Delhi is where most north Indian visa files end up, either at an embassy's own visa section or at a visa application centre in central Delhi. Before you think about the flight reservation, work out which mission is actually competent for your home state. In Delhi that question has more than one answer. This guide sets out the jurisdiction rules we could confirm on official pages, what the Delhi-side checklists say about flights, how Indira Gandhi International Airport fits into your route, and how to time a reservation around a Delhi appointment. Each rule links to its source at the end.

Which embassy decides a visa filed in Delhi?
It depends on the country, and the capital is less uniform than people assume. Three patterns show up on the official pages.
Regional split. Italy divides India into four consular areas. The New Delhi embassy only takes residents of the northern states listed above. If you live in Kerala or Gujarat and happen to be in Delhi for work, Italy expects you to apply in Mumbai instead.[1] Spain also splits India, but its New Delhi list is unusually wide. Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and the whole north-east sit with Delhi, while the south and the west go to Mumbai.[2] BLS adds a residence test: six months of living in the jurisdiction, and the city that issued your passport is irrelevant.[2]
One embassy for everyone. Austria's embassy in New Delhi covers all of India, plus Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It will only process applications from people who can prove habitual residence in that territory.[8]
Submit anywhere, decided elsewhere. Germany accepts Schengen files at every VFS centre nationwide, then sends each one to its Mumbai consulate to decide.[4] So a Delhi resident applying for Germany is, on paper, a Mumbai case. That changes nothing about your reservation, but it explains why German processing times are quoted from Mumbai.
A quick test before you pay anything: open the mission's page, find your state in its list, and only then book the appointment. A Delhi slot for the wrong jurisdiction usually means starting again, and a reservation dated for that slot is wasted.
Where do Delhi applicants hand in their files?
Almost always at an outsourced centre, not at the embassy counter. These are the Delhi locations we could confirm on official pages:
| Country | Delhi centre (official source) | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | VFS Global, 1st Floor, 27 K.G. Marg, New Delhi 110001. Further Italy centres in Jalandhar and Chandigarh.[1] | Visa Section of the Italian Embassy; VFS staff cannot decide.[1] |
| Spain | BLS International, Dr Gopaldas Bhawan, 28 Barakhamba Road, New Delhi 110001.[3] | Embassy of Spain, New Delhi.[2] |
| Japan | VFS in New Delhi, with drop-off points in Gurugram, Chandigarh and Lucknow that take fees by demand draft.[7] | Embassy of Japan, New Delhi.[6] |
| Netherlands | VFS Global centre in New Delhi (one of twelve Indian cities).[10] | Dutch mission; check the VFS letter. |
| UK | UK & Ireland Visa Application Centre at Shivaji Stadium Metro Station, Connaught Place (GOV.UK notice from 2015; confirm the current address with VFS).[11] | UK Visas and Immigration. |
| Germany | Any VFS centre in India.[4] | Consulate General, Mumbai.[4] |
One practical point about Japan: the New Delhi VFS page says fees there are paid in cash or by card in rupees, while the Gurugram, Chandigarh and Lucknow drop-off offices want separate demand drafts for the visa fee and the service charge.[7] If you pick a drop-off office to save a trip into central Delhi, get the drafts made the day before.
What do Delhi-side checklists say about flights?
Most of them ask for a reservation, a few ask for nothing, and none of the ones below asks you to buy a ticket first. In the checklists' own words:
- Austria (Embassy, New Delhi): "Round-trip flight reservations - travel itinerary", described as an airline reservation plus proof of any other means of travel.[9]
- Germany (all of India): item 11 on the tourism checklist is simply "Flight reservation". The same page warns that paying for a ticket early earns no "preferred processing".[5]
- United Kingdom: a Delhi visitor applicant can skip flight bookings, per the Home Office, which only wants them "(unless transiting)".[12] For an ordinary UK visit you can usually leave the reservation out. Our UK visa guide explains when it still helps.
- United States: the State Department's visitor page says to hold off on tickets until a visa is issued.[13] The interview does not hinge on a flight document; see our US visa guide.
For Italy and Spain, the checklist you download from VFS or BLS for the Delhi jurisdiction is the one that counts. We have put the exact Mumbai wording for both in our Italy and Spain guides, but the Delhi lists can differ. Read yours line by line rather than assuming.
Where a checklist asks for a confirmed or paid ticket in so many words, a held reservation may not satisfy it. In that case, ask the mission or buy a refundable fare. Don't try to pass a reservation off as something it isn't.

Flying out of Delhi: what the reservation should show
Show the route you would really take. For most applicants in the capital region that means a departure from DEL. At Indira Gandhi International, Terminal 3 is the only terminal handling international flights; Terminals 1 and 2 are domestic.[14] Nobody at a visa centre will ask about terminals. But it helps to know when you are checking whether a connection via another Indian city makes sense.
Delhi has nonstop options to most visa destinations. For example, Emirates says it operates 28 flights a week between Dubai and Delhi.[15] If your trip is to the Schengen area, a reservation leaving DEL for a European hub and returning to DEL is the plain, believable shape. A routing that starts in Mumbai when you live in Noida invites a question you'd rather not answer.
Two Delhi-specific habits are worth avoiding:
- Starting the trip from a city you don't live in because a fare looked cheaper online. The consulate reads the reservation as your plan.
- Dates that clash with your leave letter. Government and PSU employees in Delhi often submit a no-objection certificate with fixed dates. Your flight dates should sit inside them.

