Dummy Ticket for Netherlands Visa (2026): Why a Reservation Is What the Dutch Ask For

For a Netherlands Schengen visa you need a reservation in your name for travel into and out of the Schengen area, and the official Dutch checklist states: "You do not need a paid travel ticket." VFS India goes further and tells applicants to make bookings they can cancel in case of refusal. A held return reservation fits both.

Of all the Schengen countries, the Netherlands gives the plainest answer to the ticket question. Its government site, NetherlandsWorldwide, publishes one tourism checklist that applies wherever you apply from, and it says outright that a paid fare is not needed. So this guide spends less time on whether a reservation is acceptable and more on the things that actually catch Dutch applicants out: processing that currently averages 25 days rather than 15, the rule about which country to apply to, cancellable bookings, and the fact that in some countries your Dutch application is handled by another nation's visa centre. For the rules shared by all 29 states, see our Schengen reservation guide.

What does the Dutch checklist say about flights?

Two official documents matter for an Indian applicant, and they fit together neatly.

  • NetherlandsWorldwide tourism checklist (all countries): asks for a booking in your name that covers getting into and out of Schengen, "or another document showing your travel plans". Then comes the key sentence: "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[3]
  • VFS Global checklist for India, section 5 "Proof of travel": "Note: make travel reservations which you can cancel, in case your visa request will be refused." Item 5.1 then asks for a "Flight reservation of return or round ticket" and, for trips to several Schengen states, "proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental."[4]

Our reading: the Dutch wording is about as clear as visa paperwork gets. A reservation is requested, payment is expressly not required, and the Indian list even recommends something cancellable. A genuine held reservation in your name ticks every box. You still describe it as a reservation, of course; the honesty rule does not change because the rules are relaxed.

The VFS list carries a line at the bottom saying it follows the Commission Implementing Decision of 16 October 2015, the EU's harmonised list of supporting documents for India.[4] That is why you may see near-identical flight wording on other Schengen checklists issued in India.

Is a held reservation enough, or should you buy a ticket?

For the Netherlands, a held reservation is enough, and buying early actually goes against the Indian checklist's advice. Here is how the options compare against Dutch wording:

How long does a Netherlands visa take right now?

Longer than many people expect. NetherlandsWorldwide currently lists an average of 25 calendar days for a Schengen visa, citing high season, and says some files take up to 45 days, for example when more documents are needed or the application needs further consideration.[7] The clock starts only when the Ministry's Consular Services Organisation has your documents and passport, not on the day you visit VFS. For some nationalities a mandatory consultation with other Schengen states can add up to 7 days within the 45.[7]

What that means for planning: if your flight to Amsterdam is on 15 June, an appointment in mid-May is cutting it fine. We would aim for late April. You may apply up to six months ahead.[5] The Dutch site also asks you not to chase the embassy or VFS about status while you wait.[7]

Because the wait is long, timing the reservation matters. Book it a few days before the appointment so it is live on the day you submit. Our booking form tells you how long the hold lasts before you commit any money. After the decision you buy the real ticket, so a reservation lapsing during processing is expected and is exactly why the Indian list prefers cancellable bookings.

Where do you apply for a Dutch visa?

In India you book online with VFS Global and attend in person at one of twelve centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jalandhar or Cochin. That covers people living in India, Afghanistan or Bhutan.[5] Even children must appear. NetherlandsWorldwide warns against paying an intermediary for an appointment and says VFS service costs apply on top of the visa fee.[5]

Outside India the arrangement varies more than people assume:

Where you liveWhere a Dutch application goes
India, Afghanistan, BhutanVFS Global, 12 Indian cities[5]
United Arab EmiratesVFS Global in Abu Dhabi or Dubai; the same centres also take Luxembourg applications[9]
NigeriaTLScontact: the Belgian centre in Abuja for listed northern and central states, the French centre in Lagos for the rest[10]
Source: NetherlandsWorldwide country pages. Last checked: October 2026.

The Nigerian arrangement is a good reminder to read the checklist the receiving centre gives you. If a Belgian or French centre takes your Dutch file, its own list is the one to follow, and its flight wording may not match the Dutch text quoted above.

Should you be applying to the Netherlands at all?

The EU rule is the same everywhere: apply to your main destination.[1] NetherlandsWorldwide sets out the order of questions. First, if your trip has different purposes in different countries, apply to the country of the main purpose. If the purpose is the same throughout, apply where you stay longest, and if stays are equal, to the country you visit first.[8]

The Dutch page gives worked examples; here are two of our own. Amsterdam five nights and Brussels two, all sightseeing: the Netherlands. A two-day trade meeting in Rotterdam followed by a week's holiday in Spain: the business purpose arguably makes the Netherlands the main one, which matches the Dutch page's own business-and-holiday example, but if in doubt ask VFS before you book.[8] Our itinerary guide covers more combinations.

If the trip does include other countries, the India checklist wants the connecting legs: an intra-Schengen flight, a train itinerary or a car rental,[4] plus lodging in each country.[4] A multi-city reservation keeps that tidy, and a hotel booking for visa covers nights you have not settled.

