Virgin Atlantic is a Heathrow airline. Almost every request we get for a Virgin itinerary involves London: Indians flying to the US through the UK, UK residents planning a trip across the Atlantic, or someone who needs a transit visa for a long London connection. The UK side of those trips has rules that surprise people, and Virgin's booking rules are stricter on names than most. Here's Virgin's own guidance on finding and fixing bookings, GOV.UK's position on flights, and the cases where our reservation is useful.

Does a UK visitor visa need a Virgin Atlantic booking?
It doesn't. The Home Office guide to supporting documents has a short list of things that carry little weight in a visit application, and flight bookings are on it, with transit the only exception.[5] A caseworker wants to understand your circumstances: income, job, family, previous travel, and why you're coming. A held seat on a Virgin flight into Heathrow tells them none of that.
So if you're in Delhi applying for a six-month Standard Visitor visa to see family in Leeds, skip the flight booking. Put your intended dates in the form, explain the trip in a covering letter, and buy your Virgin fare once the visa arrives. We say this even though it costs us an order. When does a Virgin booking matter for UK transit?
When you're connecting through Heathrow and need a transit visa, the onward flight is central. GOV.UK separates two visas. The Direct Airside Transit visa is for people changing flights who won't go through UK border control. The Visitor in Transit visa covers those who do pass border control but leave within 48 hours.[6] Whether you need either depends on your nationality and the documents you already hold, and GOV.UK lists several, such as an ETA or a Standard Visitor visa, that remove the need.[6]
The supporting-documents guide is specific about evidence. Transit applicants need two things on paper: an onward flight out of Britain, confirmed and leaving inside 48 hours of landing (it cites a booking confirmation as one example), and permission to enter the country they're flying on to.[5]
Example: say you're flying Mumbai to Heathrow on Virgin, then Heathrow to Atlanta the next morning on a separate booking. Your onward Atlanta flight is the proof that you're passing through. Read the transit guidance for your nationality carefully. Should either that guidance or the destination insist on a paid onward fare, an unpaid hold might fall short. How do you open a Virgin Atlantic booking online?
Virgin's "My booking" area handles this, and its help page explains the one quirk that trips people up: middle names.[1]
- Go to virginatlantic.com and choose My booking, then Manage booking.
- Enter the six-character booking reference from your PDF.
- Type the surname exactly as on the booking.
- Type the first name. If a middle name was included when the booking was made, join it to the first name without a space, the way Virgin's own example turns John Robert into JohnRobert.[1]
- Once it opens, put the flights, dates and names side by side with your form.
If it still won't open, the first name field is nearly always the culprit. Try it with and without the joined middle name before assuming anything is wrong. Why are Virgin's name rules so strict?
Because Virgin says so, bluntly. Its Customer Service Plan states that the name on the booking, the ticket and the passport must be exactly the same, and that if they aren't, you won't be able to board.[2] It gives the example of someone known all their life as John whose passport says Jack, and a Jane whose passport spells it Jayne.
Three more rules from the same page are worth knowing.[2]
- Bookings show first and last names only; middle names aren't required.
- The same strictness applies to married and maiden names. Virgin says it no longer accepts a marriage certificate alongside a passport as a fix.
- A misspelling can be corrected up to 2 hours before departure. Bookings made through a travel agent are corrected by the agent; for website or phone bookings Virgin charges £30 per name. The ticket can't be moved to someone else.
For a visa file, this means one thing: use the passport you're applying with as the master copy. If your passport was reissued after marriage, the new surname goes on the reservation, even if your old UK visa used the maiden name. Can Virgin hold a fare or let you cancel within 24 hours?
Yes, within limits written into the Customer Service Plan.[2] A reservation made by telephone can be held at the quoted fare, without payment, for 24 hours. A booking made on the website can be cancelled within 24 hours without penalty. Both only apply when the reservation is made one week or more before the flight. Virgin notes that a website cancellation in that window is done by calling its Customer Service Centre and then applying for a refund.

