Flight reservation for visa: what embassies actually ask for
A flight reservation for a visa is a booked but unpaid itinerary showing when you plan to enter and leave. Schengen consulates commonly list it, Canada recommends flight details, while the UK and US do not need one and advise against buying tickets before a decision. It must show your passport name, matching dates and route.

What do embassies mean by a "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary"?
Visa checklists use several phrases for the same thing: flight reservation, flight itinerary, travel itinerary, return ticket reservation. In each case the consulate wants to see your planned journey — when you arrive, when you leave and by which route — so it can judge whether the trip is realistic and whether you intend to leave before the visa expires.
The EU Visa Code makes the distinction explicit. Annex II, the list of supporting documents a Schengen consulate may request, includes a "reservation of or return or round ticket" as evidence of the applicant's intention to leave [1]. In other words, a reservation is recognised in its own right; a paid ticket is not the only option.
What a reservation isA real booking created in the airline's reservation system and held without payment. The airline sets how long the hold lasts; the hold window is shown to you before payment.
Which visa applications ask for a flight reservation?
It depends on the country. Here is what the official sources say for the four applications we are asked about most.
| Application | Official position | Our reading |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen (29 countries) | Visa Code Annex II lists a reservation of a return or round ticket [1]. The German missions in India put "Flight reservation" on the tourist checklist and note that a booked ticket does not speed up processing [2]. | Usually on the checklist — a reservation is enough |
| Canada (visitor visa) | IRCC suggests including copies of flight details, proof of accommodation or event registration to show how long you will stay [3]. | Recommended, not mandatory |
| United Kingdom (Standard Visitor) | The Home Office guide lists "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among documents you should not use as evidence [4]. | Not required — only for transit |
| United States (B1/B2) | The State Department says: do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa [5]. | Not required — don't buy a ticket |

What must a flight reservation for a visa show?
- Names exactly as in the passport — same spelling and order, including middle names. A single wrong letter is the most common reason to redo a booking.
- Dates that match the application — the entry and exit dates on your form, hotel bookings and travel insurance should all agree with the flights.
- The route you describe — for Schengen, fly into the country of main destination (or first entry, if no main destination) and out of the area on the dates you state.
- Flight numbers, times and airline — an airline-format itinerary shows these with the PNR.
- Every traveller — each applicant needs to appear, whether on one booking or separate ones.
Is a reservation the same as a purchased ticket?
No, and you should never describe it as one. The difference matters:
| Held reservation | Purchased ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Booking reference (PNR) | Yes | Yes |
| E-ticket number | No | Yes |
| Can be used to fly | No | Yes |
| Cost if the visa is refused | ₹699 / $9 per passenger | Full fare, less any refund |
| How long it lasts | Airline-controlled hold, shown before payment | Until travel |
Where a checklist asks for a reservation, a held booking meets it. If a consulate or VFS/BLS centre asks specifically for a paid ticket, follow that instruction. Use honest wording in your cover letter: "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary".
How might a visa officer check my flight reservation?
Officers can enter the PNR and your surname on the airline's "Manage booking" page to see whether the booking exists. A reservation that has lapsed, or a PDF with no booking behind it, will not appear. Because the hold expires at a time the airline sets, book close to your appointment rather than weeks ahead.
Check it yourself first: open the airline's site, enter the PNR and surname, and confirm the names and dates. Full walkthrough: how to verify a reservation before submission.
Never use an edited or generated PDFA document with no real booking behind it can be treated as a false document, with consequences far worse than a refusal. Only submit a reservation you have checked on the airline's site.
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Booking too early. The hold may lapse before the officer looks. Book a day or two before your appointment.
- Dates that don't match. Arrival on the 10th with a hotel from the 11th invites questions.
- Name typos. Copy the passport's machine-readable line, not memory.
- Buying a non-refundable fare before a decision when the official guidance (UK, US) says you don't need one.
- Calling it a ticket. Describe it accurately. Do not hide or misstate anything to an official.
- Ignoring the local checklist. Consulates and their visa centres can add requirements; their checklist wins.
