For Vietnamese passport holders, the flight question comes up at two moments. The first is the visa file for Europe, Japan, Korea, the UK, the US or Australia, where a consulate wants to see a believable travel plan. The second is check-in at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat for a visa-free trip around Southeast Asia, where the airline may ask how you will leave the next country. This guide covers both, starting with what Vietnamese law asks of you when you leave, then the exact flight wording on official checklists, and finally how we would time a reservation so it is still live when someone checks it.
Key facts for Vietnamese travellers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Does Viet Nam check a return ticket on exit? | Not as a rule we could find. Since August 2023 a passport no longer needs six months' validity just to leave.[1] |
| What does Germany ask for? | "Flugreservierung": a flight reservation, with no need to book the flight firmly.[2] |
| Where do you hand in a German application? | At VFS Global; the embassy in Hanoi and the consulate in Ho Chi Minh City decide.[2] |
| Schengen timing | Apply 6 months to 15 days ahead; decisions usually in 15 days, at most 45.[3] |
| Thailand without a visa | A bilateral agreement covers Vietnamese ordinary passports for 30 days.[9] |
| Singapore without a visa | Viet Nam is not on ICA's visa-required list; onward travel proof is expected.[11][12] |
What does Viet Nam check when you leave?
Your passport, and whether you can enter where you are going. Vietnamese exit control is not interested in your return flight. The question at the border is whether you hold valid travel documents and whether anything bars you from leaving.
One rule changed recently and still confuses people. Before the 2023 amendment to the exit and entry law, a passport needed at least six months of remaining validity for its holder to leave the country. The amendment, in force from 15 August 2023, removed that condition.[1] That does not help much in practice, though, because many destination countries still want months of validity. Take Germany: its Hanoi checklist wants three months of validity left after your Schengen exit date.[2] Renew early if you are close.
The check that does involve flights happens at the airline counter. Carriers must make sure you meet the entry rules of your destination, so a visa-free passenger to Bangkok or Singapore may be asked how and when they will move on.
Which visas do Vietnamese citizens apply for, and what do the checklists say?
Here is what we found on official pages in October 2026. Where we couldn't open or confirm the current list, the table says so.
| Where to | Where the file goes | Flight line on the official list | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany (Schengen) | VFS Global; Hanoi or HCMC mission decides[2] | Flight reservation; firm booking not required[2] | Germany |
| Netherlands (Schengen) | Dutch visa provider | Booked legs in and out of Schengen; payment for them not needed[4] | Netherlands |
| Japan | Rules for Vietnamese nationals sit on a separate MOFA page[5] | An itinerary form is published by the embassy; full current list not opened this month[6] | Japan |
| South Korea | Embassy, consulate or visa centre | No official list we could open for Vietnamese applicants | South Korea |
| United States | DS-160 and interview | Hold off on flights until you have the visa[7] | US |
| United Kingdom | Online, then biometrics | Flight bookings are not useful evidence (transit aside)[8] | UK |
| Australia | Online visitor visa | No flight wording verified for this guide | Australia |
Germany: the clearest wording you will find
The German embassy's tourism checklist for Viet Nam lists "Flugreservierung" and adds, in brackets, that it is not necessary to book the flight firmly.[2] That is about as direct as consular language gets. A reservation in your name, showing the flight into the Schengen area and the flight out, matches the item.
The same checklist asks for a hotel booking or reservation, or details of private accommodation, a detailed travel plan and travel health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover. Processing usually takes about 15 calendar days, and the page says expedited processing is not available.[2] If Germany or Portugal is your main destination, the German missions handle it.
The Netherlands and other Schengen states
For the Netherlands, a held return booking under your own name answers the flight line, and the Dutch list spells out that payment can wait.[4] For France, Italy, Spain and others, check the mission's own list. Under EU rules the earliest you can lodge is six months before departure, and the latest sensible point is 15 days before.[3]
Japan and Korea
Japan's foreign ministry keeps a separate page for Vietnamese nationals seeking a short-term stay, and the embassy in Hanoi publishes an "Itinerary in Japan" form for applicants.[5][6] We could not open the full current document list on an official site in October 2026, so we won't quote a flight requirement for Japan. Ask the receiving agency or centre for its current list. For South Korea, we could not confirm the current list on an official page either. If you do add flight details to either file, keep them consistent with the itinerary form.
US and UK
American guidance tells visa applicants to keep their money until the visa has been granted.[7] The interview is about your purpose and ties to Viet Nam, and a reservation printout is optional. British guidance counts flight bookings as unhelpful for visitor files, and only transit applicants are the exception.[8] We'd leave them out of a UK file.
Visa-free trips in Asia: will the airline ask for an onward flight?
It can. Vietnamese passports are visa-free in several nearby countries, and that is exactly where onward proof comes up, because no visa officer has looked at your plans in advance.
