Malaysia Airlines (flight code MH) is a full-service carrier based at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. For a visa file, that matters in one specific way: unlike a low-cost airline, its bookings carry a standard six-character booking reference that anyone with your last name can look up online. Below we go through how Malaysia Airlines' own booking tools work, its unusually detailed name rules, its paid Fare Freeze option, and the places where a held reservation helps or doesn't. Each rule links to the official page we read, and the full list is at the end.
Malaysia Airlines facts for visa applicants
| Question | What Malaysia Airlines or the authority says |
|---|---|
| How do I look up a booking? | Manage My Booking on malaysiaairlines.com, using the "6-digit alphanumeric booking code and last name".[1] |
| Name length and characters | Letters A–Z only; up to 40 characters for the last/family name and 25 for first and middle names; 58 characters in total including title.[2] |
| Single-name passports | Name goes in the Last name field; type "FNU" (First Name Unknown) in First & Middle name.[2][4] |
| Fixing a spelling after ticketing | Once only, conditionally: MYR 50 for small corrections, MYR 150 for more than three characters; title changes free.[3] |
| Can MH hold a fare? | Yes, Fare Freeze: a paid, non-refundable fee holds the fare for 72 hours (or 24 on fares with a 24-hour limit), on bookings made up to 14 days before departure.[5] |
| Malaysia entry for Indians | Visa-exempt until 31 December 2026, up to 30 days, with confirmed return flight tickets, a confirmed hotel booking and the MDAC.[7][8] |
What is a Malaysia Airlines dummy ticket?
It is a booking on real Malaysia Airlines flights, created in the airline's reservation system for your names, route and dates, but not paid for. Because it is not paid, no ticket has been issued and you cannot check in. What it does have is a booking reference that brings up the itinerary on the airline's site.
Think of it as a promise of a plan rather than a seat you own. That is exactly what many visa checklists ask for. The German, Dutch and Japanese lists we have read, for example, talk about a flight reservation or an itinerary with flight numbers, not a ticket you have paid for. Our flight reservation for visa page explains the idea in more detail.
When should Malaysia Airlines be the airline on it? When it is the airline you would really choose. If you're flying from India to somewhere in Southeast Asia or onward to Australia through Kuala Lumpur, MH makes the file read naturally. If your real plan is a direct flight on another carrier, use that carrier instead. Officers notice routes that don't make sense.
How do you check a Malaysia Airlines booking online?
Malaysia Airlines keeps this simple. Its Manage My Booking page asks for two things: the booking reference number and the last name. The airline says it recommends that combination for privacy, because passengers on the same booking reference may view certain data.[1]
- Go to malaysiaairlines.com and open My Booking or Manage My Booking.
- Type the 6-character booking reference from your PDF. Watch for 0 versus O and 1 versus I.
- Type the last name exactly as it was entered on the booking.
- Check the result against your passport and form: every passenger, flight number, date and city.
If it doesn't load, the surname is the first suspect, especially for passports where the airline has split the name in a way you didn't expect (see the next section). Check it the day before your appointment too, since holds don't last forever. Our verification walkthrough covers the error messages airlines show and what each one usually means.
Small tip: use the airline's own website, not a third-party "PNR checker". Only the operating airline's page tells you what its system actually holds.
How do Malaysia Airlines' name rules work?
Malaysia Airlines publishes one of the most detailed name guides we've seen from any airline. The core rule is to enter the name as it appears in the passport, using only the letters A to Z, within 40 characters for the surname and 25 for first and middle names.[2] The interesting part is how it uses the passport's machine-readable zone (MRZ), the two coded lines at the bottom of the photo page.
