Dummy Ticket for Indonesian Travellers: Schengen Files, Japan Waiver and Exit Checks

Indonesian applicants can usually meet the flight item on a Schengen checklist with a reservation in their name; the German Embassy in Jakarta simply lists "flight reservation", and the Dutch checklist confirms you need not pay for one. Visa-free trips to Thailand or Singapore are different: you show onward travel on arrival, so a ticket you will really use is the safer choice.

An Indonesian passport opens a fair number of doors in Asia without any visa at all, and it needs a full application for Europe, North America and a few others. That split decides how you should handle flights. For a Schengen or Canadian application, the officer is reviewing a plan, and a held reservation is often exactly what the checklist asks for. For a weekend in Bangkok or Singapore, nobody reviews your plan in advance; the questions come at check-in and at the arrival desk. Below we go destination by destination, quoting official pages where we could open them, and we also explain the exit interviews Imigrasi runs at Indonesian airports and seaports.

Do Indonesians need a reservation, a paid ticket, or neither?

It depends on whether a visa officer sees your file before you travel. When one does, as with Schengen, a reservation answers the flight question without putting several million rupiah at risk. When nobody does, as on visa-free trips around ASEAN, your proof is checked at the airport, and a ticket you have actually bought tends to cause the fewest questions.

There is also a middle case: trips where you do not need a visa but the airline or the arrival officer wants to see that you will leave. Thailand, Singapore and Japan all sit in this group in different ways, which we cover further down.

Our rule of thumb for Indonesian travellers is short. Reservation for applications, real ticket for travel days.

What does Imigrasi check when Indonesians leave the country?

For most holidaymakers the exit counter takes a minute, but it is not a formality for everyone. Immigration offices regularly report postponing the departure of people they believe are leaving to work abroad without going through the official migrant-worker process. In April 2026, for example, Imigrasi Batam reported postponing departures after document checks and interviews at its checkpoints, explaining the action as protection against exploitation.[1] Earlier, Imigrasi Yogyakarta described similar postponements and cited Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 44 of 2015 on entry and exit checks as the basis.[2]

What this means for an ordinary holidaymaker is fairly simple. Officers may ask where you are going, how long you will stay and who is paying. Clear, consistent answers backed by a hotel booking and a real return ticket make the conversation short.

Our honest advice: if you are going abroad to work, use the official migrant-worker route and the correct visa. Do not travel as a tourist with a reservation and hope for the best. A reservation is a tool for visa applications, not a way around an exit interview.

Germany: what the Jakarta checklist actually asks for

The German Embassy's tourism checklist, dated November 2024, groups hotel and flight details under one heading, "Travel Itinerary". It asks for a valid accommodation booking with a full address and booking reference, and then simply for a flight reservation.[3] It does not ask for a paid ticket. Separately, it wants a cover letter describing the purpose of travel and any trains, buses or internal flights you plan within Schengen.

Some items are specific to Indonesia. The checklist asks for an up-to-date kartu keluarga no older than 6 months, and for personal bank statements covering the last 3 months stamped by the bank, noting that passbook copies are not accepted for sponsored or employed applicants.[3] The embassy page puts processing at 15 days for files lodged in Jakarta and 21 days for Bali and Surabaya, occasionally up to 45, and asks you not to apply more than 180 days before the trip.[4]

Netherlands and the other Schengen states

Dutch guidance wants a booking in your own name for the journey in and the journey out, or some other paper that shows the plan, and it states clearly that buying the fare is unnecessary.[6] For other states, the EU Visa Code is the common baseline: it treats a reservation as acceptable proof of intended travel, while the Commission opens the application window six months out and closes it 15 days before you fly.[5]

Japan: the e-passport waiver

If you hold an Indonesian ICAO-compliant e-passport, Japan's foreign ministry says you can enter without a visa once that passport is registered with a Japanese diplomatic mission in Indonesia. The stay granted on landing is 15 days, and registration can now be done online through JAVES. Without such an e-passport, you need a visa in advance.[7] Because the waiver is not a document-heavy application, flight reservations rarely come into it. If you need a full visa instead, follow the checklist from the Japan Visa Application Centre and see our Japan onward ticket guide.

United States and Canada

Washington's advice is to hold off on any ticket purchase while the visa is pending, so a reservation for a US interview is only a convenience for answering date questions.[12] IRCC's guidance for Canadian visitor visas mentions a travel itinerary that may include flight details.[13] A reservation fits that well.

What do visa-free destinations expect from Indonesians on arrival?

Several popular trips need no visa, which shifts the attention to what you can show at the airport.

