Al Khobar sits at the heart of the Eastern Province's expatriate life. Engineers on Aramco and petrochemical contracts, hospital staff, teachers, retail managers and their families live between Khobar, Dhahran, Thuqbah and Dammam, and most of them hold an iqama rather than a Saudi passport. That shapes almost everything about a visa application from here: where you can file, what the checklist wants to see about your residence, and how your flight dates must sit inside your exit and re-entry visa. This guide covers the official arrangements for Khobar residents, the exact flight wording we could confirm, and where a SAR 34 reservation from us fits. We work online only, with no branch in Khobar or anywhere in Saudi Arabia.

Where can a Khobar resident file a visa application?
For several Schengen countries, you can stay in the Eastern Province. The Dutch government lists four VFS locations in Saudi Arabia, two of them on your doorstep: Al Khobar and Dhahran.[1] Italy's embassy names visa application centres in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, run by Almaviva and VF Worldwide.[3] Sweden's embassy says it works with VFS Global offices in the same three cities, and that you both submit and collect the decision at VFS.[4]
| Destination | Nearest desk for a Khobar resident | Flight wording we could confirm | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | VFS Al Khobar or Dhahran[1] | Reservation in your name; "You do not need a paid travel ticket"[2] | Held reservation |
| Portugal | VFS (KSA checklist)[5] | "Flight/travel reservations, including return flight"[5] | Held reservation with the return leg |
| Italy | Dammam visa application centre[3] | Documents listed on the centre's own site | Follow that list exactly |
| Sweden | VFS Dammam[4] | Per the VFS checklist for your purpose | Reservation, unless told otherwise |
| United States | Not available in Saudi Arabia for routine visas[6] | Don't buy tickets before the visa[12] | No booking needed |
| United Kingdom | Online, then VFS biometrics[8] | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" rated less useful[9] | Usually skip it |
Notice the pattern. The Dutch and Portuguese wording both ask for a reservation rather than a purchase. If a checklist handed to you at a Khobar or Dammam centre instead says "confirmed" or "paid", treat that as binding; a held reservation may not meet it, and a refundable fare is the safer buy.
What do the checklists say about your iqama?
Residence papers, not flights, are what trip up Khobar files most. The Portugal checklist used at VFS in Saudi Arabia lists two extra items for non-Saudi applicants:[5]
- Iqama: the original plus one copy, "valid at least 3 months after the planned return".
- Re-entry visa: the Saudi re-entry visa plus one copy, "valid beyond the intended return from Schengen".
Both rules tie directly to your flight dates. Say your iqama expires on 20 February and you plan to come back from Lisbon on 10 January. That leaves only about six weeks, short of the three months the checklist asks for. Renew first, then apply. Likewise, the return date on your reservation must fall inside the validity of your exit and re-entry visa.
The same Portuguese list wants non-Saudis to show six months of original bank statements, stamped if printed online, and a letter from the employer or sponsor in the Kingdom attested by the Chamber of Commerce.[5] Saudi nationals are asked for three months of statements instead.[5] This VFS-hosted PDF is an older document, and one line about applying no earlier than three months ahead conflicts with the current EU six-month rule, so confirm the live version at the centre.[5][10]
The Netherlands adds a residence rule of its own: you can submit at its Saudi locations only if you live in Saudi Arabia.[1] Someone visiting a relative in Khobar on a short visit visa must apply in their own country of residence.

SAR 34 a head, card checkout, and the PDF lands in your inbox in roughly ten minutes.
What about a US visa from the Eastern Province?
The US Consulate General in Dhahran is a short drive from Khobar, but at present it does not help with routine visas. The US mission's visa page says the embassy in Riyadh and the consulates in Dhahran and Jeddah are open, yet routine visa processing is not available in Saudi Arabia, and updates will be posted when that changes.[6] Its suggestion is to book the interview where you hold residence or citizenship elsewhere.[6]
For a Khobar expat that usually means applying at home during annual leave, or in another country where you can get an appointment. Either way, the US does not ask for a flight booking. Washington's visitor page says to wait for the visa before purchasing travel.[12] That page also carries a notice on Presidential Proclamation 10998; since 1 January 2026 it has limited visas for 39 nationalities, and you should see whether yours is one.[6]
UK visitor visas from Khobar
You apply online and then book biometrics through VFS Global, which GOV.UK's centre finder lists for Saudi Arabia.[8] Check the VFS page for the centre nearest you before you pay for a slot.
As for flights, we would leave them out. The Home Office's guide places "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among documents of limited value in a visit application.[9] Your iqama, salary certificate, bank statements and the reason you will come back to your job in Khobar carry far more weight. Saudi citizens should check gov.uk for their own entry route, which differs from that of expatriate residents.
A note for Indian residents of Khobar
Plenty of Khobar residents carry Indian passports, and an ageing passport can derail a trip faster than any flight document. The Embassy of India lists an Indian Passport and Visa Application Centre in Al Khobar: 2nd Floor, Al Katheery Centre, opposite SABB Bank, Al Rakha, operated by VFS Global.[7] It handles passport applications, visa submissions and attestation, with passport submissions from 08:30 to 15:00, Sunday to Thursday.[7]
Most Schengen lists want a passport issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages and validity well beyond your return.[5] If yours is close to any of those limits, renew it at the Khobar IPVAC before you book a VFS slot. For more, read what we wrote for Indians living in the Gulf.
Flights from King Fahd International (DMM)
Khobar residents normally fly from King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. For a visa itinerary, a one-stop route through a Gulf hub is the most natural shape. Qatar Airways, for example, publishes booking pages for flights from Dammam (DMM) to Doha, with onward connections to Europe and Asia.[11] Whatever carrier you pick, confirm the current schedule on its own website first.
Some Eastern Province families cross the King Fahd Causeway and fly from Bahrain instead. If that is genuinely how you will travel, a reservation from Bahrain is fine; a line in the cover letter explaining the Bahrain start is all it takes. Remember that a Bahrain departure still has to fit your Saudi exit and re-entry dates.

