Sweden handles visas a little differently from most Schengen states. The rules come from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), the checklists are issued for the Embassy through VFS Global, and the Agency sets a daily money figure in kronor that you must be able to cover. On flights, the Agency's own page does not mention tickets for visa applicants at all; it asks you to show that you intend to leave Schengen before your visa expires. The Indian checklist turns that into a "flight reservation of return ticket", and the UAE and Saudi lists accept a reservation too. This guide quotes each source, explains where your reservation fits into the bigger picture of proving you will return, and covers fees and timing. Anything common to all 29 member states is covered by our Schengen visa flight reservation guide.
Sweden visa key facts for 2026
| Subject | Sweden's official position |
|---|---|
| Flight wording, India | "Flight reservation of return ticket", plus intra-Schengen legs if you visit several states.[4] |
| Migration Agency, visa applicants | You must show you intend to leave Sweden and Schengen by the last day of the visa's validity.[3] |
| Flight wording, UAE | "Copy of flight ticket or flight reservations", which "must include return flight".[6] |
| Money | SEK 700 for each day of the visit, lower in some cases.[3] |
| Visa fee | EU rate of €90 per adult; €45 between ages 6 and 12.[1] The VFS service charge comes on top.[5] |
| Processing, India | 15 calendar days from when the file reaches the Embassy in New Delhi; two extra days for postal transfer from other centres.[5] |
| Insurance | At least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries, covering arrival and departure dates.[4] |
Who needs a Schengen visa for Sweden?
Indian citizens do, for any short visit. The Migration Agency's rule is simple: if your country's citizens need an entry visa for Sweden and the Schengen area, you must have one to visit for up to 90 days.[3] The same applies to most Gulf residents who carry South Asian, Southeast Asian or African passports.
You do not need a Swedish visa if you hold a residence permit for another Schengen country or are a citizen of a visa-exempt country. Even then, the Agency lists what the border police will check, and one item is directly about flights: "a valid round-trip ticket with a return journey within 90 days".[3] That rule is about arriving without a visa. It is not the visa checklist, and at that point you should be travelling on a ticket you have paid for.
What the Swedish Migration Agency says about your return
For tourist, family and business visas alike, the Agency's preparation list contains the same line: "You must show that you intend to leave Sweden and the Schengen area no later than the last day of your entry visa's period of validity."[3]
Notice that it asks for intent, not a specific document. A round-trip flight reservation is the most direct evidence of a planned departure date, but it is only part of the case. Your job, studies, family and money at home carry the rest. The Agency also says the exact documents depend on where you apply, and tells applicants to check the website of the correct embassy for the list.[3] That is where the flight wording becomes concrete.
Money is the other Swedish twist. The Agency asks for SEK 700 per day, which can be lower for young children, for prepaid meals and lodging, or when you stay with relatives or friends; a host can also promise to cover your costs.[3] For a ten-night trip, that is SEK 7,000 to show in bank statements or a host's undertaking. The Agency also says you need money for your "return journey", which your statement covers; the reservation shows the date.
The Indian checklist's flight line
The tourist checklist used at Swedish visa centres in India, which mentions the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi, lists at item 7: "Flight reservation of return ticket. If travelling to several Schengen states, proof of intra- Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental."[4]
Item 4 links your lodging to the route. Hotel or other accommodation must cover "the entire duration of the planned stay", and if you visit several countries you need proof of the itinerary, "e.g. ticket bookings for transport between different countries in addition to hotel reservations".[4] Item 1 adds that you should "explain your plan for visit" on the form.
Plain answer: Sweden's Indian checklist calls for a reservation of a return ticket. A genuine held booking with a live PNR, matching your form and hotel nights, fits that wording. Buying a fare before the decision is not requested.
The same checklist warns about timing. You acknowledge that if your travel date falls within 15 calendar days of the standard processing time, the Embassy "may not be able to process" the application in time, and it may be rejected or written off.[4] It also says affidavits will not be considered as evidence, so a sworn statement cannot stand in for a missing booking or bank record.
