Dummy Ticket for Egyptian Travellers: Schengen Files, Military Status and e-Visas

Egyptian applicants face two hurdles that many other nationalities never think about. One is the Schengen paperwork, which in Cairo is detailed and strict about completeness. The other sits at Cairo International itself: for younger men, the exit check looks at military service status long before anyone asks about a return flight. This guide deals with both. It quotes what the German Embassy, the British, American and Canadian governments, and Türkiye's foreign ministry publish, and it flags the places where we could not find an official answer this month.

Reservation or bought ticket: what does an Egyptian applicant actually need?

For most visa files, a reservation. The Cairo checklist for Germany uses the words "existing, valid flight reservation", and it pairs that with a hotel reservation that has a booking number and PIN.^[2] In other words, the embassy wants something it could look up, not proof that you have spent money.

A bought ticket comes later. Once the visa is in your passport, buy the fare you will travel on. Ideally it should match the reserved dates, because the border police at a Schengen airport can ask for the same supporting papers you showed the consulate.

The one place where a reservation does nothing for you is the exit check in Egypt. That check, for men, is about military status, which we cover next.

What do Egyptian authorities check when you leave?

The UK Home Office's country note on military service in Egypt, version 3.0 published in June 2025, brings together the sources on this. It records that men who have not completed or been exempted from compulsory service are prohibited from travelling abroad, and that male travellers must show evidence of their military status. Acceptable proof listed there includes an exemption certificate, an expired passport noting the exemption, or a permission to travel issued by the Conscription Department.^[1] The same note says passport renewals abroad are unavailable to Egyptians who have not settled their service.

We could not open an English-language page from the Egyptian Ministry of Defence or the Passports Authority setting out the current procedure, so treat the above as a summary from a foreign government and check with your local recruitment office before you book anything.

Women and men outside the conscription ages do not face this check in the same way, but everyone should carry the documents the destination asks for. Airlines at Cairo, Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh can refuse boarding if you do not meet the entry rules at the other end.

Germany: reading the Cairo factsheet closely

The German Embassy's tourism and visit factsheet, dated August 2025, is one of the more detailed lists we have read. You register and book through TLScontact, fill in the VIDEX form online and attend in person for fingerprints.^[2] On flights it is short and clear: attach an existing, valid round-trip flight reservation. On accommodation, if you have a hotel reservation with a booking number and PIN, attach a copy.

A few points catch Egyptian applicants out. If you are over 16, live in Egypt and have never had a Schengen visa, you need a certificate of your travel movements from the Mogama, translated into English or German. You can skip it if you can show copies of earlier Schengen, US, UK or Canadian visas. All Arabic documents need a recognised translation, the passport stays with the embassy during processing, and the factsheet warns that applications with missing documents may be refused.^[2]

Timing matters too. The factsheet allows submission from 6 months up to 4 weeks before the trip, and gives a processing time of roughly 2 to 4 weeks. The visa fee is EUR 90, payable in Egyptian pounds, and TLScontact's service fee is separate and not refunded for no-shows or incomplete files.^[2] In our view, a four-week buffer is the minimum you should plan for, and six to eight weeks is more comfortable in summer.

Visiting relatives rather than touring? The factsheet then asks for either a formal letter of commitment, original plus one copy and issued no more than 6 months earlier, or a signed informal invitation with the host's full address and contact details. Either way, include copies of the host's passport and residence permit.^[2]

One more line is worth quoting in spirit. The embassy warns that agencies and other third parties sometimes give false information, and that forged documents or incorrect statements lead to refusal and possibly an entry ban.^[2] That is exactly why your reservation must be genuine and must open on the airline's site.

Other Schengen consulates

Every Schengen state applies the same Visa Code, which lists a reservation as acceptable evidence of the planned journey.^[3] The Dutch checklist adds in plain words that a purchased ticket is not needed.^[4] France, Italy and Spain publish their own lists through their providers; download the one for your city and purpose. UK, US and Canada

The UK is the odd one out. GOV.UK's document guide treats flight bookings as poor evidence for a visit, transit applications excepted, so we would rather you spent the effort on proof of income, savings and family ties.^[5] The US State Department advises waiting for the visa before purchasing any ticket.^[6] IRCC wants Canadian visitor applicants to describe their trip, and an itinerary with flights is one way to do it.^[7]

Which nearby trips use e-Visas or arrival rules instead?

• Türkiye. Egyptian passport holders generally need a visa. Türkiye's foreign ministry says those under 15 or over 45 can get an e-Visa without further conditions, while those aged 15 to 45 can get a 30-day single-entry e-Visa if they already hold a valid visa from a Schengen state, America, Britain or Ireland and travel on Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, EgyptAir or Air Cairo.^[8] Check the official e-Visa portal for the full terms first.
• Maldives. A tourist visa is issued on arrival to all nationalities, but immigration lists confirmed return tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking and enough funds, and every traveller files an online declaration in the four days before landing.^[10] Buy the return fare for this one.
• Thailand. Egypt is not among the 60 countries on the 30-day exemption list in Thailand's revised scheme from 15 September 2026.^[9] Check with the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo for the visa that applies.

In what order should an Egyptian applicant prepare things?

1. Settle military status first if you are a man of conscription age.
2. Fetch the current factsheet from the embassy or TLScontact and note its date.
3. Request the Mogama travel certificate early if this is your first Schengen visa.
4. Fix the dates with your employer's letter, which the German list wants to state the purpose and length of the stay.^[2]
5. Order the round-trip reservation a few days before the TLScontact appointment, names in the Latin spelling shown in the passport.
6. Look it up on the airline's site and keep a copy of the screen.
7. Buy the real ticket after approval, and carry copies of your file when you fly.

Take an example. Suppose you are an engineer in Alexandria with a TLScontact Cairo appointment on 3 November, planning to visit Munich from 20 December to 4 January. We would order the reservation around 31 October for those dates, check it that evening, and buy the actual Cairo to Munich fare only once the visa is granted. This is a made-up illustration, not a client's case.

Where do Egyptian applications usually go wrong?

• Name spelling. Arabic names can be transliterated several ways; copy the Latin spelling from the passport, not from an old ticket or ID card.
• One-way reservation when the German factsheet asks for round-trip.^[2]
• No Mogama certificate for a first application.^[2]
• Untranslated Arabic documents.
• Applying too late, less than 4 weeks before travel.
• Using an agent's "ticket" with no working PNR. The embassy itself warns about misleading third parties.
