Cairo is home to more than Egyptians. Sudanese families, Syrians, Yemenis, Libyans and Iraqis, plus students and foreign staff from across Asia and Africa, all file visa applications from here. The embassies and the private visa centres they use set different rules for each of those groups, and the flight item is only one line among many. This page sets out who handles a Cairo resident's application, quotes what each one says about flights, and explains how to order a reservation that matches. We are an online business with no office in Cairo or Giza; everything happens through our website.

What does the German Embassy in Cairo ask for on flights?
A reservation that exists and is valid. Its tourism and visit factsheet, dated August 2025, asks every applicant to attach "an existing, valid flight reservation" covering the round trip.[1] The words "existing" and "valid" are doing real work there. A PDF whose booking has expired or cannot be found on the airline's site does not meet them, which is the main reason we tell people to check the PNR the evening before.
The factsheet sets out the process in order. You register and book with TLScontact, fill in VIDEX online, then attend in person to submit the file and give fingerprints. If you gave fingerprints to a Schengen mission in Egypt within the last four years, you won't need to repeat them.[1] Arabic documents need a recognised German or English translation, and the passport stays with the embassy until a decision.[1]
Money matters too. The visa fee is EUR 90, paid in Egyptian pounds; children aged 6 to 12 pay EUR 45 and under-sixes pay nothing. TLS keeps its service fee if you miss the slot or arrive with gaps, and you can cancel up to three days before the appointment.[1] The German embassy only takes the file if Germany is your main destination.[1]
Do Cairo residents need a travel history certificate?
Possibly, and it surprises people. Germany's factsheet sets a condition for first-timers: residents of Egypt aged over 16 with no previous Schengen visa must bring a Mogama record of their entries and exits, translated into English or German.[1] Copies of past visas for Schengen, America, Britain or Canada exempt you. Lost your passport? Then the factsheet wants seven years of movements and a translated police report.[1]
Why does this matter for flights? Because getting the certificate takes time, and people often order a reservation first and then discover the Mogama step. Get the certificate, then book the TLS slot, then order the reservation. In that order, nothing expires while you wait.
Visiting relatives in Germany: what else does Cairo's factsheet want?
Proof of the host and proof of your roots at home, alongside the flight. For a family visit, the factsheet offers two routes. Either your host obtains a formal letter of commitment, which you submit in original plus one copy and which must be no older than six months, or the host signs an informal letter of invitation giving a full address, phone and email. In both cases you add copies of the host's passport and German residence permit.[1]
The "roots" section is where Cairo files are won or lost. The embassy asks for an extract from the Egyptian family register, translated, and for visits to children or relatives in Germany, proof of the relationship such as a birth or marriage certificate.[1] Employees add an employer's letter giving position, length of service, salary, social insurance number and the company's contact details, plus six months of stamped personal bank statements where available. Self-employed applicants add the commercial register, tax card and six months of company statements.[1]
Against all that, the flight reservation is a small item. It still has to agree with everything else, though. If the invitation says your son expects you from 2 March to 20 March, the reservation should show exactly those dates, and so should the insurance.
How does the Dutch VFS centre in Cairo treat flights?
It says outright that a purchase is unnecessary. Netherlands Worldwide sends Cairo applicants to the VFS Global centre in Cairo and accepts applications there from people living in Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Yemen.[2] Its tourist checklist wants a booking, in the traveller's name, for getting into and out of Schengen, and states that buying the ticket is unnecessary.[3]
That regional reach is unusual. A Libyan resident of Benghazi could, in principle, apply in Cairo rather than travelling further afield. But the same checklist asks every applicant for proof of legal residence where they apply, and lists a residence permit valid for at least 3 months after leaving Schengen as one way to show it.[3] If you live in Cairo and are not Egyptian, your Egyptian residence permit is that document.
What if you are Sudanese, Syrian or another foreign resident in Cairo?
Then your residence status sits at the centre of the file. Schengen consulates assume you lodge the file in the country where you hold residence, and the Netherlands asks for reasons from anyone who doesn't.[3] For a Sudanese family in Nasr City with Egyptian residence cards, Cairo is the right place. For someone on a short tourist stamp, it may not be.
Three practical points for foreign residents:
- Check the permit expiry first. The Dutch line of three months beyond your Schengen exit is a sensible minimum to aim for, even where a mission does not spell it out.[3]
- Route the return to Cairo. The reservation should bring you back to CAI, because Cairo is where your ties are being judged.
- Translate everything Arabic. Germany requires recognised translations into German or English.[1]
For US visas there is a further check. Cairo's US Embassy points out that Presidential Proclamation 10998 has, since 1 January 2026, restricted visas for citizens of 39 countries.[5] If your passport is on that list, living in Cairo does not change it.
What about UK and US visas from Cairo?
United Kingdom. The Home Office's own guide for visitors treats flight bookings as something you don't need to submit, except when you are transiting.[4] We'd leave the flight out and spend the effort on salary slips, bank statements and family ties. More in our UK visa guide.
United States. The embassy asks nonimmigrant applicants to book interviews in their country of residence or nationality, and many categories must set social media accounts to public before the interview.[5] As for flights, the State Department suggests you buy nothing until the visa has been approved.[6] A reservation is optional; bring one only if it helps you state your dates confidently.

