A green passport opens fewer doors without a visa than most, so for many Nigerians the flight question comes up at the consulate long before it comes up at the airport. The good news is that the paperwork rules are written down. The German missions in Nigeria publish a sorted checklist, the UK says plainly which documents it doesn't need, and the US has its own short advice on tickets. This guide goes through those official pages one by one, tells you where a held reservation fits, and flags the one big 2026 change every Nigerian applicant for a US visitor visa should know about.
Key facts for Nigerian passport holders
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Does the Schengen checklist from Nigeria mention flights? | Yes. The German missions' tourist list (status June 2026) includes "Flight reservation/booking" as item 9.[3] |
| When can you apply for Schengen? | No earlier than 6 months and normally no later than 15 days before the trip; decisions usually take 15 days, up to 45.[4] |
| Do you need a UK visa? | Yes. Nigeria is on the UK visa national list.[7] |
| US B-1/B-2 visas | The US Mission in Nigeria announced a partial suspension of B-1/B-2, F, M and J visa issuance for Nigerian nationals from 1 January 2026.[1] |
| Canada | Nigerians need a visitor visa.[9] |
| Our price | $9 per passenger, one way or round trip, emailed in about 10 minutes. |
Which visas do Nigerians most often need a flight plan for?
The short list is Schengen, the UK, the US and Canada, with Dubai and Asian destinations close behind. Each of the four big ones treats flights differently, and that difference matters more than any general rule about "dummy tickets".
| Destination | Visa needed? | What the official page says about flights | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany (Schengen) | Yes | "Flight reservation/booking" on the sorted tourist list[3] | Germany |
| Netherlands (Schengen) | Yes | Reservation in your name; a paid ticket is not needed[6] | Netherlands |
| France, Italy, Spain | Yes | The EU Visa Code lists a reservation as acceptable evidence; follow each consulate's list[5] | France |
| United Kingdom | Yes[7] | Flight bookings are among documents GOV.UK says not to send, unless transiting[8] | UK |
| United States | Yes, with a 2026 suspension on visitor visas[1] | Don't buy tickets before you have a visa[2] | US interview |
| Canada | Yes[9] | Itinerary evidence can include flight details[10] | Canada |
| Singapore | Yes[11] | Visitors should hold proof of onward travel[11] | Singapore |
| ECOWAS states | No, up to 90 days[12] | Valid travel document and health certificate under the protocol[12] | n/a |
What do Schengen consulates in Nigeria want to see about flights?
They want a reservation, not a purchase. The clearest example is Germany. Its missions in Nigeria publish a "sorting of application" list for tourists, marked status June 2026, and ask you to arrange your papers in that exact order. Unsorted files are not accepted. Item 9 reads "Flight reservation/booking", sitting between travel health insurance and proof of accommodation, and the list also asks for a travel itinerary.[3]
Notice the slash. "Reservation/booking" leaves room for either, and nothing on that list asks you to pay for a ticket before a decision. That matches the EU-wide rule: Annex II of the Visa Code names a reservation for a return or round trip as possible evidence of your plans.[5] The Netherlands goes further and states that a paid ticket isn't required.[6]
Timing comes from the European Commission. You can lodge an application up to six months before travel and, as a rule, at least 15 days before. A decision normally takes 15 days and can stretch to 45 when a file needs more checks.[4] For Nigerian applicants, appointment slots are usually the real bottleneck, so book the appointment first and the reservation last.
Which consulate? Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If the split is even, it is the country you enter first. Our Schengen visa guide and the page on multi-country trips walk through that choice.
Desk tip: the German list puts the itinerary under "documents pertaining to your desired travel category". Your reservation dates, hotel nights and itinerary should tell the same story to the day. Officers notice when Lagos to Frankfurt lands on the 4th but the hotel starts on the 6th.
Should a Nigerian send a flight booking with a UK visitor visa?
