Dummy Ticket for South African Travellers: Visa Files and Onward-Ticket Checks

A South African passport sits in an unusual middle ground. You can fly to Bangkok, Singapore or Bali without applying for anything in advance, yet Europe, the UK, the US and Canada all want a visa. That splits the flight question in two. For visa applications, a reservation is about showing a plan to a consulate. For visa-free trips, it is about satisfying an onward-travel rule that an airline agent at OR Tambo or Cape Town International may check before you board. This guide takes each half separately and sticks to what official pages actually say.

Where do South Africans need a visa, and what is said about flights?

What do the German missions in South Africa ask for?

The German missions publish a checklist for each purpose of travel. The one for visiting family or friends, dated 18 March 2026, sets out the rules clearly. Under "documents proving purpose of travel" it lists an invitation letter, the host's passport copy, proof of accommodation if the host isn't putting you up, and "Flight reservation (round trip), rail tickets and other if applicable".^[1] The word is reservation. Nothing on that list asks you to pay a fare before the decision.

Several other points on the same checklist matter to South African applicants:

• Processing takes an average of 15 days, and any courier time is added on top. The missions suggest postponing if your trip falls within two weeks of applying.^[1]
• German missions only handle your file if Germany is your main destination.^[1]
• Funds are assessed against a guide figure of at least 45 euros per person per day, depending on circumstances.^[1]
• Children under 18 need a full unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, and a parental consent declaration.^[1]
• False documents or information will most likely lead to refusal or even a travel ban.^[1]

That last line is the reason we only issue genuine reservations that open on the airline's site. A held booking is a real record. An edited "ticket" is not, and it can cost you far more than a refusal.

How do wider Schengen rules apply from South Africa?

The European Commission lets you apply up to six months before travel and, normally, at least 15 days before it, with a standard decision in 15 days that can be extended to 45.^[2] EU law backs the German wording: the Visa Code's Annex II treats a booked return journey as evidence of intent.^[3] Dutch consulates go a step further and tell applicants that buying the ticket is unnecessary.^[4]

What do the UK, US and Canada expect?

United Kingdom. South Africa is on the UK's visa national list, so a visitor visa is needed.^[5] The Home Office's guide to visitor supporting documents names flight bookings among things you don't need to send, apart from transit applications.^[6] We'd leave a reservation out of a UK file and concentrate on funds, employment and ties to home. United States. The State Department's advice to visitor visa applicants is not to buy tickets until the visa is issued.^[7] A reservation is optional at the interview in Johannesburg or Cape Town. It helps you answer date questions precisely and does nothing more.

Canada. South Africans are on IRCC's list of visa-required nationalities.^[8] IRCC's guidance on supporting documents refers to travel plans, which can include flight details.^[9] A reservation shows those details without risking a non-refundable fare. More in our Canada guide.

Where will South Africans be asked for an onward ticket?

On visa-free and visa-on-arrival trips, because nobody reviews your plans before you fly. Three popular examples:

• Thailand. Thailand's foreign ministry lists South Africa among 60 countries and territories on the 30-day visa exemption that took effect on 15 September 2026.^[10] The Thai embassy in London says arrivals under that scheme need an exit booked inside 30 days and somewhere to stay, and the TDAC arrival card is filed in the three days before landing.^[11]
• Indonesia, including Bali. South Africa appears on the visa-on-arrival list published by Indonesia's immigration directorate, which says applicants need a passport valid for six months and a return ticket or a ticket to continue to another country.^[13] That notice dates from 2022, so check the current list before you go.
• Singapore. South Africa isn't on ICA's visa-required list. Its guidance for short visits mentions enough cash plus onward proof, for example a ticket or a visa for your next country.^[12]

Where the rule says "proof of onward travel", a genuine reservation leaving within the allowed stay often satisfies it. Where an airline or officer insists on a paid ticket, a reservation may not be enough, and the decision is theirs. For a straightforward holiday with a fixed return, the paid return ticket covers it. What happens at check-in when you leave South Africa?

The airline checks you against your destination's rules. Behind that check sits Timatic, IATA's reference system that carriers consult for passport, visa and health entry rules.^[14] If Timatic says your destination wants onward travel, the agent at the counter may ask to see it before printing a boarding pass.

We did not find an official Home Affairs rule requiring South African citizens to hold a return ticket to leave the country. Home Affairs does have rules for minors crossing the border, but we could not open the current official page in October 2026, so check dha.gov.za before travelling with children. The German checklist's demand for a full unabridged birth certificate for child applicants is a good hint at what to carry.^[1]

What's a sensible checklist for a South African applicant?

1. Download the checklist for your purpose of travel from the mission's own website.
2. Book your appointment, allowing the 15-day average plus courier time.
3. Plan the route, including any trains or internal flights in Europe.
4. Book accommodation that matches every night of the plan.
5. Order your reservation two or three days before the appointment, with names copied from the passport.
6. Retrieve it on the airline's website using the PNR and surname.
7. Print and sign the checklist, sort documents in its order, and attend.
8. After approval, buy the ticket you will actually fly on.

Here's how that might play out. Imagine you're a nurse in Durban with a VFS or TLS slot on 4 November and a family visit to Cologne from 10 to 24 December. We'd order the reservation on 1 or 2 November for those dates, look it up on the carrier's website the same night, and hold off on any purchase until the visa arrives. That's a made-up example to show timing, not a customer story.

Can one reservation cover a multi-stop trip from South Africa?

Yes, and for many South Africans it should. A typical European holiday doesn't run Johannesburg to Paris and back; it runs Johannesburg to Rome, then Rome to Amsterdam, then Amsterdam home. You can show that as one multi-city reservation. Multi-city routes are priced per pair of legs, and the booking form shows the total before you pay.

The same approach suits Asia. A Cape Town to Bangkok flight with a later Bangkok to Singapore leg shows Thai immigration an exit inside 30 days, and Singapore an onward plan of its own. Keep the gaps realistic, and remember that the paid tickets you fly on must also meet those rules on the day.

One honest caution: the more legs you add, the more places dates can drift apart from your hotels. Line up every night before you order.

What pitfalls catch South African travellers?

• Checking in for Bangkok without onward proof, then scrambling at the counter.
• Onward dates beyond the permitted stay, such as a Thailand exit on day 35 under a 30-day exemption.
• Applying to the wrong Schengen consulate for a multi-country trip.
• Forgetting children's documents like the unabridged birth certificate.
• Ordering a reservation too early, so the hold has ended before the visa officer looks.
• Using a seller whose booking won't retrieve on the airline site. False documents risk refusal and bans.
