Ethiopia's tourist e-Visa is unusual among the African visas we deal with: the official requirement list has just two items, a photo and a passport. There is no line asking you to upload a ticket. Yet the application form still asks which airline you are arriving on and the flight number, and the visa's validity starts from the arrival date you type in. So flights matter, just in a different way. This guide explains what the Ethiopian e-Visa portal actually requires, where flight details come in, what changes for visa on arrival and business trips, and the yellow fever point that matters when you fly home to India.

Who needs a visa for Ethiopia?
Almost everyone. The e-Visa portal names only Kenyan and Djiboutian citizens as visa-exempt.[1] Indian passport holders, like UK, US and EU citizens, need either an e-Visa issued before travel or, where their nationality is on the eligible list, a tourist visa on arrival at Addis Ababa. GOV.UK advises UK visitors to apply online before they go rather than relying on arrival.[2]
We would give Indian travellers the same advice. The visa on arrival list is published as a searchable table on the portal, so check your nationality there on the day you plan; it is not something to assume from a forum post. The Ethiopian Embassy in London likewise sends applicants to evisa.gov.et, noting that the e-Visa was rolled out from 1 June 2018 together with Ethiopian Airlines.[6]
Does the Ethiopia e-Visa need a flight ticket?
Not as an upload. Copies of just two things are mandatory for the tourist category on evisa.gov.et: a recent photo and a passport that stays valid six months past your planned entry.[1] There is no mention of a return ticket, an onward ticket or a hotel booking in that list.
Where flights do appear is the travel-details step of the application form. It asks for:
- your arrival date;
- the country and city you are flying from;
- the airline and flight number;
- the type of accommodation, with its name, city, street address and phone number.[1]
So you need a real, planned flight in mind to fill in the form honestly. You do not need to have paid for it. A held reservation with a live PNR gives you a genuine flight number and date to enter, and you can buy the ticket for that flight once the visa comes through. If you already have a paid ticket, use those details instead.
Our take: because nothing has to be uploaded, the reservation's job here is simply to make sure the flight details you type are real and consistent. Enter a flight that actually operates on that date, and then fly on it or one very close to it.
Why your arrival date matters more than usual
The portal says the validity of the visa "starts counting from the date intended to enter Ethiopia".[1] Ethiopian Airlines' published guidance, drawn up with the Immigration and Citizenship Service, adds that a "premature" visa, or one modified electronically, is not acceptable if it is not within its valid period.[3]
In practice that means you should not pick an arrival date casually. Say you apply on 1 March for a 30-day tourist visa and type 10 March as your arrival. If your trip slips to 20 March, ten of your thirty days have already gone, and the visa ends sooner than your holiday. If you arrive early, before the date on the visa, the airline guidance suggests you may not be accepted at all. Book the flight you mean to take, and enter that exact date.
How to apply, step by step
- Use the official site only. The portal itself lists look-alike websites it calls fraudulent, including ethiopiaevisa.com, ethiopiaonlinevisa.com and ethiopia-evisa.com.[1] Type evisa.gov.et yourself.
- Count forward six months from the day you land in Addis Ababa and make sure the passport outlives that date.
- Fix the flight: a paid ticket, or a reservation for the flight you intend to buy.
- Fix the accommodation: hotel name, city, address and phone number for the form.
- Choose 30 or 90 days and fill in the form, using the flight and hotel details exactly.
- Pay the fee online. Applications are not processed until payment goes through.[1]
- Track and download the approved visa using your passport number and reference number on the status page.[1]
- Buy or confirm your actual ticket for the arrival date on the visa.
Leave more than the three-day minimum. Three days is the normal case under the portal's own wording, not a promise, and we would apply a week or more ahead.

What the visa-on-arrival guidance says
Ethiopian Airlines publishes a short guideline from the Immigration and Citizenship Service. Its main points are worth reading before you rely on arrival:[3]
- Arrival visas are for tourism only, and only for eligible countries listed on the e-Visa site.
- An e-Visa payment receipt on its own does not count as approval. If your online application has not been approved before you fly, you may have to pay again on arrival.
- Anyone coming for employment, meetings, NGO work, media work or investment must get approval in advance.
- Passports with less than six months' validity are refused entry.
The same guideline sets a heavy penalty for overstaying a transit visa: USD 3,000 plus USD 30 for every day over.[3] If you are leaving the airport on a stopover, know exactly when your permission ends.
Business trips and meetings
A tourist visa is strictly for tourism. The portal warns that holders of tourist visas "should not be found at any organization in Ethiopia", which is its way of saying no meetings, site visits or workshops.[1] If your trip includes work, the inviting organisation must register on the portal and get a reference code for the matching visa type before you apply. The portal says this applies to business visas generally.[1]