What the Gulf checklists say
We found Swedish VFS checklists for the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Both accept a reservation in so many words:
- UAE, tourism checklist (February 2026): "Copy of flight ticket or flight reservations", which "Must include return flight" and "Should align with the accommodation booking and travel insurance coverage period".[6]
- Saudi Arabia, Sweden/Finland tourist checklist: "Copy of flight/travel reservation/s including details of the itinerary and the flight reservation number."[8]
The UAE line is the most practical instruction in this whole series: your flight, hotel and insurance dates must agree with each other. Saudi Arabia's version wants the booking reference on the page and asks applicants to provide "a detailed travel plan".[8]
For Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, we could not confirm a current Swedish checklist or submission point; the VFS pages we tried did not load a Sweden section. Use the country selector on the Migration Agency's Schengen visa page, which shows where residents of each country apply, and follow the list you are given there.[3] Sweden is represented by other Schengen states in some countries, and those embassies may ask for different documents.[3]
Reservation or purchased ticket: what each source accepts
| Source | Exact words | Held reservation? |
|---|---|---|
| Migration Agency (all visa applicants) | Show you intend to leave by the visa's last day[3] | Yes, as evidence of a planned exit, with ties at home. |
| India checklist | "Flight reservation of return ticket"[4] | Yes. The word used is reservation. |
| UAE checklist | "Flight ticket or flight reservations", return included[6] | Yes, with dates aligned to hotel and insurance. |
| Saudi Arabia checklist | "Flight/travel reservation/s" with the "flight reservation number"[8] | Yes, if the booking code is shown. |
| Border check, visa-exempt travellers | "A valid round-trip ticket with a return journey within 90 days"[3] | No. At the border you should hold your real, paid ticket. |
Where Indian residents apply
Applications are lodged at Swedish visa application centres run by VFS Global and decided by the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi. VFS states that processing is 15 calendar days from the day the application reaches the Embassy, with two more days for files sent on from centres outside New Delhi.[5] If you apply in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Chennai, count those two days.
On fees, the EU sets €90 for adults and €45 for children from 6 to 12.[1] VFS India lists its own service charge of 19 euros on top, payable with the visa fee; both are non-refundable if the visa is refused.[5] The rupee figure changes with exchange rates, so check the VFS page on the day you pay.
If you have given fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last five years, the Migration Agency says a representative can submit your application for you with a power of attorney.[3] Otherwise, plan to attend the appointment yourself.
Is Sweden your main destination?
The Migration Agency is direct about this: if you visit several Schengen countries, apply to the country that is your main destination.[3] EU rules define that by the longest stay or the main purpose, and by first entry when stays are equal.[1]
Scandinavian trips make this tricky. Stockholm four nights, then a ferry to Helsinki for two and Copenhagen for two: Sweden leads with four of eight. Copenhagen three, Oslo three, Stockholm two: Sweden is not the main destination, so the file goes elsewhere. Note that the Saudi checklist is shared with Finland, a sign of how often these two are combined.[8]
When Sweden leads, show the other legs. The Indian list asks for intra-Schengen flights, train itineraries or car rentals, and accommodation in each country.[4] A multi-city or open-jaw reservation can fly you into Stockholm and home from Copenhagen, with the ferry or train shown separately.
What a Sweden reservation should show
- A return flight. India says "return ticket"; the UAE says it "must include return flight".[4][6]
- A departure date inside the visa period you request, since you must show you will leave by its last day.[3]
- The booking code, which the Saudi list calls the "flight reservation number".[8]
- Dates that line up with hotel nights and insurance, as the UAE checklist asks.[6] Our hotel booking for visa fills nights you have not reserved yet.
- Every co-traveller named, because the Indian list asks whether your travel is accompanied and by whom.[4]
- Spellings that match each passport, including children.
Building the flight part of a Swedish file
- Confirm Sweden is the main destination by counting nights.
- Look up where you apply on the Migration Agency's page; in India and the UAE that is VFS Global.
- Work out your money figure: SEK 700 multiplied by the days of your visit.
- Book the VFS appointment and write your plan on the form.
- Reserve the flight a couple of days before submission. The hold period appears on our booking page before you pay.
- Verify the PNR on the airline's "Manage booking" page against the form. The fields worth comparing are listed in our pre-submission checking guide.
- Line up hotel, insurance and flight dates on one sheet before printing.
When to make the reservation
Anything we reserve stays valid for a period of up to two weeks, set by the airline. For Sweden, book two to four days before the VFS visit.
Take a Pune applicant flying to Stockholm on 20 June with a VFS appointment in Mumbai on 22 May. Reserving on 19 or 20 May keeps it live at submission. Add 15 days for the Embassy plus two days of transit from Mumbai and the decision should land well before the trip. If the Embassy asks for an updated booking, rebook the same flights.