A 24-hour window doesn't match how long visas take, so neither option is a visa tool. Use them for what they're for.
Flying Virgin to the United States: what the US expects
Virgin's transatlantic network is where most of its passengers are going, so the US rules matter.
If you need a US visa, the State Department is clear that you shouldn't make final plans or buy tickets before the visa is issued.[7] No reservation is needed for the B1/B2 interview. See our US visa guide.
If you travel on ESTA, as British passport holders usually do, federal rules for the waiver programme expect anyone landing by air to carry a ticket home or onward.[8] A held reservation does not meet that wording. If you only remember one row, make it the ESTA one. It's the case where people most often assume a reservation will do, and the regulation says otherwise. The transit row is the opposite: people skip the onward booking because they think the UK never wants flights, when transit is the one place GOV.UK says it matters.
Virgin routes from India: what to know
Virgin's India pages describe flights from Heathrow to three Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with connections onward across India through partner airlines.[4] So for an Indian passport holder, a typical Virgin itinerary is India to London, then London to a US city. That raises two questions: does the UK stop need a transit visa, and does the US leg need a visa? Settle both before you order anything.
Living in the UK and need a Schengen visa? Virgin is built around long-haul flying, so if it doesn't serve your Schengen city, a BA or European carrier is the more natural itinerary. Consulates generally care that the plan is coherent, not which airline you pick. How close to the appointment should you order?
Within a few days of it. Ours last up to a fortnight, and Virgin's system decides the precise cut-off. Here's a worked example. Say your UK transit visa appointment in Bengaluru is on Friday 20 November. We'd order on the 17th or 18th, open it on virginatlantic.com on the 19th, and print it then. Ordering on 1 November would leave you hoping it survives.
If the visa comes through, buy your real Virgin fare for dates inside the visa's validity. If it's refused, nothing needs cancelling, because nothing was paid to Virgin. Read what to do after a refusal before reapplying.

Should I attach a Virgin Atlantic booking to a UK visitor visa application?
There's no need. Home Office guidance ranks flight bookings low for visits, transit aside. Caseworkers look at your finances, work and ties at home. Mention planned dates in the form and your letter, and buy the Virgin ticket after the visa is issued.
How do I retrieve a Virgin Atlantic booking?
Choose My booking on virginatlantic.com, then enter the six-character booking reference, the surname and the first name. If middle names were used when booking, add them to the first name without a space, as in JohnRobert. If the booking still won't load, try the first name with and without the middle name.
Does Virgin need my middle name on the booking?
No. Virgin's Customer Service Plan says bookings should carry first and last names only and middle names aren't required. What matters is that the first and last names are exactly as printed in your passport. A different spelling, a nickname or an old married name can stop you boarding a real flight.
Can Virgin Atlantic hold a fare for me?
Book by phone at least seven days before the flight and Virgin will keep the quoted fare, unpaid, for a day. Website bookings can be cancelled without penalty within 24 hours under the same condition. Neither lasts long enough to cover a visa decision.
Is a Virgin reservation useful for a UK transit visa?
Yes, that's the case GOV.UK carves out. You'll need to show the connecting flight leaves Britain within 48 hours and that you may enter the next country. Check the guidance for your nationality, because some travellers need a Direct Airside Transit visa and others need none.
I'm British and flying Virgin to New York on ESTA. Is a reservation enough for the return?
No. Federal waiver rules call for a ticket that takes you out of America, and an unpaid hold doesn't qualify. Buy a return or onward ticket, ideally refundable if your plans may change. A reservation from us is better suited to visa files that ask for an itinerary.
Can I board a Virgin flight with this reservation?
No. It isn't a paid ticket, so Virgin's check-in won't accept it. Its job is purely to set out your intended journey for an official. Once your visa is approved, buy the real fare from Virgin or a travel agent for the flights you'll take.