How do the main destinations compare for Cairo applicants?
| Destination | Where you apply from Cairo | Flight wording | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | TLScontact, then the German Embassy[1] | Existing, valid round-trip reservation[1] | Held reservation, checked the night before |
| Netherlands | VFS Global Cairo[2] | Booking under your name suffices; no purchase[3] | Held reservation |
| Other Schengen states | That state's own provider | The Visa Code lets a reservation serve as proof[7] | Read the state's list |
| United Kingdom | Online form plus biometrics | Bookings unnecessary for non-transit visitors[4] | Usually leave out |
| United States | US Embassy Cairo[5] | Wait for the visa before buying[6] | Optional |
Which routes from Cairo look natural on a reservation?
Routes that start at CAI and go where you really intend to go. Most international trips from the capital begin at Cairo International Airport (CAI), EgyptAir's base.[8] For a European trip, a nonstop EgyptAir sector to your main destination is the plainest choice; our EgyptAir guide shows what its PNRs look like and where to look them up.
Gulf connections are also normal. Emirates lists Dubai to Cairo among its most popular routes, and plenty of Cairo residents fly to Europe or Asia through Dubai.[9] If your trip includes a connection in a third country, check whether your passport needs a transit visa there; that is easy to overlook for Sudanese and Syrian travellers.
Living in Alexandria or the Delta but applying in Cairo? A reservation from Cairo is fine if that is where you would fly from. If you would really leave from Borg El Arab, use that instead and keep it consistent everywhere.

Example: a Heliopolis teacher's first Schengen trip
Take Mona, a secondary-school teacher in Heliopolis who has never held a Schengen visa. She wants ten days in Berlin and Dresden over the mid-year break, starting 25 January. Germany is her only destination, so the German Embassy is responsible.[1]
She is a first-time applicant living in Egypt, so she starts at the Mogama and has the movements record translated.[1] She then books TLS for 10 December, about six and a half weeks before departure, comfortably inside the four-week cut-off. Her school writes an employment letter with the details the factsheet lists, including salary and social insurance number.[1]
We'd suggest ordering the reservation on 7 or 8 December: Cairo to Berlin on 25 January, back on 4 February. The hotel bookings carry booking numbers, as the factsheet prefers, and the insurance covers the same dates with at least EUR 30,000 of cover.[1] Nothing in the file claims she has bought a ticket. Once the visa is issued, she buys one.
How do Cairo's deadlines fit a reservation's lifespan?
Carefully. Germany wants applications at least four weeks before travel and takes about two to four weeks to decide.[1] Our holds, on the other hand, run for two weeks at the very most, with the carrier choosing the cut-off. So the sensible pattern is: travel dates at least four weeks out, reservation ordered two or three days before the appointment. If the embassy later asks for current flight details, order a new reservation then rather than stretching the old one.
How do you order from Cairo?
- Confirm the mission and download its current checklist or factsheet.
- Sort out any Mogama certificate or translations before booking anything else.
- Enter route and dates on our booking page, normally from CAI and back to CAI.
- Spell names exactly as in the passport, Latin-script version, for each traveller.
- Pay $9 per passenger online; return trips cost the same as one way.
- Retrieve the booking on the airline's site when it arrives, using these steps.
Order status is on the tracking page. For accommodation, see our hotel reservations; for currencies other than dollars, the price page.
Which mistakes cost Cairo applicants the most?
- Applying inside the four-week cut-off for Germany and hoping it will be accepted.
- Forgetting the Mogama certificate on a first application.
- Untranslated Arabic papers. Germany wants recognised translations.
- A reservation that has lapsed by the appointment day, which fails the "existing, valid" test.
- Trusting paid intermediaries. The German factsheet itself warns that third parties give false information.[1]
Cairo FAQ
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Cairo?
No. We operate online only and have no counter in Cairo, Giza or Alexandria. You complete the form on our website, pay $9 per passenger, and the reservation reaches your inbox, normally within about 10 minutes. Print it yourself. If something looks wrong, contact us on WhatsApp or email rather than editing the file.
Will Germany's Cairo embassy take a held booking rather than a bought fare?
Its factsheet asks for "an existing, valid flight reservation" for a round trip, not a purchased ticket. That is a reservation by definition. The embassy still makes the decision and may ask for more documents. What it will not accept is a booking that cannot be found or has already expired.
I am Sudanese and live in Cairo. Can I apply for a Dutch visa there?
Netherlands Worldwide lists Sudan among the places whose residents can apply at the VFS centre in Cairo, alongside Egypt, Iraq, Libya and Yemen. You will need to show legal residence, and its checklist accepts, for example, a residence card that remains valid three months past your Schengen departure. A paid flight ticket is not needed.
What is the earliest and latest date to lodge a German application in Cairo?
Up to six months before travel, and no later than four weeks before, according to the embassy's factsheet. Processing takes roughly two to four weeks and can be longer. Because a reservation lasts up to two weeks at most, order it close to the appointment rather than when you first plan the trip.
Must a Cairo applicant send flights with a British visitor visa?
Usually not. GOV.UK's guide to visitor documents says flight bookings are not needed unless you are transiting. Most Cairo applicants are better off proving income, savings, employment and family ties. Put your intended dates in the online form and keep any later ticket consistent with them.
Can I fly from Cairo with the reservation?
No. A genuine PNR reserves the seat, but since nobody has paid, EgyptAir and other carriers will refuse it at check-in. With the visa in your passport, pay for a fare that falls inside its dates. Many people book the same route they reserved, but you can choose another.
How long does the reservation remain valid?
A fortnight is the ceiling; the carrier picks the actual limit, and certain fares lapse sooner. That is why we prefer orders placed two or three days before the TLS or VFS appointment. If your appointment is moved, order a new reservation nearer the new date.
Order your Cairo reservation

A word of caution: no flight paper gets anyone a visa. Call it a reservation, make it match your other papers, and leave the verdict to the embassy.