The UAE page sets the outer limits: no more than six months before travel and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before.[7] It also says processing can stretch to 45 days in individual cases and that passport return by a set date cannot be guaranteed.[7] In summer, apply early.
Applying for Sweden from the UAE or Saudi Arabia
UAE applicants bring an Emirates ID and residence permit with three months or more left after the Schengen exit date, a recent NOC from your employer showing salary and approved leave dates, three months of bank statements, and a "full travel itinerary" with planned activities.[6] VFS lists the visa fee as AED 365 for adults and AED 183 for children aged 6 to 11, plus a service fee of €35 (AED 149.72) paid in cash.[7] VFS says UAE applications are processed within 15 calendar days from when the "Migration Hub" receives them.[7]
For Saudi Arabia, VFS uses one checklist for both Sweden and Finland. Non-Saudi residents need an Iqama that runs at least three months past the return date, an exit and re-entry visa with exact Gregorian dates, six months of salary-showing bank statements, and an employer letter attested by the Chamber of Commerce.[8] It also states that VFS staff do not assess applications; the Embassy of Sweden decides.[8]
Wherever you live, the round trip should begin and end in your country of residence. For other parts of a Gulf-based file, see our page for Gulf-based Indian expats.
Mistakes that trip up Swedish applications
- Flight, hotel and insurance dates that do not agree, the exact point the UAE list makes.[6]
- Funds below SEK 700 a day for the length of the stay, with no host undertaking.[3]
- An affidavit offered instead of evidence, which the Indian checklist says will not be considered.[4]
- No transport shown between Stockholm and another Schengen city.[4]
- Applying inside 15 days of travel, which can lead to the file being written off.[4]
- A reservation without a visible code on a Saudi file.[8]
Can Swedish officers verify the booking?
Neither the Migration Agency nor the checklists say how flight documents are checked. A genuine PNR can be looked up on the airline's site using the surname, so verification is always possible. A fabricated one fails that test, and under the Visa Code false supporting documents are grounds for refusal.[2] We supply real reservations only and never produce altered or fake tickets.
Sweden visa flight reservation: frequent questions
Does Sweden need a confirmed ticket for a visa from India?
No. The tourist checklist used at Swedish visa centres in India asks for a flight reservation of a return ticket, with intra-Schengen bookings if you visit other countries. The Migration Agency itself only asks you to show you will leave by the visa's last day. Buy the paid ticket after approval.
What daily budget does Sweden expect me to prove?
The Swedish Migration Agency asks for SEK 700 for each day of your visit. The amount can be lower for young children, for prepaid meals and accommodation, or if you stay with family or friends. A host in Sweden can also commit to covering your costs, using the Agency's invitation form.
How long does a Swedish visa take from India?
VFS says 15 calendar days from the day the application reaches the Embassy in New Delhi. Files lodged at other Indian centres take about two more days in transit. Apply well over 15 days before travel; the checklist warns late files may be rejected or written off.
Can I use a reservation for a Sweden visa from Dubai?
Yes. In the UAE, Sweden's tourism list names flight reservations as acceptable, provided the return leg is on them. It adds that the dates should match your accommodation booking and insurance period. You need a UAE residence permit and Emirates ID valid three months after you leave Schengen.
Stockholm and Helsinki on one trip: which country do I apply to?
Apply to the country where you spend the most nights, or which is the main purpose. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Show the ferry or flight between the two cities, plus accommodation in both, in the application.
Will the border police ask for my return ticket?
They can. The Migration Agency says visa-exempt travellers need a valid round-trip ticket with a return within 90 days, and that the border police check entry requirements directly at the border. Visa holders should also carry their real, paid return ticket and bookings when they fly.
Price and booking
Our product is a live airline booking under your name, on your chosen dates and route, whose PNR you can look up yourself. Nobody has paid the airline for that seat, so the gate staff will not board you on it; the booking exists for your visa file.
Pricing is per passenger and the same for single or return journeys. For several stops, each pair of legs is charged once, as shown on dummy ticket price. Razorpay processes the payment, by UPI, card or netbanking. Delivery by email typically takes about ten minutes, and the order tracker shows progress. Thinking of holding a seat with an airline instead? Our page on flight reservation for visa compares the two. Country rules elsewhere are gathered in requirements by country, and visa-free trips needing exit proof are covered under onward ticket.