| Your passport shows | What Malaysia Airlines asks you to enter |
|---|---|
| Surname and given name in separate fields (most Indian passports) | First & middle name in one field, surname in the other, following the "<<" split in the MRZ[2] |
| Only one name, no surname | The name in Last name; "FNU" in First & Middle name[2][4] |
| A hyphenated surname | Remove the hyphen, so the two parts run together[2] |
| A one-letter surname | Double the letter, for example "YY"[2] |
| A name longer than the limit | Use initials for the first names[2] |
| A middle name | Its own field where the route has one; otherwise in First & middle name[2] |
Here's how that plays out. Say an Indian passport has given name "MEENA" and no surname, as some do. On Malaysia Airlines, the reservation reads Last name MEENA, First name FNU. That looks odd on paper, but it is the airline's standard, and it is what the check-in agent expects. If you need to explain it to an officer, the airline's own Booking Guide is the reference.[2]
Fixing a mistake later costs money on a paid ticket. Malaysia Airlines allows a name correction only once after ticketing, conditionally, and charges MYR 50 for small corrections and MYR 150 for more than three characters across the name fields. Changing a title is free.[3] On a reservation from us, you simply tell us before we issue it. That's why we show a preview first. Our name format guide has more Indian examples.

Fare Freeze or a reservation: which is better?
Malaysia Airlines sells its own hold, called Fare Freeze. The airline describes it as a service for reserving flight tickets by paying an upfront fee, with a holding time limit to secure the fare. The main terms:[5]
- It is selected online at the time of booking, or added afterwards through Manage My Booking; it is not sold by the call centre or ticket offices.
- It is available on selected Malaysia Airlines flights, not on codeshares.
- It is offered up to 14 days before departure, and the hold lasts 72 hours from booking creation, or 24 hours where the fare itself has a 24-hour limit, such as promotions.
- If you don't pay the full fare in time, the fare is released and the fee is not refunded. Deadline extensions are "strictly not permitted".
Malaysia Airlines also confirms you won't be charged the full fare if you decide not to go ahead, but the Fare Freeze fee itself is non-refundable and non-transferable.[6]
| MH Fare Freeze | Reservation from us | Paid refundable MH fare | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Lock a price while you decide to buy | Show a planned route for a visa file | Travel, with the option to cancel |
| How long | 72 hours, sometimes 24[5] | Up to 2 weeks; the airline sets the exact period | Until travel, under fare rules |
| Cost if you don't fly | The Fare Freeze fee | Our fee | Any cancellation charges in the fare rules |
| Fits "confirmed/paid ticket" wording | No | May not | Yes |
Our honest take: Fare Freeze is a buyer's tool, built for someone who has decided to fly and wants a few days to pay. Most visa decisions take longer than 72 hours, so it rarely covers the gap between appointment and decision. Use it once your visa is approved and you're comparing prices.
Flying MH into Malaysia: what is checked at the border?
This is where people get caught, so let's be precise. The Immigration Department of Malaysia lists Indian citizens as visa-exempt until 31 December 2026.[7] The High Commission in New Delhi adds that the waiver allows up to 30 days for business, tourism, social or transit purposes, and lists what Indian visitors must meet at screening:[8]
- Passport validity: at least six months.
- Flights: "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets".
- Accommodation: "Confirmed Hotel Booking".
- Arrival card: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, submitted online "three (3) days before the arrival date".
Because there's no visa application, there is no stage where a reservation is the right document. The return flight is checked when you arrive, and the wording says confirmed tickets. Book the real return before you fly. The immigration department's MDAC portal also ties eGate use to having submitted the MDAC within 3 days before arrival.[9]
Nationals who need a visa apply for an eVISA. The official eVISA FAQ lists the documents by purpose of visit: for business, "A Return Flight Ticket"; for social visits, a return ticket to the country of origin; and among general uploads, a "Confirmed return ticket if applicable".[10] That wording leans towards a confirmed ticket, so where it applies, a held reservation may not satisfy it. Our Malaysia visa guide goes through the eVISA in detail.
