This page looks at Kerala as a whole, from Kasaragod down to Parassala. What follows is for everyone else too: the family in Kannur choosing between CNN and CCJ, the student in Thiruvananthapuram who assumes everything happens in Kochi, the Malappuram household that has always flown to the Gulf and now wants Europe. Which Kerala airport should appear on the reservation?
The one you will really fly from. Kerala is unusual in having four international airports within a day's drive, and an itinerary that starts at the right one reads naturally against your home address.

Notice the pattern. Outside Kochi, Kerala's airports are almost entirely Gulf-facing, with Thailand and Nepal as the notable extras. So a reservation to Europe, Japan or North America from TRV, CCJ or CNN will normally connect through a Gulf hub. That is entirely ordinary and nobody at a visa desk will think twice about a Kannur–Abu Dhabi–Frankfurt routing. Kannur's own published schedule shows the shape of the network, for example Air India Express flights to Jeddah on set weekdays.[18]
Where is a Kerala visa file actually decided?
Mostly outside Kerala, which is why reading the right checklist matters so much.

Two rules catch Kerala applicants. Italy says you must have lived in a consular district for at least six months to apply there.[8] Spain's BLS page says the same thing in different words: your actual residence over the past six months counts, not the address in the passport.[9] If you moved home from Dubai in July and want to apply in September, ask the mission how it treats you before booking anything.

Spain's checklist: the clearest flight wording for Kerala
Spain is worth singling out because its Mumbai consulate, which handles Kerala, puts its view in writing. Under trip details, Mumbai's tourism list wants a cover letter, "Flight bookings (roundtrip)" and any internal travel reservations, then advises holding off on purchasing the air ticket until a visa is granted.[10] Few official lists back a reservation this openly. A held booking with a PNR, retrievable on the airline's site, is precisely what the consulate describes.
The same list wants hotel bookings for the whole stay, or an invitation letter if you are staying with family in Spain.[10] If you are flying into Madrid and out of Barcelona, show internal train or flight bookings between them. For more on Spanish files, see our Spain visa guide.
Germany's checklist is similar in spirit. Item 11 is simply "Flight reservation", and the missions add that a booked ticket will not speed up processing.[6]
Applying from Kozhikode, Kannur or Kasaragod
North Kerala is a long way from Kochi's visa centres, and that shapes the plan.
UK applicants have a local option. VFS lists Calicut among its twelve UK premium application centres in India.[3] It costs more than a standard centre, but it can save a day on the train. Since the UK treats flight bookings as evidence not to use for a visit, most Malabar families can leave the reservation out of a UK file altogether.[4]
For Schengen and Japan, plan a Kochi trip. Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Japan all point Kerala applicants to centres in Kochi or Cochin.[8][9][11][13] Order the reservation before you leave Kannur or Kozhikode so it is printed and checked when you arrive.
Mahé is a special case. The little Puducherry enclave next to Thalassery is listed by name in the French Consulate General's district in Pondicherry, alongside Kerala itself.[12] For France, Mahé and Kerala residents therefore deal with the same consulate. Mahé is part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, so for other countries check whether a mission's map names Puducherry or Kerala before assuming it behaves like Kannur.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and the south
People in the capital often assume Kochi does everything. For lodging Schengen and Japanese files that is broadly true, since the centres named on the official pages we checked are in Kochi.[8][9][11][13] For decisions, though, the south looks to Chennai as much as Mumbai: the US consulate and the Japanese consulate both sit there.[1][13] A US interview from Thiruvananthapuram means an overnight train or a short flight to MAA.
TRV's Emirates service to Dubai suits reservations to Europe and North America through Dubai, and Emirates' route page for TRV lists onward links such as London and New York.[14] For Southeast Asia, Air India Express lists Thailand from TRV.[15]
Two worked examples from different ends of the state
A Thalassery couple visiting a daughter in Barcelona. This is an illustration. They live in Thalassery, so Spain's Mumbai jurisdiction applies, and they lodge at BLS in Edappally.[9] Their daughter sends an invitation letter, which replaces hotel bookings under the checklist.[10] For the flight we would hold Kannur–Abu Dhabi–Barcelona and back, both names exactly as in their passports. They take the train to Ernakulam the evening before the appointment, so we would order the reservation three or four days before that train, giving them time to check the PNR at home.
A Technopark engineer heading to a conference in Osaka. Also an example. Japan's Chennai consulate decides Kerala files, and she lodges at VFS Cochin.[13] She follows the Chennai document list for business travel. Her reservation runs TRV–Dubai–Osaka or via Bangkok, matching the conference dates and two extra days. If her employer is booking the real ticket anyway, she may simply use that; a reservation is for when the trip is not yet paid.
Gulf travel from Kerala: visits versus jobs
Most international journeys from Kerala's smaller airports go to the Gulf, as the route lists above show. Two different situations come up.
Visiting a relative in the Gulf normally means that relative sponsors you, under rules that vary from one state to the next. How each state treats a flight booking is covered country by country: Oman, Qatar, the Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi.
Employment is handled differently. ECR passport holders heading to a job in one of the notified countries need emigration clearance first, and the MEA's list of Protector of Emigrants offices includes Thiruvananthapuram as well as Cochin.[20] That process goes through your employer or licensed agent on eMigrate. A reservation from us has no part in it.

