Dummy Ticket for Germany Visa (2026): What German Missions in India and the Gulf Ask For

Germany's checklists for applicants in India list a "Flight reservation", and they add that a ticket bought in advance earns no faster handling. So a round-trip booking in your name, on the dates in your VIDEX form, is the normal choice. Missions elsewhere word it differently; Pakistan, for one, wants confirmed tickets.

This guide is about Germany only. Anything every Schengen country shares (the €90 fee, the 90/180-day rule, the EU-level wording on reservations, picking your main destination) is explained once in our Schengen flight reservation guide. Here we stick to what German missions themselves publish: the India checklist line by line, the trip from VFS to Mumbai, the working-day clock, and the Gulf missions' own rules.

First, terms. By dummy ticket we mean a seat on a real flight, held for you and identified by a booking code (PNR). Nothing has been paid, so it can't be flown on. For a German visa it simply backs up the travel dates and route you describe.

Germany visa key facts for 2026

QuestionWhat German missions publish
Flight item, India checklists"Flight reservation", alongside a covering letter showing how you'll travel and your itinerary.[3][4]
Does buying early help? No. The checklists say a booked ticket gets no preferred processing.[3][4]
Where to hand in, IndiaAny VFS centre in the country; the file then travels to the Consulate General in Mumbai, which decides.[5]
Latest date to apply15 working days before travel on the June 2025 checklist; the FAQ says 15 calendar days. Use the stricter one.[4][6]
Decision time, IndiaFifteen working days, counted once the file reaches the visa section, plus transit from VFS.[4][5]
PassportUnder 10 years old, three months' validity after your return, two blank pages.[4]
Insurance€30,000 minimum for the whole Schengen trip; Indian policies only from insurers the missions approve.[4]
Stay over 90 days?That needs a national (D) visa, €75 for adults.[7]

Does each German mission word the flight requirement the same way?

No, and that surprises people. Germany has no national checklist; each embassy or consulate writes its own, so the flight line changes with the country you apply from. Here is what we found in October 2026:

MissionFlight wording (short quote or summary)Does a held reservation fit?
India"Flight reservation"; a bought ticket brings no faster processing[3][4]Yes, this is exactly what's asked
UAE"flight reservation"; warns that fake bookings lead to refusal[11]Yes, if genuine and in your name
Saudi ArabiaCopy of a return airline booking listing the passengers and the whole route[9]Yes, round trip
Kuwait"valid, non-canceled flight reservation (round-trip)"[14]Yes, if still live on submission day
Pakistan"confirmed round trip tickets"[12]Possibly not; ask the mission or buy a refundable fare
TanzaniaItinerary only, "NO flight booking"[13]Not needed at all
Last checked: October 2026 on each mission's own page.

Our view: follow the words of the mission you're applying to, not a friend's checklist from another country. Where it says reservation, a verifiable held booking is the honest, cheap answer. Where it says confirmed tickets, a held booking may not satisfy it. And where it wants only an itinerary, don't book anything.

In the covering letter, call the document a flight reservation. It shows a plan; presenting it as a purchased ticket would be misleading.

What is on the German checklist for Indian applicants?

The German missions in India publish a checklist per purpose. We read the Visit / Family & Friends version (June 2025) in full, and the tourism version carries the same flight line.[3][4] In our own words, it asks for:

  • The VIDEX application, filled in online and printed in full, barcode pages included, and signed.
  • Two signed declarations: one on true and complete information, one on travelling with valid medical insurance.
  • Passport and copies: the biometric page, the address page and, for Indian passports, the last page.
  • One biometric photo, 35 x 45 mm, white background, no older than six months.
  • A personal covering letter that sets out how you'll travel and your itinerary.
  • Accommodation proof: hotel or holiday-let bookings, or your host's papers; if you visit several Schengen states, proof for each.
  • Invitation and relationship papers if you're visiting family or friends.
  • Your finances. Salaried: three months of payslips, employment contract, leave sanction letter, three months of bank-stamped statements and ITR acknowledgements for two assessment years (or Form 16). Self-employed: company registration with GST number instead of payslips. Retired: pension statements. Students: enrolment proof and a no-objection certificate.
  • Civil status documents such as a marriage certificate, where relevant.
  • Flight reservation.
  • Travel medical insurance for all Schengen states and the whole trip, at least €30,000.

