Dummy Ticket for Nigerian Students: Study Visas, 2026 Changes and Where a Reservation Fits

A Nigerian student visa file rarely needs a flight reservation: the UK, Canada and the US decide on admission, funds and eligibility. Since 1 January 2026, new US F, M and J visa issuance to Nigerian nationals has been partly suspended. A held reservation is useful mainly for parents' visitor visas, short European courses and university arrival planning.

Studying abroad from Nigeria got more complicated in the last two years. Canada closed its fast-track Nigeria Student Express, the UK narrowed who can bring family, and from January 2026 the US partly suspended new student visas for Nigerian nationals. In the middle of all that, students still get told to "attach a dummy ticket" by agents in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. This guide sorts out what the student visa files themselves need, which is usually no flight document at all, and the specific situations where a held reservation is genuinely useful. For general travel by Nigerian passport holders, such as tourism and business visas, see our guide for Nigerian travellers.

Does a Nigerian student visa file need a flight ticket?

Almost never. The decision rests on your admission document, your money, your academic and English evidence, and for the US, your eligibility under current rules. Take Canada: IRCC wants an acceptance letter, usually a PAL or TAL, ID and evidence of money. Flights don't appear.[3] The UK Student visa requirements centre on the CAS, money and English.[4]

Buying a non-refundable flight before the visa is a common and expensive mistake. Our general student visa guide explains the arrival windows each country sets and why a visa's start date can make an early ticket unusable. We won't repeat those rules here; read that page before you pay for any fare.

What happened to US student visas for Nigerians in 2026?

A notice from the US Mission dated 22 December 2025 set out the change. Under Presidential Proclamation 10998, F, M and J visas for Nigerian nationals, along with other categories, became subject to a partial suspension of issuance starting 1 January 2026. The notice says visas issued before that date were not revoked, and lists exceptions such as dual nationals applying on a passport of a country not covered.[1] The mission's website refused our automated check this month, so read it yourself on ng.usembassy.gov before you pay a SEVIS or visa fee.

What this means in practice:

  • New applicants on a Nigerian passport may be unable to get an F-1 issued while the suspension stands, however strong the file. A flight reservation changes nothing here.
  • Students already in the US on a valid visa were not affected by the notice. But if your visa stamp has expired and you travel home, getting a new one falls under the suspension. Talk to your school's international student adviser before booking a Christmas trip to Lagos.
  • Dual nationals should ask whether their other passport is covered by the exception.

Our US visa guide covers interviews in general.

What does the UK want from Nigerian students?

A CAS from a licensed sponsor, money held correctly, English evidence and, because Nigeria is on GOV.UK's TB list, a tuberculosis test certificate if you're coming for six months or longer.[7] The test is done at an approved clinic and the certificate is valid for six months from the x-ray.[6]

Money is where Nigerian files most often stumble. The monthly figure GOV.UK uses is £1,529 for London courses and £1,171 for anywhere else, multiplied by course length up to nine months. The funds must have been in the account for 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period no more than 31 days before you apply.[5] Plan for exchange-rate swings: a balance that covered the requirement in naira terms in March may fall short by June. Keep a margin.

On family: most taught master's students can no longer bring a partner or children. GOV.UK limits dependants to postgraduate research students, such as PhD candidates, and government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months.[8] Decisions from outside the UK usually take around three weeks, and approved students receive an eVisa.[4] Nothing in this list involves flights.

How has Canada changed for Nigerian students?

The Nigeria Student Express is gone. Its end came the same afternoon as the Student Direct Stream, 8 November 2024, and every study permit filed since then is handled in the standard queue.[2] So build the complete file. That means your acceptance letter, the PAL or TAL most students now need, passport copies and photos, financial evidence, and the explanation letter IRCC recommends.[3]

No flight booking is listed. If the permit is approved, the visa counterfoil goes into your passport, and you shouldn't buy a fare until the passport is back with you. The Canada visa guide covers the visitor side, which matters if your parents plan to visit.

What about Germany and other European study destinations?

Degree-length study in Germany, France or Italy needs a national long-stay visa, not a Schengen visitor visa. We could not open a current German student checklist from the missions in Nigeria this month, so we won't describe one. Follow the list the embassy in Abuja or the consulate in Lagos gives you.

Short programmes are different. A summer school, short course or conference lasting 90 days or less normally falls under a short-stay Schengen visa, and short-stay lists from Nigeria do mention flights. The German missions' tourist list, for example, includes "Flight reservation/booking".[9] Your category may have its own list, so check it, but a held reservation is often the right document for these. Our conference and events guide covers that kind of trip, and our Germany visa page explains how German posts handle visitors.

Do you need a visa to study elsewhere in West Africa?

For a short stay, usually not. Under the ECOWAS free movement protocol, Community citizens can stay in a fellow member state for 90 days visa-free if they hold a valid travel document and international health certificate.[10] A full degree in Accra or Dakar runs far longer than 90 days, so you'll need whatever residence arrangement that country requires for students; ask the university's international office. A flight reservation is rarely relevant. Airlines check entry requirements against IATA's Timatic database at check-in, so carry your admission letter and health certificate.[11]

What gets checked when you fly out of Lagos or Abuja?

