Most Kenyans we hear from are heading to Europe, the UK, North America or the Gulf, and the first question is nearly always the same: do I have to buy the ticket before the visa? For the big destinations, the official answer is no. What each country wants instead differs, though, and the German Embassy in Nairobi frames it in a way that is easy to misread. Below we go through the official pages that matter to a Kenyan passport holder, explain what a reservation can and cannot do, and cover the trips where you won't need a visa at all.
Key facts for Kenyan passport holders
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|

| South Africa | Ordinary Kenyan passports are exempt for 90 days per annum.[11] |
| Our price | $9 per passenger, one way or return, by email in about 10 minutes. |
Which visas do Kenyans apply for most, and what about flights?
Here is the official position, destination by destination, as of this month.
| Destination | Visa? | Official flight wording | Our guide |

How does the German Embassy in Nairobi want you to show your travel plans?
It asks for a plan, not a purchase. The embassy's page on Schengen visas for tourism wants a detailed itinerary that sets out the places you'll visit and the means of transport, plus proof of accommodation for the whole stay in the Schengen area, such as hotel or apartment bookings. If a tour operator organised the trip, its documents and the names of fellow travellers go in too.[1]
You will notice there is no line on that page saying "flight ticket". The flight is part of "means of transport". A reservation in your name that shows Nairobi to Frankfurt on the first day of the itinerary and the return on the last day is the cleanest way to back that up. It ties your plan to a real airline record without spending the fare before you know the answer.
Applications go through TLScontact. The embassy gives roughly two weeks for complete applications and says that incomplete ones can take up to 45 days. It also asks applicants to follow their TLS account for updates rather than contact the mission.[1]
The wider EU rules sit behind this. You may apply up to six months before your trip and normally no later than 15 days before it, and a standard decision takes 15 days.[2] Annex II of the Visa Code names a return or round-trip reservation as acceptable evidence of travel plans,[3] and the Netherlands checklist states that you don't need a paid ticket.[4]
Our take: with a two-week turnaround, Kenyan applicants don't need a reservation that sits for a month. Order it a couple of days before your TLS appointment, for the dates in your itinerary, and you're covered for the stage when it is actually read.
Should Kenyans include flights in a UK visit visa application?
Leave them out. Kenya is on the UK's visa national list, so you need a visitor visa.[5] But the Home Office's guide to supporting documents lists flight bookings among items you don't need to send, transit being the exception.[6]
A UK caseworker is weighing your reasons to visit, your money and your reasons to come home to Kenya. Six months of statements, a letter from your employer with your leave dates and evidence of family or property ties do that job. A reservation adds nothing they've asked for. Our UK guide has the details.
What do the US and Canada say about tickets?
United States. The State Department tells visitor visa applicants not to buy tickets until they have the visa.[7] Kenya was not among the countries named in the partial or full US visa suspensions that took effect on 1 January 2026, according to the list the US Mission in Nigeria published.[8] Such lists can be revised, so check travel.state.gov before you pay the fee. A reservation for the interview is optional. It can help you answer "when are you travelling?" precisely, and that is its whole value.
Canada. Kenyans need a visitor visa.[9] IRCC's supporting-documents guidance mentions travel plans, and flight details can be part of that.[10] We'd show a reservation, not a non-refundable fare, because a refusal leaves you holding a ticket you can't use. See our Canada visa guide.
Will anyone check your ticket when you fly out of JKIA?
The airline will. We looked for an official Kenyan immigration rule that requires a return ticket to leave the country and found none in October 2026, so we don't claim one. Carriers, however, run every passport through Timatic, an IATA service holding entry requirements for each country.[13]
That check is driven by where you're going. With a Schengen visa in your passport, the visa is the main thing. Flying somewhere that wants onward proof, the agent may ask for it before issuing a boarding pass. On departure day you should hold the paid ticket you're travelling on. A held reservation is for the visa file, not the check-in desk.

