American Airlines Dummy Ticket: When an AA Reservation Helps a Visa File

An American Airlines dummy ticket is a held reservation on AA flights, not a paid ticket, which you can open on aa.com with your last name and six-letter confirmation code. For a US B1/B2 visa the State Department says not to buy tickets first. Visa-waiver travellers need a paid return ticket. It suits Schengen and transit files best.

Most people who ask us for an American Airlines reservation are doing one of three things. They're applying for a US visitor visa and wonder whether the consulate wants flights. They're visa-waiver travellers who need to show a way out of the country. Or they're routing to Europe or the UK through an American hub and need an itinerary for a Schengen file. Each case has a different answer, so we've split them up below. Every airline rule here comes from aa.com, and every visa rule from the government that sets it.

Do you need an American Airlines booking for a US visitor visa?

No, and the US government says so in plain words. On its Visitor Visa page, the State Department reminds people that a visa is never guaranteed, and asks them to hold off on firm plans and ticket purchases until one is actually issued.[4] The B1/B2 interview is about you: why you're travelling, how you'll pay, and what brings you home again. A seat on an AA flight answers none of those questions.

So should you carry a reservation at all? Some people like having one because the DS-160 asks about travel plans, and a held itinerary makes it easy to give consistent dates. That's a reasonable reason, not a requirement. If you're applying from India, where interview waits can run long, any reservation you make now will have lapsed well before you fly. Our view: for the B1/B2 itself, a reservation is optional at best. Spend your effort on the financial and employment papers instead. The fuller picture, including what the consular officer actually reviews, is in our US visa guide.

Where a reservation from us does help with an American trip is further down the line: a Schengen or UK-transit file built around an AA routing, or a third-country visa that asks for an itinerary.

What about visa-waiver travellers and the return-ticket rule?

This is where people get caught out. Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries don't need a visa, but they do need a way out. The federal regulation for the programme, 8 CFR 217.2, says air and sea arrivals must hold a round trip ticket that takes them out of the United States. A trip that ends in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean only counts if you live there.[5]

The same regulation defines what counts: a return ticket issued to that traveller by a carrier taking part in the programme, good for a year or longer, or comparable paid documents such as vouchers or military orders.[5] A held reservation is not on that list. If you're flying in under ESTA and plan to leave on a separate booking, buy that onward flight, ideally a refundable one. We won't pretend a reservation meets this rule, because it doesn't. Which countries want a paid exit, and which are happy with a plan? Our onward ticket page sorts them.

How do you look up an American Airlines reservation?

American calls its lookup "Find your trip". It sits under "Manage trips / Check-in" on the aa.com home page, and you don't need an AAdvantage account.[1]

  1. Open aa.com and choose Manage trips / Check-in.
  2. Type the traveller's last name as it appears on the booking.
  3. Enter the six-letter confirmation code from the reservation PDF. American's own example looks like JCQNHD.[1]
  4. Click Find your trip and check flights, dates and every passenger name against your visa form.
  5. If the page asks you to log in, look for the guest option; American says non-members can still retrieve a trip with the name and code.

Two habits save trouble. First, look the booking up from the same country edition of aa.com you'd normally use, because regional sites sometimes differ in layout. Second, do it the day before your appointment rather than a week earlier. If something has changed, you'll still have time to fix it. Our step-by-step checking guide covers other airlines' lookup pages too.

What does American say about names?

For anything touching US airspace, names follow the TSA's Secure Flight programme. American's "Flying with American" page says it must collect, at booking, your name as it appears on the government-issued ID you'll travel with, your date of birth and your gender, with a Redress Number optional. It also warns that it may cancel a trip if those details are missing 72 hours before departure.[2]

For a visa reservation, the takeaway is simple: copy the name from your passport's data page, letter for letter. Indian passports often show the given name and surname in separate fields, and some show a single name with the surname field blank. If yours is one of those, tell us when you order and we'll follow the passport layout. Don't shorten "Mohammed" to "Md" or drop a second given name because it's long. Our name format guide goes through the awkward cases, including single-name passports.

The ID requirement also explains why you can't fly on a reservation. American's page says you need a valid passport and any visa or documents your destination demands.[2] Check-in also needs a paid ticket behind the booking. A held itinerary has neither, so it stays on paper.

Does American offer fare holds or a 24-hour refund?

Yes to both, with conditions American sets out in its reservations FAQ.[1]

Free hold. In select markets you'll see a "hold" option on the review-and-pay page when booking an American or codeshare flight on aa.com. The hold lasts up to 24 hours and only applies if departure is 7 days or more away. American also says you can't hold several trips to the same places or around the same dates, and it cancels duplicates.

24-hour refund. If you booked at least 7 days before departure, you have 24 hours from purchase to change or cancel for a refund. After that, non-refundable fares stay non-refundable.

Neither is designed for visa applications. A day is far shorter than any consulate takes to decide, and the anti-duplicate rule means you can't keep re-holding the same trip. Treat both features as what they are: breathing room for a buyer who's still deciding.

Which visa files suit an American Airlines itinerary?

American is a US carrier, so its reservations matter most when your trip starts or passes through the United States. Three situations come up often.

US residents applying for a Schengen visa. If you hold an H-1B, F-1 or green card and want a holiday in Europe, an AA itinerary from your home airport is the natural choice. Consulates open the window six months before your trip and close it 15 days out; a typical answer takes 15 days, the slowest up to 45.[7] Most checklists want a reservation rather than a paid ticket. Dutch missions, for instance, are content with a named booking into and out of the area, and say plainly that paying for the ticket isn't necessary.[8] Our Schengen visa guide and the page for Indians living in the US go into detail.

