Japan splits travellers into two very different groups, and the onward ticket question looks different for each. If your passport is on Japan's visa exemption list, you buy a flight and turn up; the check happens at the airport. If it is not (Indian passports, for example), the check starts months earlier, at the visa counter, with a document list that asks for flight details. This guide takes each group in turn, using what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), an Embassy of Japan and the VFS checklist in India actually say. For the general picture across countries, start with our onward ticket overview.
Japan onward ticket: key facts
| Topic | Official position |
|---|---|
| Who can visit visa-free? | Nationals of the 74 countries and regions on MOFA's visa exemption list.[1] |
| How long? | 90 days for most; 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand; 30 days for Brunei and Qatar.[1] |
| Return ticket for visa-free visitors | Carry "a fixed-date, confirmed return ticket (E-tickets are also accepted) or onward journey ticket" to the landing examination.[2] |
| Flights for visa applicants (India, VFS) | "Itinerary with the flight/ship number and date of arrival and departure to and from Japan."[4] |
| eVISA | Single-entry tourist eVISA of up to 90 days for residents of listed countries; India applies through an accredited agency.[3] |
| Is entry guaranteed? | No. Permission to enter remains at the discretion of the immigration authority, even with a valid visa.[2] |
| Arrival forms online | Visit Japan Web lets you register immigration and customs details in advance and show a 2D code.[5] |
Do visa-free visitors need a return ticket for Japan?
Yes, you should carry one. The Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands lists three things to bring to the landing examination at passport control: a valid passport, "a fixed-date, confirmed return ticket (E-tickets are also accepted) or onward journey ticket", and documents about your itinerary, such as hotel reservations, together with proof of sufficient funds.[2] It adds that permission to enter remains at the immigration authority's discretion, with no guarantee of landing permission.[2]
Read that wording carefully, because it is stricter than most countries. "Fixed-date" rules out an open return. "Confirmed" and the mention of e-tickets point towards a ticket that has actually been issued. A held reservation may not satisfy this. If you are visa-exempt and flying in one way, we would buy a real ticket out (a cheap one, or a refundable one) rather than rely on a reservation.
That Embassy page is written for travellers from the Netherlands, but the landing examination is the same at every Japanese airport. The other details depend on your passport:
- Stay length: 90 days for most exempt nationalities, 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, 30 for Brunei and Qatar.[1] Your exit date needs to sit inside that.
- Passport type: several exemptions apply only to ICAO-compliant ePassports, including those for Thailand, the UAE, Brazil and Serbia. Malaysians without an ePassport are advised to get a visa first, or face strict examination.[1]
- Registration: Indonesian and Qatari nationals must register their ePassport with a Japanese mission before travelling visa-free.[1]
What do Japanese visa applications ask for?
For people who need a visa, the flight question comes up first at the application. The VFS Global checklist for the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata is a good example of how detailed it gets. For a tourist visa it asks for a day-to-day itinerary or schedule of stay, a hotel reservation ("booking only- not confirmed"), and an "Itinerary with the flight/ship number and date of arrival and departure to and from Japan."[4] It also asks for three years of personal ITRs, six months of bank statements and a leave letter from your employer.
Notice what is not there: a paid ticket. The checklist wants a flight number and dates, which is exactly what a flight reservation shows. It even says the hotel should be a booking that is not confirmed. That makes sense, because you should not commit money before a visa decision. The same checklist notes you can apply 89 days before travel, with a minimum processing time of five working days.[4]
Two other lines are worth flagging. If you visit a third country before or after Japan, the checklist wants a copy of that country's visa. And it warns that hiding the proper reason for travel can lead to refusal.[4] Our view: a reservation is fine for the file, but describe it as a flight reservation or itinerary, never as a purchased ticket.
Transit visas are different. The same Kolkata checklist lists "Air Tickets" for a transit visa, plus the visa for your main destination.[4] If that is your situation, read the wording on your own centre's list and ask VFS if you are unsure what they will accept.
eVISA or visa sticker?
