For a Moroccan passport, Europe is next door yet still needs a visa, and that tension shapes almost every trip. The good news is that Schengen consulates in Morocco publish detailed document lists, often in French, and most of them are relaxed about flights at the application stage. The less obvious part is that their wording differs from one mission to the next. Spain wants a return booking; Germany does not list one; France we could not confirm this month. Below you will find each mission's own wording, a way to handle flights without wasting dirhams, and the moments when buying the real fare makes more sense.

Why do Moroccan applicants rarely need a paid ticket?
Because the visa officer is assessing a plan, and consulates know refusals happen. Paying in full for a Casablanca to Madrid return before you have a decision puts your money at risk for no gain on the application. The EU's Visa Code, which every Schengen consulate applies, lists a reservation as acceptable evidence of the intended journey.[3]
The ticket you have actually paid for matters after the visa is issued. Border police in Spain or France can ask to see proof of your stay and return, and the Spanish checklist itself reminds travellers that a visa does not give an automatic right of entry.[1] So buy the real fare once you have the visa, and keep it with your hotel and insurance papers.
What about leaving Morocco? We did not find an official Moroccan rule requiring a return ticket from departing citizens, so for tourists the practical check is the airline's: it will want to see that you hold the visa your destination requires.

Spain: the Rabat consulate's list
Spain's consulate general in Rabat publishes a five-page French checklist for tourism, family visits and business. Under "proof of the means of transport" it asks for a booking of a round-trip ticket by plane, bus or boat, as the case may be.[1] The word is "réservation". A held flight reservation fits it.
The same document is precise on the rest. Book the appointment through BLS online and prepay the BLS service fee at that moment. Lodge the file inside the window that opens six months out and shuts a fortnight before departure. The visa fee is EUR 80, paid in dirhams as 881 DH, with EUR 40 for children aged 6 to 12. Processing takes 15 days but can be extended to 30 or 60. Bring originals with a photocopy of each, and Spanish translations for documents not in French. Travel insurance must cover at least EUR 30,000 across the whole Schengen area.[1]
Two smaller rules surprise people. The passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after the visa ends and must have been issued within the previous 10 years. And once the visa is granted, you have one month to collect it, otherwise the consulate treats the application as abandoned.[1]

What else does Spain want alongside the flight booking?
The flight item sits next to accommodation and money, and the Spanish list gives several ways to cover accommodation. You can show hotel reservations, proof that you rent or own property in Spain, a confirmation from a private host saying they will cover your costs, a confirmation from an inviting company, or proof of enough money to pay for accommodation yourself.[1] Whichever you choose, the dates must line up with the return booking. A reservation from 22 December to 2 January sitting next to a hotel booked from 23 December looks careless, and careless files attract questions.
Minors need more. The checklist asks for a consent letter from both parents, or from the guardian, naming the dates of the stay and the adult who will accompany the child, and it warns that Spanish border officers may ask to see a similar letter on arrival.[1] If you are booking a family reservation, make sure every child's name matches the passport too.
Germany: no flight item on the Rabat list
The German Embassy's instructions for a tourist Schengen visa in Morocco ask for the form, passport, a biometric photo, a written explanation of the purpose if it is not obvious, travel health insurance of at least EUR 30,000, and proof of how the trip is funded. For personal funding, it suggests an employment certificate, proof of income, three months of bank statements, a CNSS certificate, tax receipts or a pension certificate, plus papers on your family situation in Morocco.[2] We did not see a flight reservation in that list.
So should you include one? Our view: a reservation can make your dates easy to follow, and nothing on the page forbids it, but do not panic if you do not have one. The embassy notes that applicants may add further documents and that its external provider must accept them. It also states that the Visa Code sets a processing time of 15 working days.[2]
France and the other Schengen states
We could not open the current French checklist for Morocco on an official page this month, so we will not quote it. Use the list France-Visas generates for your profile. UK, US and Canada
GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide puts flight bookings among the documents that help little in a visit application, apart from transit, so we would not lean on one there.[5] For the US, the State Department's guidance is to avoid buying tickets until your visa is issued; a reservation is purely a reference for the interview in Casablanca.[6] IRCC lets Canadian visitor applicants show their trip through an itinerary that can include flights.[7]
Where can Moroccans travel without a visa, and what do they show?
- Türkiye. The Turkish foreign ministry lists Moroccan ordinary passports as visa-exempt for travel up to 90 days, within the general rule of 90 days in any 180.[8] Buy your return ticket; no reservation is needed for a visa that does not exist.
- Thailand. Morocco is not one of the 60 countries on Thailand's 30-day exemption list from 15 September 2026.[9] Check the Thai embassy in Rabat for the visa you need, and see our Thailand visa guide.

How do you assemble the flight section of a Moroccan file?
- Download the checklist for your consulate and purpose; Spain's is a PDF in French on the consulate site.
- Book the appointment with BLS or TLScontact first, since slots set your timetable.
- Choose dates that match your congé letter, hotel bookings and insurance.
- Copy names from the passport's Latin line. Moroccan names often have several transliterations; use exactly the passport's.
- Order a round-trip reservation two or three days before the appointment.
- Open it on the airline's website using the booking code and surname, and print that screen.
- Collect the visa within the deadline, then buy the ticket you will fly on.
An example to make this concrete: imagine a teacher in Fès with a BLS appointment in Rabat on 18 November and a family holiday in Seville from 22 December to 2 January. We would order the reservation around 15 November for those dates, check it the same day, then buy the Fès or Casablanca to Seville fare after the visa is collected. This is a hypothetical, not a real client.
What mistakes do Moroccan applicants make with flights?
- Different spellings of the same name across passport, CIN, reservation and insurance.
- A one-way reservation when Spain asks for aller-retour.[1]
- Paying for a fare you cannot cancel while the decision is pending, then losing the money after a refusal.
- Booking the reservation weeks ahead so it has lapsed by the time the file is read.
- Forgetting to collect the Spanish visa within one month.[1]
- Accepting a "ticket" from an intermediary that does not open on the airline site.

Does the Spanish consulate in Rabat need a paid flight ticket?
No. Its checklist asks for a booking of a round-trip ticket by plane, bus or boat, depending on how you travel, and the French word used is "réservation". A genuine flight reservation in your name for the planned dates fits that wording. The consulate still decides and can ask for more documents or an interview.
Does Germany want a flight reservation from Moroccan applicants?
The German Embassy's tourist instructions for Morocco do not list one. They focus on insurance, proof of funding such as bank statements and a CNSS certificate, and your family situation. Not for short trips. Türkiye's foreign ministry says Moroccan ordinary passport holders are exempt for travel up to 90 days, within 90 days in any 180-day period. Because there is no visa application, a reservation serves no purpose; just buy the return ticket you plan to use.
Can I use a ferry booking instead of a flight for Spain?
The Rabat checklist accepts a round-trip booking by boat or bus as well as by plane. We only provide flight reservations, so for a crossing from Tanger Med you would book with the ferry company. Make sure the dates match your insurance and accommodation.
What does it cost from Morocco, and how do I pay?