Who should book your Delhi appointment?
You should, on the provider's own website. The Netherlands is blunt about it: its India page tells applicants to make the appointment online with VFS Global and to avoid unnecessary costs by booking it themselves.[10] The same page says you must appear in person to submit, even if you are under 18, so a relative cannot simply drop your file off for you.[10]
Touts near Connaught Place and Barakhamba Road sometimes offer slots, "file checking" or travel documents for cash. Italy's embassy warns that it has no relationship with sellers outside its premises or the VFS offices.[1] If you need a reservation, order it online from a provider whose PNR you can check yourself. Then walk in with everything already printed.
A small habit that saves a second trip across town: carry the checklist itself. The Dutch page asks you to bring it to the appointment along with the documents on it.[10]
When should you book it, counting back from a Delhi appointment?
Order it 48 to 72 hours ahead of the slot, not on the day the slot is confirmed. Held reservations last up to two weeks; each airline fixes its own exact window. That window is generous for a single appointment and short for a slot that is a month away.
Say your appointment at the Spanish centre on Barakhamba Road is on 14 November. Ordering on the 11th or 12th leaves time to check the booking on the airline's website and fix a spelling slip. It still leaves the reservation comfortably live when the officer looks at it. Ordering on 20 October would be money spent twice.
The Schengen timing rules add another constraint. You can apply up to six months before travel and should apply at least 15 days ahead.[16] The flight date on your reservation therefore has to sit at least about two weeks after the appointment, and it must match the dates in your application form, insurance and hotel bookings. Our guide on when to book before a visa appointment works through more examples.
How to get a reservation for a Delhi application
- Confirm your mission and centre. Use the jurisdiction lists above. Book the slot directly on the VFS or BLS site.
- Fix your travel dates. They must agree with your leave letter, hotel bookings and insurance.
- Order online at our booking page. Enter every name exactly as printed in the passport. We work entirely online, so there is no office to visit and nothing to collect in Delhi.
- Pay ₹699 for each passenger with UPI, a debit or credit card, or netbanking. Razorpay handles the payment.
- Check the PNR yourself. Open the airline's "Manage booking" page, enter the booking reference and surname, and compare names and dates. Our verification guide shows where to look.
- Print it and file it with the rest of your documents, in the order the checklist gives.
If something goes wrong with the email, you can follow your order at the tracking page.
What does it cost in Delhi?
The same as anywhere in India: ₹699 per passenger, one way or round trip. A family of four applying together pays ₹2,796. Multi-city trips cost ₹699 for each pair of legs, and a hotel booking is charged per stay for each guest. Full details are on the price page. You will not find a cheaper "Delhi rate" with us, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to sell you a reservation outside a VFS or BLS centre. Italy's embassy states that no sellers outside its premises or VFS offices can influence processing or the decision.[1]
Delhi files: the flight-related slips we see most
Most of these are about consistency, not the reservation itself.
- Name order. Many north Indian passports print a single given name and a family name that differs from what people use day to day. Copy the passport, not your office ID. See our name format guide.
- Children left off. Every traveller in the visa file should appear on the reservation.
- Return date beyond the visa you asked for. If you request 12 days, a return on day 16 contradicts the form.
- Entry point in the wrong country. For a Schengen trip, the first country you land in should make sense for the mission you applied to; our Schengen guide covers the main-destination rule.
Delhi FAQ
Can I apply for an Italian visa in Delhi if I live in Mumbai?
Generally no. The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi only accepts residents of its northern jurisdiction: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh. Maharashtra belongs to the Consulate General in Mumbai. The embassy notes that legal residence in the relevant jurisdiction is required, with limited exceptions it describes on its page.
I live in Bhopal. Does Spain send me to Delhi or Mumbai?
Delhi. BLS lists Madhya Pradesh under the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi, even though Chhattisgarh next door is handled by Mumbai. Your home for the last half-year decides it; the passport office that issued your booklet does not. Book at a BLS centre that serves the Delhi jurisdiction.
Do I need a flight reservation for a UK visa from Delhi?
Usually not. In its supporting-documents guide, the Home Office says visitors needn't send flight bookings unless they are in transit. A reservation can still help you fix dates for your own planning, but it carries no weight on its own in a UK visitor application.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Delhi?
No. We are an online service. Everything happens on the site: you fill in the form, pay through UPI, card or netbanking, and the PDF is emailed, normally within ten minutes or so. There is nothing to collect in person, and nobody from us will meet you near a visa centre.
How long will my reservation stay live?
For a maximum of two weeks; the carrier chooses the precise length. So for a Delhi slot, place the order a couple of days beforehand. If your slot is rescheduled by more than a few days, check the booking again on the airline's site before you go, and order a fresh one if it has lapsed.
Should the reservation start from Delhi even if I'll connect through Mumbai?
Show the trip you would actually take. If you would fly DEL to BOM and then abroad, the reservation can show that. If you would fly direct from DEL, keep it simple. What matters to the consulate is that the dates and the final destination match the rest of your file.
Where is my German application decided if I submit in Delhi?
In Mumbai. German Missions in India state that a Schengen file lodged at any Indian VFS centre travels to the Mumbai consulate, which makes the call. Its tourism checklist names a flight reservation; buying a ticket early does not get you a faster answer.
