Kano is one of West Africa's great trading cities, and its traders, students, civil servants and families travel widely. Yet for most visas, a Kano address means a journey before the journey. Few foreign missions process visas in Kano itself, so residents travel to Abuja or Lagos to hand in their files and give fingerprints. The one notable exception is the UK, whose visa partner opened a premium centre in the city in 2025. Below we map which office deals with a Kano resident for each common destination, quote the flight wording on the official lists, and explain how to order a reservation that fits. We run entirely online, so there is no DummyTicketPrice office anywhere in Kano.

Which city will a Kano resident travel to for a visa?
Usually Abuja for Schengen countries that use the Belgian centre, Lagos for the US and most German visas, and possibly nowhere for the UK. That pattern comes from three separate official pages. Netherlands Worldwide says residents of eighteen northern and central states plus the FCT, Kano among them, apply at the Belgian TLScontact centre in Abuja, while everyone else uses the French TLScontact centre in Lagos.[1] The US Mission says Abuja stopped routine visa work on 1 August 2026, leaving Lagos as the only place for ordinary visa interviews.[8] VFS announced the Kano premium centre for UK applicants in July 2025.[6]
Why does this matter for flights? Because the trip to the appointment and the trip abroad are different things. The reservation in your visa file should show the international journey you plan, not your bus to Abuja.
What do Kano residents need for a Dutch or Belgian visa?
A reservation in your name, and no paid ticket. Under the Dutch tourist checklist, a reservation for your journey into and back out of Schengen is enough, or any other paper setting out the plan; it rules out the need to pay for a ticket.[2] You hand the file in at the Belgian TLScontact centre in Abuja, and questions about its status go to that centre too.[1]
The same checklist wants proof that you legally live where you apply.[2] For a Nigerian citizen with a Kano address, that is straightforward. For a foreign national living in Kano, it means a valid Nigerian residence permit, and a permit still running three months after the Schengen trip ends is the example it gives.[2]
What does Germany's Nigeria list say about flights?
Item 9 on the German missions' tourist list, marked "Status: June 2026", reads simply "Flight reservation/booking".[5] Either a reservation or a booking satisfies that wording. Item 5 asks for a copy of your Nigerian residence permit if applicable, and item 13 asks for a travel itinerary.[5] The list warns that unsorted applications will not be accepted, so follow its numbering exactly.[5]
On where to apply, Germany is a little unusual. Kano falls within the consular district of the Embassy in Abuja, yet the embassy processes visas only to a limited extent.[3] The German missions' Schengen page says that as a rule the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for visa applications, with Abuja taking them only in certain cases.[4] The same page warns that forged or false documents lead to automatic refusal and a Schengen-wide entry ban.[4] Leave at least 15 days between lodging the file and flying.[4]
Can you apply for a UK visa without leaving Kano?
Possibly. VFS Global's July 2025 announcement says Nigerian residents can submit applications and enrol biometrics at a premium centre in the Bristol Palace Hotel, 54-56 Guda Abdullahi Road, Kano.[6] The same release described it as opening "for the summer season", so check the VFS booking site for current dates before you rely on it.[6] If Kano slots are unavailable, the standard centres are in Abuja and Lagos.[6] Premium centres charge extra.
As for flights, the Home Office's guidance on visitor documents puts flight bookings among items you need not send, except for transit applications.[7] Our view: leave the reservation out of a UK visitor file and concentrate on income, savings and ties to Kano. Students should read our guide for Nigerian students.
Where do Kano residents attend a US visa interview now?
Lagos. Since 1 August 2026, the US Embassy in Abuja handles only diplomatic and official visas, and routine visa services are available only at the Consulate General in Lagos.[8] Existing appointments were honoured, and unused fee receipts can be used to book in Lagos.[8]
The bigger issue for Nigerian nationals is policy, not geography. From 1 January 2026 the US partially suspended issuance of visitor, student and exchange visas to Nigerian nationals under Presidential Proclamation 10998.[9] Applicants can still apply and attend interviews, but may be found ineligible. A flight reservation does nothing to change that. If you are exempt, for example because you travel on another country's passport, the usual State Department guidance still stands: buy flights only once the visa is granted.[10]
Heading to Abuja or Lagos for an appointment?
Order the $9 reservation a few days before, check its PNR on the airline's website, then print it.
How do the options compare for Kano applicants?
| Destination | Where a Kano resident goes | Official wording on flights | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands, Belgium | Belgian TLScontact, Abuja[1] | Named booking accepted; buying is optional[2] | Held reservation |
| Germany | Consulate General Lagos as a rule[4] | "Flight reservation/booking"[5] | Held reservation |
| Italy | TLScontact Abuja or Lagos; Lagos consulate decides[11] | Use the list for your visa type | Read the list first |
| United Kingdom | VFS Kano (premium), Abuja or Lagos[6] | Only transit cases need flights[7] | Usually leave out |
| United States | Consulate General Lagos[8] | Don't buy before the visa[10] | Optional; check the 2026 suspension |
What should the route look like from Kano?
Whatever you would actually fly. Ethiopian Airlines publishes pages selling journeys to Kano from cities such as London, connecting through Addis Ababa.[12][13] For a European trip, a KAN–Addis Ababa–Europe itinerary is perfectly ordinary, and our Ethiopian Airlines guide shows how those bookings appear.
