Portugal's checklists are some of the most candid we have read. Right at the top, above the list of papers, the Portuguese missions in India say that paying for a ticket buys you no priority. That single line answers the question most applicants come to us with. The harder parts of a Portugal file lie elsewhere: picking the right jurisdiction, getting the insurance declaration right, and making a Lisbon-and-Porto trip look as coherent on paper as it does in your head. We cover the flight wording first and then everything around it. The rules every Schengen country shares are in our Schengen visa flight reservation guide.

Who needs a visa for Portugal?
If you travel on an Indian passport, you do, even for a four-day Lisbon break. The EU keeps two lists in Regulation (EU) 2018/1806: Annex I names the nationalities that must hold a visa, and Annex II the ones that may visit for short stays without one.[10] India is on the visa list. If your passport is from a visa-free country, this guide's paperwork does not apply to a short holiday, although proof of your way home is still worth carrying. Long stays, such as Portugal's work or digital nomad routes, need a national (D) visa with its own checklist; our digital nomad visa guide covers the travel side of that.
What exactly do the Portuguese checklists say about flights?
They ask for a reservation and go out of their way to say a paid ticket is no advantage. These are the lines, word for word:
- Consulate General of Portugal, Goa (checklist dated August 2025): under "Transport document/flight reservation", a "Roundtrip flight reservation with the name of the traveller showing the date of departure and the date of return." For trips covering several Schengen states it adds "proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train or bus itinerary or car reservation."[3]
- Same checklist, opening note and general remarks: "A booked flight ticket does not result in preferred processing of the application." The line appears twice.[3]
- Embassy of Portugal, New Delhi (tourism checklist): the same roundtrip reservation wording, with "train itinerary or car rental" for travel between Schengen states, and the same note on booked tickets.[4]
- Portugal's checklist via VFS in the United States (November 2025): "Flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations or other proof of intended transport and full itinerary".[7]
What this means for you: Portugal has written down what most consulates only imply. You need a round trip, your own name on it, and two clear dates. There is no extra credit for locking money into a non-refundable fare before you know the decision. Should some other Portuguese post demand a "confirmed" or paid ticket, take that literally: a hold might fall short there, so do what that post says.
One more line is easy to miss. The Goa list wants your covering letter to name everyone travelling with you, with passport numbers and relationship, and to "attach their passport and ticket copies".[3] In practice, put a copy of the shared reservation behind the letter so the officer sees one consistent booking for the group.
When does a held reservation fit, and when not?
| Wording you see | Source | Held reservation? |
|---|---|---|
| "Roundtrip flight reservation with the name of the traveller" | Goa, New Delhi[3][4] | Fits, if both dates and your name are on it. |
| "A booked flight ticket does not result in preferred processing" | Goa, New Delhi[3][4] | Confirms there is nothing to gain from paying early. |
| "Flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations or other proof of intended transport" | United States[7] | Fits; a full itinerary should go with it. |
| "Intra-Schengen flight reservation, train or bus itinerary or car reservation" | Goa[3] | A printed rail or bus route, or a reservation for the extra flight. |
| "Confirmed ticket" or proof of payment | Not on the Portuguese lists we read | May not be enough. Ask the post or buy a refundable fare. |
Goa or New Delhi: which one handles your file?
It depends where you live, not where your passport was issued. The Consulate General in Goa lists its area as "Goa, Maharashtra, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli".[6] VFS publishes separate tourism checklists for the Goa consulate and the New Delhi embassy, and you use the one for your area.[5] So a Pune resident follows the Goa list; someone in Bengaluru or Kolkata follows New Delhi's.
VFS adds two rules. You must have lived in India for at least six months to apply here. And residents of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh apply in Colombo or Dhaka, where France's embassies assess Portuguese tourist visas.[5] If you have just moved to India for work, you may need to apply where you lived before.
A small Goa detail from VFS: photos with spectacles are not accepted for that jurisdiction.[5] It has nothing to do with flights, but it is the sort of thing that sends people back to the photo studio on appointment day.
Fees and how long it takes
The VFS fee table shows €90 per adult and €45 per child aged 6 to 12, charged in rupees at the current rate, plus VFS's own service fee paid online when you book the slot.[5] Neither comes back if the visa is refused.[3]
Decisions should come within 15 calendar days of the file being admissible, extendable to 45 days in individual cases.[5] The Goa list adds that a file needs up to two working days to reach the consulate, and that the consulate's holidays do not count.[3] If the consulate asks for missing papers, the clock stops until you send them.
Say you want to be in Lisbon for a week from 20 April. Submitting in mid-March gives the file five weeks, which comfortably covers transit, the 15-day standard and a request for one more document. Submitting on 2 April leaves almost no slack.
Is Portugal the right country to apply to?
Apply to Portugal if it is your only Schengen stop, the place you spend the most nights, or the reason for the trip. With equal nights, the first country you enter decides.[1][2]
Lisbon four nights, Sintra a day trip, Porto three nights, Madrid two: seven Portuguese nights against two Spanish, so Portugal is correct. Reverse it, with Madrid, Seville and Barcelona for eight nights and Lisbon for three, and Spain is the right consulate. Our Spain visa guide covers that side.
Portugal trips often combine flights with the Lisbon to Porto train or a coach to the Algarve. The Goa checklist accepts a train or bus itinerary for movement between Schengen states, and printing your internal legs too makes the plan easy to follow.[3] If you leave from Porto instead of Lisbon, an open-jaw or multi-city reservation shows it neatly.
