Picture the usual situation. The appointment at the visa centre in Colombo is booked, the checklist mentions flights, and you would rather not pay for a long-haul fare that could be wasted if the answer is no. Good news first: for the visa stage, several official checklists say outright that you should not pay for the ticket yet. The harder part comes later, at check-in in Katunayake or at an arrival counter abroad, where rules can be stricter. This guide walks through both stages using what embassies and immigration departments publish, and it tells you plainly where we could not confirm something.

When does a Sri Lankan traveller need a reservation, and when a real ticket?
Think of your trip in two halves. Before the visa is issued, an officer is judging a plan on paper. A reservation that shows your intended dates, in your name, and that opens on the airline website, fits that job well. After the visa is issued, you are dealing with airlines and border officers, and some of them want a ticket that is actually paid for.
In our experience the cleanest approach is simple. Hold a reservation for the application. Collect your passport with the visa inside. Then buy the fare you will really fly on, ideally on the same dates so nothing in your file contradicts itself.
The exception is a trip where no visa is needed in advance, like a holiday in Malé. There is no visa officer to impress, only the immigration desk on arrival, so the "reservation first" logic does not apply in the same way.
Are there any official checks when you leave Sri Lanka?
For ordinary tourists we found no published rule from Sri Lankan authorities requiring a return ticket at departure. The airline still checks that you meet the entry rules of the country you are flying to, and that is where weak documents get noticed.
Workers are a different case. The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment states that every Sri Lankan who leaves the country for employment must register with the Bureau before leaving, citing section 53(3) of the SLBFE Act No. 21 of 1985. Registration can be done at the head office, at a branch, or online with online fee payment.[1] The Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi adds that an unregistered migrant worker is not entitled to the Bureau's coverage or benefits.[2]
Be straight about purpose. If you are going abroad to work, register with the SLBFE and travel on the correct visa. A tourist visa supported by a flight reservation is for tourism. We will not help anyone present a work trip as a holiday, and nobody should.
Which visas do Sri Lankans apply for, and what do checklists say about flights?
The table below covers destinations that come up often for Sri Lankan passports. We only quote wording we could open on an official page this month.

Germany and the rest of Schengen
The German Embassy in Colombo is unusually direct. Its tourist checklist wants an itinerary listing the flights you arrive and leave on, along with any overland dates for other Schengen countries. It then asks you not to hand in paid flight tickets, since the embassy accepts no liability for your loss after a refusal.[4] That is about as clear an endorsement of a reservation as you will find on an embassy page.
The same checklist asks for travel health insurance covering all Schengen states with at least EUR 30,000 of cover, and it says credit card insurance is not accepted. Without an inviting host, it wants a hotel reservation and proof of sufficient funds.[4] On timing, Germany says you can lodge the application up to 6 months before the trip, and a decision normally takes 15 calendar days, or up to 45 if your case needs a closer look.[3]
Applying to another Schengen state? The EU Visa Code accepts a reservation as proof of intended travel, and the Netherlands tells applicants plainly that a paid ticket is not needed.[5][6] If your trip covers several countries, our guide to multi-country Schengen trips explains which consulate is responsible.
Japan
Japan's embassy in Colombo sends visa applicants to the Japan Visa Application Centre.[13] We tried to open the current short-stay checklist this month and could not, so we will not quote it. Download it yourself from the centre or the embassy before you book anything, and follow its wording on flights exactly. Our Japan visa guide covers the general approach.
UK, US and Canada
These three behave differently. GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide puts flight bookings in its list of weaker evidence for visitors, with transit as the one exception, so we would not pad a UK file with one.[7] For the US, the State Department warns against buying tickets before a visa is approved.[8] A reservation printout can help you answer date questions at the Colombo interview, but it is optional. Canada's IRCC asks visitors for a travel itinerary, and flight details can form part of it.[9]
What about trips where you get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa?
This is where Sri Lankans most often get caught out, because the checks happen at the airport rather than at a visa centre.
- Maldives. Maldives Immigration grants a tourist visa on arrival to all nationalities, but it lists a complete itinerary with confirmed return journey tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and enough money for the stay. Every traveller also submits a Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival.[10] The word "confirmed" matters here. For a short Malé holiday, buy the return ticket.
- Türkiye. Sri Lankans need a visa, but the Turkish foreign ministry allows an online e-Visa for those who already hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen state, the US, the UK or Ireland.[12] Check the conditions on the e-Visa site before you rely on this route.
- Thailand. Sri Lanka is missing from the list of 60 places given 30 visa-free days in Bangkok's revised scheme, which took effect on 15 September 2026.[11] Ask the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo which visa applies to you.