Three smaller rules on the same checklist catch people out. Passbook copies are not accepted in place of bank statements. Papers not in German or English need a proper translation, or they're treated as missing. And the mission doesn't have to ask for a missing paper before refusing.[4] On the plus side, VFS may not turn away extra papers you want to add.[4]

The covering letter and the flight reservation should tell one story. If the letter says "Frankfurt for four days, then Munich for five", the booking should land in Frankfurt and leave from Munich, or the letter should explain the train back. Our guide to writing the cover letter around your itinerary has worked examples.

How does a Germany Schengen application move through VFS?

The path is simple once you know it. You complete VIDEX, book a VFS slot (the service charge is paid at booking), and hand in the file at the centre that suits you. For Schengen visas any VFS centre in India will do, because every file is sent on to the Consulate General in Mumbai for the decision.[5] VFS has no say in the outcome, and the checklist makes you sign that you understand this.[4]

Points from the missions' own pages that shape your timing:

  • Transit to Mumbai. The checklist allows up to two working days; the visa-centre page says it might take up to six, depending on couriers and holidays. Plan with six.[4][5]
  • Urgent slots. The FAQ describes two urgent categories, for short-notice business and for trade-fair exhibitors, both for travel within four weeks of the appointment.[6]
  • Your passport stays with them. It comes back only through VFS, so don't plan another trip in between.[6]
  • Status questions. Individual queries aren't answered within the standard 15 working days.[4]

The missions also say plainly, on their national-visa page, that you don't need an agent and that forms and information cost nothing.[7] For VFS addresses, airports and local payment, see our city pages for Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Which German mission covers which Indian states?

For a Schengen visa this table doesn't change where you submit, since Mumbai decides every file.[5] It does matter for national (D) visas, which go to the mission for your state.[7]

Schengen (C) visa or national (D) visa?

If the trip is 90 days or less, for tourism, family or business, you want the Schengen (C) visa, and everything on this page about flights applies to it. Staying longer, say for a degree, a job or to join a spouse, means a national (D) visa.[7] Most D categories in India are now applied for on the Consular Services Portal, with VFS appointments for the rest. The fee is €75 (₹8,300) for adults and half that for under-18s, and it isn't refunded on refusal.[7]

The national-visa page we read doesn't mention flights. Each D category has its own checklist, so go by that one; don't carry the Schengen flight line across. Students can read our guide for Indian students.

What should a Germany flight reservation show?

  • Every traveller by passport name. Riyadh's list specifically asks for passenger details on the reservation.[9]
  • Arrival and departure dates identical to VIDEX.
  • A round trip from your home city, the phrase Riyadh, Kuwait and Islamabad all use.[9][12][14]
  • No more than 90 days in the Schengen area.[9]
  • Dates covered by your insurance, which must run for the entire trip as applied for.[4]
  • The airline and PNR, so it can be found.

Germany also has to be the main destination, meaning most days or the main purpose; if days are equal, you apply where you first enter.[6] Splitting time with France? Count the nights, then read our which-country itinerary guide, and the France visa guide if France comes out ahead. For a route through several states, see hotel bookings for multi-city trips; an unfixed night can be covered by a hotel booking for visa.

Do German missions check the booking?

They don't publish their method. Several of them do warn, in strong terms, about fake bookings. Riyadh says hotel bookings may be verified and that cancelled or fake ones lead to rejection.[9] The UAE missions say falsified documents, fake bookings included, bring refusal and possibly further consequences.[11] Kuwait adds a possible Schengen entry ban.[14] EU law, for its part, names false documents among the grounds for refusing any Schengen visa.[2]

So the booking must be real and in your name, and you should open it yourself before submitting: enter the booking code plus surname on the airline's Manage booking screen. Our step-by-step verification guide covers it, and how officers look at reservations explains the consulate's side.

When should I book the reservation for a Germany appointment?

