Japan Airlines Dummy Ticket: Checking It on jal.co.jp and Using It for a Japan Visa

A Japan Airlines dummy ticket is a reservation on JAL flights with no fare paid. Japan's foreign ministry says visa applicants don't need a confirmed ticket and can upload an itinerary instead, so a JAL reservation fits. You can check it in My Booking on jal.co.jp with the reservation number, flight number, date and name.

Japan is one of the easier countries to explain, because its foreign ministry has answered the flight question in writing. You do not have to buy a confirmed ticket before applying; you can upload an itinerary you get by booking one. That makes a Japan Airlines reservation a natural fit for a Japanese visa, and a reasonable one for trips that connect through Tokyo to North America or elsewhere in Asia. Below we cover how JAL's My Booking search works, how JAL wants names entered, why its purchase deadline matters, and what the Japanese embassy in India says about applying. Each official point is linked to the page we read in October 2026.

What is a Japan Airlines dummy ticket, exactly?

It's a reservation on real JAL flights that has been made but not paid for. We create it in your passport name for the dates and cities you choose and send a PDF with the flight numbers, times and six-character reservation number. JAL's website can find it, which is the whole point. An officer, or you, can confirm the itinerary exists.

Nobody can board a plane with it, because it isn't a ticket. JAL is also clear that unpaid reservations don't last; once the purchase deadline passes, they are cancelled without notice.[4] Ours stay valid for up to two weeks, with JAL deciding the exact period for each booking. Describe it on forms as a flight reservation or itinerary.

Is JAL the right airline for your file? If you live in Delhi or Bengaluru and are going to Japan, very likely. JAL flies Delhi to Haneda, added Narita to Delhi in January 2026, and runs Narita to Bengaluru, and it has a codeshare with IndiGo for connections inside India.[5] Someone in Ahmedabad might show an IndiGo-operated leg to Delhi, then JAL to Tokyo. That reads as a real plan.

How do you check a JAL reservation online?

JAL's search form asks for more than a code and a surname, so have the reservation PDF open before you start. According to JAL's FAQ, non-members go to the reservation search screen from the My Booking menu, enter the reservation number, flight number, boarding date and name, and press "Booking Details".[1]

  1. On jal.co.jp, open My Booking and pick the search for non-members (members who added a JMB number can sign in instead).
  2. Enter the reservation number exactly as printed.
  3. Add the flight number and date of any JAL flight on the booking. The first JAL-operated leg is usually easiest.
  4. Type the passenger's last and first name the way the booking shows them.
  5. Compare the result with your visa form: names, both directions, dates and airports.

Where people go wrong: they enter the flight number of an IndiGo-operated connection, or the date in the wrong time zone. Use a JAL-operated flight and its local departure date. If it still refuses, send us the reference and we'll check. Our step-by-step verification guide covers the general approach for other carriers.

How does JAL want names entered?

JAL's rule is short: enter the name as it appears on the passport you'll use for boarding. Its booking form runs in the order last name, first name, middle name, and if the passport shows a middle name, JAL wants it in the middle-name field. Anything in brackets on the passport is left out, and JAL warns that a name spelled differently from the passport can stop you boarding.[2]

That differs from some airlines that fold middle names into the given-name box, so it's worth a moment. Say your passport reads surname IYER, given names ANANYA MEERA. On a JAL booking you'd typically have IYER as last name, ANANYA as first name and MEERA as middle name. Tell us on the form which word is which and we'll place them accordingly. Don't add a name that isn't in the passport, and don't drop one that is.

For the officer, what matters is that the reservation and the passport agree, word for word. Our name format guide has more examples, including single-name passports.

Why does JAL's purchase deadline matter for a visa?

Because it is the reason any unpaid JAL booking eventually disappears. JAL's India booking rules say reservations and purchases on its website are possible until 11:59 pm the day before the flight, or up to six hours before late-night departures after midnight, and that fares with their own purchase deadline must be bought within it.[3] Its FAQ adds that the deadline can't be extended and that unpaid reservations are cancelled automatically.[4]

JAL doesn't sell a paid "hold" product on its India site the way some airlines do, and we couldn't find a general free 24-hour cancellation on that site's rules page. What it does publish for paid tickets bought online: changes up to 72 hours before departure without a ticket service fee, and refunds until three hours before departure, with fare-rule charges and possible exchange-rate differences.[3]

What does Japan ask for about flights?

Japan's eVISA FAQ is the clearest official answer we know of on this topic. Asked whether applicants must buy a confirmed ticket first, it says no, and that you can upload a flight or ship itinerary you get by booking a ticket.[7] The same FAQ explains that the length of stay granted, 15, 30 or 90 days, is decided partly from the itinerary you give, and that an eVISA must be used to enter Japan within three months of issue.[7] So the dates on your JAL reservation aren't a formality. They shape what the embassy grants.

