Ghana has one of the most helpful embassy pages we have read on this subject. The German Embassy in Accra spells out, in brackets, that a round-trip flight reservation is enough and no ticket is required. Not every mission is that clear, and the UK and US take quite different positions. This guide sets out what each official source says for Ghanaian passport holders, where a reservation from us fits, and where you are better off leaving it out of the file altogether.

Where do Ghanaians most often apply, and what is said about flights?
Europe, the UK, North America and, increasingly, southern Africa and Asia. The table pulls together what we found on official pages this month.

What exactly does the German Embassy in Accra ask for?
Its tourism requirements are short and specific. Alongside your passport, photo, birth certificate and insurance, the embassy lists a "flight reservation for round-trip (no ticket required)", proof of accommodation or a hotel reservation, proof of funds, proof of ties to your country of residence and "a plausible travel itinerary".[1]
Three practical details come from the same pages:
- The visa fee is listed as 90 euros, payable in cash in Ghana cedi or by credit card.[1]
- Incomplete applications are not processed, so you may have to book a new appointment if something is missing.[1]
- Processing is given as 14 days, longer in some cases, and applications should go in at least 15 calendar days before the trip.[2]
Put together, the reading is simple. The embassy expects you to show a planned round trip, not to have paid for one. A reservation with a PNR in your name, covering the same dates as your hotel and itinerary, answers that item squarely.
From our desk: "plausible" is the word to keep in mind. An Accra to Frankfurt reservation for ten days, a hotel for the same ten nights and a day-by-day plan that fits them will look plausible. Three cities in four days with no train tickets will raise questions, whatever kind of flight document you attach.
What does Accra weigh more heavily than the flight?
Money and ties. The flight item is one line; the evidence that you can pay for the trip and will come back takes up most of the list. On its tourism page the embassy asks for bank statements and pay slips covering the past three months, and it warns against statements from unlicensed microfinance institutions or unlicensed banks.[1] For ties to Ghana, it mentions things like a marriage certificate, birth certificates of dependent children, an employment letter, business registration if you are self-employed, and recent personal statements.[1]
The passport rules are strict too. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned stay, have at least two blank pages and have been issued within the past ten years. You also need an original birth certificate with a copy, and travel health insurance covering the whole stay and valid for all Schengen states.[1]
Why does this matter for a flight guide? Because people sometimes spend hours on the "ticket" and minutes on the bank statements. We'd flip that. A reservation takes ten minutes to arrange. A clean three-month salary trail and an employer letter confirming your leave are what tell the officer you will be back at your desk in Tema or Takoradi after the trip.
Do other Schengen embassies in Ghana accept a reservation?
In general, yes, because the rule behind them is common. Annex II of the EU Visa Code lists a reservation for a return or round trip among documents that can show your travel plans.[4] The Netherlands goes as far as saying applicants don't need a paid ticket.[5]
The European Commission's timing rules apply everywhere: apply no earlier than six months ahead and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before the trip, with a standard 15-day decision that can run to 45.[3] Choose the consulate of your main destination. What about UK and US visas from Ghana?
UK. Ghana is a visa national country for the UK.[6] The Home Office's guide to visitor documents names flight bookings among items you don't need to send, with transit visas the exception.[7] In our view, the UK upload is better spent on payslips, bank statements, an employer letter and a clear note on why you're going. US. The State Department's advice is to hold off buying tickets until you have a visa.[8] Ghana was not among the countries named in the US partial or full visa suspensions that began on 1 January 2026, according to the list published by the US Mission in Nigeria.[11] Policies like this can change, so check travel.state.gov before you pay. At the interview in Accra, a reservation is optional; it can help you give exact dates, and that is all.
Does Canada want flight details from Ghanaian applicants?
Ghanaians need a Canadian visitor visa.[9] IRCC's supporting-documents guidance suggests evidence of your travel plans, and flight details can be included.[10] Because Canadian processing can be long, we'd show a reservation with realistic dates rather than buy a ticket months ahead. Is there a ticket check when you leave Ghana?
Ghana Immigration Service publishes no departure rule on return tickets that we could find in October 2026, so this guide doesn't invent one. The check you will meet is the airline's. Carriers screen passengers against IATA's Timatic database, which IATA calls the source airlines use for travel document requirements.[13]
In practice, the agent at Kotoka wants what your destination wants. For a Schengen trip, that is the visa. For a trip where the destination requires onward proof, it may be a ticket out. Either way, by departure day you should be flying on a paid ticket, not a held reservation.
Which visa-free trips might still need onward proof?
- ECOWAS neighbours. Under the 1979 ECOWAS protocol, citizens of member states can stay in each other's countries visa-free for a maximum of 90 days, provided they hold a valid travel document and a health certificate.[15] Onward checks are rare here.
- South Africa. DIRCO lists ordinary Ghanaian passports as exempt for 90 days per annum.[12] Airlines and border officers can still ask about your return.
- Singapore. Ghana does not appear on ICA's list of passports needing a visa, and ICA asks short-term visitors to carry sufficient cash and proof of onward travel.[14]

