Switzerland sits outside the European Union but inside Schengen, so an Indian passport holder needs the same short-stay (C) visa as for France or Italy. The Swiss Embassy in New Delhi writes its own checklist, though, and it is short and strict. It wants documents in a fixed order, unstapled, and it says plainly that only the papers on the list are accepted. The flight line is one of the easiest to satisfy if you know what it actually says. Below we quote it, compare it with the Swiss wording in the UAE, and show how to make your reservation agree with the rest of the file. For rules shared by every Schengen country, see our Schengen visa flight reservation guide.
Switzerland visa key facts for 2026
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Do Indian citizens need a visa? | Yes, a Schengen (C) visa, good for visits totalling no more than 90 days within a rolling 180-day window.[1][4] |
| Flight wording, India | "Flight reservation", "With names of all travelers", plus intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental "if applicable".[3] |
| Flight wording, UAE | "Copy of flight reservation (incl. return flight)."[5] |
| Where to submit in India | At a VFS Global centre; the checklist is issued by the Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan.[3][4] |
| Visa fee | €90 adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 12, free under 6. VFS adds a service charge.[3][4] |
| When to apply | No more than 180 days before travel and at least 15 calendar days before.[4] |
| Processing | Usually 15 calendar days from receipt at the Embassy; longer in busy periods or if more papers are needed.[4] |
| Insurance | At least €30,000, valid for the whole Schengen stay, from the Embassy's list of approved Indian insurers.[3][4] |
What does the Swiss checklist say about flights?
It asks for a reservation. Nothing on the Indian tourist list mentions a paid ticket, an e-ticket number or proof of payment. Here is the wording from the two Swiss lists we read this month:
- Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan, tourist checklist (version dated October 2024): under the heading "Flight reservation" it reads "With names of all travelers" and then "If applicable proof of intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental."[3]
- Same checklist, families section: only the head of the family attaches certain papers, including a "flight booking (mentioning all the names of the travelling family members)".[3]
- Embassy of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain (September 2025): item 6, under "Flight ticket", asks for a "Copy of flight reservation (incl. return flight)."[5]
How we read it: both Swiss posts use the word reservation. The heading in Abu Dhabi says "Flight ticket", but the line beneath it asks for a copy of a reservation that includes the way home. The India list adds one condition worth taking seriously: every traveller must be named. If a family of four applies together, one booking that shows all four names is exactly what the Embassy describes.
Notice what the India list does not ask for. There is no line saying the booking must be paid, and no request for a ticket number. That matters because the Swiss list also says "Only the documents mentioned on the checklist are accepted". Adding a costly non-refundable fare earns you nothing extra.[3]
Held booking or bought fare: which does Switzerland want?
For the Swiss lists we checked, a held reservation fits. The table puts each phrase next to what it means for you.
| Exact phrase | Where | Does a held reservation fit? |
|---|---|---|
| "Flight reservation" / "With names of all travelers" | India[3] | Yes, provided every person applying appears on it. |
| "Flight booking (mentioning all the names of the travelling family members)" | India, families[3] | Yes. One PNR covering the whole family is the neat way to show it. |
| "Copy of flight reservation (incl. return flight)" | UAE and Bahrain[5] | Yes, as long as the return leg is on the same document. |
| "Proof of intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental" | India[3] | A rail itinerary or a reservation for the internal flight covers it. |
| "Confirmed ticket", "e-ticket" or "proof of payment" | Not on the Swiss lists we read | Possibly not. If a Swiss post you apply to uses such words, follow them or ask. |
Our view, for what it is worth: Swiss trips are expensive enough already. Keep the money for the real fare and buy it once the visa sticker is in your passport, for dates inside its validity.
Who handles a Swiss visa application in India?
You submit at a VFS Global visa centre, which collects your papers and fingerprints and passes the file to the Embassy. VFS says the decision rests with the Embassy or Consulate alone.[4] The checklist you follow is headed "Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan".[3] VFS also notes that you can apply in person at the Embassy in New Delhi, but only with an appointment requested by email at least a month before travel.[4]
A small practical point: the Swiss list wants documents "in the exact order given" and "not stapled".[3] Put the flight reservation where the list puts it, after insurance and before accommodation. It sounds fussy. It also saves the counter staff from shuffling your file in front of you.
What does it cost and how early should you apply?
Adults pay a €90 visa fee. Children aged 6 to 12 pay half that, and under-sixes pay nothing.[3][4] The rupee amount follows the exchange rate, and VFS charges its own service fee on top, shown when you book. Neither is refunded if the visa is refused.
VFS India states that short-stay applications cannot go in more than 180 days ahead and must be in at least 15 calendar days before travel. Processing is usually 15 calendar days from the day the Embassy receives the file, and it can stretch in busy seasons.[4] EU rules allow up to 45 days in individual cases.[1]
A worked example. You want to see the Jungfrau region from 12 June. We would book the VFS slot in late April or early May. Fifteen days is the minimum, not a plan, and summer is when everyone in India wants Switzerland at once.
Is Switzerland really your main destination?
Switzerland is the right consulate when it is your only Schengen stop, when it gets the largest share of your nights, or when it is the reason you are travelling at all. With equal nights, you apply to the country you enter first.[1][2]
Two examples. Zurich two nights, Lucerne two, Interlaken three, then Paris three: seven Swiss nights against three French, so Switzerland is right. Now take Paris five nights and Geneva two. France has the longer stay, so the French consulate should get the file, even though Geneva is the highlight in your head. Our guide to choosing the right Schengen country works through trickier splits.
