Riyadh has the Kingdom's embassies, the biggest cluster of visa centres and a huge resident population from South Asia, the Philippines, Egypt and beyond. It also has some of the most detailed checklists we have read anywhere. The German one in particular spells out what the flight document, the employer letter and the exit and re-entry printout should show. This guide is for people who live in Riyadh or the central region and are heading to Europe, Britain or America. It quotes the official wording, explains the iqama arithmetic, covers King Khalid International Airport and explains when our SAR 34 reservation is worth ordering. Everything happens online; we have no Riyadh office.

What exactly does Germany's Saudi checklist ask for?
Germany is the destination we are asked about most from Riyadh, and its tourist checklist for Saudi Arabia is unusually precise. Under "Flight reservation" it asks for a "Copy of the round trip airline reservation with passenger details and the complete travel itinerary", and it adds that the stay should not exceed 90 days.[2] That is reservation wording. It does not ask you to buy a ticket.
The same list is much stricter about hotels. It warns that hotel bookings might be verified and that applications will be denied for cancelled or fake hotel bookings, even when a travel agent arranged them.[2] In practice that means the hotel booking in your German file has to be real and still in place when the consulate looks. Pick a property with free cancellation, keep the booking live, and do not cancel it while the application is open.
The rest of the German list, for expatriates, reads like this:
- Exit and re-entry visa: an official Absher or Muqeem excerpt in English and Gregorian dates showing "Exit before" and "Return before", plus the iqama expiry.[2]
- Iqama: a photocopy with translation, valid at least three months after the planned return, and copies for family members living in the Kingdom.[2]
- Employer letter: attested by the Chamber of Commerce, with joining date, position, contract duration and salary, plus a GOSI certificate.[2]
- Bank statements: six months of originals stamped by the bank, showing the salary going in.[2]
One more line trips people up: the German mission says documents in Arabic are not accepted and must be in English or translated into German or English.[2] Start the translations early.

Card payment, SAR 34 per head, and a PDF emailed roughly ten minutes on.
Where do Riyadh residents file for each country?
| Destination | Riyadh desk | Flight wording we could confirm | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | TLScontact[1] | Round-trip airline reservation with full itinerary[2] | Held reservation |
| Netherlands | VFS Global[3] | Reservation; no paid ticket needed[4] | Held reservation |
| Spain | Consular office or its visa centre, by appointment[6] | Documents on the purpose and specifics of the stay[6] | Reservation, unless the centre's list says otherwise |
| Italy | Visa application centre[5] | Set out on the centre's website | Follow that list |
| Denmark | VFS, Al Hada[7] | Set out by VFS for your purpose | Reservation, unless told otherwise |
| Sweden | VFS Global; 15-day processing[8] | Set out by VFS for your purpose | Reservation, unless told otherwise |
| UK | Online, then biometrics[10] | Flight bookings rated less useful[11] | Usually leave it out |
Spain adds a residence condition that matters if you have just moved. Its Riyadh page lists "Proof of residence in the consular district" as a required document and says the office accepts applications from people residing in its district who travel to Spain as their main destination.[6] It also refuses passports issued more than ten years ago.[6]
Italy splits the Kingdom between two posts. The Jeddah consulate's own district list runs from Mecca and Medina down to Jazan and Najran, plus Bahah, Asir, the Northern Region and Qurayyat.[18] Riyadh is not on that list, so a Riyadh resident's Italian file belongs with the embassy's visa section, filed through the visa application centre in Riyadh.[5] Italy also issues its visa only when Italy is the sole or main destination.[5]
Working out your dates from the iqama and re-entry visa
Three dates have to line up before you order anything: the iqama expiry, the "Return before" date on your exit and re-entry visa, and the return flight on your reservation. Germany wants the iqama valid three months beyond the return.[2]
Say your iqama expires on 10 June and your employer issues an exit and re-entry visa with "Return before" on 20 March. You want twelve days in Munich from 1 March. The return on 13 March sits inside the re-entry window. The iqama, though, has under three months left after 13 March, so the German file is weak until the iqama is renewed. Renew, print a fresh Absher excerpt, and only then book the TLScontact slot.
We see this more often than flight problems. A reservation can be reordered in ten minutes; an iqama renewal depends on your employer.
Applying as a Saudi citizen in Riyadh
Much of the advice online is written for expatriates. Saudi nationals face a shorter list. Germany asks Saudi applicants for a current bank balance showing enough funds rather than six months of salary history, and for a translated copy of the national ID card if the passport does not show the place of birth.[2] The flight item is the same round-trip reservation.[2]
For Britain, Saudi passport holders should run GOV.UK's visa checker, which says whether an ETA or a full visa applies to them.[17] No flight booking is involved in that process.
US and UK visas from Riyadh
The US Embassy in Riyadh has its doors open, though its visa page says routine visa services are unavailable throughout Saudi Arabia for the time being.[9] In normal times, nonimmigrant visas for Saudi citizens and residents are handled in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, while immigrant visas are only processed in Riyadh.[9] Until that changes, expatriates usually apply in their home country. The same page notes that Presidential Proclamation 10998 has limited visas for nationals of 39 countries since 1 January 2026.[9] A US application does not need a flight booking.
UK applicants apply online and give biometrics at a centre listed on GOV.UK's finder.[10] The Home Office classes "flight bookings (unless transiting)" as less useful evidence.[11] We would spend the effort on the salary certificate and bank statements instead.
Flying out of King Khalid International
Saudipedia, the Ministry of Media's encyclopedia, describes RUH as about 35 km north-east of the centre, with five main terminals, and notes that terminals 1 and 2 serve international destinations while terminal 5 handles domestic flights.[13] Check your airline's current terminal before travel, because allocations do move.
For a visa itinerary, use routes that genuinely run. Two examples from primary sources:
- London: the Saudi Press Agency reported on 19 May 2026 that Riyadh Air opened full public sales between RUH and Heathrow, with its new aircraft on the route from 1 July 2026, after daily flights to Terminal 4 since 26 October 2025.[14]
- Via Dubai: Emirates says it operates 21 flights a week between Riyadh and Dubai, which connect onward to Europe and Asia.[15]
A one-stop routing through a Gulf hub is the most common shape for a Riyadh–Europe trip and looks perfectly ordinary on a Schengen file.