How should you build the flight section of your file?
- Download the list from the embassy's own site and read the travel and accommodation items twice.
- Book your appointment, then plan dates that leave time for processing.
- Write a day-by-day itinerary that fits your leave and budget.
- Order the reservation two or three days before the appointment, spelling names as on the passport.
- Check it on the airline's Manage booking page using the PNR and surname.
- Match the hotel dates to the flights, night for night.
- Buy the real ticket only after the visa is in your passport.
A quick illustration. Say you teach in Kumasi, your German Embassy slot in Accra is on 25 November, and you plan to visit Hamburg from 22 December to 2 January. We'd order the reservation on 22 or 23 November for exactly those dates, open it on the airline's site the same day, and leave the ticket purchase until the passport is back. This is an example, not a customer case.
What if your Accra appointment moves or the decision runs late?
Re-date the reservation rather than stretching the old one. If the embassy reschedules you, or the decision takes longer than 14 days, the hold on your original booking may have ended by the time anyone looks again. A fresh reservation for the same or new dates costs the same $9 per passenger and keeps the PNR current.
Keep the paperwork consistent when you do this. If the travel dates change, update the hotel booking and itinerary to match, and keep the new reservation printout with your file. What we would not do is buy a ticket "just in case" while the visa is pending; the embassy's own wording says a ticket isn't required, and a refusal would leave you holding a fare you can't use.
What errors do Ghanaian applicants make?
- Reservation dates that don't match the hotel or the itinerary.
- Buying a non-refundable ticket before the decision, when Accra says no ticket is required.
- Uploading flight bookings to UKVI instead of stronger financial evidence.
- Turning up with a missing document; the embassy says incomplete files aren't processed.[1]
- Ordering weeks too early, so the hold expires before anyone checks it.
- Paying an agent whose "ticket" shows no PNR on the airline site. Altered documents can lead to refusal and bans.

How do you order a reservation from Ghana?
Go to the booking page and enter your route, say Accra to Frankfurt return, with each name from the passport. We charge $9 per passenger for one way or round trip; multi-city routes are priced per pair of legs. Payments run through Razorpay, and from Ghana an internationally enabled Visa or Mastercard works best. Your bank sets the cedi conversion and any card fee.

It should match your hotel booking and itinerary. The embassy still decides on the whole file, including your finances and ties to Ghana, and may ask for more.
How long does a German Schengen visa take in Accra?
The embassy states a processing time of 14 days, which can be longer in individual cases, and asks for applications at least 15 calendar days before the trip. Across the Schengen area, applications can be made up to six months ahead. We'd apply well before the 15-day minimum, then order the reservation just before the appointment.
Do Ghanaians need flight bookings for a UK visa?
No. GOV.UK's guide for visitors lists flight bookings among documents you don't need to send, unless you are applying for a transit visa. Ghana is on the UK's visa national list, so the visa is required, but a booking won't strengthen the application. Focus on financial and employment evidence.
Can Ghanaians visit South Africa without a visa?
Yes, for short stays. DIRCO's list of passports exempt from South African visas includes ordinary Ghanaian passports for 90 days per annum. Airlines and immigration officers can still ask about your plans and return, so carry your return ticket details and accommodation information when you travel.
Is there a return-ticket check at Kotoka airport?
We found no official Ghana Immigration Service rule requiring one in October 2026. Airlines check passengers against the destination's rules using IATA's Timatic, so a counter agent may ask for a visa or proof of onward travel. Fly on the paid ticket you bought after approval and you'll be covered.
How do I pay from Ghana, and how much is it?
The worldwide price is $9 per passenger, one way or round trip, paid by card through Razorpay. A Ghanaian Visa or Mastercard enabled for international online payments is the usual choice, and your bank converts from cedi at its own rate. The PDF arrives in about 10 minutes.
Will the reservation still be active when the embassy checks?
It depends on timing. The hold window for your route is shown before you pay, and we don't promise a fixed period. That's why we suggest ordering two or three days before your appointment rather than weeks ahead. You can open the booking on the airline's site with the PNR and surname.