What order should a Sri Lankan applicant do things in?
- Get the checklist for your exact visa type from the embassy or its VFS page. Sri Lankan forums often circulate old versions.
- Decide the dates with your employer's leave letter in front of you, then match insurance and hotels to them.
- Spell names as on the passport, written out in full rather than as initials, on the form and on the booking alike.
- Order the reservation a couple of days ahead of the appointment, not weeks earlier.
- Open the booking on the carrier's own website using its booking code and your surname, then keep a screenshot.
- Describe it accurately as a flight reservation in any cover letter.
- After the visa arrives, buy the ticket you will fly on and keep that confirmation for check-in and arrival.
Here is an example. Say you work at a bank in Kandy, your appointment at VFS Colombo is on 20 November, and you plan to be in Germany from 6 to 19 January. We would order the reservation around 17 November for 6 January out and 19 January back, check it that evening, and leave the actual Colombo to Frankfurt purchase until the passport returns. This is an illustration, not a real customer's file.
What goes wrong most often in Sri Lankan files?
- Initials instead of full names. Sri Lankan names are often shortened in daily life; airline and visa records need the full passport spelling.
- Submitting a paid ticket to Germany despite the embassy asking you not to.[4]
- Booking far too early, so the hold has ended by the time an officer looks.
- Turning up in Malé with only a reservation when the rule says confirmed return tickets.[10]
- Skipping SLBFE registration for a job abroad.[1]
- Buying from a seller whose PDF has no working PNR. If it does not open on the airline website, do not submit it.

How do you order a reservation from Sri Lanka?
Use our booking form. Type the route, for example Colombo to Frankfurt and back, and every passenger's name copied letter for letter from the passport. Outside India the fee is $9 for each passenger, whether one way or return; for multi-city trips, each pair of legs is charged separately. You pay by card through Razorpay, and your bank will show the charge converted to rupees. Does the German Embassy in Colombo want a paid air ticket?
No. The Colombo checklist wants your flights in and out listed on an itinerary and specifically discourages paid tickets, because a refusal would leave you carrying the cost. A reservation in your name that matches your dates suits that request. Final decisions still rest with the embassy.
Is a reservation enough to enter the Maldives on a Sri Lankan passport?
It may not be. Maldives Immigration lists confirmed return journey tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking and sufficient funds for the tourist visa on arrival, plus a Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival. A held reservation may not meet the word "confirmed". For a holiday there, buy the return ticket before you leave Colombo.
Do I need SLBFE registration for a tourist trip?
The SLBFE registration rule applies to Sri Lankans leaving for employment, under section 53(3) of the 1985 Act. A genuine holiday is not employment. If any part of the trip involves taking up work, register with the Bureau and use the correct work visa; do not travel as a tourist instead.
Should I include a flight booking in a UK visit visa application?
We would leave it out. GOV.UK guidance on supporting documents rates flight bookings as poor evidence for a visit, unless you are only transiting. Spend the effort on evidence of your job, savings, family ties and the purpose of the trip instead. Buy the ticket once the visa is granted.
How early should I order the reservation before a VFS appointment?
Two or three days before is our usual advice. Our form tells you the hold period before you pay, and ordering close to the appointment means the PNR is far more likely to still be open when the file is reviewed. When the appointment is rescheduled, book again for the revised dates instead of recycling the earlier PNR.
How much does it cost, and how do I pay from Sri Lanka?
Each passenger costs $9, one way or return, and every extra pair of legs on a multi-city route adds its own charge. Payment is by card through Razorpay, and your bank converts the amount to rupees. Expect the PDF within roughly ten minutes, and you can look up the PNR on the airline's site yourself.
Can I use a Schengen visa to get a Turkish e-Visa?
Türkiye's foreign ministry says a Sri Lankan who already holds a valid Schengen, American, British or Irish visa or residence permit can get an e-Visa on the official website. Without one of those, you apply for a regular visa. Read the e-Visa conditions carefully before you book flights through Istanbul.