  • Thailand. Indonesia appears among the 60 countries and territories granted 30 visa-free days in the MFA chart for the revised rules starting 15 September 2026.[8] Visitors using it must show where they are staying and a departure booked inside those 30 days. Officers can ask to see THB 20,000 per person, and the TDAC has to be filed no earlier than 3 days before landing.[9]
  • Singapore. ICA tells arriving visitors to have adequate funds and evidence that they will travel on, and to file the SG Arrival Card in the three days before landing.[10]
  • Türkiye. Indonesian ordinary passports are exempt from a visa for up to 30 days per entry, within 90 days in any 180.[11]

For a simple return trip, a ticket you have bought settles all of this at once. A reservation earns its place when your onward plan is genuinely open, for example Bangkok first and then perhaps Kuala Lumpur or Hanoi, and you need something to show at check-in. How do you put the flight section of an Indonesian application together?

  1. Download the checklist linked from your VFS or embassy appointment page and keep the version date.
  2. Agree your dates with your employer's leave letter, since the German list wants approved leave spelled out.
  3. Use the passport spelling. Many Indonesians have a single name; enter it exactly as the passport shows, and follow the airline's guidance for one-name passengers.
  4. Order the reservation two to three days before your appointment date.
  5. Check it on the airline website with the booking code and surname, and print the confirmation page.
  6. Call it a reservation in your cover letter, not a ticket.
  7. Once the visa is issued, buy your real fare, then carry it with your hotel booking through the Imigrasi counter.

A worked example: say you are a lecturer in Bandung with a VFS Jakarta appointment on 12 November and a conference trip to Berlin from 2 to 12 December. We would book the reservation on 9 or 10 November with matching dates, look it up on the carrier's site that afternoon, and hold off buying a Jakarta to Berlin fare until the visa is in the passport. It is an illustration, not a customer story.

Which mistakes trip up Indonesian applicants?

  • Single-name passports entered inconsistently. If your passport shows one name, the reservation, form and insurance must all show it the same way.
  • Old kartu keluarga. The German list wants one no older than 6 months.[3]
  • Passbook copies in place of stamped statements.[3]
  • Buying a non-refundable fare to Europe before the decision.
  • Flying to Bangkok with no onward plan when the exemption expects one within 30 days.[9]
  • Using a PDF from a reseller whose code does not open on the airline site.

How do you get a reservation from Indonesia?

Book on our booking page. Enter the route, for instance Jakarta to Amsterdam and back, and the names as they appear in the passport. Our international rate is $9 a traveller whichever way you fly, single or return, and multi-city itineraries are priced by each pair of legs. Payment is by card through Razorpay, and your card issuer converts the charge to rupiah. The form shows the hold period for your route before you pay, and the itinerary with its airline PNR normally arrives within about ten minutes. Progress is visible on our tracking page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the German Embassy in Jakarta accept a flight reservation?

Its tourism checklist, dated November 2024, lists "Flight reservation" under the travel itinerary heading and does not ask for a paid ticket. A reservation in your name, matching the dates in your cover letter and hotel booking, fits that item. The embassy still decides each application on its merits, and incomplete files can be refused.

Do I need a flight booking for Japan with an Indonesian e-passport?

Not for the waiver registration itself. Japan's foreign ministry says Indonesian holders of ICAO-compliant e-passports who register with a Japanese mission in Indonesia can stay up to 15 days without a visa, and registration is available online through JAVES. If you need a longer stay or lack an e-passport, you apply for a visa instead.

Can a reservation serve as onward proof for Thailand?

Under the Thai exemption you need a departure booked within your 30 days, an address for your stay, and a TDAC submitted in the 3 days before you land. A reservation can show an onward plan, but airlines and officers decide what they accept. For a simple Jakarta to Bangkok return, buying the return ticket is the simpler choice.

Why might Imigrasi stop me at departure?

Immigration offices report postponing departures when interviews and document checks suggest someone is leaving to work abroad outside the official migrant-worker process. Genuine tourists are rarely held up if their answers are consistent and they carry a hotel booking and a real return ticket. Travel on the visa that matches your actual purpose.

How long before my VFS appointment should I order?

We suggest two or three days before. Our form shows the hold period for the route before payment, and a recent booking is far more likely to still be live when the officer opens your file. If the appointment is moved, order again for the new dates.

What does it cost from Indonesia, and how do I pay?

Internationally it is $9 a traveller, single or return; a multi-city plan costs that much for each pair of legs. Pay by credit or debit card through Razorpay; your bank shows the amount in rupiah. The PDF with the airline PNR usually arrives about ten minutes after payment.

Is a reservation useful for a US visa interview in Jakarta?

Only as a convenience. The State Department advises against buying tickets before a visa is issued, and consular officers focus on your purpose, finances and ties to Indonesia. A printed reservation can help you give exact dates, but it is not a required document and will not change the outcome.
