If you live in Imphal, Thoubal, Churachandpur or Ukhrul and want a visa for Europe, Japan or the US, the paperwork will take you out of Manipur. No consulate, embassy or visa application centre on the lists we checked sits anywhere in the state. The nearest real options are Guwahati, a short flight away, and Kolkata, the consular capital of the east. A few countries go further and route Manipur to New Delhi. We explain which is which below, quote what each checklist says about flights, and suggest when to order a reservation given the travel involved. You deal with us online; we keep no office or agent in Imphal.

Which office decides a visa file from Manipur?
It depends entirely on the destination country. Four big ones send Manipur to Kolkata: the US, Germany, Italy and France each list the state in their Kolkata district.[2][4][7][10]
Two point to Delhi instead. Spain's jurisdiction list puts Manipur, with most of the north-east, under its New Delhi embassy, although BLS lets you lodge at its Kolkata centre.[12] Japan is the surprise. VFS's page for Japan in India lists Manipur under the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, not the Kolkata consulate, while Bihar and West Bengal stay with Kolkata.[11] A Manipur applicant should therefore read Delhi's Japan checklist, not Kolkata's.
Germany is the most flexible for short trips. Its missions accept Schengen files at any VFS centre in India and forward them to Mumbai for the decision.[5] For long-stay visas such as study or work, Kolkata's consulate is the competent office for Manipur.[4]
The Netherlands lists twelve Indian VFS centres and none is in the north-east; Kolkata is the closest.[14]

Where a checklist recommends paid or confirmed tickets, as Italy's Kolkata list does, a held reservation may not satisfy it. Better to hear it from us today than from a VFS officer next month. Everywhere else in the table, a verifiable reservation matches the wording.

What can you do in Guwahati, and what still needs Kolkata?
Guwahati is the closest big city for most Manipur families, so it is worth knowing exactly what it offers.
- UK biometrics. VFS lists Guwahati among its twelve premium UK centres. Premium centres cost extra, while standard centres avoid that surcharge, though a UKVI service fee may apply.[15]
- Italian visas. Italy names Guwahati among the VFS points feeding its Kolkata consulate.[8]
- Japan by courier. VFS's Delhi page for Japan mentions a Blue Dart collection centre in Guwahati for applicants using its courier option.[11] Read the conditions carefully before relying on it.
- Emigration matters. Guwahati has a Protector of Emigrants office, the nearest one for Manipur.[21]
For a US interview, a Dutch or French file, or a Spanish application lodged at BLS, you are still looking at Kolkata.[2][12][14]
Which flights out of Imphal fit an itinerary?
From the airline pages we checked, Imphal is a domestic departure point, and IndiGo publishes the main links:
- Imphal–Kolkata: two nonstop IndiGo flights, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes.[18] This doubles as your route to the Kolkata appointment.
- Imphal–Guwahati: about an hour's flight on IndiGo.[19]
- Imphal–Delhi: sold by IndiGo, with nonstop options.[20] From Delhi you reach almost every long-haul destination.
A believable international reservation from Manipur therefore looks like Imphal–Kolkata–Bangkok–Tokyo, or Imphal–Delhi–Frankfurt, or simply starts in Kolkata or Delhi if you plan to reach those cities by other means. Choose what you will really do. If the officer sees Imphal on the booking and your form says you live in Imphal, that is a consistent story.
Example: an Imphal nurse going to a conference in Germany
Treat this as an illustration only. A nurse at a hospital in Imphal is invited to a three-day medical conference in Berlin in February and wants to add four days of sightseeing. For a Schengen business or conference visa, Germany lets her lodge at any VFS centre in India.[5] Kolkata is her nearest practical choice.
Germany's tourism checklist names a flight reservation, and she should still open the business or conference list for her own category in case it adds anything.[6] She books a Monday appointment in Kolkata and plans to fly IMF–CCU on the Sunday. We would suggest she order the reservation on the Thursday or Friday before, routed Kolkata or Delhi to Berlin via a hub, so she can check the PNR on the airline's site while still at home in Imphal and print two copies. The conference letter, hotel and insurance all show the same seven days. If she later changes plans and Italy becomes her main destination, the Kolkata consulate's preference for paid tickets would change our advice.[9]
A second example: an Ukhrul family visiting relatives in Tokyo
Again, an invented case to show the reasoning. A couple from Ukhrul, now living in Imphal, want three weeks in Japan to see a cousin who works near Tokyo. Their first instinct is the Kolkata consulate, because that is where friends from Siliguri applied. VFS's regions page says otherwise: for Manipur residents, the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi is in charge.[11]
So the couple open the Delhi section of VFS's Japan site and follow its document list for a relative visit, including the cousin's letter of guarantee and an itinerary in Japan. They also read the courier arrangements on that page, which mention a collection point in Guwahati; whether that suits them depends on the conditions VFS sets, so they confirm before relying on it.[11]
For the flight, a held reservation routed Imphal–Kolkata–Bangkok–Tokyo, or Delhi–Tokyo if they plan to fly from the capital, gives the officer clear arrival and departure dates. We would have them order it about a week before the documents leave Imphal, since a courier or a trip to Delhi adds days. Every date on the itinerary in Japan should sit inside the flight dates, with the first night in Tokyo matching the arrival.
What to carry when you travel out for the appointment
People who fly to Kolkata or Delhi for a visa slot sometimes forget that the flight document is checked twice: once by you, once by the officer. A few habits help.
- Two printed copies of the reservation, single-sided, in case the centre keeps one.
- The PNR and airline name written on your own checklist so you can answer quickly.
- The PDF on your phone as a backup, with the email still in your inbox.
- A last check the night before on the airline's Manage booking page from your hotel.
What about Myanmar and other neighbouring trips?
Manipur borders Myanmar, and people often ask whether a reservation helps with a Myanmar visa or the land crossing at Moreh. We could not confirm Myanmar's current entry points or e-visa rules on an official page that loaded for us in October 2026, so we will not guess. Check the Myanmar government's e-visa portal and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs advisories before planning anything. When should someone in Imphal order the reservation?
Count from the day you fly out of Imphal, not the appointment date. Expect the hold to last no longer than 2 weeks, with each airline choosing its own cut-off. Ordering four or five days before you leave Manipur usually keeps it live through the appointment and the first days of processing.
Weather and schedule changes can push a north-east flight by a day. Build in that slack: we would rather you hold a reservation one day older than miss the appointment because you waited for the PDF.