Many Kano travellers instead start with a domestic flight to Abuja or Lagos and connect onto a long-haul carrier there. That also works on a reservation, as long as it matches your plan. If you would really take the road to Abuja and fly from there, start the reservation in Abuja and say so in your cover letter.
Planning to visit a neighbouring ECOWAS country rather than Europe? Community citizens generally travel within the region under the ECOWAS free-movement protocol, so a Schengen-style reservation is rarely the issue.[14] Airlines may still check onward plans on longer trips. Our onward ticket page covers that.

What if you live in Kano but are not Nigerian?
Your Nigerian residence document becomes a core part of the file. Germany asks for a copy of the residence permit for Nigeria where applicable,[5] and the Dutch checklist wants proof of legal residence in the country of application.[2] Kano is home to people of many nationalities, and missions judge their files on ties to Nigeria.
Three practical rules follow. Bring the return leg back to Kano or the Nigerian airport you actually use. Make sure your permit outlasts the trip comfortably. And check whether your own passport carries extra US or Schengen restrictions; the US suspension, for example, applies by nationality, not residence.[9] Our guide for African passport holders sets out nationality-specific points.
Example: a Kano trader visiting a supplier in Antwerp
Consider Aminu, a textile trader in Kano with a registered business and a Nigerian passport. He wants to visit a supplier in Antwerp for eight days in March and spend two days in Rotterdam. Belgium is the main destination, and Kano residents apply at the Belgian TLScontact centre in Abuja.[1]
He books the Abuja appointment for 9 February and plans to travel to Abuja the day before. His file includes a supplier invitation, company registration, bank statements and hotel bookings. We'd suggest ordering the reservation on 5 or 6 February: Kano to Brussels via Addis Ababa on 10 March, returning on 20 March. Nothing in his reservation mentions the trip to Abuja for the appointment, because that is not part of the journey abroad.
If Belgium's list for business visitors asks for anything beyond a reservation, he follows the list. That is the rule we give everyone.
How close to the appointment should you order?
Two to four days before, especially if you are travelling to Abuja or Lagos for it. Our bookings survive fourteen days at the outside, often less, depending on the carrier's own rules. Leave time for the trip south, so order before you set off and check the booking from your phone the night before. Asked later for newer flight details? Place another order at that point.
How do you order from Kano?
- Work out the right centre from the table above, then download its current list.
- Choose a realistic route on our booking page, from KAN or from the airport you will really use.
- Enter names as printed on the passport, including every traveller on the application.
- Pay $9 per passenger online, the same for single or return.
- Watch your inbox for about 10 minutes, and check spam.
- Open the booking on the airline's site using these steps, then print.
Check where your order stands via order tracking; local-currency prices appear on the price page. If the checklist also asks for accommodation, see hotel reservations.
What mistakes do Kano applicants make?
- Booking the wrong TLScontact centre. Kano belongs with the Belgian centre in Abuja, not the French centre in Lagos.
- Ordering the reservation weeks early, before the appointment date is even confirmed.
- Putting the trip to Abuja or Lagos on the international reservation.
- Using agents who "guarantee" appointments. Germany says it does not work with paid appointment brokers.[4]
- Presenting a reservation as a paid ticket anywhere in the file.
Kano FAQ
Do you have an office in Kano?
No. We trade purely online; there are no premises in Kano, Abuja or Lagos. You enter your details on our website, pay $9 for each passenger, and receive the reservation by email, generally around 10 minutes later. Any business centre in Kano can print it. Support is by WhatsApp and email.
Where do Kano residents apply for a Schengen visa?
It depends on the country. For the Netherlands and Belgium, Kano is on the list of states served by the Belgian TLScontact centre in Abuja. Germany's Consulate General in Lagos handles most German visas, with Abuja taking only certain cases. Italy's consulate in Lagos decides, with TLScontact intake in Abuja and Lagos. Always check the mission's own page first.
Is there a UK visa centre in Kano?
VFS Global announced a UK premium application centre at the Bristol Palace Hotel in Kano in July 2025, describing it as serving the summer season. Check the VFS booking site to see whether Kano slots are currently offered. Otherwise, use the centres in Abuja or Lagos. Flight bookings are generally not needed for a UK visitor visa.
Can I still get a US visa interview in Abuja?
Not for routine visas. Since 1 August 2026, the embassy in Abuja processes only diplomatic and official visas, and ordinary applicants go to the Consulate General in Lagos. If you hold a Nigerian passport, read up on the January 2026 restrictions on visitor and student visas before you pay the fee.
Should my reservation start in Kano, Abuja or Lagos?
Wherever your real journey abroad will begin. If you will fly from Kano with a connection, start in Kano. If you will travel by road to Abuja and fly from there, start in Abuja. Officers look for a believable plan, and a reservation that matches your cover letter and other papers is more convincing than one that doesn't.
Can I board at Kano with this reservation?
No. A reservation holds a seat under a real airline PNR without payment, so check-in will refuse it. Buy your ticket once the visa is granted, for dates inside the visa. Many travellers keep the route they reserved, but there is no obligation to.
When does a Kano reservation expire?
Within fourteen days, on a timetable the airline sets. Order it a few days before your appointment, allowing for the trip to Abuja or Lagos. If the appointment is postponed, or the mission asks for current travel details later, buy a new reservation instead of relying on the old one.
Get a reservation for your Kano application
$9 a traveller, ordered online, with a reference you can look up yourself.
Remember: a reservation supports your file but cannot win a visa on its own. Call it what it is, keep it consistent with your other documents, and let the mission decide.
