Indonesia is the rare long-haul-feeling holiday that needs almost no paperwork from Indian travellers. There is no embassy appointment to book. You either apply for the electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) online before you fly, or buy the visa on arrival at the airport. What you cannot skip is the travel plan out of the country: Indonesian immigration names a return or onward ticket as a basic requirement. This guide focuses on choosing the right visa and preparing the application. Airline checks, ferry exits and what happens if you are stopped are covered in our Bali and Indonesia onward ticket guide.

Who can use Indonesia's e-VOA and visa on arrival?
The e-VOA is open to citizens of the countries on Imigrasi's published list, and India is one of them, alongside the United States, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and many others.[1] If your passport is on the list, you can apply online before you fly, or get the visa on arrival at designated immigration checkpoints.
Some nationalities can visit visa-free instead. Imigrasi sets the same two conditions for them: six months of passport validity and a way out of Indonesia on a return or onward ticket.[1] If you are not sure which group you fall into, the official e-Visa portal asks for your passport country and the purpose of your visit and shows what is available.[2]
British travellers, for comparison, are told they must have a visa and can get the 30-day VOA.[3] So the e-VOA route is a common one for long-haul visitors, not just for Indians.
e-VOA, visa on arrival, or a 60-day visa: which suits you?
For a typical week or two in Bali, the e-VOA is our pick. You get the approval before you leave home, so there is no queue at the counter and no doubt about whether you will be let in on a visa. The paper VOA bought at the airport works too, but you take your chances with queues.
Stay longer than 30 days, or come and go? Look at the online visas instead. GOV.UK notes that the online options include multiple-entry visas and 60-day visas.[3] A 30-day VOA can be extended once, but only from inside Indonesia and only if you do it before the first 30 days end.[3]
| Option | Where you get it | Stay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| e-VOA | Online, before travel[1] | 30 days, one extension of 30 days[3] | Holidays up to a month, people who want approval in hand |
| Visa on arrival | Immigration checkpoints at main airports and seaports[3] | 30 days, one extension of 30 days[3] | Short trips, if you accept queue risk |
| Online visit visa (60-day, multiple-entry) | Official e-Visa portal[2] | Up to 60 days, or several entries, by type[3] | Longer stays or repeat visits |
| Visa-free visit | No application, eligible nationalities only[1] | As set for your nationality | Those whose passports qualify |
A note for creators: GOV.UK warns that the VOA is not suitable for influencer work, sponsored social media content or other commercial online content, which may need a different visa.[3] If your Bali trip is partly paid work, pick the visa by purpose, not by price.
Combining Indonesia with Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand
Many Indian travellers fly in via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok and treat Bali as one leg of a bigger loop. That is fine, but each country checks its own rules. Indonesia wants to see travel out of Indonesia; the next country may want its own visa, arrival card or onward booking. Map the whole route on one page before you buy anything, with the date you leave each country. Then buy the tickets in the order the border checks will happen: the flight out of Indonesia first, because that is what the Bali counter will ask for. If Malaysia is on the route, read our Malaysia visa and eVISA guide too, since its rules for Indian passports differ.
What does Indonesian immigration officially require?
Imigrasi's FAQ gives three short lists, one per route.[1]
- e-VOA: original passport valid at least six months; "Return ticket or onward ticket", the onward one taking you to another country.
- Visa on arrival: six months of passport validity, and travel out by return or onward ticket (crew joining a ship are excepted).
- Visa-free visit: the same six months of validity, with a ticket home or to a third country.
For online visa applications, the FAQ adds the upload rules. You need a scan of the passport biodata page, valid six months from your arrival date, and a passport-size photo, each as JPG, JPEG or PNG and no larger than 200 KB.[1] That file-size limit catches a lot of people using phone photos. Resize before you start.
GOV.UK adds a practical point: your passport must meet Indonesia's entry requirements, and to get a VOA you must be able to prove how you will leave.[3] In other words, the officer can ask to see it.
What does "return ticket or onward ticket" mean for you?
Every Indonesian route above names a ticket. That is plain language, and we take it at face value: a held flight reservation falls short of that word, and an officer or airline agent applying the rule may well say no.
Our honest advice for an Indian traveller heading to Bali: buy the real return flight before you fly. Compare the price of a changeable fare with a basic one; the gap is often worth paying for peace of mind. If you are travelling on to another country, buy that onward ticket, whether by air or, where your route allows, by sea.
Where does a reservation fit, then? Mostly before the trip. Say you are planning Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali over 25 days and need to share firm dates with your employer for leave, or a later stop on your route needs a visa that asks for flight details. Reserving lets you settle the plan and show it, then you buy the real tickets once leave and visas are in place. We explain how airlines treat reservations at the Bali check-in counter, and the ferry question, in the Indonesia onward ticket guide, so we won't repeat it here.
Be careful with "return" flights inside Indonesia. A Bali to Jakarta flight keeps you in the country. What officials want to see is travel out of Indonesia, to home or another country.