Check-in and arrival at Bole: what gets checked
The portal makes no promise of entry either: officials at the ports of entry "reserve the right to deny entry" to a holder without explanation.[1] At check-in in India expect to show the approved e-Visa, a passport with six months left, and a yellow fever certificate if your route requires one. GOV.UK also notes that travellers from some countries must complete a Ministry of Health survey before arrival.[2]
The official pages we read do not set out an onward-ticket rule at arrival. Even so, carry proof of how you will leave. By the time you travel you will be flying on a paid ticket, so book the way home too. Whatever hold you used to fill in the form will likely have expired, since such holds run up to 2 weeks and the carrier fixes the exact period.
Routes from India and connections through Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa is the home base of Ethiopian Airlines, and plenty of journeys from India to other African cities connect there. So many Indian travellers pass through Bole without ever visiting Ethiopia. If you stay inside the airport on a through booking, you are a transit passenger, not a visitor; if you plan to go into the city on a long stopover, you need permission to enter, so ask the airline what applies to your nationality before you book.

Flying back to India: the yellow fever rule
Ethiopia is on India's list of yellow fever endemic countries, published by the Health Ministry's International Health Ports of Entry wing.[4] The Indian mission in Accra summarises the rule well: from nine months of age, arrivals from listed countries show a card issued by an authorised centre, the card counts only from the tenth day after the jab, and failing that means up to six days of quarantine.[5]
This catches people who only changed planes in Addis Ababa on the way to somewhere else. If your route touches Ethiopia, read the Health Ministry page before you fly and, if it applies to you, get the jab well in advance.
Common slip-ups with Ethiopia e-Visas
- Typing an arrival date you are not sure of, then flying later and losing days of validity.
- Inventing a flight number to get past the form. Enter a flight that really operates.
- Applying through a look-alike site that charges more and may never file the application.
- Using a tourist visa for meetings. The portal is explicit that tourist visa holders should not be found at organisations.
- Treating a payment receipt as approval and flying before the visa is issued.
- Forgetting the yellow fever card for the return to India.

Do I need to upload a return ticket for the Ethiopia e-Visa?
No upload is listed. The tourist e-Visa requirements are a recent passport-size photo and a passport valid for six months from your intended entry date. The form does ask for your arrival date, departure city, airline and flight number, so you need a real planned flight. A reservation or a paid ticket can supply those details.
How much is the Ethiopia tourist e-Visa?
The portal lists USD 62 for a single-entry 30-day tourist visa and USD 152 for a single-entry 90-day one. Extensions are charged separately, at USD 102 and USD 302 respectively. Fees can change, so the amount shown at payment on evisa.gov.et is the one that applies to your application.
How long does the Ethiopia e-Visa take?
Under normal circumstances the portal says three days, and it asks travellers to apply at least three days before their estimated arrival. We would leave a week or more, because payment problems or an incomplete application can hold things up, and the visa should be in hand before you go to the airport.
Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Addis Ababa?
Visa on arrival is for tourism only and only for nationalities on the eligible list published on evisa.gov.et. Check that list for your passport before you travel. Even where it is available, we would get the e-Visa in advance; arrival queues cost time and the airline must be satisfied before boarding.
What happens if I arrive later than the date on my e-Visa?
Validity counts from the arrival date you entered, so a late arrival simply eats into your permitted stay. Arriving before that date is riskier, as the airline's published guidance says a premature visa is not acceptable outside its valid period. Enter the date of the flight you actually plan to take.
Can I attend a meeting on an Ethiopian tourist visa?
No. The portal says tourist visa holders should not be found at any organisation in Ethiopia, and the arrival guidance says meetings, employment, NGO, media and investment trips need approval in advance. Ask your host organisation to register on the portal and obtain the reference code for the right visa type.
Do I need yellow fever vaccination for an Ethiopia trip from India?
GOV.UK links the Ethiopian entry requirement to where you are flying in from: arrivals from risk countries need the card. The bigger issue for Indians is the return: Ethiopia is on India's endemic list, and arrivals without a valid certificate can be quarantined for up to six days. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you leave.
