Johannesburg is where a big share of southern Africa's visa paperwork ends up. South Africans from Soweto to Sandton apply here, and so do the many Zimbabwean, Nigerian, Indian, Pakistani and Malawian professionals who have made Gauteng home. Since August 2026 the city also hosts one of the US government's regional visa hubs, which means people from neighbouring countries now fly in for interviews. This page is written for residents: which offices handle your application, what each one actually writes about flights, which routes out of O.R. Tambo look natural on a reservation, and how to order one. Everything we do happens on the web; you will not find a DummyTicketPrice counter in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Which office takes a Johannesburg resident's visa file?
It depends on the country you are visiting, and in Gauteng you usually have more than one centre within an hour's drive. Germany has outsourced Schengen intake to TLScontact, and for Gauteng the closest of its five centres is Centurion, between Johannesburg and Pretoria.[1] The Netherlands works through VFS Global and lists centres in both Johannesburg and Pretoria.[3] UK applications also run through VFS, which opened its South African network on 22 October 2024 with a Johannesburg centre among the five.[5] For the United States you go to the consulate itself.
One rule cuts across all of these: you apply where you legally live. The Dutch centres, for instance, accept applications from residents of South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Réunion.[3] If you moved to Johannesburg last month and your permit is still being processed, ask the mission before you book anything.
How does Germany's South Africa checklist word the flight item?
It asks for a reservation, not a purchase. Germany's family-and-friends checklist for South Africa (version of 18 March 2026) includes, among documents proving the purpose of travel, a "Flight reservation (round trip)", with rail tickets where relevant.[2] The tourism and business lists follow the same structure, so download the one for your purpose.
The same checklist contains three points Johannesburg applicants trip over:
- Timing. You may submit up to six months before travel, and processing averages 15 days at the mission, plus courier time. If your trip is within two weeks, the checklist suggests postponing rather than hoping for speed.[2]
- Main destination. Germany's posts take the file only when Germany is where you spend most of the trip.[2] A week in Munich and ten days in Rome belongs with Italy.
- Order of documents. The printed, signed checklist goes in with the file, sorted in its order.[2] Put the reservation exactly where the list puts it.
Our view: a held reservation fits this wording well. Order it a few days before the TLS appointment, not when you first open VIDEX.
How do the Dutch centres in Johannesburg treat a flight booking?
They are the most relaxed on paper. For tourists, the Dutch list wants a booking under your own name covering the trip into and out of Schengen, or some other proof of your plans. A paid ticket, it states, is unnecessary.[4] A colour copy is enough.
The same checklist asks for proof of legal residence in the country where you apply. A residence permit counts if it is valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.[4] For a foreign national in Johannesburg, that line matters more than the flight. Check the expiry date on your permit before you check anything else.
Should a Johannesburg applicant include flights in a UK file?
Usually not. In its visitor-documents guidance, the Home Office classes flight bookings as unnecessary for anyone who is not transiting.[6] South Africa is now on the UK's visa national list, and our guide for South African travellers covers that change. If your dates are firm, put them in the online form and spend your effort on bank statements, employment letters and proof of ties to Gauteng.
Biometrics happen at VFS. The October 2024 launch announcement names centres in Johannesburg and Pretoria among the five, along with optional extras such as keeping your passport while you wait.[5] Those extras cost money and, as VFS itself says, do not change the outcome.
How has the Johannesburg US consulate changed in 2026?
It has become a regional hub. On 1 August 2026 the State Department stopped routine visa work at 25 posts in sub-Saharan Africa, including Durban and Harare, and moved it to selected hubs.[7] The US Embassy in Zimbabwe now tells Zimbabwean citizens and residents to book at Johannesburg or Cape Town.[7] For Durban residents that means a trip inland; for Johannesburg residents it means more competition for slots, so we'd book the interview early.
The flight advice has not changed. Washington tells would-be visitors to keep their money until the visa is actually in the passport.[8] A reservation is optional at the interview. Some people like having one to answer date questions cleanly, and that is all it does.
One more 2026 change affects many Johannesburg expats. Under Presidential Proclamation 10998, from 1 January 2026 the US partially suspended visitor and student visa issuance to nationals of 19 countries, a list that includes Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.[9] If that covers your passport, living in South Africa does not lift it, and no flight document will change the result. Check the current position before you pay the visa fee.

What changes if you are a foreign national living in Johannesburg?
Your South African permit becomes part of the visa file, and it is checked as closely as the flight. Germany's checklist says plainly that non-South African citizens must provide a valid residency or work permit that allows them to re-enter South Africa at the end of the journey, and asks for previous passports too.[2] Dutch rules set a minimum of three months of permit validity remaining after you leave Schengen.[4]
That has a practical effect on the reservation. The return leg should land in Johannesburg, not in your home country, because the whole point is that you are coming back to a life in Gauteng. A Pakistani engineer in Midrand flying to Hamburg should show JNB to Hamburg and Hamburg back to JNB. Planning a detour through Lahore before returning? Mention it in your covering letter and make sure the dates still sit inside your permit.
Some expats ask whether they can apply in their home country instead. Generally no. Schengen countries want the file lodged where you reside, and the Dutch list requires a reason from anyone lodging it elsewhere.[4] Our guide for African passport holders goes through the nationality-specific angles.
How do the Johannesburg options compare?
| Destination | Where a Gauteng resident applies | Official wording on flights | What we'd send |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | TLScontact, Centurion[1] | "Flight reservation (round trip)"[2] | Held reservation, return to JNB |
| Netherlands | VFS Johannesburg or Pretoria[3] | A booking in your name; purchase unnecessary[4] | Reservation is fine |
| Other Schengen states | Each state's own provider | EU rules allow a reservation as evidence of the trip[11] | Read that state's list first |
| United Kingdom | VFS Johannesburg or Pretoria[5] | Flight bookings not needed except for transit[6] | Usually nothing |
| United States | Consulate General Johannesburg[7] | Don't buy tickets before the visa[8] | Optional reservation |
Which flights from O.R. Tambo look right on a reservation?
