Capetonians rarely have to fly to Gauteng for a visa. Most of the countries people here visit run a centre in the city, and the US consulate in Westlake still interviews locally. That is good news, but it also means more choices to get right: which provider, which province rule, which checklist. This page is for people who live in Cape Town and the wider Western Cape, whether you were born in Mitchells Plain or moved here from Harare, Lagos, Lilongwe or Karachi. It explains who takes your file, what each one says about flights, how routes out of Cape Town International usually look, and the way to get a reservation from us. There is no Cape Town branch; the whole service runs on the web. Gauteng residents should read our Johannesburg guide instead, which also covers Germany's South African checklist in detail.

Which Belgian centre serves the Western Cape?
Belgium is the clearest example of a provincial rule. Its TLScontact page says residents of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape or Namibia apply at TLScontact Cape Town or Port Elizabeth, while Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the other northern provinces, plus Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, use Centurion, Durban or Bloemfontein.[4] The same page adds a practical detail: fees at the centre are paid by card, and cash is refused.[4]
That provincial split matters if you have recently moved. A Durban family who relocated to Constantia in June now belongs to Cape Town for Belgium. Bring proof of your Western Cape address, such as a lease or a municipal account, so the centre has no reason to send you elsewhere.
Belgium also matters for a reason people overlook. If your trip is mostly in Bruges and Ghent with a day in Amsterdam, Belgium is your main destination and the Belgian centre is where the file goes, not VFS for the Netherlands.
What does the Dutch centre in Cape Town ask for?
The Netherlands sends South African residents to VFS Global in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg or Pretoria, and the same centres accept residents of Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Réunion.[1] Its tourism list asks for a booking under your name for the journeys into and out of the Schengen area, or another document showing your plans, and makes clear you are not expected to have paid for a ticket.[2] A colour copy of the document is enough.
For a Dutch file, a held reservation therefore matches the wording directly. The more important page for many Capetonians is the residence one: a residence permit counts only if three months of validity remain after your Schengen exit.[2] We cover that in the section on foreign residents below.
How does Germany handle Cape Town applicants?
Germany outsources Schengen intake to TLScontact, which has five South African centres, one of them in Cape Town; the others are Bloemfontein, Centurion, Durban and Port Elizabeth.[3] Cape Town residents can therefore stay home. The German checklist for South Africa asks for a round-trip flight reservation, and our Johannesburg page explains that checklist line by line, so we won't repeat it here.
One newer point is worth knowing. The German missions in South Africa note that from 1 July 2025 the remonstration procedure was abolished.[3] In plain terms, the old route of asking the mission to reconsider a refusal is gone, so a complete, consistent file the first time matters even more. That is where matching dates across flight, insurance and accommodation earn their keep.

Do you still interview for a US visa in Cape Town?
Yes. The US mission says it issues visas to South African and third-country nationals at its consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.[7] However, Durban is on the list of 25 posts where routine visa services stopped from 1 August 2026.[7] For people in the Western Cape, Cape Town remains the local option, and you may share the queue with applicants who used to go to Durban.
A few details from the mission's own page help with planning. Consular staff add new appointments every Thursday afternoon, South African time, for Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.[7] The Cape Town consulate is at 2 Reddam Avenue, Westlake, and the mission warns that muggings and assaults have happened on Reddam Avenue between the consulate and Steenberg Village, so take care if you walk.[7] There is no storage for prohibited items, so leave bags and devices in the car or at home.
As for flights, Washington's line is simple: no flight purchases before the visa is approved.[8] At the interview a reservation is optional. We would not suggest spending on one unless it genuinely helps you answer date questions.
Do UK applicants in Cape Town need a flight booking?
Normally no. South African UK applications run through VFS Global, which opened five centres on 22 October 2024; the Cape Town one is on the 9th floor of 2 Long Street.[5] The Home Office's evidence guide says flight bookings add little to a visit application unless you are only passing through.[6] Your money is better spent on proof of income and ties to Cape Town. Our guide for South African passport holders covers the UK visa requirement for South Africans.

Foreign nationals living in Cape Town: what to check
Cape Town has large Zimbabwean, Malawian, Congolese, Nigerian and South Asian communities, and for them the South African permit is the document that decides most files. The Dutch rule is the most precise: a permit needs three or more months left on it once you depart the Schengen area.[2] Germany asks non-South Africans for a permit that lets them back into South Africa, as the Johannesburg page explains.
Take a worked case. Tendai, a Zimbabwean chef in Sea Point, holds a critical-skills permit ending on 31 December. He wants two weeks in Amsterdam in September. Returning on 20 September leaves just over three months, which meets the Dutch minimum, but only just. If the trip slipped into October he would fall short. He applies early, keeps the dates tight, and keeps the reservation's return leg landing at CPT, because Cape Town is where his job is.
Nationality can also bring rules a reservation cannot touch. The US has partially or fully restricted visas for nationals of a long list of countries since January 2026, and living in Cape Town does not change your nationality's position.[11] Check that first. Our guide for African passport holders looks at the nationality side.
Which routes from CPT look natural on a reservation?
Cape Town International has a decent long-haul network, so a reservation can often start and end at CPT without a detour through Johannesburg. Emirates' Cape Town page lists onward flights via Dubai to Frankfurt, London, Brussels, Munich, Hamburg, Zurich and Amsterdam, among others.[12] A CPT–Dubai–Brussels itinerary is ordinary for a Belgian file, and CPT–Dubai–Amsterdam for a Dutch one.
Other patterns we see: a domestic leg to Johannesburg followed by a long-haul flight, which is fine if that is your real plan, and Indian Ocean routings such as Air Mauritius, which lists Cape Town among its destinations.[13] Whatever you choose, check whether a connection needs a transit visa for your passport. A Gulf or European connection can mean a visa that a South African citizen would not need but a Zimbabwean or Pakistani resident might.

