Türkiye gives Indian travellers two quite different routes, and the flight rules differ between them. If you already hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, you can usually get a one-month e-Visa online. Everyone else applies for a sticker visa through the visa application centre. This guide sets out what the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its missions say for each route, quotes the flight wording exactly, and tells you plainly where a held reservation is enough and where you should hold a real ticket.
Turkey visa for Indians: key facts
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Do ordinary Indian passport holders need a visa? | Yes. Diplomatic passports are exempt for up to 90 days; ordinary, special and service passports need a visa.[1] |
| Is there an e-Visa for Indians? | Only a conditional one: a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month, for holders of a valid Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit who meet certain conditions.[1] |
| What are the e-Visa conditions? | A return ticket, hotel reservation and at least USD 50 per day of stay; tourism or business only; entry by air only.[3] |
| Sticker visa flight wording (India) | "Confirmed reservation of round trip flight ticket".[4] |
| Where do you submit a sticker visa in India? | Through the intermediary visa application centre, Gateway Management, according to the mission's jurisdiction.[4] |
| Processing time (India) | Minimum 4 working days for tourist and business visas, with 2 to 4 more days outside the Delhi centre.[4] |
Who needs a visa for Turkey?
Indian citizens on an ordinary passport do. The Turkish MFA's country list says so in one line, and adds that holders of a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit "may get their single entry e-Visas valid for one month" via the official e-Visa website, "provided that they meet certain conditions".[1]
Rules differ widely for other passports. To give two examples from the same MFA list: Singapore passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 90 days, and Vietnamese ordinary passport holders can get a single-entry e-Visa for stays of up to 30 days.[1] If you are not Indian, find your own nationality on that page first. The rest of this guide assumes an Indian passport.
Route 1: the conditional e-Visa
This is the quicker route if you qualify. The Turkish Consulate General in Los Angeles summarises the conditions for nationals who can only get a conditional e-Visa. You need:[3]
- a valid visa or valid residence permit from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland;
- proof that you hold "a return ticket, hotel reservation and at least 50 USD per each day" of your stay;
- a purpose of tourism or business;
- entry through an airport. The e-Visa does not apply at land border crossings.
The same note adds that immigration officers recognise only valid sticker US, Schengen or Irish visas or Green Cards as the supporting document, not other papers proving US residence.[3] In practice: carry the passport containing that supporting visa, and make sure it is still valid on the day you land.
We could not load the e-Visa portal's own condition pages directly in October 2026; the site refused automated access. The conditions above come from the MFA and the Los Angeles consulate, and the portal itself is linked in the sources. You will see the conditions again during the online application.
What this means for flights: the e-Visa wording is "return ticket", and it is checked when you arrive. A held reservation is not a ticket. Since the e-Visa decision is quick, our honest advice is to buy your actual return flight (a refundable fare if you're unsure) before you travel on a conditional e-Visa.
Route 2: the sticker visa through the visa centre
If you don't hold one of those supporting visas or permits, you apply for a sticker visa. The Turkish missions in India publish a document list for tourist visas, under the heading "How to Apply Sticker Visa & General Information on Travel to Türkiye". The version we read is marked as updated in January 2022, so treat it as the official baseline and confirm the current list at the centre.[4] In summary, it asks for:
- a visa application form, filled in by hand in capitals, signed, with one photo attached;
- your original passport, issued within the last 10 years, valid at least six months beyond the stay, with two blank pages;
- two biometric photos, white background, taken within six months, 2.5 x 2.5 inches;
- a leave letter from your employer, or a letter on your business letterhead if self-employed;
- travel insurance covering at least the duration of the trip in Türkiye;
- "Confirmed reservation of round trip flight ticket";
- a hotel reservation;
- the last three months' bank statements, personal or company, original or attested by the bank;
- salary slips and Form 16, or business tax documents if self-employed;
- where relevant: a sponsor letter, consent letters for minors, an invitation letter, a marriage certificate, or a power of attorney if someone else submits for you;
- copies of the first and last pages of your passport, and optionally a tour itinerary.
Submission and collection go through the intermediary visa centre, Gateway Management, depending on which mission covers your area. The page gives a minimum of 4 working days for Indian tourist and business visas, with 2 to 4 days more outside Delhi, and warns that peak season can add time.[4] The MFA site also mentions a pre-application system for sticker visas, so expect to fill in an online form before your appointment.[1]

What does "confirmed reservation of round trip flight ticket" mean?
This is the phrase people ask us about most for Turkey, so let's be careful with it. Read literally, the checklist asks for a reservation, and asks that it be confirmed and round trip. It does not say "paid", "issued" or "e-ticket".
A held booking is a real reservation sitting in the airline's system, with a booking reference anyone can look up while the hold lasts. That is why many applicants use one at this stage. But "confirmed" is the kind of word that different people read differently. If an officer reads it as "ticketed", a held reservation may not satisfy them, and the visa centre staff can only pass on the mission's view, not change it.