What your Portugal reservation needs to show
- Your name, matching the passport, and the name of each co-traveller if you book together.[3]
- A departure date and a return date, both on the page. The checklist names them explicitly.[3][4]
- The same dates as the employer's letter, which the Goa list says may give the purpose, itinerary and number of days of leave.[3]
- Accommodation for the entire stay, by hotel booking, rental, or package tour.[3] If some nights are still open, our hotel booking for visa can fill them.
- Insurance dated from the outbound flight to the return, covering the whole Schengen stay.[3]
- A PNR you can open yourself on the airline website.
Six steps for the travel part of a Portugal file
- Confirm your jurisdiction (Goa or New Delhi) and download that tourism checklist from VFS.
- Book and pay for the VFS appointment online; slots are confirmed only after payment.[5]
- Write the route down: arrival city, internal trains or coaches, other countries, departure city.
- Book the reservation close to the appointment, a few days before rather than a few weeks. The hold window is shown before payment on our booking page.
- Look the booking up on the carrier's website and set it beside your application form; our note on verifying a reservation before submission lists what to check.
- Print a copy for each applicant, and keep one behind the covering letter as Goa asks.
Portugal-specific slips we see
- Using the wrong checklist, for example New Delhi's while living in Mumbai.
- Insurance without the Travel Health Declaration, or a photocopy when Goa wants the original.[3]
- A one-way booking when every Portuguese list asks for a round trip.
- Documents in a third language without translation; Goa treats them as missing.[3]
- A covering letter that omits co-travellers or their booking copies.
- Applying in the last fortnight before travel.
Check-in, arrival and checking your PNR
When the visa arrives, buy a real ticket. You will board with that, not with the reservation. Lisbon border officers are entitled to ask how you plan to leave; the EU's border rules give a return or round-trip ticket as one of the usual answers.[8] Keep your paid return booking and hotel confirmations to hand when you land in Lisbon or Porto.
Portuguese posts do not say how they verify flights. A genuine PNR can be retrieved on the airline's website by anyone with your surname. The Goa checklist warns that any false statement leads to refusal or annulment and possible action under Portuguese law.[3] That is why we issue genuine reservations only, never altered or invented documents.
Applying for Portugal from the US, the Gulf or elsewhere
You apply in the country where you legally live.[1] In the United States, the Portuguese checklist asks for proof of US residence status as well as the roundtrip reservation and full itinerary.[7] In the UAE, the Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi's tourist checklist asks for a "Flight reservation including return ticket" and says processing takes a minimum of 15 calendar days; the copy we found is an older version, so check VFS for an update.[9] Our guide for Gulf-based Indian travellers covers residence-permit points, and how to get a dummy ticket for Portugal is a shorter walk-through.
Portugal visa flight reservation: your questions
Will buying a confirmed ticket help my Portugal visa?
No. Both the Goa consulate and the New Delhi embassy write that a booked flight ticket does not result in preferred processing. Their checklists ask for a roundtrip reservation with your name and the departure and return dates. Paying for a non-refundable fare before the decision only adds risk; buy it after the visa is in your passport.
I live in Pune. Do I apply to Goa or New Delhi?
Goa. The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa covers Goa, Maharashtra, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Pune is in Maharashtra. You still submit at a VFS centre, and you use the Goa tourism checklist. Residents of states outside that list follow the New Delhi embassy's checklist instead.
Do I need proof of the train from Lisbon to Porto?
The checklist asks for a train or bus itinerary when you travel between Schengen states, so a trip inside Portugal is not strictly covered. We still suggest printing the internal legs. It shows the officer how you move between hotels and costs nothing, because a timetable printout is enough before the visa decision.
How long before my trip should I apply?
You can apply up to 180 days ahead, and the Goa checklist highly advises at least one month before travel. Decisions normally take 15 calendar days from admissibility, but can reach 45, and the file needs up to two working days to reach Goa. Six weeks ahead is a sensible target for most trips.
Is a flight reservation from an online service accepted?
Portugal's checklists ask for a flight reservation and do not say who must make it. What matters is that the booking is genuine, carries your name and both dates, and can be found on the airline's website. Forged or doctored paperwork is another story entirely, and Portugal warns it brings refusal or annulment.
What if I change my travel dates after the visa is issued?
Plan your real trip within the validity and number of days printed on the visa sticker, then buy the ticket for those dates. The reservation was evidence of your plan, not a ticket you travel on. Dates beyond what the sticker allows mean a conversation with the issuing Portuguese post first.
Can I enter Schengen in Paris on a Portuguese visa?
Yes. A Portuguese Schengen visa is valid at any Schengen border, and many routes from India connect in Paris, Frankfurt or Istanbul. What counts is that Portugal remains your main destination by nights or purpose. A short stopover elsewhere does not change which consulate should handle your application.
What we charge and how to order
Our reservation is a real booking placed in the airline system under your name. You get a PDF with a PNR you can look up yourself. It is not a paid ticket and will not get you on a plane.
That is the fee for one traveller, one way or round trip. For multi-city plans we charge per pair of legs; the details are on dummy ticket price. Razorpay handles payment by UPI, card or netbanking. The PDF normally reaches your inbox about ten minutes later, and the order tracking page shows its status meanwhile. Still weighing a refundable fare against a hold? Our flight reservation for visa page compares them. Visiting somewhere else later? Try requirements by country, or onward ticket for one-way travel.

Round trip with both dates and your name, live PNR. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Please note: the Portuguese embassy or consulate makes the decision. A reservation should reflect a trip you really plan, and nothing we supply can secure a visa.