- Confirm the deciding office for your destination using the table above.
- Download that office's checklist and note how it phrases the flight item.
- Choose the starting airport you will genuinely use: IMF, Kolkata or Delhi.
- Complete the booking form with each traveller's name exactly as printed on the passport.
- Pay ₹699 per person by UPI, card or netbanking.

Pitfalls for Manipur applicants
- Following Kolkata's Japan checklist. VFS lists Manipur under the Delhi embassy for Japan.
- Assuming Guwahati handles everything. It helps for the UK and Italy, but most other missions need Kolkata.
- Booking the reservation weeks early because you booked the appointment early. It may expire before review.
- Different spellings across documents. Names from Manipur sometimes appear in several forms; use the passport spelling everywhere.
- Edited or "sample" PDFs. A PNR the carrier's site cannot pull up is worse than no booking.

Is there any visa application centre in Manipur?
None appears on the official lists we read this month. Dutch, Spanish and Italian centre lists, and VFS's UK premium list, show no Manipur location. The nearest centres are in Guwahati for the UK and Italy, and in Kolkata for most other countries. Confirm the latest list on the mission's own site before you book travel.
Where does an Imphal resident attend a US visa interview?
At the US Consulate General in Kolkata, whose district covers Manipur and the other north-eastern states. The interview requires no flight booking, and US guidance says to wait for approval before spending on fares. If you carry a reservation to explain dates, describe it as a reservation.
Why does Japan send Manipur applicants to Delhi?
That is how VFS's Japan page for India draws the map: Manipur sits in the Embassy of Japan's New Delhi district, while Kolkata's consulate covers West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. So you follow the Delhi document list. VFS also mentions a Guwahati courier collection point for Delhi-district applicants.
Can I give UK biometrics in Guwahati?
Yes, VFS lists a UK premium application centre in Guwahati. Premium centres charge an extra fee on top of the visa fee. GOV.UK's visitor guidance puts flight bookings on its list of evidence to skip, so Manipur visitors can usually omit ours.
Does Italy accept a flight reservation from Manipur applicants?
Italy's Kolkata consulate recommends fully paid and confirmed flight tickets in its 2026 tourist list. A held reservation is unpaid, so it may not meet that recommendation. A refundable fare is the safer option if Italy is your main destination. The consulate always makes the final call.
How do I pay from Imphal?
Pay on our website via Razorpay with UPI, any Indian card or netbanking. Each traveller costs ₹699, single journey or round trip alike. We do not have an office or agent in Manipur, and we do not accept cash.
How long does the reservation stay valid?
Two weeks at most; how long exactly is the airline's call. Since you must fly or travel to Kolkata, Guwahati or Delhi for the appointment, order a few days before you leave home rather than when you first book the slot.
Can I board a flight with the reservation?
No. The seat is only held under a PNR; nothing is paid, so no check-in desk will accept it. After the visa is granted, buy the actual ticket for the dates on your visa.