Living in Qassim, Hail or elsewhere in the central region
Riyadh's visa centres serve a wide area. If you live in Buraidah or Hail you will usually drive or fly to the capital for a TLScontact or VFS appointment, because the European centres we found for this part of the Kingdom are in Riyadh. The Dutch rules make clear you must attend in person to give fingerprints.[3]
Indian passport holders in the region have more local options. The Embassy of India lists VFS-run passport centres in Buraidah and Hail as well as Riyadh, and says passport and attestation services are also offered in Hofuf, Arar, Hafr Al Batin, Al Khafji, Wadi Al Dawasir and Al Qurrayat.[12] Renew an old passport there first: Spain will not take one issued over ten years ago.[6]
On the reservation, start from the airport you will actually fly from. If that is RUH after a drive from Qassim, start at RUH.
Example: an Indian software consultant visiting Munich
An Indian consultant in Al Olaya plans eight days in Munich in May, Germany being the only Schengen country on the trip. He books a TLScontact slot in Riyadh for 6 April.[1]
Before the slot, he asks HR for a Chamber of Commerce attested letter and a GOSI certificate, prints an English Absher excerpt of his exit and re-entry visa, and checks the iqama has well over three months after his return.[2] He books a refundable hotel and leaves it in place. On 3 April he orders a round-trip reservation, RUH to Munich via Dubai, back the same way, which matches the checklist's "round trip airline reservation" wording. He opens the PNR on the airline's site the morning of the slot.
Example: an Egyptian family relocated from Jeddah
An Egyptian accountant moved his family from Jeddah to Riyadh in January and wants Spain in the summer. Spain's Riyadh office asks for proof of residence in its consular district.[6] So the first job is paperwork showing the new Riyadh address, such as an updated tenancy contract or employer letter, before booking the appointment.
His wife's passport was issued eleven years ago, which Spain will not accept, so she renews at the Egyptian consulate first.[6] Two weeks before the appointment, when both passports and the address proof are ready, they order a four-person reservation, RUH to Madrid and back, with names exactly as in each passport.
Ordering from Riyadh
- Confirm your desk: TLScontact for Germany, VFS for the Netherlands, Denmark or Sweden.
- Line up the iqama, re-entry visa and return date.
- Key in your itinerary on our booking page, usually departing RUH.
- Card payment through Razorpay, SAR 34 per name.
- Expect the PDF by email, typically inside 10 minutes.
- Open the booking on the carrier's site; our step-by-step check walks you through it.
Order questions: order tracking. Other markets: price page.
How many days before the appointment?
Two to four, in our view. Holds run for a maximum of two weeks, and the airline may cut that short. EU rules open the application window six months out and close it 15 days before departure; consulates normally decide in 15 days, or 45 at most.[16] Germany's Saudi checklist uses the same six-month and 15-day window.[2] Book the slot early, the reservation late.
What to avoid in a Riyadh file
- Cancelling the hotel after submission; Germany says bookings may be verified.
- Arabic-only documents in a German file.
- An Absher printout in Hijri dates when Germany asks for Gregorian.
- Applying to Italy or Germany when another country is your main destination.
- Edited PDFs that the airline's system cannot match.
Riyadh FAQ
Does Germany want a paid ticket from Riyadh applicants?
The Saudi tourist list wants a copy of a return airline reservation showing every passenger and the whole route. That is reservation wording, so a held booking is what it describes. If TLScontact gives you a different list for your category, follow that one. The consulate decides; no document can guarantee a visa.
Where is the German visa centre in Riyadh?
Germany uses TLScontact only, with centres in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar. The embassy's page sends you to TLScontact's website for the address, opening hours and appointments. Book there directly rather than through anyone selling slots.
What iqama validity does a Schengen file need?
Germany sets three months beyond the date you fly back, shown alongside your exit and re-entry visa on an official Absher or Muqeem excerpt. Italy sets the same three-month rule. Renew first if you are short, then book the appointment.
Can I get a US visa interview in Riyadh now?
Not for routine visas. Washington's mission in the Kingdom has paused routine processing for now and tells applicants to use their country of residence or nationality. Watch its visa page for updates. A US application never needs a flight booking.
How do I pay SAR 34 from Riyadh?
By debit or credit card on our Razorpay checkout. One person costs SAR 34 for either a single or a return; for multi-city routes, count SAR 34 per pair of legs. Cash is impossible, since we have no premises in Saudi Arabia.
Which airline should my reservation use?
Any carrier that really flies your route on your dates. From RUH, a one-stop routing through Dubai or another Gulf hub is common for Europe, and Riyadh Air now sells nonstop flights to Heathrow. We hold whichever bookable option you choose and the PDF lists each sector.
Can I fly on the reservation?
No. A real PNR holds the seat but no fare is paid, so check-in at RUH will turn it away. After the visa is issued, buy your ticket for dates inside the visa.
Get your Riyadh reservation
Order online at SAR 34 a passenger and check the PNR yourself.
A reminder: what we send is an unpaid reservation. Nobody can fly on it, and the visa decision rests with the mission. Call it a reservation on every form.
