Ghana is one of the rare countries where the immigration service itself says an itinerary printout will do. The catch is that the High Commission in New Delhi, which handles most Indian applications, has used two different phrases on the same checklist: a "confirmed air ticket" in one place and an "air ticket reservation" in another. This guide sets both out word for word, explains which one we would follow, and covers the parts of a Ghana trip that trip people up more often than the flight: the yellow fever card, the arrival desk at Kotoka and the health check when you land back in India.
Ghana visa at a glance
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Do Indian citizens need a visa? | Yes. Visitors without an exemption need a visa, and GOV.UK tells UK visitors the same.[1][4] |
| Who is exempt? | ECOWAS nationals and some other African countries; diplomatic and service passports from selected countries; travellers in direct airside transit.[1] |
| Visa on arrival? | Ghana Immigration Service says nationals of African Union states outside ECOWAS may get one after paying the fee. Indian citizens are not in that group.[1] |
| What GIS says about flights | "Applicant should attach a copy of a return ticket or print-out of travel itinerary".[1] |
| What the New Delhi checklist says | Basic list: "Confirmed air ticket (return/onward journey)". Tourist list: "Air ticket Reservation (return/onward journey)".[2] |
| Passport | An expiry date six months or more beyond your Accra landing.[4] |
| Yellow fever | Certificate needed to enter Ghana, and again to enter India from Ghana.[4][6] |
Who needs a visa for Ghana, and who does not?
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) starts from a simple rule: a non-citizen entering Ghana needs a valid passport and, where necessary, a valid visa.[1] It then lists the exemptions. Citizens of ECOWAS member states, plus some other African countries, are exempt. Holders of diplomatic or service passports from selected countries are exempt. So are passengers in direct airside transit who never pass immigration.
ECOWAS citizens rely on the bloc's 1979 protocol: stays in Ghana of up to 90 days need no visa, provided the traveller carries a valid passport or travel document and a health certificate.[7] For citizens of other African Union states, GIS describes a visa on arrival after payment of the fee.[1] Exemption lists can change, so if you hold an African passport, check the GIS page close to your travel date.
For Indian passport holders, and for UK, US, EU and most Asian passports, the answer is plain: apply in advance.
Where do Indian applicants apply?
Indian residents apply to the Ghana High Commission in New Delhi through its online visa portal. The portal also lists honorary consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata.[2][3] Instructions on the portal say forms must be completed in capitals without overwriting, signed by the applicant, and that every relevant document should be attached when the application is submitted electronically. It also warns that misleading information will delay or sink an application.[2]
We could not open the live portal in October 2026, so the wording below comes from the archived February 2025 copy of the same official page. If the live checklist reads differently when you apply, follow the live one.
Confirmed ticket or reservation? The two phrases on the New Delhi list
Here is the flight wording exactly as it appears on the New Delhi checklist, section by section:[2]
- Basic requirements (all applicants): "Confirmed air ticket (return/onward journey)".
- Tourist / Short Visit Visa: "Air ticket Reservation (return/onward journey)", together with a hotel reservation, or two references in Ghana with their ID proof if you are not being hosted.
- Transit Visa: "Air ticket Reservation (return/onward journey)".
- Business Visa: no flight line at all; the list focuses on an introduction letter, the original invitation, two references in Ghana and correspondence with Ghanaian companies.
And the national immigration service, which sets the rules the mission applies, says a return ticket or a printout of the travel itinerary should be attached.[1]
Which wording should you follow?
Read together, the picture is fairly clear. GIS accepts an itinerary printout in principle, and the tourist section of the New Delhi list names a reservation. The "confirmed air ticket" line sits in a generic block that covers every category. Our reading is that a verifiable return or onward reservation fits a tourist or short-visit application.
But reading is not deciding. The phrase "confirmed air ticket" is on the page, and an officer is entitled to rely on it. So here is how we would play it:
- Tourist or family visit: a held reservation with a live PNR, matching your hotel or host letter. If your appointment slot or your circumstances make a second submission painful, a refundable fare removes all doubt.
- Business: the business list does not ask for a flight. Including a reservation still helps the officer see your dates, and costs little.
- Transit visa: reservation wording, but your onward travel must be real by the time you fly through.
