South Africa is unusual in a helpful way. Its own missions have, for years, told visitor-visa applicants not to buy firm flights before the visa is issued, and the holiday checklist used in India accepts proof of a reservation in place of a ticket. At the same time, the border rule is strict: you will not be let in on a one-way ticket without the right permit. This guide covers both ends, the application and the arrival, and the new Electronic Travel Authorisation that Indian travellers can now use at some airports.
South Africa visitor visa key facts
| Question | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Do Indians need a visa? | Yes, for an ordinary passport. In India, VFS Global takes in files on behalf of the High Commission (New Delhi) and the Mumbai Consulate General.[1] The High Commission's own page sends immigration enquiries to a VFS helpline.[6] |
| Visa fee for Indian nationals | "Gratis" (no visa fee). A VFS logistic fee applies: INR 2,040 in New Delhi and Mumbai, INR 2,301 at the other centres listed.[1] |
| Flight document on the holiday checklist | "Valid flight ticket OR proof of reservation."[1] |
| Processing time | Minimum 5 working days in New Delhi; minimum 7 working days at Gurugram, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Goa and Bengaluru. Indicative only.[1] |
| Passport | Valid at least 30 days after you leave South Africa, with at least two blank visa pages.[1] |
| Arriving on a one-way ticket | "Entry will not be permitted on a one-way flight ticket" unless you hold a valid work or study permit, permanent residence or an appropriate visa (South African High Commission, Canberra).[2] |
| Electronic Travel Authorisation | Launched on 12 August 2026; India is among the first eligible countries, for arrivals at named international airports.[3] |
Who needs a visa for South Africa?
Indian passport holders do. India's Ministry of External Affairs lists South Africa among countries offering Indians an electronic visa facility, and since August 2026 there is also an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for some arrivals, covered below.[3][4] If neither suits your trip, the familiar paper route through VFS Global is still open.
Many Western passports do not need a visa for short visits. GOV.UK, for example, tells British citizens they can visit for up to 90 days for tourism or business without one, with a passport that expires at least 30 days after the day they leave and has two blank pages.[5] Visa-free visitors still face the same arrival checks, including the one-way-ticket rule, so the advice on proof of departure applies to them too.
The official holiday visa checklist in India
The VFS page for South Africa in India splits its holiday checklist by region. North and East India (New Delhi, Kolkata, Gurugram and Jaipur) and South and West India (Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru and Goa) are almost identical. Here are the items that matter most, in the page's own terms:[1]
- Passport: valid at least 30 days after departure from South Africa, with at least two unused visa pages. Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Goa and Bengaluru also want your previous passport.
- Form DHA-84: filled in black ink and block letters, signed to match your passport signature.
- Funds: three months of bank statements, signed and stamped, with a balance of R3,000 or the rupee equivalent. Passbooks and net-banking printouts are not accepted.
- Hotel: "Proof of hotel booking, (verifiable)" showing your name, the dates and the hotel's address and contact details. Bookings must be made online or by a South African host or agency.
- Leave letter: a no-objection letter from your employer, school or university.
- Itinerary: "A day-to-day itinerary/travel plan covering your stay in South Africa."
- Flights: "Valid flight ticket OR proof of reservation."
- Photos and cover letter: two recent 35 x 45 mm photographs and a signed letter saying who pays for the trip.
- Children: a notarised parental consent affidavit, less than three months old, and the child's birth certificate.
If you want a multiple-entry holiday visa, the page adds a motivation letter, without which VFS will not accept the application.[1]
Is a flight reservation enough for a South Africa visa?
For a holiday or family visit applied for in India, yes, the checklist itself says so: a valid ticket "OR proof of reservation".[1] That is about as clear as official wording gets.
South African missions elsewhere go further. The High Commission in Canberra asks visitor applicants for a "Travel itinerary showing onward or return flight details" and adds, in capitals, "PRELIMINARY BOOKING ONLY, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE FIRM TRAVEL BOOKING". The same page says "No fixed travel arrangements should be made prior to the issuance of the visa".[2] Different mission, same philosophy: show your plan, don't commit money before the decision.
There is one exception worth knowing. Other visa categories on the India VFS page use stricter words. The business-visit checklist, for instance, asks for a "Confirmed return/onward air ticket".[1] Applying in that category? Then a held booking might fall short; check with VFS or pay for a refundable fare.
| Situation | Official wording | Does a held reservation fit? |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday or family visit, applied for in India | "Valid flight ticket OR proof of reservation"[1] | Yes, that is what "proof of reservation" describes. |
| Visitor visa at the Canberra mission (example of another mission) | "Preliminary booking only, please do not make firm travel booking"[2] | Yes. The mission asks you not to buy firm travel. |
| Business visit, applied for in India | "Confirmed return/onward air ticket"[1] | May not. Ask VFS, or buy a refundable ticket. |
| Arriving at the border | No entry on a one-way ticket without a permit or appropriate visa[2] | Carry your real return or onward ticket. |
The one-way ticket rule at arrival
This is the part people overlook. A visa only gets you to the border. The Canberra mission's page puts it bluntly: a visa "only enables the holder to proceed to a port of entry", and entry will not be permitted on a one-way flight ticket unless you hold a valid temporary work or study permit, a permanent residence permit or "an appropriate visa".[2]
So the reservation that served you well at VFS is not the document for the arrival hall. By the time you fly, you should have bought your real tickets in and out. If your plans changed after the visa, buy the new return before departure rather than hoping a weeks-old reservation is still live.
Airlines know this rule. A check-in agent in Mumbai or Dubai who sees a one-way booking to Johannesburg can reasonably ask how you plan to leave. We go through how that conversation tends to go in check-in versus immigration onward-ticket checks, and in our broader proof of onward travel guide.
