Austria's paperwork is tidy and its deadlines are firm. The Embassy in New Delhi publishes a numbered checklist, and the bit that catches people out is not the flight but the calendar: if your file reaches the Embassy with fewer than 15 working days to go before travel, it is sent back to VFS unopened. On flights, the Indian list is relaxed. Elsewhere, Austrian posts can be far stricter, and we show you one that is. Read on for the exact wording, a Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck example, and the practical order of steps. Shared Schengen rules live in our Schengen visa flight reservation guide.
Austria visa key facts for 2026

|---|---|
| Do Indians need a visa? | Yes, a Schengen (C) visa for up to 90 days; Austria is one of 29 Schengen countries.[4] |
| Flight wording, India | "Round-trip flight reservations - travel itinerary: airline reservation and proof of other means of travel within Austria/EU in case of onward travel".[3] |
| Flight wording, Saudi Arabia | "Confirmed flight reservation including return flight", issued and printed "from the official airline website (no travel agency booking)".[5] |

| Fee | €90 adults, €45 children 6 to 12, nil under 6, plus a VFS service charge.[4] |
| Earliest and latest | Not more than 180 days before travel; at least 15 working days before, and the Embassy advises a month.[3][4] |
| Processing | Up to 15 working days after receipt, extendable to 45 calendar days.[3] |
| Insurance | €30,000 minimum, whole Schengen area; from 1 January 2026 only from the approved Indian insurers list.[3][4] |
What does Austria's checklist say about flight tickets?
For India, it asks for reservations. For some other countries, Austrian wording is tighter. Here are three versions side by side:
- Embassy of Austria, New Delhi, "Visa for Tourism" checklist (updated March 2026): item 6 reads "Round-trip flight reservations - travel itinerary: airline reservation and proof of other means of travel within Austria/EU in case of onward travel". Item 5 asks for a cover letter giving "transport and accommodation details".[3]
- Austria checklist used at VFS Global in Saudi Arabia (2025 file): "Confirmed flight reservation including return flight", followed by "The flight reservation must be issued and printed from the official airline website (no travel agency booking)."[5]
- Austria tourism checklist used at VFS Global in Egypt (2023 file): "Flight Reservation, indicating the complete itinerary of the tour."[6]
The honest reading: for an Indian resident, the New Delhi list asks for an airline reservation and nothing more, so a held round trip with a working PNR fits. Saudi Arabia is different. "No travel agency booking" rules out any reservation made through an agent, and that includes ours. If you live in the Kingdom, hold or buy the seat directly on the airline's website, ideally a refundable fare, and follow that checklist to the letter.
The word "itinerary" in the India line matters too. Austria wants to see the whole journey, not just the flight to Vienna. If you go on to Prague or Munich by train, the checklist asks for proof of that leg as well.[3]
A quick self-test before you print: lay the reservation, the cover letter and the hotel bookings side by side. Could a stranger trace your route from Delhi to Vienna, around Austria and back home without asking you a single question? If yes, the travel part of the file is doing its job. If there is a gap of two nights or a city with no way in, fix it now rather than at the counter.
Which Austrian wording accepts a hold, and which does not?
| Austrian wording | Where | Our reservation? |
|---|---|---|
| "Round-trip flight reservations - travel itinerary: airline reservation" | India[3] | Fits. Show the out and back legs on one booking. |
| "Flight Reservation, indicating the complete itinerary of the tour" | Egypt[6] | Fits, if every leg of the trip is shown. |
| "Confirmed flight reservation" from "the official airline website (no travel agency booking)" | Saudi Arabia[5] | Does not fit. Book directly with the airline. |
| "Confirmed flight / train ticket" for travel between Schengen countries | Saudi Arabia[5] | Possibly not. A car rental reservation is the listed alternative. |
We would rather lose a sale than see you refused, so we say it plainly: if your checklist says the booking must come from the airline's site, do not send an agency reservation.
Fees, deadlines and the 15-working-day cut-off
An adult pays €90 for an Austrian Schengen visa. The charge halves to €45 between the ages of 6 and 12, and under-sixes are exempt. VFS adds a service charge, which it listed as INR 2,479 when we checked, and neither amount is refunded on refusal.[4]
The deadlines are where Austria is unforgiving. The checklist says that a file received by the Embassy "less than 15 working days before the intended travel date" is returned to VFS with the passport, and it advises applying "at least 1 month prior".[3] Working days, not calendar days. Count weekends and Indian and Austrian holidays out.
A worked example: you fly on Friday 18 December. Fifteen working days before that falls around 27 November, and that is the date the Embassy must already have your file, not the date you walk into VFS. Your papers still have to travel from the centre to the Embassy, and Christmas week is busy everywhere. Submitting on 25 November is already cutting it fine. We would aim for early November, which also leaves room if the Embassy asks for one more paper.
Processing itself "can take up to 15 working days", and longer, up to 45 calendar days, when the Embassy needs to look harder.[3]
Should you apply to Austria or another Schengen country?
You apply to Austria if it is your only Schengen country, the one with most nights, or the main point of the trip. A tie on nights goes to the first country you enter.[1][2]
Austria is often paired with neighbours. Take Vienna three nights, Salzburg two, Hallstatt one and Innsbruck two: eight Austrian nights. Add two nights in Munich and Austria is still clearly the main destination. Now try Vienna two nights, Budapest three and Prague three. Austria is the smallest stay, so the Austrian Embassy is not the right place; apply to Hungary or Czechia, whichever comes first if their nights tie.
For trips like these, the trains are part of your evidence. The India list asks for "proof of other means of travel within Austria/EU in case of onward travel".[3] Print the rail route for each leg. If you fly between cities, a multi-city reservation covers it, and our page on Schengen trips across several countries goes deeper.
What should the Austrian reservation contain?
