Do I need a flight reservation for my visa? Requirements by country (2026)

A sourced reference table for 25 destinations: which ones ask for a flight itinerary with a tourist visa application, which tell you not to buy tickets before a decision, and which check proof of onward travel at the border. Every row links to an official source. Last checked October 2026.

The short answer

It depends on the destination. Schengen states, Japan, South Korea, China (at most missions), Egypt and South Africa list a flight reservation in their visa checklists. The UK, USA, Australia and Ireland advise against buying tickets before a decision. Many visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries check proof of onward travel at the border or at check-in.

Reservation, not a purchaseWhere an itinerary is asked for, official guidance generally accepts a reservation — Japan's checklist, for example, says tickets need not be paid for at application. A reservation is not a paid ticket and cannot be used to board a flight.

Flight reservation requirements by country

Status refers to an ordinary tourist visit. Requirements differ by nationality, by the consulate you apply to and by visa route, so always open the source link for your own case.

  • Required listed in the official checklist
  • Recommended optional supporting document
  • Not required not asked for, or officials advise not to buy tickets yet
  • Onward proof at entry checked at the border or by the airline
  • Not confirmed no official source found

How to use this table

  1. Find your destination and open the source. The status is a summary for a typical tourist visit. Your nationality, place of residence and the consulate or visa centre you apply through can change what is asked for.
  2. Read "Not required" carefully. It means the visa application does not ask for a flight booking, or officials advise against buying tickets before a decision. Border officers and airlines can still ask how and when you will leave.
  3. Treat "Onward proof at entry" as an airport check. Airlines check entry rules through IATA's Timatic database before boarding, so a missing return or onward booking can stop you at check-in, not only at immigration. The public front end is the IATA Travel Centre.
  4. Keep dates consistent. Flight dates on any itinerary you submit should match your application form, hotel bookings and travel insurance.
  5. Be accurate with officials. Describe what you submit as a flight reservation or itinerary, and answer questions about your plans truthfully.

Key takeaways

  • Checklist-driven visas usually ask for an itinerary. Schengen, Japan, South Korea, China (at most missions), Egypt and South Africa list flight bookings in their document checklists.
  • Several major destinations say don't buy yet. The UK, USA, Australia and Ireland tell applicants not to buy tickets before a decision; the UK goes further and says flight bookings should not be used as evidence.
  • Visa-free often still means "show your exit". Ten of the 25 destinations — including Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka — expect proof of return or onward travel at entry.
  • A reservation is generally enough where an itinerary is asked for. Japan and South Korea explicitly accept a reservation; none of the visa checklists reviewed require a fully paid ticket at application.
  • Online visas ask less. Russia's unified e-visa and Vietnam's e-visa do not ask for flight details at application.

Methodology

Each row was checked in October 2026 against official sources only: government immigration portals, foreign-ministry and embassy or consulate pages, EU legislation (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, the Visa Code) and national tourism authorities where they publish entry conditions. Aggregator blogs and visa agents were not used as sources.

We recorded what each source says about flights for an ordinary tourist visit and sorted it into one of four statuses. Where a source applies only to some nationalities or one mission, the row says so. Where we could not open an official page that answers the question, the row is marked "Not confirmed" rather than guessed. Summaries are paraphrased; follow the link for the exact wording.

We plan to recheck the table periodically. If an official page has changed, email support@dummyticketprice.com with the link and we will review the row.