- If the mission asks you for a paid ticket: give them one. A held reservation will not satisfy a specific request for a confirmed booking.
In plain terms: a reservation is honest evidence of a plan. Call it a reservation in your cover letter, and never present it as a paid ticket.
Itinerary, reservation and paid ticket compared for Ghana
| Document | Matches GIS ("return ticket or print-out of travel itinerary") | Matches New Delhi tourist list | Matches "confirmed air ticket" | Money at risk if refused |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain itinerary you typed yourself | Arguably, but nothing to verify | Weak | No | None |
| Held reservation with live PNR | Yes, as an itinerary | Yes | No | Small service fee |
| Refundable return fare | Yes | Yes | Yes | Cancellation charges, if any |
| Non-refundable return ticket | Yes | Yes | Yes | Most of the fare |
How to build a Ghana tourist file, step by step
- Get your yellow fever vaccination first. It appears on the New Delhi checklist for most categories, and the certificate is only valid from 10 days after the jab.[2][6]
- Settle where you will stay. A hotel reservation, or two references in Ghana with ID proof if a friend or relative is hosting you.[2]
- Print your most recent bank statement. It is listed for tourist visas.
- Choose flight dates that match the stay. Arrival in Accra the day your hotel starts, departure the morning it ends.
- Order the flight evidence about two days ahead of submission, so it is still live when the Delhi officer opens your file.
- Complete the online form in capitals, sign it, attach everything and submit.
- Once the visa is granted, buy your real ticket for the same dates, or as close as fares allow.
An example of how it fits together: say you plan to spend 9 to 16 February in Accra and Cape Coast. The file shows a hotel for those seven nights, a reservation into Accra on the 9th and out on the 16th, a bank statement, the yellow fever certificate dated before 30 January, and a short cover letter naming the places you plan to see.
Business and family visits: what changes?
For a business visa the New Delhi list moves the weight from flights to people. It wants a letter of introduction, the original invitation letter (it says a scanned copy, fax or email will not do), two references in Ghana with ID proof, and correspondence with the Ghanaian companies you will deal with. The person inviting you should also fax or email a copy of the same letter to the High Commission.[2]
None of that mentions a flight, yet your dates still have to come from somewhere. A reservation that matches the meeting dates in the invitation keeps the story tidy. For family visits, your relative's letter and ID do the job of the hotel booking, and the flight evidence should start and end around the dates they name.
One small tip from experience: ask your host to write the visit dates into the letter itself. Officers compare that line with the flight dates before anything else.

Details the officer will compare
- Name: exactly as in the passport, including any middle name.
- Dates: the same on the form, the flight document, the hotel booking and any invitation.
- Exit from Ghana: the checklist says "return/onward journey", so a one-way booking into Accra with nothing out is the weakest choice.
- Route logic: if you are combining Ghana with Togo or Côte d'Ivoire, show the onward leg and say how you will cross.
- A booking that exists: the reference plus your surname should pull it up on the airline's site before you hand anything to Ghana's mission.
Arriving at Kotoka: what is checked
Indian check-in staff on an Accra flight normally ask to see three things: the Ghana visa, six months of passport life and the yellow card. GOV.UK confirms both the passport rule and the vaccination rule for Ghana.[4] You will be flying on a paid outbound seat, and we would pay for the way out of Ghana too. The reservation in your visa file is short-lived (up to 2 weeks, exact period set by the airline) and is likely gone by departure.
On arrival at Kotoka International Airport the immigration officer has the final word. Keep your hotel confirmation, return ticket and, for business trips, the invitation letter in your hand luggage. Answers that match the paperwork are what move the queue.
Flights from India to Accra
Most itineraries from India to Accra connect once on the way. Common hubs are Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa and Nairobi. If you connect airside on one booking, your transit rules are usually simple, but they depend on nationality, so check the hub's rules. Our page on transit and layover rules explains the usual traps, and the Qatar Airways and Kenya Airways guides cover their booking lookups.
