Dummy Ticket for Italy Visa (2026): What Italian Consulates Ask For on Flights

For an Italy Schengen visa from India, a return flight reservation is enough on the published checklists. Mumbai asks for "Return flight details or airlines reservation printout"; Bengaluru accepts "flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)". Neither demands a paid fare. Add proof of trains or car hire if you also visit other Schengen countries.

Italy is one of the friendlier Schengen countries when it comes to flights. The consulates in India spell out that a printout of an airline reservation will do, and you do not have to buy a fare before you know the outcome. What trips people up is everything around the flight: hotel bookings that must cover each night, proof of internal travel, an insurance policy of at least ten days, and dates that have to agree across the form, cover letter and leave letter. This guide walks through the Italian wording consulate by consulate, then shows how to make your reservation fit the rest of the file. The shared Schengen rules sit in our Schengen visa flight reservation guide; here we stick to what is particular to Italy.

What does the Italian checklist say about flights?

Each Italian post writes its own list, and the flight line changes a little from one to the next. None of the four we read in October 2026 insists on a paid ticket. Here is the exact wording:

  • Consulate General, Mumbai (checklist revised March 2024): under "Air Ticket", it asks for "Return flight details or airlines reservation printout" and then "Proof of all internal travels within the Schengen territory including train bookings, car rentals."[3]
  • Consulate General, Bengaluru (2025 checklist): item 11 reads "Copy of flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)". Item 5 adds that if you visit other Schengen countries, "all travel and accommodation bookings must be submitted."[4]
  • Consulate General, Los Angeles: "Round-trip flight reservation", with means of transport between countries if you visit more than one.[6]
  • Embassy in Dar es Salaam (June 2026): "Round-trip flight reservation (purchase of the ticket is not mandatory)."[7] That is the clearest statement we found from any Italian mission.

Our reading: every one of these accepts a reservation. "Printout" in the Mumbai list simply means a paper copy you hand over at VFS, so print the PDF rather than showing it on a phone. Bengaluru's "tickets or airline reservations" gives you the choice. If you are applying somewhere we have not covered and the list says "confirmed ticket" or asks for proof of payment, a held reservation may not satisfy it; ask the consulate or buy a refundable fare.

Two words in your own paperwork matter here. In the cover letter, call the document a "flight reservation". Do not call it a ticket. Italy's checklists ask for an honest account of your plans, and a reservation is exactly that.

A multi-city reservation can show the flight into Italy, an onward leg and the flight home on one page. Other layouts are on our sample tickets page.

Does a held reservation fit, or do you need a paid ticket?

It depends on the words in front of you, not on the country name. This table sorts the Italian wording we checked by what it means in practice.

Wording on the listWhere we saw itDoes a held reservation fit?
"Return flight details or airlines reservation printout"Mumbai[3]Yes. A printed reservation with a live PNR answers it directly.
"Flight tickets or airline reservations (round trip)"Bengaluru[4]Yes. Either is named; a reservation is the lower-risk choice before a decision.
"Round-trip flight reservation"Los Angeles[6]Yes, as long as it shows the trip out of and back to the US.
"Purchase of the ticket is not mandatory"Dar es Salaam[7]Yes, and the embassy says so in plain words.
"Confirmed ticket", "proof of payment" or "e-ticket"Not on any Italian list we checkedPossibly not. Follow the wording, ask the post, or buy a refundable fare.
Last checked: October 2026. Wording can change when a consulate revises its list.

Our honest view: for an Indian applicant, buying a non-refundable fare to Rome before the visa is decided adds risk and earns nothing. Keep your money for the real ticket once the sticker is in your passport.

Where do you apply for an Italy visa in India?

You apply through VFS Global, and the Italian post that decides depends on the state you live in. Unlike Germany, where any centre forwards to one consulate, Italy splits India into four jurisdictions.[5]

Italian postJurisdiction
Embassy, New DelhiHaryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh. Application centres: New Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh.[5]

The Bengaluru list has a detail worth knowing: your passport should have been issued within that consulate's area, or you must show at least six months of address proof there.[4] If you moved from Delhi to Bengaluru last year, bring a rent agreement or utility bills. The same list asks that the contact details on the form belong to you, "NOT TO THE AGENT", which is a hint that consulates do phone applicants.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

The Embassy lists €90 for a Schengen (C) visa and €45 for children from 6 to 12. National long-stay (D) visas are €116, and study visas carry their own rates.[5] VFS adds its own service charge, shown when you book.

On timing, the Embassy says decisions on C visas are "generally reached within 15 calendar days" and warns that a last-minute file carries "no assurance" of being processed in time.[5] EU rules let you apply up to six months ahead and no later than 15 days before departure, with up to 45 days in individual cases.[1]

Say you plan a ten-day trip starting 20 December. We would book the VFS slot in October or early November, not in the second week of December. Peak months fill early, and a refusal or a request for more papers needs time to absorb.

Is Italy really your main destination?

You apply to Italy only if Italy is the only country you visit, or the one where you spend most nights, or the main purpose of the trip. When stays are equal, the rule points to the country you enter first.[1][2]

Two quick examples. Rome four nights, Florence three, Venice two, then Paris three: nine nights in Italy against three in France, so Italy is correct. Now try Milan three nights, Zurich four and Lucerne two: Switzerland has six nights to Italy's three, and Switzerland's consulate should take the file even if you land in Milan.

