Ethiopian Airlines Dummy Ticket: Addis Ababa Itineraries for Visa Files

Ethiopian Airlines is the carrier many Indians use to reach Africa, and the one many Africans use to reach Europe, Asia and India. Nearly every route runs through Addis Ababa. So a request for an Ethiopian itinerary usually means one of two files: an African visa or eTA for an Indian traveller, or a Schengen or other overseas visa for an African resident. Below is how Ethiopian's booking tools work, what it publishes on holds and name corrections, and what the destination countries actually ask to see.

What is an Ethiopian Airlines dummy ticket, really?

Think of it as a booking held in your name on Ethiopian's system, retrievable through Manage Booking. Nobody has paid for it, so it won't get you on a plane. Its purpose is to show a consulate, or an online visa form, the dates and route you intend to travel. Where a checklist asks for a flight reservation or an itinerary, it does that job. Some official rules use the words paid or confirmed ticket; there, an unpaid hold may fall short, and we flag those below.

Flying to Africa from India: what do the visa portals ask for?

Each country sets its own rule, so start with the official portal for the place you're visiting. Two common ones:

Kenya. Visitors apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation on etakenya.go.ke. The portal's list of what you need includes a travel itinerary showing arrival and departure, plus an accommodation booking confirmation, and it says processing typically takes three working days.^[6] The wording is itinerary, not paid ticket. Ethiopia itself. If Addis Ababa is a destination rather than a connection, the official portal is evisa.gov.et, which describes the tourist visa as an electronic single-entry visa issued by the Ethiopian government.^[7] We couldn't confirm a published flight-document rule on the portal's public pages, so read the requirements link there before applying. African residents applying for Schengen visas

Ethiopian's network links African cities with Europe through Addis Ababa, and most Schengen lists are satisfied with a booking that hasn't been paid. Germany's embassy in Accra is the plainest case: its tourism list wants a "flight reservation for round-trip" and adds, in brackets, that no ticket is required.^[8] The Netherlands also says a booking for travel to and from the Schengen area is enough, with no paid ticket needed.^[10]

Timing matters more than the airline. Your window runs from six months before travel to 15 days before; most answers come in 15 days, some take 45.^[9] An Accra to Frankfurt return via Addis Ababa, for instance, tells the consulate exactly when you arrive and leave. What about the UK and the US?

Ethiopian also flies people from Africa and India towards London and North America, and neither country wants a flight booking for an ordinary visit. GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide puts flight bookings on its list of weak evidence for visitors, except when transiting.^[11] US consular guidance says the visa comes first and flight spending after.^[12] In both cases you can state your intended dates on the form and buy the Ethiopian fare after approval.

Which Ethiopian itinerary fits which file?

Notice the pattern. Where the authority asks for an itinerary or reservation, a held Ethiopian booking does the job. Where it asks for nothing, don't add paper for the sake of it. And where a rule says paid ticket, buy one.

How do you check an Ethiopian reservation online?

Ethiopian's Manage Booking tool asks for just the booking reference and your last name.^[1]

1. Go to ethiopianairlines.com and open Manage Booking.
2. Type the six-character booking reference (PNR) from the PDF.
3. Enter your last name exactly as on the booking.
4. Press Retrieve and check every flight, date and name against the visa form.

Ethiopian runs country editions of its site (India, Nigeria and Tanzania among them). The lookup works the same way on each, so use whichever opens for you. If it fails, check the surname spelling before anything else. For other airlines' lookup screens, our verification guide has the details.

How does Ethiopian handle names and corrections?

Ethiopian publishes a name change policy, and it's tighter than people expect.^[3]

• Name changes are allowed for USD 50, with supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or passport copy, in set cases: a booking made under the husband's family name instead of the maiden name, or the reverse, and a second given name that was missed at booking.
• Only transposed first, last and middle names, or changes of up to three letters, count as corrections that let the original ticket pay for the reissued one.
• Titles can be amended, for example Mr to Mrs or Ms.
• A ticket can't be moved from one person to another, and tickets bought from travel agencies aren't eligible for a name change.

For a visa reservation the lesson is easy: get the name right first time. Copy it from your passport's data page, including any second given name. Say your passport reads given names "Abebe Tesfaye" and surname "Kebede". Put both given names in, in that order, and don't move Tesfaye into the surname because that's how a friend wrote it. Can Ethiopian hold a fare before you pay?

Yes. Ethiopian's Book Now, Pay Later option locks the fare for one day. You complete payment within 24 hours on the Manage my Booking page or through a local Ethiopian office.^[2] The page also warns that if you pay at an Ethiopian office outside the country of departure, the fare is recalculated and the price may change.^[2]

That's handy when you've decided to buy but need a day to arrange money. It won't carry you through a visa wait.

There's a second reason not to lean on it for a visa. Each hold is a real booking in Ethiopian's system with a payment deadline attached. Let it lapse and re-hold the same flights repeatedly, and you're relying on the airline tolerating that, which no airline promises. A reservation made for the visa file, ordered close to submission, is the cleaner route. Then buy your fare properly, perhaps using Book Now, Pay Later at that point if you need the day.

Ethiopian routes from India

Ethiopian's own press release on its Hyderabad launch says it serves Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Chennai, and Hyderabad joined on 16 June 2025 with three flights a week.^[5] All of them connect at Addis Ababa. So an Indian itinerary on Ethiopian almost always has two legs each way: India to Addis, then Addis to your African or European destination.

Two practical points follow. First, show both legs on the reservation, so the consulate sees where you'll actually land. Second, look at the connection time. A short airside connection is usually simple; a long layover where you'd leave the airport may raise a separate question about entering Ethiopia. Settle that before you book.

When should you book the reservation?

A few days before you submit. Expect up to two weeks of validity from us, with Ethiopian's system fixing the real length. Here's a worked example. Say you're in Pune and plan to file your Kenya eTA on Saturday 7 November for a trip three weeks later. Order the Ethiopian itinerary on the 5th or 6th, open it on ethiopianairlines.com, then upload the details with your application. Kenya says it typically decides in three working days, so the timing fits.^[6] For a Schengen appointment, the same rule applies: order close to the appointment, not when you first start planning.

Will an airline or border ask for a paid onward ticket?

Sometimes, and that's a different test from a visa file. Some countries check at the border or at check-in that you have a way out, and a few insist it's paid. • The PNR opens on ethiopianairlines.com with your last name.
• Given names and surname match the passport, in the same fields.
• Both legs via Addis Ababa appear, each way.
• Dates match your hotel, insurance and any invitation letter.

• Ordering weeks ahead of the appointment.
• Using a reservation where an official rule says paid ticket.
• Assuming you can fix a name later. Ethiopian's correction rules are narrow.^[3]

Price and ordering

Ethiopian costs the same as every airline with us, per passenger, one way or return:

1. Use the booking page to enter your route and dates, and ask for Ethiopian Airlines.
2. Enter names as the passport shows them.
3. Pay by UPI, card or netbanking, processed by Razorpay.
4. Watch your email: the PDF usually turns up in about ten minutes. Order status is there if you want to check.
5. Retrieve it on Ethiopian's Manage Booking page before printing.