No. This surprises people, but the Home Office is direct about it. Its guide to supporting documents for visitors lists flight bookings among things you don't need to provide, with transit visas as the exception.[8] Nigeria is on the UK's visa national list, so you do need the visa itself.[7]
What decides a UK visit visa is your purpose, your money and your reasons to come home. A tidy bank history and a letter from your employer will do far more than any itinerary. If you want a reservation for your own planning, fine, but we'd keep it out of the upload. For the full picture, read our UK visa guide.
What changed for Nigerian US visa applicants in 2026?
A lot. On 22 December 2025 the US Mission in Nigeria announced that, from 1 January 2026, it was partially suspending visa issuance to Nigerian nationals for B-1/B-2 visitor visas, F, M and J student and exchange visas, and immigrant visas, under Presidential Proclamation 10998.[1]
Some details from that notice are worth reading slowly:
- Visas issued before 1 January 2026 were not revoked under the proclamation.[1]
- People holding a valid visa on the effective date are not subject to it.[1]
- Dual nationals applying on a passport from a country not covered are among the listed exceptions.[1]
- Affected applicants may still apply and book interviews, but may be ineligible for issuance or admission.[1]
So if you're a Nigerian national without a valid US visa, a flight reservation will not change the outcome. Check travel.state.gov for the current status before paying any visa fee. Where an interview does go ahead, the State Department's general advice still applies: don't buy tickets until you have the visa.[2] A reservation can help you answer date questions crisply, nothing more. See our US interview guide.
How does Canada treat flight details for Nigerians?
Canada requires Nigerians to hold a visitor visa.[9] IRCC's supporting-documents page suggests showing your travel plans, and flight details can form part of that itinerary.[10] A reservation is the sensible way to show them, because a refusal on a non-refundable ticket is money gone. Keep the dates realistic for the processing time Canada shows on its own site. More in our Canada visa guide.
Does Nigeria check your return ticket when you leave?
We looked for a Nigeria Immigration Service rule requiring a return ticket to depart and did not find one on an official page in October 2026. So we won't claim one exists. What does happen is an airline check at the counter in Lagos or Abuja. Airlines check passenger documents against IATA's Timatic database, which IATA describes as the source carriers use for travel document requirements.[13]
That means the rules that bite at check-in are the destination's rules, not Nigeria's. If you fly on a Schengen visa, the agent wants the visa. If you fly to a place that demands onward travel, they may ask for it before printing your boarding pass. By then you should be holding the ticket you will actually use.
Where do Nigerians need proof of onward travel?
Mostly in two situations: visa-free entries, and places where the visa itself is conditional on leaving by a set date.
- Within ECOWAS. The free movement protocol lets a Community citizen visit another member state for up to 90 days without a visa, with a valid travel document and international health certificate.[12] Onward-ticket demands are uncommon on these trips, but carriers can still ask.
- Singapore. Nigeria is on ICA's list of passports that need a visa, and ICA tells all short-term visitors to carry sufficient cash and proof of onward travel such as tickets or visas.[11]
- South Africa. DIRCO's exemption list mentions Nigeria only for diplomatic and official passports, so ordinary passport holders apply for a visa.[14] See our South Africa visa guide.
Our general guides cover the rest: proof of onward travel, the onward ticket page and airline check-in versus immigration.
Reservation, refundable fare or full ticket: what fits each stage?
| Stage | Held reservation | Refundable fare | Paid ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen application from Lagos or Abuja | Matches "flight reservation/booking" | Works, but your money is tied up | Risky before a decision |
| UK visitor visa | Not needed as evidence | Not needed | Not needed |
| US visitor visa | Optional; won't affect the 2026 suspension | Not needed | US advises against buying first |
| Canada visitor visa | Good way to show flight details | Works | Risky before a decision |
| Check-in for a visa-free or onward-proof trip | Depends on the destination's wording | Usually fine | Always fine |
If the refundable column tempts you, our comparison of reservations and refundable tickets sets out the cost of each.
How do you prepare the flight part of a Nigerian visa file?
- Get the checklist from the mission itself. For Germany that is the sorted list on nigeria.diplo.de, not a copy shared on WhatsApp.
- Secure the appointment. Slots drive everything else, so plan around the date you get.