When Italy is right, show the whole route. Mumbai wants proof of internal travel such as train bookings or car rentals, and Bengaluru wants every travel and hotel booking for the other countries.[3][4] A multi-city reservation or a flight plus rail bookings works. For more cases, read which Schengen country to apply to.

What should your Italy flight reservation show?

  • Names spelt as in each passport, for every traveller named in the cover letter.
  • A round trip from your city of residence, with the outbound and return dates you wrote on the form. The Bengaluru list says travel dates and length of stay "must be mentioned" on the application.[4]
  • The same dates as your leave letter. Both Indian lists ask for leave sanctioned by your employer, with the dates.[3][4]
  • Hotel nights that match. Mumbai asks for a confirmed hotel reservation covering the travel dates; Bengaluru wants it "confirmed on the booking website".[3][4] Our hotel booking for visa can fill gaps you have not yet booked.
  • Insurance that starts on the flight date and runs at least ten days, even for a shorter trip.[3][4]
  • An airline and PNR that can be opened on the airline's "Manage booking" page.

How to prepare the flight part of your Italy file, step by step

  1. Count your nights per country and confirm Italy is the main destination.
  2. Find your jurisdiction in the table above and download that consulate's checklist from VFS.
  3. Book the VFS appointment. The date of submission is what your reservation has to be current for.
  4. Fix the itinerary: arrival city, internal trains or flights, departure city.
  5. Book the flight reservation a few days before the appointment. The hold window is shown before you pay on our booking page.
  6. Check the PNR on the airline's site, then match names and dates against the form. Our guide on verifying a reservation before submission shows how.
  7. Print everything. Mumbai's wording says "printout", so bring paper.

Once the visa is issued, buy your real ticket for dates inside the validity on the sticker.

Italy-specific slips that weaken a file

  • Insurance shorter than ten days. A six-day trip still needs a policy of at least ten days from the travel date on the Indian lists.[3][4]
  • A hotel booking you cannot show as confirmed. Bengaluru asks for accommodation confirmed on the booking website.[4]
  • No internal travel on a Rome, Florence and Venice route, when Mumbai asks for proof of trains or car hire.[3]
  • An agent's phone number on the form. Bengaluru wants your own contact details.[4]
  • Applying in the wrong jurisdiction, for example to Mumbai while living in Chennai.[5]
  • Leave dates that differ from the flight dates by even a day.

Can the consulate check your reservation?

Italian posts do not publish how they verify flights. What we can say is that a real PNR opens on the airline's website with the surname, so anyone handling your file could look it up. An invented booking is a false document, and Article 32 of the Visa Code lists that as a refusal ground.[2] We issue genuine reservations only and never produce edited tickets.

Applying for Italy from the Gulf or another country

You normally apply where you legally live.[1] In the UAE, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi takes applications only from residents of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, by appointment through BLS International, and points applicants to the Visto per l'Italia portal for the document list.[8] In the US, the Los Angeles consulate says visitors on B1/B2 visas and other temporary residents must return to their home jurisdiction to apply.[6] For Kuwait residents, see Italy visa from Kuwait. Wherever you are, the reservation should start and finish in your country of residence.

Italy visa flight reservation: questions people ask

Do I need a confirmed air ticket for an Italy tourist visa from India?

No. The Mumbai checklist asks for return flight details or an airline reservation printout, and the Bengaluru checklist names tickets or airline reservations. A held round-trip reservation with a working PNR satisfies both. Buy the real ticket only after the visa is issued, for dates within its validity.

Is a dummy ticket legal for an Italy visa?

A genuine reservation held in an airline's system is a normal travel document, and Italian checklists ask for exactly that. What is not acceptable is a fabricated or edited PDF with an invented booking code. Describe what you submit as a reservation, keep the trip real, and the document is honest evidence of your plans.

Which Italian consulate handles my application if I live in Hyderabad?

Telangana falls under the Consulate General in Bengaluru, according to the Embassy's jurisdiction list and the Bengaluru checklist. You still submit at a VFS centre. If your passport was issued elsewhere, the Bengaluru list asks for at least six months of address proof within its area.

Do I need to show trains between Rome, Florence and Venice?

The Mumbai checklist asks for proof of all internal travel within the Schengen territory, naming train bookings and car rentals. Trains inside Italy are internal travel, so including them is the safer reading. A simple printed rail reservation or itinerary for each leg keeps the route easy for the officer to follow.

How far ahead should I book the reservation?

Book it a few days before your VFS appointment, after the slot is confirmed. The reservation needs to be live when you submit, and the hold window is shown before payment. Booking weeks ahead is a common slip, because the hold may lapse before your appointment comes round.

What if my visa is issued for different dates from my reservation?

Fit the real journey inside the dates printed on the sticker, and pay for a proper ticket at that point. The reservation only supported the application; it is not the ticket you fly on. If the validity is too short for the trip you described, contact the consulate that issued the visa.

Can I enter Schengen through another country on an Italian visa?

Yes, a Schengen visa lets you cross any Schengen external border. What matters is that Italy is your main destination. Landing in Frankfurt and spending most nights in Italy is fine; spending most nights in Germany means you should have applied to Germany instead.