- Thailand. Thailand's 2026 summary places Viet Nam among countries whose ordinary passports enjoy 30 days under a bilateral exemption deal.[9] Thai guidance for exempt visitors mentions leaving within 30 days, a place to stay, THB 20,000 in funds and a TDAC filed up to three days ahead. Because that page doesn't separate out bilateral-deal passports, we'd still pack evidence of your next flight.[10]
- Singapore. Viet Nam does not appear on ICA's list of nationalities that need a visa.[11] Singapore's border agency expects a visitor to be able to show the next step of the journey, and the SG Arrival Card must be filed in the 72 hours or so before landing.[12]
Our advice for these trips is simple. If you are going to Bangkok for a week and coming home, buy the return. If you are flying one way to Singapore and then overland or onwards somewhere undecided, a reservation for the onward leg is a sensible way to show the plan. Reservation, refundable fare or paid ticket?
| Use | Held reservation | Refundable fare | Paid ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| German Schengen visa | Matches the checklist wording | Works, money tied up | Not required |
| Dutch Schengen visa | Explicitly enough | Not needed | Not needed |
| US interview | Nice to have | Unnecessary | Wait until the visa is issued |
| UK visitor visa | Leave out of the file | Unnecessary | Only after approval |
| Visa-free Thailand or Singapore | Usually shows onward travel | Works | Works |
Where a list insists on a ticket that has been paid for, a hold might not meet it; in that case do what the list says. Our comparison of reservations and refundable tickets goes deeper.
What are the steps for a Vietnamese applicant?
- Find the right mission and centre. For Germany, that is VFS Global, with Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City deciding.
- Print the current checklist and put documents in the order it gives.
- Settle your dates. Leave approval, hotel, insurance and travel plan should all show the same days.
- Book roughly three days ahead of the appointment. Holds last two weeks at the very most, and the carrier picks the real length.
- Check the name order. Enter surname and given names exactly as the passport's data page shows them.
- Look the PNR up yourself on the carrier's website, then save an image of the result.
- After the visa is issued, buy the ticket you will actually fly on.
A word on names, because it trips up Vietnamese applicants more than anyone. Your passport lists the family name, say NGUYEN, in the surname field, and everything else, say THI MAI ANH, as given names. Airlines want the same split. If you put MAI ANH as the surname, the lookup will fail and the reservation will not match your passport. Diacritics disappear in airline systems, so Nguyễn becomes NGUYEN, which is normal.
Here's an example of timing. Suppose VFS in Ho Chi Minh City gives you Tuesday 17 November, and you plan to fly out on 21 December and back on 4 January. We'd book on Friday 13 or Saturday 14 November, check the PNR on the airline site that night, and buy the real tickets only after the visa comes back. That is an illustration, not a customer story.
Which mistakes should you avoid?
- Surname and given names swapped, so the airline lookup fails.
- Booking the day you start collecting documents, weeks before the appointment.
- Passport too close to expiry for the destination, even though Viet Nam would let you leave.
- Dates that disagree between flight, hotel and leave letter.
- Using a "ticket" from a social media seller that cannot be found on the airline's website.
- Flying one way to a visa-free country without any onward plan to show the airline.
Our provider checklist and guide to verifying before submission show what to look for.
What if your appointment or travel dates move?
Book again rather than stretching the old one. Appointment centres reschedule, employers change leave dates, and a reservation made for the first plan will not match the second. A hold survives a fortnight at most, at the carrier's discretion, so an appointment pushed back by two weeks normally calls for a new booking on the new dates. It costs the same $9 per passenger, and it keeps every document in the file telling one story.
Families applying together should keep everyone on one booking where possible, with each child's name typed exactly as in their own passport. If parents and children hold appointments on different days, it is fine to submit the same reservation for all of them, as long as it is still live on the later date. When in doubt, check the PNR on the airline's website the evening before each appointment.
And if the visa is refused, don't panic about the reservation. It simply lapses when the hold ends. There is nothing to cancel and no fare to recover, which is the main reason people use a reservation at this stage rather than a ticket.
How do you order a reservation from Viet Nam?
Fill in our booking form with the route, for instance Hanoi to Frankfurt and back, and each traveller's name split exactly as in the passport. From Viet Nam the charge is $9 a person, identical for single and return journeys, with every two legs of a multi-city route counted as one. You pay by card through Razorpay; a Visa or Mastercard enabled for online international payments works best. Within about ten minutes a PDF showing the carrier and PNR lands in your inbox; check the status page if you want to watch it.

Frequently asked questions
Does the German embassy in Hanoi accept a flight reservation?
Yes, on the wording of its tourist checklist, which lists a flight reservation and adds that a firm booking isn't needed. A hold under your name showing the legs into and out of Schengen fits that line. The embassy decides on the whole application, so make sure the booking opens on the airline site and the dates agree with your hotel and insurance.
Do I need six months on my passport to leave Viet Nam?
Not to leave. The 2023 amendment to the exit and entry law, in force from 15 August 2023, removed the six-month remaining-validity condition for exit. Your destination may still require it, though. Germany wants three months beyond your departure from Schengen, and airlines check the rules of the country you are flying to.
How should I write my name on the reservation?
Exactly as the passport data page splits it: family name in the surname field, all other names as given names. Leave out diacritics, since airline systems use plain letters. A swapped surname is the most common reason a Vietnamese traveller cannot open their booking on the airline's website.
Can I fly one way to Thailand from Viet Nam?
Vietnamese passports get 30 days in Thailand under a bilateral agreement. Thai guidance on exemption schemes mentions onward travel within 30 days, and airlines may ask at check-in. Heading somewhere other than home after Bangkok? Keep the next booking on your phone for the counter.
Should I bring flights to the US consulate in Ho Chi Minh City?
Only if you like. American guidance discourages paying for flights before approval, and officers concentrate on why you're going and what brings you back. A printed reservation can help you give clear dates, but it will not decide the outcome either way.
What does a reservation cost from Viet Nam?
Nine US dollars per traveller covers a single or return route, and multi-city plans cost that amount for every two legs. Cards are charged via Razorpay, your document comes through in roughly ten minutes, and before checkout the order form tells you how long the hold for that route should last.