A connection through Addis Ababa or Nairobi also matters for your health paperwork on the way home, because Ethiopia and Kenya are on India's yellow fever endemic list too.[5]
Back in India: the yellow fever rule
The High Commission of India in Accra has put out a specific notice on this. Travellers older than nine months arriving in India from Ghana must hold a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from an authorised centre. It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. Arrive without it, or too soon after the jab, and you face up to six days in a designated quarantine facility; the notice says even diplomats are not excused.[6] Ghana is on the Health Ministry's endemic list.[5]
Keep the original yellow card with your passport for both legs of the trip.
Errors we would avoid in a Ghana file
- A one-way booking when the checklist asks for a return or onward journey.
- No hotel and no references. The tourist list wants one or the other.
- A yellow fever certificate dated too late, so it is not yet valid on arrival.
- A business trip filed as tourism to avoid getting an invitation letter.
- A "ticket" from a free generator with a PNR that does not exist. Officers who search for it find nothing, and a fake document can end the application.
- Calling a reservation a ticket in your cover letter.
Travelling on a Ghanaian passport instead?
If you are Ghanaian and need flight evidence for a visa to somewhere else, the rules belong to that country. Our guide for Ghanaian travellers covers the Schengen, UK, US and Canadian checklists that matter from Accra. Neighbouring trips are covered in our Nigeria visa guide, and the wider picture for African passports is in dummy tickets for African passport holders.
Ordering a reservation for your Ghana file
For the Ghana file we hold a real seat on the dates you choose and send you the booking reference, which you can open on the carrier's site. Nothing is paid to the airline, so the booking is evidence of a plan and never a way to board.
Whether you need Delhi to Accra one way or a return, the fee is per traveller; a West African circuit with extra legs costs more per additional pair. The email with your booking comes in around ten minutes after a Razorpay payment by UPI, card or netbanking, and our order tracking page shows progress. Because a hold lasts up to 2 weeks (the airline sets the exact period), book it shortly before you submit. If you need accommodation evidence too, there is a hotel booking option. Prices for every currency are on the price page.
Applying to Ghana from India?
Verifiable reservation, emailed in about 10 minutes. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Check the booking yourself using our verification guide before you upload it. You can compare countries on our requirements by country page, read about onward tickets, or start at the home page.
Questions about Ghana visas and flights
Does a Ghana visa need a confirmed return ticket?
It depends which line you read. GIS says a return ticket or a printout of the travel itinerary should be attached. The New Delhi checklist's general block says "confirmed air ticket", while its tourist section says "air ticket reservation". For tourist files a verifiable reservation fits the specific wording; if the mission asks you for a paid ticket, provide one.
Can Indians get a visa on arrival in Ghana?
Not under the rule GIS publishes. Its visa on arrival is described for nationals of African Union member states outside ECOWAS, after paying the fee. Indian passport holders should apply in advance through the Ghana High Commission in New Delhi, and airlines will normally check for the visa before you board.
Is a hotel booking required for a Ghana tourist visa?
The New Delhi tourist list asks for a hotel reservation if a person who invited you is not hosting you. If you have no hotel booking, it asks for two references in Ghana with their ID proof instead. Either way, make sure the dates line up exactly with your flight reservation and application form.
Do ECOWAS citizens need a visa for Ghana?
No. GIS names ECOWAS states among its exemptions, and the 1979 protocol allows visa-free stays of up to 90 days. Bring a valid passport or ECOWAS travel document and your yellow fever card, and remember that Ghanaian officers may still turn away anyone their law treats as inadmissible.
Why does India ask for a yellow fever certificate after a Ghana trip?
Ghana is on India's yellow fever endemic list. Anyone above nine months of age landing from Accra must carry a card dated at least ten days before arrival. India's notice warns of quarantine lasting up to six days for those who cannot show one, diplomats included.
How early should I book my reservation for the Ghana file?
A day or two before you submit is ideal. Your Accra booking can be held for up to 2 weeks, with the carrier deciding the cut-off, and a hold made a month early may have vanished by the time New Delhi reviews it. Choose travel dates you genuinely intend to keep, since they need to match your hotel and form.
Can I list two countries on one Ghana trip?
Yes, show it clearly. If you continue from Accra to Lomé or Abidjan, the reservation should include the onward leg, and your cover letter should explain the route. The checklist wording is "return/onward journey", so an onward flight out of Ghana counts as long as it leaves within your visa's validity.