Example: a Stellenbosch couple's trip to Belgium
Lerato and Pieter, both South African, teach in Stellenbosch and want twelve days in Belgium and two in the Netherlands over the July school holidays. Belgium is the main destination, and they live in the Western Cape, so TLScontact Cape Town handles both files.[4]
Their appointment is on 19 May. We'd suggest they order one reservation for both names on 15 or 16 May: CPT to Brussels via Dubai on 28 June, then Amsterdam back to CPT on 12 July. The hotel bookings in Ghent and Amsterdam, the insurance and the school's leave letters match those dates exactly. They take a card to the centre, since cash is not accepted there.[4] If the TLS checklist they download asks for something stronger than a reservation, they follow the checklist.
How to order a reservation from Cape Town
- Work out your main destination and which centre serves the Western Cape for it.
- Get the checklist for that country and study exactly how its flight line is phrased.
- Enter the trip on our booking page, usually from CPT, with your form's dates.
- Type every name as on the passport, including children.
- Pay $9 per passenger by card.
- Watch for our email; ten minutes is typical.
- Open the reservation on the airline's website; this guide covers each step.
Orders can be followed on the tracking page. If the Belgian or Dutch list also wants accommodation proof, we offer hotel reservations too, and our price page shows the rate in each currency.
When should you order before a Cape Town appointment?
A few days before it. Expect it to stay live for a maximum of 14 days, with the airline fixing the exact cut-off, sometimes sooner. Plenty of Cape Town families plan around the winter school holidays or the December break, book a slot months out, and are tempted to order the reservation at the same moment. Don't. Book the slot early, and the reservation late. If the centre reschedules you, order a new one for the new date.
Cape Town mistakes we would avoid
- Applying to the Netherlands when most nights are in Belgium.
- Arriving at TLS with cash for Belgian fees.
- Permit validity too short for the Dutch three-month rule.
- A return leg that ends outside Cape Town without explanation.
- Edited or generated PDFs that the airline cannot find.
Cape Town FAQ
Do I have to travel to Gauteng for a Schengen appointment?
Not for the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium; all three take files in Cape Town. The Dutch use VFS Global there, and Germany and Belgium use TLScontact. Belgium specifically assigns Western, Eastern and Northern Cape residents to its Cape Town or Port Elizabeth centres. Check other Schengen countries on their own official pages before booking.
Where is the UK visa centre in Cape Town?
According to VFS Global's October 2024 launch announcement, the UK visa application centre is on the 9th floor of 2 Long Street, Cape Town 8001. VFS took over UK services in South Africa on 22 October 2024. Optional extras offered there do not affect processing times or decisions.
Is the US consulate in Cape Town still issuing visas?
Yes. The US mission in South Africa says visas are issued at its consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and Durban stopped routine visa services from 1 August 2026. New appointments are released on Thursday afternoons. Do not buy a flight before the visa is granted.
Does the Netherlands accept a reservation from Cape Town?
The Dutch list wants your travel plans shown, either as a booking in your own name for the Schengen entry and exit or as some other document, and it does not require you to pay for a ticket. Our reservation provides exactly that, though the decision stays with the embassy, which may request further papers.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Cape Town?
No. We are online only, with no shop or desk in the Western Cape. Book through the website and pay $9 for every passenger by card; expect the PDF by email, usually inside ten minutes. Support is available on WhatsApp and email.
How long will my Cape Town reservation last?
Fourteen days at the very most, and the carrier may choose fewer. Order it in the final days before the appointment rather than on the day you secure it. If the appointment moves or the consulate asks for current flight details later, order a new reservation at that point.
Can I board at CPT with the reservation?
You can't. The airline holds the seat under a genuine reference, but nobody has paid for it, so the CPT check-in desk will refuse it. Once approved, book and pay for a fare inside the visa's validity. You can use the same route or choose another.
Get your Cape Town reservation
Online only, $9 a head, and searchable on the carrier's own site.
A fair reminder: a flight reservation shows your plan; it is neither a ticket nor any assurance that a visa follows. The consulate decides on the file, and the airline decides at the gate.
