A "dummy ticket" for a Schengen visa is simply a flight reservation: a real booking held in the airline's system under a booking reference (PNR), issued in your name, but not paid for and not ticketed. You cannot board a plane with it. Its only job is to show the consulate when you plan to enter and leave the Schengen area. This guide sets out what the EU rules say, what individual consulates actually write on their checklists (the wording does vary), and how to make sure your reservation supports, rather than weakens, your file. Every rule below links to an official source, listed in full at the end.

Do you need a flight reservation or a paid ticket?
In the large majority of cases, a reservation is what is asked for. The Visa Code itself puts "reservation" first, and several missions go further and tell applicants not to buy a ticket before the decision. But consulates write their own checklists, and the wording is not uniform. Here is what the official lists actually say (paraphrased or quoted from the documents, last checked October 2026):
- Netherlands (all countries): you need "a reservation in your name" for travel to and from the Schengen area, or another document showing your travel plans, and "you do not need a paid travel ticket".[9] The Dutch VFS checklist for India adds: make travel reservations you can cancel, in case the visa is refused.[11]
- Germany (India): the tourism checklist lists "Flight reservation" alongside proof of intended means of transport and itinerary, and notes that a booked flight ticket "does not result in a preferred processing" of the application.[4][6]
- Germany (Tanzania): the Embassy in Dar es Salaam asks for a flight itinerary and states "NO flight booking". A useful reminder that some missions want only a planned route, not even a reservation.[7]
- Spain (Mumbai): "Flight bookings (roundtrip)" plus internal travel reservations, and: "It is advisable not to buy the air ticket until the visa has been granted."[14]
- Italy (Mumbai): "Return flight details or airlines reservation printout", plus proof of internal travel within Schengen (trains, car hire).[13]
- Malta (VFS India): "Flight reservations of return or round ticket", plus intra-Schengen flight, train or car-hire proof if visiting several states.[20]
- Portugal (Goa): a "Roundtrip flight reservation with the name of the traveller" showing departure and return dates; a booked ticket does not speed up processing.[16]
- Greece (Kuwait): asks for a "confirmed return airline/flight ticket with booking reference". Stricter wording like this exists, so read your own centre's list rather than assuming.[22]
Our advice: do not buy a non-refundable ticket before your visa is decided. If your mission's checklist asks for a reservation, an itinerary or "return flight details", a verifiable reservation meets that request. If your checklist explicitly demands a paid, issued ticket, follow the checklist: buy a refundable fare or ask the mission what it accepts.
Whatever you submit, describe it accurately. In your cover letter and application form call it a "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary", never a "ticket". A reservation is honest evidence of a plan; presenting it as a paid ticket is not.