For applicants in India, the Embassy of Japan says to submit through VFS without a prior appointment, that applications are accepted from three months before the travel date, and that processing times can vary significantly and can't be expedited. Its page lists the fee for Indian nationals, from 1 July 2026, as ₹500 for a single or multiple visa, plus the VFS service fee. It also notes that the JAPAN eVISA system started in India on 1 April 2024.[8]

Put those together and a sensible order looks like this. Decide your dates. Order the JAL reservation a few days before you go to VFS. Submit. Once the visa arrives, buy the real ticket for the same dates, or close to them. If the visa comes back for fewer days than you asked, change the plan to fit the visa, not the other way round. Our Japan visa guide covers the rest of the document list, and onward tickets for Japan covers arrival.

Travelling to Japan as a family

Japan's eVISA system lets families apply together, and the FAQ sets one condition that touches your flights: family members applying as a group must be travelling to Japan together on the same itinerary, with the same arrival and departure dates.[7] Once the principal applicant has finished, the others are added from the same account.

So for a family file, put everyone on one JAL reservation, not separate ones made on different days. Picture parents and two children flying Bengaluru to Narita together. One booking with four names and identical dates reads exactly as the embassy expects. Four bookings with slightly different flights invite a question about if you're really travelling as a unit. If one person is joining later or leaving early, that person isn't on "the same itinerary", and you should check with VFS how to apply.

Infants and children need their own names on the reservation too, written as in their own passports.

Which other visas suit a JAL reservation?

JAL is a oneworld member, and its Tokyo hubs connect India with North America and East Asia.[6][5] A few common cases:

TripOfficial line on flightsOur view
Japan tourism or family visitNo confirmed ticket needed; upload an itinerary.[7]The best fit for a JAL reservation.
USA via TokyoThe State Department advises not buying tickets until the visa is issued.[9]Optional. Useful if you want to show a plan; not a listed requirement.
Canada via TokyoIRCC suggests travel details such as an itinerary.[10]Fits as supporting evidence.

If you're a traveller from India doing a multi-country trip, our requirements by country page shows where a reservation is enough and where it isn't.

A quick pre-submission check

Five minutes the night before your VFS visit is enough:

  • Every name matches the passport, middle names in the middle-name position.
  • Arrival and departure dates in Japan match the form and the day-by-day itinerary you're submitting.
  • The return flight falls inside the stay you're asking for.
  • My Booking on jal.co.jp still finds the reservation with the reservation number, a JAL flight number, its date and your name.
  • Domestic Indian legs, if any, connect sensibly with the Tokyo flight.

Things to avoid:

  • A reservation ordered weeks before submission. Book it close.
  • Dates that don't match your hotel bookings or the daily schedule in your application.
  • An invented reference from a "generator". JAL's search won't find it, and submitting a fake document is a far bigger problem than having no booking.

When should you order the JAL reservation?

Two or three days before you hand the file to VFS. Here's why, with an example. Suppose you plan to fly Delhi to Haneda on 5 December and submit at VFS on Monday 3 November. Order on Friday 31 October, check it on jal.co.jp on Sunday, and print it. The embassy may well take longer than two weeks to decide, but it looks at the file soon after receipt, not on the last day. Ordering in early October would gain you nothing.

Japan Airlines dummy ticket: FAQ

Do I need a confirmed ticket for a Japan visa?

No. Japan's eVISA FAQ says you don't have to buy a confirmed ticket before applying and can upload a flight itinerary you get by booking a ticket. The embassy uses that itinerary when deciding the length of stay, so make the dates realistic and consistent with your hotel bookings and daily plan.

What do I need to look up my booking on jal.co.jp?

For non-members, JAL's My Booking search asks for the reservation number, a flight number, the boarding date and the passenger name. Use a JAL-operated flight and its local departure date. Members who added a JMB number to the booking can sign in and see it in their list instead.

Where does my middle name go on a JAL booking?

In the separate middle-name field, if your passport shows one. JAL's form runs last name, first name, middle name, and the airline asks for the name exactly as in the passport used for boarding. Leave out anything shown in brackets, and don't add names the passport doesn't contain.

How long will a JAL reservation stay active?

Ours stay valid for up to two weeks, with JAL deciding the exact period for each booking. JAL cancels unpaid reservations automatically once the purchase deadline passes, and that deadline can't be extended. Order a few days before your VFS submission and check the booking the evening before.

Can I apply for a Japan visa from India online?

The Embassy of Japan in India says the JAPAN eVISA system began in India on 1 April 2024, and its visa page also directs applicants to submit through VFS, from three months before travel. Check the embassy page for which route applies to you, and the current fee and processing notes.

Does JAL fly from India?

Yes. JAL's October 2025 announcement describes Delhi to Tokyo Haneda, a Narita to Delhi service from 17 January 2026 and Narita to Bengaluru, plus an IndiGo codeshare for connections within India. Schedules change, so we build the reservation on flights operating on your dates.

If my visa is refused, do I owe anything?

Nothing that costs you more. No fare was paid, so there's nothing to cancel or claim; the booking lapses on its own. If you reapply later, order a new reservation for the new dates rather than reusing the old PDF. An expired booking reference would no longer load on jal.co.jp anyway.