Where can Kenyans go without a visa, and is onward proof needed?
- South Africa. DIRCO's list of passports exempt from South African visas includes ordinary Kenyan passports for 90 days per annum.[11] Immigration officers and airlines can still ask about your plans and your return.
- Singapore. Kenya is not on ICA's list of passports that need a visa. ICA asks short-term visitors to bring sufficient cash and proof of onward travel such as tickets or visas, and not to overstay the visit pass.[12]
On a visa-free trip, nobody reviewed your file before you flew, so the airline and the border do the checking. For a simple return holiday, buy the return. A reservation makes sense for a genuinely undecided onward leg. For more, read our proof of onward travel guide, the onward ticket page and onward versus return tickets.
Reservation, refundable fare or paid ticket: how do they compare?
| Situation | Held reservation | Refundable fare | Paid ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| German Schengen file at TLS Nairobi | Backs up the itinerary's transport | Works, money tied up | Not asked for |
| UK visit visa | Not needed | Not needed | Not needed |
| US interview | Optional | Not needed | Advised against before the visa |
| Canada visitor visa | Shows flight details safely | Works | Risky before a decision |
| Visa-free trip, e.g. Johannesburg | Only for a genuine onward leg | Fine | Simplest choice |
Weighing a flexible fare instead? Read held reservation or refundable ticket for the costs on each side.
What routine works for a Kenyan applicant?
- Read the embassy's own page, then the provider's checklist on TLScontact or VFS.
- Book the appointment and work back from processing times.
- Draft the itinerary, city by city, with how you'll travel between them.
- Book accommodation for every night, matching the plan.
- Order the reservation two days before the appointment, with names exactly as in the passport.
- Open it on the airline site using the PNR and surname; screenshot the result.
- Buy the ticket you'll fly on once the visa is issued.
Picture this as an example. You're an accountant in Westlands with a TLS appointment on 12 November for a Berlin and Munich trip from 15 to 28 December. We'd order the reservation on 10 November for Nairobi to Berlin on the 15th and Munich to Nairobi on the 28th, add the train between the cities to your itinerary, and buy the real ticket after the visa comes back. That's an illustration, not a real client.
How should families and groups from Kenya handle reservations?
Put everyone on one booking where possible, with each name exactly as printed in each passport. A shared PNR makes it obvious to the officer that you are travelling together, and it means one lookup on the airline site covers the whole party. Our price is per passenger, so a family of four on a Nairobi to Amsterdam return pays $36 in total.
Children's names cause the most trouble. Kenyan birth certificates and passports sometimes show names in a different order, and the passport is the one that counts for airline records. If only one parent is travelling, read the checklist carefully for any consent papers it lists for children.
What if the visa takes longer than planned?
Order a new reservation for the updated dates instead of buying a ticket. If TLS moves your appointment or the embassy needs more time, the original hold may have expired. A new one costs the same $9 per passenger. Update the hotel and itinerary at the same time so all three agree.
Which slip-ups cause trouble for Kenyan files?
- Itinerary and flights pointing at different cities. If you land in Berlin, start the itinerary there.
- No transport between cities. Nairobi asks for means of transport; show the train or bus too.
- Sending flight bookings to UKVI instead of stronger financial evidence.
- Ordering the reservation weeks in advance so it lapses before anyone looks.
- Names typed differently from the passport, such as a missing middle name.
- Buying from someone whose booking won't open on the airline site. Altered documents risk refusal and bans; we don't make them.

How do you order a reservation from Kenya?
Open our booking page, enter your route, for instance Nairobi to Berlin with a return from Munich, and type each passenger's name as it appears in the passport. The worldwide price is $9 per passenger, whether one way or round trip; multi-city trips are priced per pair of legs. You pay by card through Razorpay. From Kenya, a Visa or Mastercard enabled for international online payments is the usual option, and your bank sets the shilling exchange rate and any fee.
Expect an email with the PDF, showing airline and booking reference, roughly 10 minutes after paying. Follow the order on our tracking page. The hold window for your route is displayed before payment, which is why ordering close to the appointment works best.

Frequently asked questions
Does the German Embassy in Nairobi require a flight ticket?
Its tourism page asks for a detailed itinerary with places and means of transport, plus accommodation for the whole stay, rather than a purchased ticket. A reservation with a PNR in your name is a sensible way to show the flight part of that plan. The embassy decides on the full file and can ask for more.
How long does a German Schengen visa take for Kenyans?
The embassy says complete applications take about two weeks and incomplete ones can take up to 45 days. Under EU rules you can apply up to six months ahead and normally no later than 15 days before travel. Track progress in your TLScontact account rather than calling the embassy.
Do Kenyans need a flight booking for a UK visa?
No. Kenya is a visa national country, so you need a UK visitor visa, but GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents lists flight bookings among things you don't need to send, unless you're applying to transit. Put the effort into bank statements, employment evidence and proof of your ties to Kenya.
Can Kenyans visit South Africa without a visa?
Yes. DIRCO's list of passports exempt from South African visas includes ordinary Kenyan passports for 90 days per annum. Officers and airlines may still ask about your plans, accommodation and return, so travel with your return ticket details and booking confirmations to hand.
Is there a return-ticket check when leaving Kenya?
We found no official Kenyan rule requiring a return ticket to depart, as of October 2026. Airlines do check your documents against the destination's requirements through IATA's Timatic, so you may be asked for a visa or onward proof at check-in. On travel day, carry the fare you actually purchased once the visa came through.
Can I pay in Kenyan shillings?
Our worldwide price is $9 per passenger, charged through Razorpay. Most Kenyan customers pay with a debit or credit card that has foreign online spending switched on, and your bank converts from shillings at its own rate. If a payment fails, ask your bank to allow foreign online transactions.
When should I order the reservation for a TLS appointment?
About two days before. Each route has its own hold window, displayed on the form at checkout rather than fixed in advance, so a late order keeps it current when the officer looks. Match the dates to your itinerary and hotel, then check the booking on the airline's site.