Mostly your destination's rules, applied by the airline. We looked for a Nigeria Immigration Service requirement that students show anything special to depart and found none on an official page this month, so we won't invent one. The real gatekeeper is the check-in desk. Carriers compare your documents against IATA's Timatic database, which the industry uses for entry rules.[11]

For a student that usually means the passport, the visa or eVisa evidence, and sometimes the admission document. Carry these in the cabin with you rather than packing them in the hold:

  • Your CAS, letter of acceptance or admission letter, printed.
  • For the UK, the TB certificate and the email confirming your eVisa.
  • For Canada, the approval letter IRCC sent with your study permit decision.
  • Proof of funds and tuition receipts, in case the border officer on arrival asks.

By this stage you should be holding the paid ticket you'll fly on. A reservation has done its job earlier, if it had one at all. It is not something to show at boarding. If an agent at the counter asks how you plan to leave your study country, the honest answer is that you're a student with an approved visa, and the documents above say so.

Where does a reservation actually help a Nigerian student?

  1. Parents' visitor visas. For a Schengen or Canadian visa to attend your graduation or settle you in, flight plans are commonly asked for, and a reservation shows them without paying first.
  2. Short European courses on a Schengen visa, as above.
  3. University arrival forms. Some schools ask for your flight number and arrival time to arrange pickup or a first-night room before you've bought the ticket.
  4. Germany's start date. If a German mission asks for a planned travel date that your insurance must match, a reservation lets you fix it. Our student visa guide explains that link.

Leave it out of your parents' UK visitor applications. The Home Office's evidence guide for visitors tells people not to rely on flight bookings, transits apart.[12] Canada is friendlier to them: IRCC suggests visitors outline their travel plans, flights included.[13]

How should you sequence a study abroad plan from Nigeria?

  1. Check eligibility first, especially the US suspension and UK dependant rules, before paying application fees.
  2. Secure admission: CAS, letter of acceptance, or German admission letter.
  3. Fund the account early and leave it untouched for the required period, with a margin for exchange rates.
  4. Book the TB test for the UK so the certificate is valid at submission.
  5. Use a reservation only where a date is requested: parents' visas, short courses or arrival forms.
  6. Apply, attend biometrics, and wait for the decision.
  7. Buy the real ticket once the visa and its start date are confirmed.

What mistakes do Nigerian students make?

  • Paying for an F-1 interview without checking the 2026 suspension.
  • Funds moved in too late for the UK's 28-day rule.
  • Assuming NSE timelines still apply to Canada.
  • Planning to bring a spouse on a taught master's in the UK.
  • Attaching a "dummy ticket" to a study visa file because an agent insisted.
  • Buying from a seller whose PNR doesn't open on the airline's site. Check with our verification guide and the fake versus legitimate guide.

How do you order from Nigeria, and what does it cost?

Customers in Nigeria pay $9 a head. One-way and return cost the same, and longer itineraries add $9 for every additional pair of legs. Enter the route on our booking page, say Lagos to Toronto and back for your parents, type each name exactly as the passport prints it, and pay by card through Razorpay. A PDF showing the airline and PNR is emailed to you in roughly ten minutes, and the tracking page shows progress.

Holds can last up to 2 weeks, and the airline determines the real length case by case. Order it two or three days before the visa appointment, not when the admission letter arrives. Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians still get US student visas in 2026?

New issuance is restricted. Since 1 January 2026, Proclamation 10998 has partly suspended F, M and J issuance to Nigerian nationals, according to the US Mission, with limited exceptions such as some dual nationals. Visas issued earlier were not revoked. Check the mission's current notice before paying any fee.

Will the UK ask me for a flight booking with my CAS?

No. The UK decides on your CAS, funds held for 28 days, English evidence and, for Nigerian applicants staying six months or more, a TB certificate. A flight booking plays no part. Buy your ticket after the eVisa is issued and you know the date you're allowed to travel.

Is the Nigeria Student Express still running?

No. Both the Nigeria Student Express and its sister programme, the Student Direct Stream, were closed by IRCC on the afternoon of 8 November 2024. Anything filed later goes into the ordinary stream, so prepare the full set of documents, including proof of funds and, in most cases, an attestation letter.

Can I bring my spouse to the UK on a Student visa?

Only in limited cases. GOV.UK allows partners and children for government-sponsored students on courses over six months, or students on postgraduate research courses such as a PhD. Most taught master's programmes no longer qualify, so plan family arrangements before you accept an offer.

What do my parents need for my Canadian graduation?

A Canadian visitor visa, since Nigerians need one. IRCC welcomes an outline of the trip, flights included, so one held reservation listing both parents works well. They should also show their own funds and ties in Nigeria, plus your invitation and graduation details.

How much does a reservation cost from Nigeria?

$9 per passenger for one way or return, paid by card via Razorpay. Every pair of legs on a multi-city plan adds $9. Look for the PDF about ten minutes after paying, carrying the airline name and a PNR to check. You get up to 2 weeks of validity, with the exact expiry left to the airline.