How to apply for the Indonesia e-VOA, step by step
- Use only the official portal. GOV.UK warns that visa scams are increasing and tells travellers to use the Indonesian immigration website to get or extend a visa.[3] The official address ends in imigrasi.go.id.[2]
- Pick your passport country and purpose on the e-Visa portal's visa selection page; it lists the visas open to you.[2]
- Prepare uploads: biodata page and photo, each under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG.[1]
- Apply at least a week before departure and make sure approval arrives before you land. A visa approved after you enter is not valid.[3]
- Pay online. If payment fails, Imigrasi suggests checking your card limit and payment type first.[1]
- Buy your return or onward ticket. Carry it offline as well as on your phone.
- Fill in the All Indonesia arrival card in the 72 hours before landing. It is free; avoid sites that charge for it.[3][4]
- If you are going to Bali, pay the provincial tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah online or on arrival.[3]
If your e-VOA account will not activate, Imigrasi asks you to use the live chat or email its contact address with your name, passport number, transaction number and proof of payment.[1]
How long can you stay, and what if you need more time?
The VOA gives 30 days. You get one extension of a further 30 days, either at an Indonesian immigration office or, for online applicants, through the portal.[3] Do it inside the first 30 days. Missing the window turns into an overstay, and the fine is one million rupiah a day.[3]
A worked example: you land in Denpasar on 1 March on an e-VOA. Day 30 is 30 March. If you decide on 20 March that you want two more weeks in Lombok, apply for the extension straight away. Then change your onward flight date to fit the new permitted stay, and keep the updated ticket with you.
Overstaying is not just a fine. GOV.UK says using the wrong visa or overstaying can lead to prosecution, detention and deportation at your own cost.[3] Treat your exit date as fixed unless you have extended properly.
Arriving in Bali or Jakarta: what to have ready
- Passport with at least six months left from your arrival date.[1]
- e-VOA approval, or cash or card for the 500,000 rupiah VOA.[3]
- Return or onward ticket out of Indonesia.[1]
- All Indonesia arrival card completed.[4]
- For Bali, the tourist levy paid or ready to pay.[3]
- Hotel address for at least your first nights.
Families should prepare one set per traveller. Each person, including children, needs their own visa and their own ticket in their own name. Our onward ticket guide covers couples and family bookings in more detail. For how airline staff and immigration officers differ in what they check, see check-in versus immigration checks and, if you have been turned away before, denied boarding without an onward ticket.
Mistakes that cause trouble at Indonesian airports
- Paying a lookalike visa website instead of the official imigrasi.go.id portal.
- Applying the night before and landing before approval.
- Uploading a passport scan over the 200 KB limit and assuming it went through.
- Showing a domestic Indonesian flight as the "return".
- Letting the 30 days run out before asking for an extension.
- Doing paid content work on a VOA.
Planning tools: where a reservation helps
Our product is a held airline booking, made in your name, whose PNR you can open on the airline's own site. No fare has been paid, so boarding with it is impossible. Since Indonesia's rules say "ticket", use it at the planning stage or for another country's visa on a longer route, and carry a real ticket when you arrive in Indonesia.
Cost is per traveller, the same whether one way or return; on multi-city plans, each pair of legs is charged as one. After a UPI, card or netbanking payment through Razorpay, the PDF arrives by email within about 10 minutes; track it here. The booking form shows the hold length up front. Useful pages: prices, our home page, verifying a PNR, and hotel reservations.

Indonesia e-VOA and tourist visa: frequently asked questions
Is the Indonesia e-VOA available to Indian passport holders?
Yes. India appears on the e-VOA country list published by Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration. You apply on the official e-Visa portal before travel, upload your passport page and photo, and pay online. Approval must come through before you land, so leave at least a week.
How much does the Indonesia visa on arrival cost?
GOV.UK lists the VOA at 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, payable by cash or card, valid for a single entry. The official portal shows the amount for your visa type when you pay. If you visit Bali, budget separately for the 150,000 rupiah provincial tourist levy, which is not part of the visa fee.
Do I need a return ticket for the Indonesia e-VOA?
Yes. Imigrasi names a ticket home, or onward to a third country, among the requirements for the e-VOA, the VOA and visa-free visits. Since a held reservation is no ticket, it may fall short here. Buy a real return or onward fare, ideally a changeable one if your dates might move.
Can I extend a 30-day e-VOA in Bali?
Yes, once, for another 30 days. You can extend at an immigration office in Indonesia, or online if you applied online. Do it before the first 30 days end; overstaying costs one million rupiah per day and can lead to deportation. Update your outbound flight to match the new date.
What size should my photo and passport scan be?
Imigrasi asks for the passport biodata page and a passport-size photo in JPG, JPEG or PNG format, each no larger than 200 KB. The passport must be valid at least six months from your arrival date. Compress phone photos before uploading, and check the preview to make sure the text is readable.
Which visa do I need to stay two months in Indonesia?
You have two routes. Take a 30-day VOA or e-VOA and extend it once inside Indonesia, or apply online in advance for a longer visit visa; GOV.UK notes 60-day and multiple-entry options on the official portal. Pick by your purpose of visit, since paid or commercial work needs a different visa.
Is the All Indonesia arrival card the same as the visa?
No. The arrival card is a free customs and health declaration completed online within 72 hours before arrival. It does not replace the visa. You need both: the e-VOA or VOA for permission to enter, and the arrival card as your declaration. Avoid any website asking for payment for the card.