When Switzerland is correct, show how you move around. Swiss trips are mostly by train, and the checklist names a "train itinerary" as acceptable proof.[3] A printed route from the Swiss rail timetable for each leg is usually enough. If you add Milan or Munich by air, a multi-city reservation can show that leg too.
What should your Swiss flight reservation show?
- Every applicant's name, spelt as in the passport. The India list says so twice.[3]
- Your Indian departure city and the way home. The UAE list spells out "incl. return flight"; the India list assumes it.[3][5]
- Dates that match the employer's letter. The Swiss list asks for an introduction letter from your employer that mentions travel dates and purpose.[3]
- Hotel nights that line up with the flight dates. The list asks for confirmation of hotel reservations, package tours or advance payments.[3] Our hotel booking for visa can cover nights still undecided.
- Insurance from the first flight to the last. The policy has to cover the entire stay within Schengen.[3]
- A booking code that works when you type it, with your surname, into the airline's "Manage booking" tool.
Putting the flight part of a Swiss file together
- Count nights per country and confirm Switzerland leads.
- Download the current tourist checklist from the VFS Switzerland India page. Ours was dated October 2024.
- Book your VFS slot. The reservation must still be live on that date.
- Settle the route: arrival airport (Zurich or Geneva are the usual choices), trains inside Switzerland, any other Schengen stops, departure airport.
- Book the reservation with all travellers on one booking, two to four days before the appointment. The hold window appears on our booking page before you pay.
- Open the PNR on the airline website and compare names and dates with the form. Our guide on checking a reservation before submission walks through it.
- Print it on A4 and slot it into the order the checklist sets.
Small things that trip up Swiss applications
- A reservation missing a family member. The Embassy asks for all names; a separate booking for one child invites questions.
- Insurance from a company not on the approved list. VFS India says only policies from listed Indian insurers are accepted.[4]
- Stapled papers or extra documents the list does not name.[3]
- Applying to Switzerland for a France-heavy trip because Zurich has the cheaper flight.
- An employer letter with different dates from the reservation.
- Booking the reservation weeks early, so the hold has lapsed by appointment day.
What about check-in and the border on arrival?
Once the visa is issued you fly on a ticket you have paid for. The reservation did its job at the application stage and cannot be used to board. Border guards at Zurich or Geneva can still ask how you will get home: Annex I of the Borders Code names a return or round-trip ticket as typical evidence.[6] Carry a printout of your real return booking, your hotel confirmations and your insurance in hand luggage, not in the checked bag.
Anyone with your surname and booking code can retrieve a genuine booking online. We create genuine reservations only and never edit or invent tickets. A false document is a refusal ground under the Visa Code.[2]
Applying from the UAE or another country
You apply where you legally live. Residents of the UAE and Bahrain follow the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi's list, which asks for a copy of the reservation including the return flight and warns that you cannot take your passport back while the file is being processed. It says processing "generally takes 15 days".[5] Indian expats in the Gulf can also read our guide for Gulf-based Indian travellers. If you hold a passport that does not need a Schengen visa, none of this paperwork applies for a short visit, though you should still carry proof of return.[6]

Switzerland visa flight reservation: common questions
Do I need to buy a ticket before applying for a Swiss visa?
No. The Swiss tourist checklist for India wants a reservation naming every traveller, and says nothing about payment or a ticket number. Buy your real fare after the visa is issued, for dates that fall inside the validity printed on the sticker, so a refusal does not cost you the airfare as well.
Should my whole family be on one reservation?
That is the cleanest option. The checklist says the head of the family attaches the flight booking mentioning all the names of the travelling family members. One booking with every name, spelt as in each passport, matches that wording directly. Separate bookings are not forbidden, but they make the file harder to follow and easier to get wrong.
Do I need to show Swiss train tickets?
The India checklist asks for proof of intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental "if applicable". If you move between Swiss cities by train, a printed itinerary for each leg answers it. You do not need to buy rail passes before the visa decision. What matters is that the route on paper matches your cover story and hotel nights.
How early can I apply for a Switzerland visa from India?
VFS India says short-stay applications cannot be lodged more than 180 days before travel and must be in at least 15 calendar days before. Processing is usually 15 calendar days once the Embassy receives the file. For summer travel we suggest applying six to eight weeks ahead, because appointment slots fill quickly.
Is a dummy ticket legal for a Swiss visa?
The Swiss checklist asks for a reservation, and a real one sitting in the airline's system is perfectly lawful to submit. A forged or edited PDF with a made-up booking code is not, and false documents are a refusal ground under the EU Visa Code. Describe what you submit honestly as a reservation, and make sure the trip it shows is real.
Can I land in Milan or Munich on a Swiss visa?
Yes. A Schengen visa issued by Switzerland lets you cross any Schengen external border. Many travellers fly into Milan and take the train north. What decides it is the main destination, so Switzerland needs the bulk of your nights or the core purpose. If Italy or Germany takes more nights, apply there instead.
What if the Embassy issues a visa for fewer days than I asked?
Book your real ticket for dates that fit the visa you received, not the dates on your reservation. The reservation only supported the application and is not a ticket you can travel on. Should the sticker not cover the trip you set out, speak to the issuing Embassy before paying for flights.
Price and how to book
You pick the route and dates; we place a genuine booking under the passenger names you give and email the PDF with its PNR. Nobody can board on it, because nothing has been paid to the airline.
Every figure above covers a single passenger for either a one-way or a return route. A trip with extra stops costs one fare per pair of legs (see dummy ticket price). Payment runs through Razorpay by UPI, card or netbanking, delivery usually takes about 10 minutes, and order tracking shows where things stand. If you are still deciding between a held booking and a refundable fare, read flight reservation for visa. Rules for other destinations are in requirements by country, and one-way travellers can see onward ticket.