What else does the VFS India list ask for?

The flight is one line on a five-page checklist. The rest decides most files, so it is worth knowing before you book anything.[4]

  • Money: an original bank statement showing three months of movements, stamped and signed by the bank, plus income tax return acknowledgements for the last two assessment years.
  • If employed: three months of payslips, the employment contract and your employer's statement approving the holiday.
  • If self-employed or a company owner: the company's registration certificate. Retired applicants show three months of pension statements or proof of regular income.
  • If someone hosts or sponsors you: the Dutch proof of sponsorship form.
  • If you are not Indian: proof of legal residence, with the permit valid at least three months after you leave Schengen.

Two practical points from the same list. Documents must be in Dutch, English, French or Spanish, and you hand over the original plus one copy of each. Only your passport comes back; the other papers stay with the file.[4] So print a spare set of everything, reservation included, for your own records.

What should a Dutch visa reservation show?

  • Your name, as the checklist puts it, spelt the way your passport spells it.[3]
  • Travel to and from the Schengen area, so both the inbound and the outbound leg.[3]
  • Dates that match your hotel reservation or rental agreement, which must cover the whole trip.[3]
  • Dates within your insurance, valid across Schengen for the length of the stay.[4]
  • Dates your employer approved; the India list asks for the employer's statement approving the holiday.[4]
  • Your onward country, if you are not going home. Item 8.1 asks for the visa or permit that lets you enter your final destination after Schengen.[4]

Putting the Dutch file together, step by step

  1. Confirm the Netherlands is the correct country using the purpose, length and first-entry tests.
  2. Book the VFS slot yourself, at least four weeks before travel given the current 25-day average.
  3. Fill in the online application form so it carries its unique code.[5]
  4. Book your return reservation a few days before the appointment, then hotels for every night.
  5. Look the PNR up on the airline's site and compare it with the form, using our pre-submission check.
  6. Bring originals and one copy of each document, as the VFS list requires.[4]

After the visa: reading the sticker

The Dutch sticker shows "From" (the first day you may enter), "Until" (the last day you must be out) and "Duration of stay".[11] Buy the real ticket so that both flights fall between From and Until and the days fit the duration. On a multiple-entry visa, remember the ceiling is 90 days in any 180, counted across all your trips, whether in one stretch or several.[11] The visa also belongs to the passport it is stuck in; if that passport expires, carry the old one with the new.[11] If the validity is shorter than your planned trip, change the real booking or ask the issuing office, rather than travelling on dates the sticker does not cover.

Can a Dutch officer look up your booking?

NetherlandsWorldwide does not say how flight documents are checked. A real reservation does open on the airline's site with the booking code and surname, so it can be looked up by anyone with those details. A fabricated booking would count as a false document, a refusal ground under the Visa Code.[2] We do not make fake or edited tickets.

Netherlands visa flight reservation: your questions

Do I need to buy a flight ticket for a Netherlands visa?

No. The Dutch government's tourism checklist wants a booking in your name for the journey in and out, and says plainly that payment is not required. The VFS list for India goes a step further and recommends bookings that can be cancelled if the answer is no. Pay for real flights once the visa is in your passport.

Why does my Netherlands visa take longer than 15 days?

NetherlandsWorldwide currently gives an average of 25 calendar days for Schengen visas because of high season, and up to 45 days in some cases. The count begins when the Consular Services Organisation receives your documents and passport, which is after your VFS visit. Apply well ahead and avoid chasing status during that period.

Will my reservation still be valid when the visa is decided?

Possibly not, and that is normal. What counts is that the booking works on submission day; it supports the application rather than serving as your travel ticket. The Indian checklist expects cancellable bookings for exactly this reason. Once the visa is granted, you book and pay for real flights within the sticker's dates.

Can I apply for a Dutch visa through an agent?

You can use help with paperwork, but NetherlandsWorldwide advises booking the appointment yourself and not through an intermediary, to avoid unnecessary costs. You must attend VFS in person, children included. Fees on the official consular fee page are €90 for adults, with VFS service costs paid on top.

I enter Schengen in Paris but spend most nights in Amsterdam. Where do I apply?

Apply to the Netherlands if tourism is the purpose throughout and Amsterdam has the most nights. The first-entry rule only decides cases where stays are equal. Your reservation can still land in Paris; just add the Paris to Amsterdam train or flight so the route is complete.

Does the child fee in the Netherlands differ from other countries?

The Dutch consular fee list for India shows €45 for children aged 6 to 11 and no fee under 6, while EU guidance describes the reduced fee as covering ages 6 to 12. Use the Dutch fee page for a Dutch application and check it again on the day you pay.

Is a reservation enough if I live in Nigeria?

Dutch applications in Nigeria go to Belgian or French TLScontact centres depending on your state. Their checklist governs what you submit, so read the flight line there. If it asks for a reservation, a held booking fits; if it asks for a confirmed or paid ticket, a held booking may not satisfy it.