Example: a Filipino nurse in Khobar visiting Amsterdam
A Filipino nurse working at a Khobar hospital wants ten days in the Netherlands in April. She lives in Saudi Arabia, so she can apply at VFS in Al Khobar.[1] Her iqama runs to December and her employer has agreed to an exit and re-entry visa covering the trip, so both residence items line up.
Three days before her VFS slot, she orders a reservation: Dammam to Amsterdam via Doha, returning to Dammam ten days later. The Dutch checklist asks for a reservation in her name and says no paid ticket is needed.[2] Her hotel booking, insurance and hospital leave letter carry the same dates. Once the visa is issued she buys her actual ticket.
Example: a Pakistani engineer and his family touring Portugal
Now an engineer from Pakistan, living in Dhahran with his wife and two children, planning two weeks in Portugal. The Portugal KSA checklist asks for flight reservations including the return flight, an iqama valid three months past the return, and a re-entry visa valid beyond it.[5]
He orders one reservation with all four names, spelt exactly as in their passports. Each family member's iqama and re-entry visa is checked against the return date before the appointment. The list also calls for an employer letter with Chamber of Commerce attestation, so he asks HR for it two weeks ahead.[5] The reservation itself is the last thing he orders, so its hold covers the appointment.
What to bring to a VFS appointment in Khobar or Dhahran
VFS staff check documents against a list, so bring the list itself, ticked off, and every item in the order it gives. For the flight part, one clean printout of the reservation per application is enough, with each traveller's name readable. Keep the PNR and airline written on a sticky note inside your folder in case you are asked.
Expats should add the residence items that the Portuguese KSA list spells out: the original iqama with a copy, and the re-entry visa with a copy.[5] Arabic-language documents need translation into English or the destination's language under that same list.[5] On the morning of the slot, look up the booking once on the airline's website from your phone. If the hold has gone, you can still fix it before you queue.

When should a Khobar applicant order?
A few days before the VFS appointment. Holds last a fortnight at most; each airline chooses the real duration, and it can be shorter. Sweden quotes 15 days of processing from Saudi Arabia, and the EU's general guide gives 15 days, extendable to 45.[4][10] If you order on the day you book the appointment, three weeks ahead, the hold may lapse before anyone looks at it.
Brussels allows a six-month lead time and asks for a minimum of 15 days before departure.[10] Pre-summer slots can be hard to get, so secure the appointment early and leave the reservation until near the date.
What to avoid
- An iqama that expires within three months of your return.
- A return date outside your exit and re-entry visa.
- Driving to Riyadh when Al Khobar, Dhahran or Dammam handles your destination.
- Edited PDFs. A booking the airline cannot find is worse than none.
- Booking a US interview slot in Dhahran while routine processing is unavailable in Saudi Arabia.[6]
Khobar FAQ
Can I apply for a Netherlands visa in Al Khobar?
Yes, if you live in Saudi Arabia. The Dutch government lists VFS Global centres in Al Khobar, Dhahran, Jeddah and Riyadh. For tourism it wants a booking in your name or other evidence of your travel plans, and it confirms you need not have paid for a ticket. Short-term visitors to the Kingdom must apply in their own country of residence.
How much iqama validity should a Khobar applicant have left?
Portugal's KSA list sets the bar at three months of iqama validity after you come back, and a re-entry visa that outlasts the return date. Other Schengen countries publish their own lists, but a three-month margin is a sensible minimum to aim for. Renew before applying if you are close.
Can I get a US visa interview in Dhahran?
Not for routine visas at the moment. Right now the US mission in the Kingdom offers no routine visa processing, and it points applicants to their country of residence or nationality instead. Watch its visa page for updates. No flight reservation is needed for a US interview in any case.
How do I pay SAR 34 from Saudi Arabia?
Online, with a debit or credit card, through our Razorpay checkout. SAR 34 covers one passenger for a one-way or return reservation; every two legs of a multi-city trip cost the same again. There is no cash payment because we have no office in Khobar or elsewhere in the Kingdom.
Can my reservation start in Bahrain instead of Dammam?
Yes, if that is how you actually plan to travel. Some Eastern Province residents prefer Bahrain's airport across the causeway. Say so in a sentence of the cover letter and keep the dates within your exit and re-entry visa.
Is the reservation a ticket I can fly on?
No. A real PNR holds the seat. Still, with no fare paid, the desk at DMM will refuse to check you in. Buy your actual ticket after the visa is granted, on dates the visa covers.
What if my VFS appointment is rescheduled?
Check whether the PNR still shows on the airline's site. Holds last up to 2 weeks, sometimes less. When the revised slot is beyond the hold, buy a replacement booking shortly before it.