Our practical advice: if the centre or mission tells you they want a paid ticket, follow that and buy a refundable fare. If they accept a reservation, make sure it shows both directions, your names exactly as in the passports, and dates that match your hotel booking, insurance and leave letter. Either way, describe it accurately as a reservation.
e-Visa versus sticker visa: the flight rules compared
| Conditional e-Visa | Sticker visa (India) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Indian passport + valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit[1] | Anyone needing a visa, including those without a supporting visa[4] |
| Validity | Single entry, one month[1] | As issued by the mission |
| Official flight wording | "a return ticket"[3] | "Confirmed reservation of round trip flight ticket"[4] |
| When it is checked | Mainly on arrival, along with hotel and funds | When you submit the file at the visa centre |
| Other money proof | At least USD 50 per day of stay[3] | Three months of bank statements, salary slips, Form 16[4] |
| Does a held reservation fit? | Not on its own at arrival; buy the real return ticket | Often used at submission; ask the centre if you are unsure what "confirmed" means to them |
Will Turkish immigration check your return ticket?
For e-Visa holders the conditions are explicit: you must be able to prove a return ticket, a hotel reservation and the daily funds.[3] Expect them to be checked, and expect the airline in India or the Gulf to look at them too before boarding.
For sticker visa holders, the mission has already seen your travel plan. We found no separate official statement of a ticket check at the border for that group, so we won't invent one. Still, a visitor flying in with no way home is never in a strong position, and airlines apply their own document checks. Once the visa is in your passport, book the real flights for the dates it allows.
When a reservation is the right choice for Turkey, and when it isn't
A good fit: the sticker visa file. Say your Gateway appointment in Mumbai is on 10 November and you plan to fly to Istanbul on 2 December. A round-trip reservation booked on 8 or 9 November shows the plan clearly without committing money to fares before the decision. Book it close to the appointment, not three weeks earlier, so it is still live when the file is looked at.
A good fit as well: a multi-country trip where Türkiye is one leg and another embassy wants to see the full route. Our Schengen visa guide explains how to show linked legs.
Not a good fit: flying in on a conditional e-Visa with only a reservation. The condition says return ticket. Buy one.
Not a good fit either: any situation where the visa centre or mission has told you it wants an issued ticket. Their instruction beats any general advice, including ours.
Avoid: editing an old e-ticket, using a made-up booking reference, or calling a reservation a "ticket" on your form. A reservation is honest evidence of a plan; anything dressed up as more than that can damage this application and the next one.
Preparing a Turkey tourist visa file: the order we'd follow
- Check your route. Holding a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit? You may qualify for the e-Visa. If not, it's the sticker visa.[1]
- Check your passport: under 10 years old, six months beyond your stay, two blank pages.[4]
- Fix your dates and book a hotel you can cancel.
- Arrange insurance covering the whole stay in Türkiye.
- Sticker route: gather the bank, salary and tax papers, then book a round-trip reservation a day or two before the appointment.
- e-Visa route: apply on the official portal only, then buy your actual return ticket.
- Before flying: carry your return ticket, hotel confirmation and, for e-Visa holders, the supporting visa and enough money for each day.
Getting a round-trip reservation for the Turkey visa centre
Our reservations are held bookings with a real PNR in your name. You can look them up on the airline's "Manage booking" page with the reference and surname. A reservation is not a paid ticket and cannot be used for boarding.
That price covers one passenger, one way or return; multi-city routes are charged per pair of legs. Payment is by UPI, cards or netbanking via Razorpay, delivery is by email in roughly 10 minutes, and the order tracker shows progress. We show the hold window on the booking form before you pay, so match it to your appointment. See the price page for details, and use our checklist on verifying a reservation before submission.
Sticker visa appointment coming up?
Round-trip reservation with a PNR you can check yourself. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Turkey visa and flight ticket FAQ
Can Indians get a Turkey e-Visa?
Only conditionally. The Turkish MFA says Indian ordinary passport holders with a valid Schengen, USA, UK or Ireland visa or residence permit may get a single-entry e-Visa valid for one month, if they meet certain conditions. Those conditions include a return ticket, a hotel reservation, at least USD 50 per day, a tourism or business purpose, and arrival by air.
Is a dummy ticket accepted for a Turkey sticker visa?
The Indian checklist asks for a "confirmed reservation of round trip flight ticket", which is reservation wording, and many applicants submit a held booking with a live PNR. Acceptance is the mission's decision. If the visa centre tells you it wants a paid ticket, follow that instruction and choose a refundable fare instead.
Do I need a return ticket to enter Turkey on an e-Visa?
Yes. The conditional e-Visa requires you to prove a return ticket, a hotel reservation and at least USD 50 for each day of your stay. These can be checked when you land and often at airline check-in. Buy the actual return flight before you travel rather than relying on a reservation made for an earlier application.
How long does a Turkey visa take from India?
The Turkish missions' page gives a minimum of 4 working days for Indian tourist and business visas submitted in India, with 2 to 4 extra days at centres outside Delhi. It also warns that peak seasons can add about five more days. Apply early, and avoid buying non-refundable flights before your visa is issued.
Who handles Turkey visa applications in India?
According to the Turkish missions' sticker visa page, submission and collection go through the intermediary visa application centre, Gateway Management, depending on which mission covers your area. Check the centre's current checklist on the day you book, since the version we quote is marked as updated in January 2022.
Does my US or UK e-visa count for the Turkey e-Visa?
Be careful. The Turkish consulate in Los Angeles notes that officers recognise valid sticker US, Schengen or Irish visas or Green Cards, and not other documents proving US residence. If your supporting permission is digital only, confirm it qualifies on the official e-Visa portal or with a Turkish mission before relying on it.
Should my hotel and flight dates match?
Yes. Your round-trip reservation, hotel booking, insurance and leave letter should all cover the same days. A gap or overlap invites questions about where you will stay or when you will really leave. Book the reservation last, once the hotel dates are fixed, and check every name against the passport.
