an official State Department page, in October 2026, whether or how it is being collected, so check the official fee page at the time you apply rather than relying on blog figures.

Waiting times for interview slots vary by city and season, and the embassy does not promise slots before a planned trip.[2] That is the practical reason not to buy flights early: you may not even have an interview before your intended travel date.

When does a flight reservation actually help?

Treat a reservation as a planning aid, not a requirement. It earns its place in three situations.

You want firm dates on the DS-160. Say your nephew graduates in Boston on 22 May and you want to arrive on 18 May and leave on 2 June. A held reservation on those dates lets you fill the travel section with real flight details instead of guesses, and your answer at the window matches the form.

A sponsor or employer wants to see a plan. Some companies want a routing before approving leave or a business trip. A reservation shows the route and dates without spending the fare.

You are combining the US with another visa. If the same trip needs a UK or Schengen visa that does ask for flight details, one consistent reservation keeps every application telling the same story. Our Schengen visa guide explains what those checklists ask for.

Where it does not help: as a substitute for funds or ties. A reservation never answers "why will you come back?" Your job, family and finances do that.

If you do use one, call it a reservation every time; it is not a ticket. Write "planned" or "held booking" in any note you attach. Honesty on the DS-160 matters far more than how your itinerary looks.

Travelling on ESTA? The ticket rule is stricter

This is the part that catches people out. If you are a citizen of a Visa Waiver country and fly in on ESTA, the regulation says that at the time of arrival you must have a round trip ticket that takes you out of the United States.[6] The rule defines that ticket as a return transportation ticket on a participating carrier, an electronic ticket record, or a few listed alternatives such as return vouchers.[6]

There is a further catch. If the onward flight ends in Canada, Mexico or a nearby island, it only counts when you live there.[6] So a one-way flight to New York followed by a held booking to Toronto does not meet it.

A held reservation is not a ticket. If you are travelling on ESTA, buy a real return or onward ticket, refundable if your plans are loose. We will say it plainly: our reservation is the wrong product for an ESTA arrival.

Also note that an approved ESTA does not decide whether you are admitted. CBP officers determine admissibility when you arrive.[5]

What happens at check-in and on arrival with a B1/B2 visa?

At check-in, airline staff confirm there is a valid visa in your passport. We found no published rule requiring B1/B2 visa holders to show a return ticket to board, unlike the ESTA rule above. In practice, almost everyone flying on a visitor visa holds a real return ticket by then anyway, because they bought it after the visa came through.

At the port of entry, a CBP officer decides whether to admit you and for how long. The visa lets you travel to the border and ask for entry; it is not a promise of admission.[5] Carry the same evidence you took to the interview: return ticket, where you are staying, and proof of funds. Answers should match what you told the consulate.

Mistakes that hurt B1/B2 applicants

  • Buying a non-refundable ticket before the interview, then being refused or getting a late slot.
  • Different dates in different places: DS-160 says three weeks, the leave letter says ten days, and the interview answer says "about a month".
  • Calling a reservation a "confirmed ticket" in a letter or at the window.
  • Using a fabricated PDF with an invented booking code. False documents are a far bigger problem than having no flights at all.
  • Bringing bookings but no proof of ties. Officers focus on why you will return.
  • Flying in on ESTA with only a held booking as the return leg.

If you want a reservation for your US file

What you get from us is a held booking on a real airline, issued under your passport name, with a PNR that opens on the carrier's "Manage booking" page. Nobody can fly on it, and no fare has been paid. In a B1/B2 file it is an optional planning paper; for an ESTA arrival it is simply the wrong tool.

Pricing is per traveller and identical for a single leg or a return; a multi-city plan costs one fare for each pair of legs. Expect the PDF roughly ten minutes after paying by UPI, card or netbanking (Razorpay processes payment), and track the order if you like. You see how long the hold lasts before paying, so buy it near the day you need it. US B1/B2 visa and flights: frequently asked questions

Is a flight ticket mandatory for a US B1/B2 visa?

No. No official checklist we found for the B1/B2 visa requires a flight booking, and the State Department advises against buying tickets before the visa is issued. The officer decides on your purpose, your ties at home and your finances. You can bring a reservation or a simple itinerary if it helps you give consistent dates, but it is optional.

What should I put in the DS-160 travel section if I have no flights?

Give your best honest estimate of the arrival date and how long you plan to stay. You do not need a flight number to submit the form. If you later fix the dates, that is normal; just make sure what you say at the interview matches your current plan, and bring the correct confirmation pages if you corrected the form.

Will the visa officer check my PNR?

Consulates do not publish how they check supporting papers, and many interviews never touch the flight question. If you show a reservation, assume someone can open it on the airline site, so it must be real and carry your name. Never present an invented booking code; a false document is far more damaging than having no booking.

How much is the US visitor visa fee in rupees?

The fee is $185. India converts it at the consular exchange rate, which has been ₹98 per dollar since 25 May 2026, so roughly ₹18,130. The scheduling system shows the exact amount when you pay. A refusal does not bring the fee back, so keep the trip dates realistic.

I am British and travelling on ESTA. Can I use a flight reservation?

Not for the return leg. Visa Waiver travellers arriving by air must hold a round trip ticket at arrival, defined as an actual return transportation ticket or electronic ticket record. A held reservation is not that. A return that stops in Canada or Mexico counts only for residents there. Buy a real ticket, refundable if needed.

When should I buy my real flight?

After the visa is in your passport. Check the visa's validity dates and the name spelling, then book. If you held a reservation for your application, you do not have to fly on those exact dates; just plan the real trip honestly and carry evidence of your return plans when you arrive.

Does a reservation improve my chances of approval?

We would not claim that, and no official source does. Approval turns on whether you show you will leave at the end of your stay and can pay for the trip. A reservation simply keeps your dates consistent. Spend your preparation time on clear answers and proof of ties.