The ones you would really take. O.R. Tambo is South Africa's main international gateway, and almost every long-haul itinerary from Johannesburg starts there.[10] A few patterns we see often:
- Via the Gulf. Emirates lists Dubai to Johannesburg among its most popular routes and connects onward to Europe and Asia.[12] A JNB–Dubai–Amsterdam itinerary is ordinary for a Dutch file.
- Straight to a European hub. If a nonstop service suits your main destination, confirm it operates on your dates on the carrier's own website before you book.
- Via Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Ethiopian and Kenya Airways connections often suit travellers heading to West Africa or the Middle East. See our notes on Ethiopian and Kenya Airways bookings.

Example: a Randburg couple visiting family in Cologne
Suppose Thabo and Leila live in Randburg. He is South African; she is a Zimbabwean citizen with a South African work permit. Their daughter studies in Cologne, and they want three weeks there over Christmas. Germany is the only destination, so the German missions handle both files.[2]
They book TLS Centurion for 3 November. Leila adds her work permit and old passports, as the checklist asks of non-South Africans.[2] The daughter sends an invitation letter, dated within three months, plus a copy of her German residence permit. We'd order one reservation for both on 30 October: JNB to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf on 18 December, back to JNB on 8 January. The insurance and leave letters use the same dates.
Notice what we would not do. We wouldn't route Leila home through Harare unless she really plans it, and we wouldn't let the return date run past her permit's expiry. Either of those raises questions an officer has to resolve, and unresolved questions tend to become refusals.
How do you order a reservation from Johannesburg?
- Find the right centre and checklist using the table above, and read how it words the flight item.
- Enter your route on our booking page, usually from JNB, with dates that match your form.
- Type each name as on the passport's data page, including middle names if your application shows them.
- Pay $9 per passenger by card. Single and return trips are the same price.
- Look out for our email, usually about 10 minutes later. Check your junk folder if it is slow.
- Look the PNR up on the carrier's website using your last name. This guide shows how.
Chasing an order? Track it here. Rupee, pound and Gulf prices sit on our price page, and the hotel reservation service covers the accommodation item.
What is the right moment to order before a Gauteng appointment?
Within the last few days. Holds run for up to fourteen days; carriers decide the precise expiry, and a few fares expire sooner. Germany's average of 15 days' processing means a booking made three weeks before your TLS slot may lapse before anyone looks at it.[2] We'd order on the Friday before a Tuesday appointment. Should the mission want current flight details later, buy a replacement then.
What goes wrong for Johannesburg applicants?
- A permit that expires mid-trip. For foreign residents this is the commonest problem we hear about, and no flight booking fixes it.
- Booking at the wrong mission. A trip that is mostly Italy does not go to the German centre in Centurion.
- Flight dates that disagree with the insurance, invitation or leave letter.
- Edited or "generated" PDFs. A booking reference that leads nowhere on the carrier's website damages the file.
- Misdescribing the document. It is a reservation; use that word on forms and at interviews.
Johannesburg FAQ
Do you have an office in Johannesburg or Sandton?
No. DummyTicketPrice works only online, so there is nowhere in Gauteng to visit. You fill in the booking form, pay $9 per passenger by card, and the reservation arrives by email, normally within ten minutes or so. A copy shop near the TLS or VFS centre can print it. Support runs on WhatsApp and email.
Does the German checklist in South Africa accept a reservation?
Its wording asks for a reservation. Germany's March 2026 checklist for South Africa asks for a "Flight reservation (round trip)" as proof of purpose. That does not require a paid ticket at the application stage. The mission still decides, and it can ask for more documents during processing if it wants them.
I am a Zimbabwean living in Johannesburg. Where do I apply for a US visa?
Generally where you live, which is Johannesburg or Cape Town; since August 2026 those are also the hubs for Zimbabwe itself. Be aware that Zimbabwe is among the 19 countries whose nationals face a partial suspension of visitor and student visas from 1 January 2026, so check the State Department's current guidance before paying.
Which TLS centre is nearest to Johannesburg?
Centurion. Germany lists TLScontact centres in Bloemfontein, Centurion, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, and Centurion lies between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Johannesburg itself is not on that list. Other Schengen states use different providers, so for the Netherlands, for instance, you would go to VFS in Johannesburg or Pretoria.
Can I use the reservation to board a flight at O.R. Tambo?
No. An airline PNR holds the seat, yet without payment the O.R. Tambo check-in desk will turn it away. When the visa arrives, purchase a proper fare for dates it covers. Many people end up flying the same route they reserved, though nothing obliges you to.
Should my return flight end in Johannesburg or my home country?
In Johannesburg, if that is where you will go back to. Missions look for a reason you will return to the place you applied from, and for foreign residents that is your South African job and permit. Show a different return city only if that is your real plan, and explain it in your cover letter.
For how many days does a Johannesburg booking hold?
No more than fourteen, and each airline chooses its own limit. That is why we suggest ordering it a few days before your appointment. If your appointment moves, or the consulate takes longer than usual and asks for current flight details, buy a new reservation closer to the new date.
Reservation for your Gauteng appointment
$9 per passenger, online only, checkable on the airline's website.
Keep it honest: a flight reservation is supporting paperwork, not a ticket and not a promise of a visa. The decision rests with the consulate, and with the airline at check-in.