As of 15 May 2026, MOFA's eVISA system covers short-term tourist visas of up to 90 days, single entry. Residents of Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the UK and the USA apply directly online. Residents of India, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and the UAE apply through an accredited agency.[3] One practical point that catches people out: on travel day you must display the "Visa issuance notice" online at the airport. MOFA says a PDF, screenshot or printed copy will not be accepted.[3] Make sure your phone has data when you check in.
A visa gets you to the border; it does not replace the landing examination. Once you land, expect the same sort of questions a visa-free traveller might face. Our Japan visa reservation guide covers the application file in more detail.
Who checks your ticket for Japan, and when?
| Stage | Applies to | Who checks | What they want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa application | Nationalities not on the exemption list | Japanese consulate, through VFS or an accredited agency | Itinerary with flight numbers and dates; schedule of stay; funds[4] |
| Airline check-in | Everyone | Check-in agent using IATA Timatic | Passport, visa or eVISA notice, and possibly a ticket out |
| Landing examination | Everyone | Immigration officer at the airport | Passport, return or onward ticket, itinerary, funds[2] |
Check-in agents look up entry rules in Timatic, the IATA database used by airlines, ground handlers and government officials. IATA describes proper document checks as a way for airlines to avoid immigration fines.[6] In plain terms, the airline does not want to fly back a passenger Japan turns away, so a one-way traveller may well be asked how they will leave.
At the landing examination, many visitors are simply stamped through. But the officer is entitled to ask for the documents above, and your answers should match. Japan is a country where a calm, consistent story (hotel, dates, exit flight, money) goes a long way.
What counts as an onward ticket for Japan?
- A dated return flight to your home country, issued as a ticket. This is the textbook answer.
- A dated flight to a third country, with that country's visa if you need one.
- A ferry ticket out of Japan. The Kolkata checklist mentions a ship number as well as flights, and international ferries run to Busan and Shanghai.[3][4]
- A flight reservation with a live PNR: right for a visa application, which asks for an itinerary. For a visa-free landing it may fall short of a "confirmed" ticket.
An example. Say you are a UK citizen landing at Narita on 2 March with a one-way fare and a plan to finish in Osaka and fly to Seoul. A dated, issued Osaka to Seoul ticket inside your 90 days ticks every box. A reservation for the same flight shows the plan, but if the officer asks whether it has been paid, the honest answer is no. That is the gap.
Visit Japan Web and arrival paperwork
Visit Japan Web is the Digital Agency's online service for arrival procedures. You register your immigration and customs details in advance and present a 2D code at the airport. You can register from a computer, but you will need a smartphone or tablet to show the code.[5] It also handles tax-free shopping registration for foreign visitors.
It does not ask you to upload a ticket, and it is not a travel authorisation. Fill in your hotel and flight details accurately, because they are part of the same picture the officer sees. Use only the official service; the Digital Agency itself has warned about suspicious lookalike apps.[5]
What if the airline refuses to board you for Japan?
If the agent is not satisfied, you do not fly on that departure. In practice the fix is usually one of these, done on the spot:
- Buy an issued ticket out of Japan there and then, often at a high last-minute fare.
- Buy a refundable fare and cancel it after you land, provided your card limit allows it.
- Rebook a later flight and pay whatever your fare's change rules require.
For eVISA holders there is an extra trap: no data connection means no visa issuance notice on screen, and a screenshot will not do.[3] Sort out roaming or airport Wi-Fi before you queue.
Your options for a Japan exit, compared
| Option | Upfront cost | Issued ticket? | Fits a visa file? | Fits a visa-free landing? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verifiable reservation (live PNR) | From ₹699 or $9 each | No | Yes: shows flight numbers and dates | May not meet "fixed-date, confirmed" wording |
| Fully refundable fare | Full fare, refunded under fare rules | Yes | Yes, but money tied up before a decision | Yes |
| Cheap ticket you may use | A low-cost flight or ferry to Korea | Yes | Possible, though buying before approval is risky | Yes |
| Airline paid hold | Fee set by the airline, where sold | No, until paid | Often fine for an itinerary | Same gap as a reservation |
So our honest advice splits in two. Applying for a visa? Use a verifiable reservation for the file, and buy your real ticket once the visa is granted. Visa-exempt and arriving one way? Buy a real exit ticket, ideally one you might use or one that is refundable. Our comparison of reservations, refundable fares and hold fares walks through the costs.