Applying for Germany
Germany is one of the most common Schengen applications from India and the Gulf. In India, you can hand in your application at any VFS Global centre; files are forwarded to the Consulate General in Mumbai for a decision.[5] The tourism checklist asks for a covering letter with your intended means of transport and itinerary, a detailed travel plan, proof of accommodation, and a "Flight reservation". It also says plainly that a booked flight ticket does not lead to faster processing, so there is no advantage in paying for a fare early.[4][6] Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least three months after your planned return.[4] From the UAE, applications also go through VFS Global and the reservation is again listed simply as "flight reservation".[8] More detail: Germany visa from Delhi and Germany visa from Dubai.
Applying for France
For France, you fill in the application on the official France-Visas website, which then produces the list of documents for your situation. In India, files are taken in by VFS Global centres and examined by the French consulates in Mumbai, Puducherry, Kolkata and Bengaluru and the Embassy in New Delhi.[12] If France is your main destination, a return reservation into and out of the Schengen area (it need not be a French airport) that matches your hotel bookings and insurance is the safest base. Which country should you apply to?
Under Article 5 of the Visa Code, the competent consulate is that of the country which is your main destination, meaning where you will spend the most time, or the purpose of the trip if that is different. If two or more countries are equal, apply to the country whose external border you will cross first.[1][3]
Your reservation should make that choice obvious. Example: 6 nights in Paris, 3 in Zurich, 5 in Munich. France is the main destination, so you apply to France. The file should show a flight into Paris, a train or flight Paris to Zurich, Zurich to Munich, and a flight home from Munich. Several checklists ask for this explicitly: Italy, Malta, Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands all request proof of intra-Schengen flights, trains or car hire for multi-country trips.[11][13][15][16][20] A multi-city reservation that shows each leg is often cleaner than three separate documents. Avoid this: applying to the country with the easiest appointment slot when your reservation and hotels show most nights elsewhere. A mismatch between the consulate and your itinerary is one of the easiest problems for an officer to spot.
What your Schengen flight reservation must show
- Every traveller's name exactly as in the passport, including middle names if they are in the passport. Switzerland asks for the names of all travellers on the reservation.[15]
- Entry into and exit from the Schengen area, on dates that match the "intended date of arrival" and "departure" fields of your application form.
- Dates consistent with every other document: hotel bookings for each night, travel insurance covering the whole stay (minimum €30,000 cover is standard on the checklists above), leave letter from your employer and your cover letter.
- A trip length within the 90/180-day rule, counting any days already spent in Schengen in the previous 180 days.
- Intra-Schengen legs if you visit more than one country.
- A booking reference (PNR) and airline so the booking can be looked up.
How officers may check a reservation
Consulates do not publish how they verify flight documents, and practice varies. What is certain is that a reservation with a real PNR can be looked up on the airline's "Manage booking" page with the booking reference and surname, so an officer, or the provider's staff, can check that it exists and matches your name and dates. A PDF produced by a "free ticket generator" with an invented PNR fails that check and can be treated as a false document. That is a refusal ground under Article 32 of the Visa Code and can affect future applications.[3]
A held reservation is temporary by nature, and the Dutch VFS checklist explicitly asks applicants to make reservations they can cancel.[11] What matters is that it is genuine and current when you submit. Travel-document problems that lead to refusals
Article 32 of the Visa Code lists the grounds for refusal, including failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the stay, doubts about the applicant's intention to leave before the visa expires, and documents that are false or forged.[3] In practice, the flight-related versions of those problems are:
- Dates that don't match the application form, hotel, insurance or leave letter.
- Applying to the wrong consulate for the itinerary shown.
- No exit from Schengen, or a one-way reservation with no onward plan.
- Name spelt differently from the passport, or a missing family member.
- A PNR that does not exist, or an edited or fabricated PDF.
- A stay longer than the 90/180 allowance left to you.
- Missing intra-Schengen legs on a multi-country trip.
When to book your reservation
Book the reservation close to your appointment, usually a day or two before, so it is current on the day you submit. A held reservation does not last indefinitely; the hold window for your booking is shown on our booking form before you pay. Choose flight dates that sit within your intended trip, remembering that you can apply no later than 15 days and no earlier than 6 months before you travel.[1] If your visa is granted for different dates than you asked for, plan the real trip around the visa's validity and buy your actual ticket then. Netherlands Worldwide tells applicants to contact the embassy if the visa validity does not match the dates of the tickets in the application.[10]
Applying from India
Schengen applications in India go through external providers, not straight to the embassy counter:
- Germany: any VFS Global centre in India; decisions by the Consulate General in Mumbai.[5]
- Netherlands: VFS Global in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune or New Delhi.[10]
- France: VFS Global centres in 14 Indian cities.[12]
- Spain: BLS International.[14]
- Greece: GVCW centres.[21]
- Czechia: VFS Global; the Czech Embassy publishes the centre list.[19]
Book the appointment yourself on the provider's site. Netherlands Worldwide specifically advises against paying an intermediary for appointments.[10] Indian checklists are detailed about money (bank statements, ITRs, salary slips) and insurance from approved insurers, so the reservation is one part of a larger file. Applying from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman or Kuwait
Residents of the Gulf usually apply in their country of residence, and the key extra requirement is a residence permit with enough validity left. The rule is not the same everywhere:
- Germany (UAE): the UAE residence permit must be valid at least three months beyond the end of the requested visa or the trip.[8]
- Czechia (Kuwait): the Kuwaiti residence permit should be valid at least 3 months beyond departure from Schengen; the embassy also asks for proof you can continue to your next country, such as a "confirmed itinerary/airline reservation or airline ticket".[23]
- Greece (Kuwait): the VFS checklist asks for a residence permit valid for 6 months from the Schengen exit date.[22]
- Italy (Abu Dhabi): only residents of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi apply at the embassy there, by appointment through BLS International.[24]

How to get a verifiable Schengen flight reservation, and what it costs