What is South Africa's new ETA, and does it change things?
South Africa launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation on 12 August 2026. In the Home Affairs Minister's launch speech, the government said the system began with travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico and would gradually become compulsory for short visits from countries that need a visa. Applications are made at eta.dha.gov.za, with a passport scan and a selfie, for arrival at OR Tambo, Cape Town International, King Shaka and Lanseria airports, with land and sea ports to follow.[3]
We could not open the ETA portal's own requirements page in October 2026, so we cannot tell you from an official source what flight details it asks for or what it costs. What we can say is that the one-way-ticket rule at the border has not been withdrawn on any official page we checked, so plan to arrive with a real return or onward ticket whichever route you use.
Our honest suggestion: if you are flying into one of the named airports, look at the ETA first. If you are arriving overland, by sea, or the ETA does not cover your situation, use the VFS route.
How to put together a South Africa holiday visa file
Say you are flying from Delhi for ten nights, three in Johannesburg for a safari lodge nearby, then seven in Cape Town, leaving on 22 February. Here is how we would build the file.
- Pick your centre. Check which VFS centre serves your state; the page lists jurisdictions for the Mumbai consulate.[1]
- Write a day-by-day plan. The checklist asks for one, so list each night's city and what you will do there.
- Book verifiable hotels online for every night, with your name and passport number where the hotel can add it.
- Get a flight reservation Delhi to Johannesburg and Cape Town to Delhi, with names exactly as in each passport. Include the internal Johannesburg to Cape Town flight if you are flying it.
- Collect the money papers. Three months of stamped statements, and a leave letter from your employer.
- Fill in DHA-84 by hand in black ink, and sign it the way you sign your passport.
- Submit with time to spare. Processing is a minimum of 5 or 7 working days depending on the centre, and can be longer.[1]
- Buy real tickets after approval, on the dates the visa allows.

What your reservation needs to match
- The hotel dates. Arrival day equals first hotel night; departure day equals checkout.
- Your leave letter. If your employer says 14 to 24 February, don't show a flight on the 26th.
- The day-by-day plan. Cities in the plan should be the cities in the flights.
- Your passport validity. At least 30 days beyond the return date shown.[1]
- Every traveller. Children included, with names as on their passports.
Then check the booking on the airline's website before your VFS visit. The method is in how to verify a reservation before submission.
Common problems with South Africa files
- Unverifiable hotels. The checklist specifically says verifiable bookings, made online or by a South African host.[1]
- Net-banking printouts instead of stamped statements, which the page says are not accepted.[1]
- Booking non-refundable flights early, against the advice of South African missions.[2]
- Turning up at the airport on a one-way ticket.
- Missing children's paperwork, such as the parental consent affidavit.[1]
- Any edited or made-up flight document. We don't make them; don't use them.
Getting a verifiable reservation for South Africa
Our job here is narrow: put a real, held booking under each applicant's name on the Johannesburg or Cape Town routing you want, so the "proof of reservation" line is covered without spending on fares. Search the airline's site with the PNR and it shows up. It remains unpaid and unticketed, and you can't travel on it.
One fee per traveller, identical for a single leg or a round trip; when a route has more legs, each pair counts once. Payment runs through Razorpay (UPI, cards, netbanking) and the PDF usually lands about ten minutes later; watch its status on our tracker. The form tells you the hold window for that specific booking before checkout, so order a day or two before your VFS visit, not a fortnight early. For stays, we also do hotel bookings for visa files, but remember VFS wants hotels it can verify.

South Africa visa reservation FAQ
01Does South Africa accept a flight reservation for a visa?
For holiday and family visits applied for in India, the VFS checklist says "Valid flight ticket OR proof of reservation", so a genuine reservation is listed as acceptable. Other South African missions go further and ask applicants not to make firm bookings before the visa. Business visits use stricter wording, so check your category before you rely on a reservation.
02Is there a visa fee for Indians?
The VFS page for South Africa in India shows the visa fee for Indian nationals as gratis. You still pay the VFS logistic fee, which was INR 2,040 in New Delhi and Mumbai and INR 2,301 at the other centres when we checked, plus optional extras like courier or SMS tracking.
03How long does processing take?
VFS lists a minimum of 5 working days in New Delhi and a minimum of 7 working days at its other centres, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Kolkata. These are indicative only, and the page says the High Commission or Consulate may take longer. Leave yourself a buffer before any non-refundable travel.
04Can I enter South Africa on a one-way ticket?
Not as a visitor. South African mission guidance states that entry will not be permitted on a one-way flight ticket unless you hold a valid work or study permit, permanent residence or an appropriate visa. Buy your return or onward ticket before you fly, even if a reservation was enough for the application.
05Should I use the new ETA instead of a visa?
If you hold an Indian passport and will land at OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka or Lanseria, the ETA launched in August 2026 is worth checking first. We could not confirm its fee or flight requirements on an official page, so read the portal carefully. Overland or sea arrivals should use the VFS visa route for now.
06How long must my passport be valid?
The VFS checklist asks for a passport valid at least 30 days after your departure from South Africa, with at least two unused visa pages. Some centres in the south and west also ask for your previous passport. GOV.UK gives British visitors the same 30-day rule and two blank pages.
07My visa dates don't match my reservation. Now what?
Plan the real trip around the visa you were given, then buy tickets on dates inside it. A reservation is evidence of intent for the application; it is not a commitment to fly on those exact days. Make sure the actual return ticket you carry at arrival falls within your permitted stay.
08Do children need extra papers?
Yes. The VFS checklist asks for a notarised parental consent affidavit less than three months old, signed by both parents, plus the child's birth certificate. GOV.UK also flags special rules for children under 18 and for unaccompanied minors entering South Africa, and points to the Department of Home Affairs for the details.