Using MH through Kuala Lumpur for a visa elsewhere
The more common job for a Malaysia Airlines reservation is as evidence for a visa to somewhere else, with a connection in Kuala Lumpur. A few situations we see:
Australia via KL. If your real routing to Australia connects in Kuala Lumpur and your visa process asks about travel plans, a reservation showing that connection explains your dates neatly. Check the destination's own rules on flights before you rely on it. See our Australia visa guide.
A short stop in Malaysia on the way. If the reservation shows you leaving the airport in Kuala Lumpur for a few days, Malaysia's entry rules apply to that stop. Indians are covered by the visa exemption for transit purposes too, under the same conditions.[8]
Schengen with an Asian routing. Consulates care about your entry to and exit from the Schengen area. The legs to and from Kuala Lumpur don't change that, but they must line up with your dates. Our Schengen guide quotes the checklists.

What should you check before you submit it?
Put your passport, your visa form and the reservation side by side. It takes five minutes.
- Names follow the MRZ split, including FNU if you have a single name.
- Every traveller is on it, children included.
- Dates match the form, hotel bookings, insurance and leave letter.
- The route makes sense for where you're going and where you live.
- It opens in Manage My Booking with the code and last name.
- You call it a reservation on every form and cover letter, never a ticket.
If anything is off, tell us before your appointment, not after. A fresh reservation is cheap; a refusal is not.
How do you get a Malaysia Airlines reservation from us?
Add the Kuala Lumpur connection if that's how you'd really travel.
We issue it exactly as typed, so check the preview.
UPI, cards or netbanking. The PDF usually lands in about 10 minutes.
Booking code plus last name in Manage My Booking.
Per passenger, one way or return; multi-city legs are priced in pairs. See the full price list, follow an order on the tracking page, or add a hotel booking for the same dates. A reservation stays valid for up to 2 weeks, and the airline sets the exact period, so order it a few days before you submit.
Please note: a reservation is not a paid ticket and will not get you on a plane. The consulate, airline or immigration officer decides what is acceptable, and nobody can promise you a visa.
Malaysia Airlines dummy ticket: common questions
Can I check a Malaysia Airlines reservation on its website?
Yes. Open Manage My Booking on malaysiaairlines.com and enter the six-character booking code with the last name on the booking. The airline recommends exactly that combination for privacy. If it fails, check how the surname was split; single-name passports use FNU as the first name.
Is Fare Freeze the same as a dummy ticket?
No. Fare Freeze is a paid hold sold by Malaysia Airlines to lock a fare for 72 hours, or 24 on some promotions, before you buy. The fee isn't refunded and the deadline can't be extended. A reservation from us is meant as evidence of a planned route while a visa is decided.
Will Malaysian immigration accept a reservation for my return flight?
Don't count on it. The High Commission in New Delhi lists "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets" among the conditions for Indian visitors, and the eVISA FAQ mentions a confirmed return ticket where applicable. For entry into Malaysia, carry the real return ticket you will use.
What does FNU mean on a Malaysia Airlines booking?
It stands for First Name Unknown. Malaysia Airlines asks passengers whose passport shows a single name to put that name in the Last name field and FNU in the First & Middle name field. It is a standard airline convention, not an error on the reservation.
How much does Malaysia Airlines charge to fix a misspelt name?
On issued tickets, one conditional correction is allowed: MYR 50 for small corrections of up to three characters, MYR 150 beyond that, and title changes are free, according to the AskMH help article. On our reservations, check the preview before payment and we issue it as you confirm.
Can I use an MH reservation for a Schengen or Australian visa?
Yes, if your route really goes through Kuala Lumpur and the checklist asks for a reservation or travel plans. The airline is your choice; what matters is that dates and route fit your form, hotels and insurance. Read the specific checklist, because some missions word it differently.
How far ahead should I book the reservation?
Close to the appointment. A reservation stays valid for up to 2 weeks and the airline decides the exact period, so a few days before submission is about right. If the appointment moves by weeks, order a new reservation nearer the date.