Step by step: sorting out your Japan exit
- Find your category. Check whether your passport is on MOFA's exemption list, and for how many days.[1]
- If you need a visa, check whether you go through eVISA, an accredited agency or VFS, and download your centre's current checklist.[3][4]
- Build the itinerary. Fix arrival and departure flights, and make the hotel nights and day-by-day plan match them.
- Choose the right document. A reservation for the visa file; an issued ticket for a visa-free landing.
- Verify it. Look up the PNR on the airline's "Manage booking" page. Our verification walkthrough shows each screen.
- Register on Visit Japan Web before you fly, and keep the 2D code on your phone.[5]
- Carry proof of funds and hotel details for the landing examination.[2]
How our reservation fits a Japan application
Our reservations carry your name, a live PNR, and the flight numbers and dates that the VFS checklist mentions. The booking can be pulled up on the airline's site. It is a reservation, not a ticket, so it cannot be used to fly.
That is per passenger, for one way or return; multi-city trips are charged per pair of legs, as set out on the price page. Expect the PDF by email in roughly 10 minutes. Payment is through Razorpay by UPI, card or netbanking, and you can follow an order at order tracking. The hold window for your booking appears before you pay; book shortly before your VFS appointment so it is current on the day. Need a stay on paper too? See our hotel booking service.
For background, read how flight reservations work for visas, our proof of onward travel guide, or the country table in requirements by country. When you're ready, book the reservation or head back to the home page.
No guarantees: the consulate decides your visa and the officer decides your landing. We provide a genuine, checkable booking; we do not promise it will be accepted.
Japan onward ticket: frequently asked questions
Does Japan require a return ticket for visa-free visitors?
Japan does not ask for it in advance, but the landing examination can. An Embassy of Japan advises visa-exempt travellers to carry a fixed-date, confirmed return or onward ticket, along with itinerary documents and proof of funds. Officers do not ask everyone. If you arrive on a one-way fare, carry an issued exit ticket to be safe.
Is a flight reservation enough for a Japan visa application?
For the VFS checklist in Kolkata, the requirement is an itinerary with flight or ship numbers and arrival and departure dates, not a paid ticket. A verifiable reservation shows exactly that. Other centres may word things differently, and transit visas list air tickets, so always read the checklist for your own jurisdiction before the appointment.
Can I enter Japan on a one-way ticket?
You can fly in on one, but you need a credible way out. Airlines may ask for proof at check-in, and the immigration officer can ask at the landing examination. Japan's embassy guidance points to a fixed-date confirmed ticket, so a one-way traveller should buy a real exit flight or ferry before departure.
Do I need to show my ticket on Visit Japan Web?
No. Visit Japan Web is for registering immigration and customs details in advance so you can show a 2D code on arrival. It does not replace any document. Enter your flights and accommodation accurately, because the officer may compare them with the tickets and bookings you carry.
How long can I stay in Japan without a visa?
MOFA lists a period of stay of 90 days for most of the 74 exempt countries and regions, 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, and 30 days for Brunei and Qatar. Some exemptions only apply to ePassport holders or need prior registration. Your exit ticket must be dated inside your allowance.
Will a dummy ticket get me refused at Japanese immigration?
A genuine reservation is not a forged document, but it is also not an issued ticket. If an officer asks for a confirmed return and you show a reservation, you may face more questions or a refusal. Never call a reservation a paid ticket. For visa-free landings, an issued ticket is the safer choice.
Do eVISA holders need an onward ticket too?
Your eVISA gets you to the landing examination; it does not skip it. Expect the same questions about your return, hotel and money that any visitor may face. Also remember MOFA's rule that the visa issuance notice must be shown online at the airport, not as a screenshot or printout.