- Fix travel dates that fit your leave, your hotel and the consulate's processing time.
- Order the reservation two or three days before the appointment, with names exactly as on the passport data page.
- Open it on the airline's website with the PNR and surname, and save a screenshot.
- Sort your papers in the mission's order. The flight sits where the list puts it.
- After the visa is issued, buy the real ticket and travel on that.
Here is how that looks in practice. Say you work in Victoria Island and your German appointment in Lagos is on 18 November, for a trip from 20 December to 3 January. We'd order the reservation on 15 or 16 November for those exact dates, check it on the airline's site that evening, and leave the ticket purchase until the passport comes back with a visa. That is a worked example, not a client story.
Which mistakes trip up Nigerian applicants?
- Name order switched. Copy surname and given names exactly as printed, including any middle name.
- Sending a flight booking to UKVI and leaving out the bank and employment evidence that actually matters.
- Paying US visa fees without checking the 2026 suspension first.
- Booking the reservation a month early, so the hold has lapsed before the officer looks.
- Using a seller whose PDF has no PNR that opens on the airline site. Edited documents can lead to refusal and a ban, so never use them.
- Unsorted German files. The mission says it won't accept them.[3]
Before you pay anyone, compare them against our provider checklist and learn the lookup from how to verify before submission or our verifiable dummy ticket guide.
How do you order a reservation from Nigeria?
Use our booking page. Enter the route, for example Lagos to Frankfurt and back, and each traveller's name from the passport. The worldwide price is $9 per passenger for one way or return, and multi-city trips are priced per pair of legs. Payment goes through Razorpay; from Nigeria a Visa or Mastercard that allows international online payments is the practical choice. Your bank decides the naira rate and any card charges, so check with them if a payment is declined.
The itinerary PDF, with the airline and PNR, usually lands in about 10 minutes, and order tracking shows where it is. The hold window for your route is shown before you pay, which is why we suggest ordering close to the appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Is a flight reservation enough for a German Schengen visa from Nigeria?
For the flight item, usually yes. The tourist checklist from the German missions in Nigeria lists "Flight reservation/booking" and does not ask for a paid ticket. The rest of the file, especially finances, ties to Nigeria and the itinerary, carries more weight. The consulate makes the decision and can ask for more documents.
Can Nigerians still get US visitor visas in 2026?
The US Mission in Nigeria announced a partial suspension of B-1/B-2 and student visa issuance for Nigerian nationals from 1 January 2026. Existing valid visas were not revoked, and some exceptions apply, such as dual nationals using another passport. Check travel.state.gov for the current position before paying a fee. A reservation does not change eligibility.
Should I upload a flight booking for a UK visa from Lagos?
We wouldn't. GOV.UK's guide to visitor documents lists flight bookings among items you don't need to send, except for transit. Spend the effort on bank statements, employment or business proof and a clear explanation of your trip. Nigeria is a visa national country, so the visa itself is required.
Do I need a return ticket to leave Nigeria?
We found no official Nigeria Immigration Service rule requiring one in October 2026. Airlines, though, check documents against the destination's rules using IATA's Timatic system, so the counter agent may ask for a visa or onward proof. Travel on the real ticket you bought after approval and you will have what they need.
Can I pay for a reservation in naira?
We price worldwide orders at $9 per passenger and take payment through Razorpay. A Nigerian Visa or Mastercard enabled for international online use is the usual route, and your bank converts from naira at its own rate. If a card is declined, ask your bank to allow foreign online payments, then try again.
How early should a Nigerian applicant book the reservation?
Close to the appointment, ideally two or three days before. The hold window for your route is shown before payment, and a reservation booked weeks early may have lapsed by the time an officer checks it. Book after you have the appointment date, so the dates in your file all line up.
Do Nigerians need a visa for Ghana or other ECOWAS countries?
Under the ECOWAS free movement protocol, a Community citizen can visit another member state for up to 90 days without a visa, holding a valid travel document and international health certificate. Member states can still refuse inadmissible travellers, and airlines may ask questions, so carry your return details.