Two or three days before your VFS slot. Reservations remain usable up to 2 weeks; the airline decides the exact period. Kuwait's mission spells out the reason this matters: it wants a non-cancelled booking on the day you apply.[14]

Then work the calendar backwards from your flight. An example: you hand in at VFS Bengaluru on Monday 2 November. Allow six working days for the file to reach Mumbai, which takes you to Tuesday 10 November. Fifteen working days from there (ignoring any mission holidays) lands on Tuesday 1 December, before the passport comes back through VFS. A 28 November departure would be wishful; we'd plan to fly mid-December or later.[4][5]

The hold may well expire while the file is in Mumbai. That's normal: its work is done on submission day. Once the visa arrives, check that your real ticket's dates fall inside the sticker's validity and its permitted number of days, as the FAQ advises.[6]

Applying for a Germany visa from the Gulf

Gulf residents apply where they live, and each German mission there sets its own residence-permit and bank-statement rules. This is what we found on the missions' pages:

CountryWhere to applyResidence permitFlight and bank items
UAEVFS; files go to the German consulate within one working day[11]Valid three months past the visa's expiry or the trip's end[11]Flight reservation; last three months of statements[11]
Saudi ArabiaTLScontact in Riyadh, Al-Khobar or Jeddah, since October 2022[10]Iqama valid three months after your return[9]Round-trip reservation; six months of statements; employer letter attested by the Chamber of Commerce[9]
KuwaitVFS; fee paid there in KWD[14]Civil ID valid three months after you return[14]Live round-trip reservation; six months of salary-account statements; employer letter under two weeks old[14]
QatarVFS Global[15]Valid three months beyond your exit from the Schengen area[15]We couldn't confirm the flight wording
OmanWe did not check the German mission in Muscat for this update. Read its checklist directly.
Last checked: October 2026.

Timing differs too. The UAE page accepts files up to 180 days before travel and quotes up to 15 days to process;[11] Riyadh's checklist says no later than 15 calendar days before you fly.[9]

Two practical points. Your booking should start and end in the Gulf city you live in, not in India. And check the permit date against your return flight before you book: if your Iqama expires in five months and you return in six weeks, Riyadh's three-month rule is met; with a ten-week trip it wouldn't be. Indians in the region may find our Gulf expat guide useful.

Mistakes we see in Germany files

  • Buying a non-refundable fare to look keen. In India it changes nothing about speed.[4]
  • Copying another country's checklist. Islamabad, Riyadh and Dar es Salaam each want something different.
  • VIDEX and booking dates that disagree, or insurance that stops a day early.
  • Applying to Germany when most nights are in Italy or France.
  • Sending passbook copies instead of bank-stamped statements.[4]
  • A booking that's been cancelled by appointment day, which Kuwait explicitly rules out.[14]
  • Any invented or edited booking. Refusal, and possibly more.[11]

Questions people ask about Germany and flights

Will a paid ticket make my Germany visa faster?

No. The German missions in India state on their checklists that buying a ticket brings no preferential treatment, and the item they list is a flight reservation. Buying early only adds a cost you may not recover if the answer is no, so hold a reservation and buy once the visa is in your passport.

Can I submit at VFS Kochi if Mumbai decides the file?

Yes. For Schengen visas the German missions accept applications at any VFS centre in India, and all of them are forwarded to the Consulate General in Mumbai. The consular districts only matter for national (D) visas. Allow for up to six working days in transit before the 15-working-day clock starts.

How long before the appointment should I hold the booking?

About three days ahead. A hold survives up to 2 weeks; the airline decides the exact period. One made a fortnight early might have lapsed by appointment day. That matters more in Kuwait, where the checklist demands a non-cancelled reservation, but it's good practice everywhere.

I'm spending five nights in Germany and four in Austria. Where do I apply?

Germany. The German FAQ says you apply to whichever country is the main destination by length or purpose of stay; five nights beats four. If the nights were equal, you'd apply to the country you enter first. Make sure your hotel bookings show the split clearly.

My Iqama runs out in four months. Can I still apply in Riyadh?

Possibly. The Riyadh checklist wants the Iqama valid at least three months after your planned return. With a four-month Iqama, the return flight on your reservation would need to fall within the next month or so. Renew first if the trip is longer.

Does a German national (D) visa need a flight booking?

The German missions' national-visa page in India doesn't mention flights, and each D category has its own list. Check the checklist for your category, such as study or employment, and follow it. Don't assume the Schengen "Flight reservation" line applies.

Is a flight itinerary enough instead of a booking?

Only where the mission says so. The Tanzania mission wants a planned route and says, in capitals, no flight booking. India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait ask for a reservation, and Pakistan for confirmed tickets. A typed plan with no PNR won't meet a reservation requirement.

How much does a Germany flight reservation cost?

You give us the route, dates and passport names; we hold seats on an actual flight and email a PDF with the airline and its PNR. It's a reservation only, never a ticket you can board with.