- Passenger names as printed in each passport. The cover letter must name accompanying persons, so the booking should list the same people.[3]
- Both directions, starting and ending in your Indian city. "Round-trip" is in the first line of item 6.[3]
- Dates that agree with your employer's NOC and the cover letter. The checklist asks for a company NOC to leave and your official email address on the form.[3]
- Accommodation for each night, by hotel reservation or tour organiser's letter.[3] For open nights, see our hotel booking for visa.
- Insurance across the full trip, from an approved insurer.[4]
- A booking reference that the airline's website recognises.
Seven steps to the flight section of an Austria file
- Count your nights and confirm Austria leads.
- Fetch the tourism checklist from VFS Austria India; the one we used is marked "Updated March 2026".
- Pick a VFS date at least a month before travel, and well clear of the 15-working-day line.
- Write the cover letter with purpose, duration, companions, transport and hotels, as item 5 asks.
- Reserve the flights two to four days before the appointment. You will see the hold window on our booking page before paying.
- Test the PNR on the airline's site; the guide to verifying before submission lists what to compare.
- Arrange the papers in the checklist's numbered order and sign the declaration at the end.
Austria-specific slips to avoid
- Submitting inside the 15-working-day window. The file comes back without a decision.[3]
- An insurer not on the approved list since the January 2026 change.[4]
- Old ITR copies. The 2026 list asks for ITR "with barcode" for the last two years.[3]
- No onward rail proof on a Vienna to Prague plan.
- An agency reservation in Saudi Arabia, where the list demands an airline-website booking.[5]
- A missing official email address on the form or business card.[3]
At check-in and at the Austrian border
After approval, buy the ticket you will actually travel on. Our reservation helps you apply; it is not something an airline will board you with. On arrival at Vienna or at your first Schengen airport, the officer can ask for evidence that you will go home, and the Borders Code's annex of supporting papers includes a return or round-trip ticket.[7] Keep the paid return, hotel bookings and policy in your cabin bag.
The Embassy may ask for more documents or an interview, as the checklist warns.[3] If it ever wants to check your booking, a genuine PNR will be there in the airline's system. We never alter or fabricate tickets, and supporting papers of doubtful authenticity are grounds for refusal under the Visa Code.[2]
Visiting family in Austria, or applying from abroad
If a relative or friend in Austria is inviting you, VFS India has a separate visitors' checklist, also updated March 2026, that adds the sponsor's electronic letter of guarantee, known as EVE ("Elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung"). Its flight item uses exactly the same round-trip reservation wording as the tourism list.[8] In other words, the host's guarantee speaks for your costs, while your own reservation still has to show how you arrive and leave. Make sure the dates in the host's invitation, the EVE and your booking all agree.
Applying from outside India? Use the Austrian checklist for the country where you live. As shown above, the Saudi list asks for an airline-website booking, and the Egyptian list for a reservation showing the full tour.[5][6] Gulf residents can also read our guide for Gulf-based Indians, and how to get a dummy ticket for Austria is a short version of this page.
Austria visa flight reservation: frequently asked
Do I need a paid ticket for an Austrian tourist visa from India?
No. The Embassy of Austria's March 2026 tourism checklist asks for round-trip flight reservations and an itinerary, not a purchased ticket. A held booking under your name, with outbound and return flights and a code the airline recognises, meets that item. Buy the real fare only after the visa is granted and printed in your passport.
I live in Riyadh. Can I use your reservation for Austria?
We would advise against it. The Austrian checklist used at VFS in Saudi Arabia says the reservation must be issued and printed from the official airline website, with no travel agency booking. Any agency reservation, ours included, does not match that wording. Book or hold the seat directly with the airline instead, and choose a refundable fare if you pay.
What happens if I apply too close to my travel date?
The New Delhi checklist says that if the Embassy receives a file less than 15 working days before the intended travel date, it returns the application and passport to VFS. Remember that files from centres outside Delhi need about two working days to arrive. Applying at least a month ahead, as the Embassy advises, avoids the problem.
Do I need train tickets from Vienna to Salzburg?
The checklist asks for proof of other means of travel within Austria or the EU in case of onward travel. A printed rail itinerary for each leg shows that plan without spending money before the decision. If your trip continues to another country, include that leg as well, because it is the part officers most often want to see.
Which travel insurance does Austria accept from India?
From 1 January 2026, VFS India says Austria accepts travel medical insurance only from the companies on its approved list. The policy needs at least €30,000 of cover, must be valid across the Schengen area, and has to cover the whole stay. Check your insurer against the current list before you buy the policy.
Can I fly into Munich and take the train to Salzburg?
Yes. You may cross into the Schengen area wherever suits you, and Munich to Salzburg is a common rail route. Keep Austria as your main destination by nights or purpose, show the train leg in your itinerary, and make sure your insurance starts on the day you land in Germany rather than the day you cross into Austria.
Can the Embassy check whether my reservation is real?
Austria does not publish its verification methods, but a genuine booking can be retrieved on the airline's website with the surname and reference. The Embassy can also ask for more documents or call you for an interview. Submit only a real reservation, describe it accurately in the cover letter, and you have nothing to worry about.
Price and ordering
Here is what you are buying: a seat reservation placed in a real airline booking, issued with a PNR in the traveller's name for the dates you request. Payment to the airline is not part of it, so it is not valid for travel.
Rates apply per person and are the same whether you need a single leg or a return. Itineraries with several stops are priced by each pair of legs, explained on dummy ticket price. Checkout is through Razorpay with UPI, cards or netbanking; most orders arrive by email in around 10 minutes, and you can follow yours at track.html. Not sure a hold is right for you? Flight reservation for visa explains the alternatives. Other countries' rules are on requirements by country, and if you are travelling one way, see onward ticket.