When should a Kerala applicant order?
A few days before you hand in the file, counting from when you leave home if the centre is in another district. Holds last two weeks at the very most, often less depending on the carrier, so ordering on the day you get the slot gains you nothing. If your US interview in Chennai is on a Wednesday and you take the Tuesday night train, order on the Saturday or Sunday before.

- Identify the deciding office from the table, then download that office's checklist.
- Pick your departure airport: TRV, COK, CCJ or CNN, whichever you would really use.
- Fill in the booking form, copying names from each passport's data page.
- Pay ₹699 for each person by UPI, card or netbanking; Razorpay handles the checkout.
- Receive the PDF by email, usually within about 10 minutes.
- Open it on the carrier's website by typing the PNR and the lead traveller's surname. Our verification guide walks through it.

Kerala FAQ
Do I have to go to Kochi for a Schengen visa?
Usually, yes, for lodging. Italy, Spain and the Netherlands name centres in Kochi or Cochin, and German Schengen files can go to any Indian VFS centre. The decision itself is taken elsewhere, mostly in Mumbai. Residents of Kannur or Thiruvananthapuram should plan a trip to Ernakulam and order the reservation before they set off.
Which consulate decides a US visa for Kerala residents?
The US Consulate General in Chennai, whose district includes Kerala. No flight booking is required, and the State Department suggests buying tickets only after the visa is issued. If you choose to bring a reservation to show your dates, call it a reservation.
Is there a UK visa centre in north Kerala?
VFS lists a UK premium application centre in Calicut. It charges a premium over the standard centres. GOV.UK files flight bookings under evidence a visitor should not bother sending, so a Malabar family can generally leave ours out.
Can my reservation start from Kannur or Kozhikode?
Yes. Both airports have frequent Gulf flights, so a routing such as Kannur–Abu Dhabi–Frankfurt or Kozhikode–Doha–London looks perfectly natural. Choose the airport you would really use, and keep the dates consistent with your hotel and leave letter.
Does Spain accept a flight reservation from Kerala applicants?
Its Mumbai consulate, which covers Kerala, asks for round-trip flight bookings and advises not buying the air ticket before the visa is granted. A held reservation with a PNR matches that wording, though the consulate still decides each case on its merits.
Which French consulate handles Kerala and Mahé?
France's consulate in Pondicherry, which also runs a Bureau de France in Chennai. Its district names Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry including Mahé. Start your application on France-Visas, which generates the document list for your situation.
How do I pay from Kerala?
Online through Razorpay, by UPI, debit or credit card, or netbanking. Each traveller costs ₹699 whether the route is one way or return; multi-city itineraries are charged for every two sectors. We have no office in Kerala and do not take cash.