Indian travellers routing via a oneworld partner. Many trips from India to the US combine American with a partner such as British Airways or Qatar Airways.[3] If your plan stops over in London, the UK side has its own rules (next section).

Third countries on the way. Say you're flying Mumbai to Dallas with a two-day break in Mexico City. The Mexican stop has its own entry rules, which have nothing to do with American. Check each country you'll actually enter.

What if your AA trip involves the UK?

For a UK Standard Visitor visa, GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide lists "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among the documents that don't help a visit application.[6] Transit is different. The same guide says a transit applicant should show that the outward journey from the UK is confirmed and leaves within 48 hours, giving a travel booking confirmation as an example, plus proof they can enter the next country.[6] If your AA trip connects in London and you need a transit visa, the onward flight genuinely matters. More on that in our transit visa guide.

We don't show an American Airlines sample here; this is a British Airways reservation, a oneworld partner on many India–US routings. More layouts are on the sample tickets page.

When should you order the reservation?

Close to the date you'll hand it in. Our reservations hold for a maximum of two weeks, with the precise span set by the airline. So ordering three weeks before a consulate appointment risks the booking dropping off before anyone looks at it. Here's how we'd plan it.

Say your Schengen appointment in Houston is on Thursday 12 November. Order the AA itinerary on Monday the 9th or Tuesday the 10th. Check it on aa.com the evening before. Print it with the rest of your file. If the consulate takes two weeks to decide, that's fine; they assess the plan you showed on the day, and you'll buy the real fare after the decision.

One honest caveat. Some consulates and airlines run their own checks later in the process. If you're asked to show a booking again, order a fresh one rather than trying to stretch the old one.

Mistakes we see with AA itineraries

  • Attaching a reservation to a B1/B2 application thinking it raises your chances. The State Department says don't buy before the visa; it doesn't ask for flights.[4]
  • Landing under ESTA holding nothing but a held booking home. The VWP rule is a paid round trip ticket.[5]
  • Typing a nickname or dropping a middle name that appears on the passport.
  • Booking a hold on aa.com and expecting it to last until the visa decision. It lasts a day.
  • Dates that don't match the hotel bookings, the cover letter or the insurance.

Before you submit: a quick checklist

  • The trip opens on aa.com under Manage trips / Check-in with your last name and the six-letter code.
  • Names match the passport data page exactly.
  • Dates agree with your application form, hotels and leave letter.
  • For Schengen, the itinerary enters and leaves the Schengen area; for UK transit, the onward flight is within 48 hours.
  • For an ESTA trip, the onward or return flight is a paid ticket, not a reservation.

Price and how to order

An American Airlines itinerary costs the same as any other carrier with us, per passenger, one way or round trip:

A multi-city plan is charged for each pair of legs; the price page has worked examples.

  1. Open the booking form, enter the route and dates, and name American Airlines as your preferred carrier.
  2. Type each traveller's name as printed in the passport.
  3. Pay by UPI, card or netbanking through Razorpay.
  4. The PDF lands in your inbox within roughly 10 minutes, and order tracking shows progress meanwhile.
  5. Open the code on aa.com before you print it.

A reservation shows your plan; it doesn't decide anything. The consulate or the airline makes the call. Background reading: flight reservation for visa and our rules by destination. Need accommodation proof too? There's a hotel booking service, and the home page has everything else.

American Airlines dummy ticket FAQ

Does the US embassy want a flight booking for a B1/B2 visa?

No. According to the State Department, nobody should commit to travel or pay for flights before the visa is granted. The interview focuses on your purpose, funds and ties to home. You can give planned dates in the DS-160 without holding any booking. Buy your American Airlines ticket once the visa is stamped.

How do I check an American Airlines reservation online?

On aa.com choose Manage trips / Check-in, type the passenger's last name and the six-letter confirmation code, and click Find your trip. The flights and names should load. You don't need an AAdvantage login for this. Check a day before your appointment so there's time to sort out any problem.

Can I hold an American Airlines fare for free?

In select markets, yes. American's free hold, found on the review-and-pay page, keeps a trip for as long as 24 hours when the flight is a week or more off. It won't let you hold multiple trips for the same route or dates. A day is too short to cover a visa decision.

Is a reservation enough for ESTA travellers?

No. Under 8 CFR 217.2, ESTA visitors arriving by air need a ticket that carries them back out of America; ending the trip in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean only qualifies if you live there. A held reservation doesn't meet that definition, so buy a refundable onward or return ticket.

What name should go on an AA reservation?

Exactly what your passport shows. American's Secure Flight notice asks for your name as it appears on the government-issued ID you travel with, together with date of birth and gender. Avoid nicknames, initials in place of names or dropped middle names. If your passport has no surname field, tell us so we follow its layout.

Can I use an American Airlines itinerary for a Schengen visa?

Yes, if American is how you actually plan to travel. Schengen lists typically want proof of how you'll arrive and depart, and Dutch guidance confirms an unpaid booking is fine. Apply to the consulate of your main destination and keep the dates consistent with your hotels, insurance and leave letter.

How long does the reservation stay valid?

For a maximum of two weeks; American's system fixes the actual cut-off, so no exact day count can be promised. Get it three or four days ahead of the appointment. If a consulate later asks to see the booking again, order a new one instead of relying on the first.

Can I fly with this reservation?

No. Nothing has been paid on it, so American's check-in won't accept it. It exists to show your planned route and dates to a consulate. After the visa is issued, buy a ticket on aa.com or through a travel agent for the flights you'll actually take.
