Chennai is a regional hub for visas. People travel in from Coimbatore, Madurai, Puducherry and even Kerala for interviews here, and the consulates on Anna Salai and Cenotaph Road see applicants from several states. That makes the jurisdiction rules worth getting right before you think about flights at all. Below we set out who serves Chennai, what each mission writes about flight bookings, which airlines fly out of MAA, and how to order a reservation from home. We work entirely online; there is no DummyTicketPrice office in Chennai to visit.

Is the Chennai US consulate where you will be interviewed?
If you live in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Lakshadweep or the Andamans, Chennai is your US consular district.[1] The consulate describes itself as one of the top adjudication posts in the world and the number one post for employment-based visas.[2] That explains the H-1B and L-1 crowd you will see outside on interview days.
Do you need a flight booking for that interview? No. The State Department's guidance is blunt: don't "buy tickets until you have a visa".[3] The DS-160 asks for intended travel dates, not proof of a booking. Some Chennai applicants still bring a reservation to show a short, defined visit, especially parents visiting children in the US. That is a choice, not a requirement, and we would not spend money on it unless it helps you answer questions about dates.
What do the Chennai missions write about flights?
Each mission has its own phrasing. Here is how they compare, taken from the official pages.
| Country | Who handles a Chennai resident | Official wording on travel | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | US Consulate General Chennai[1] | Wait for the visa before buying flights[3] | Nothing required; optional reservation |
| Germany, Schengen | VFS anywhere in India; decision in Mumbai[7] | Lists a "Flight reservation" and adds that buying early will not get the file decided sooner[8] | Held reservation |
| Germany, long stay | German Consulate General Chennai[6] | Depends on category; student and work files rarely need flights at filing | Only if your category list asks |
| France | Pondicherry & Chennai consulate; VFS in Chennai or Puducherry[9][10] | Document list generated by France-Visas; transport wording not retrievable by us in October 2026 | Use whatever France-Visas tells you |
| UK | VFS Chennai or Coimbatore[4] | "Flight bookings (unless transiting)" sit on the less-useful list[5] | Usually skip |
| Netherlands | VFS Chennai[13] | Reservation in your name; no paid ticket needed[13] | Held reservation |
| Italy | Bangalore consulate via VFS Chennai[11] | Recommends refundable tickets and hotels because refusals happen[11] | Reservation or refundable fare |
Where a list you are handed uses the words "confirmed" or "paid" about the flight, believe it. Our held booking might not meet that bar, and a refundable fare protects you better in that situation.

Jurisdiction traps for people living in Tamil Nadu
Chennai's missions do not all draw the same map, and that catches people out.
France splits the south differently. Tamil Nadu and Kerala belong to the consulate in Pondicherry and Chennai, while Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana belong to Bangalore.[9] If you have just moved from Bengaluru to Chennai for work, your new address decides which consulate examines the file.
Germany's long-stay map is not the US map. For national visas, the German consulate in Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry, but not Kerala or Karnataka.[6] For a short Schengen trip it does not matter, because any VFS centre will forward the file to Mumbai.[7]
Italy has no consulate in Chennai. Tamil Nadu residents are handled by the Italian Consulate General in Bangalore, though you can submit at the VFS centre in Teynampet.[11] Kerala residents, by contrast, go to the Italian consulate in Mumbai.[11]
Japan includes Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Chennai Consulate-General's jurisdiction stretches to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.[12]
Flights from MAA that read naturally on a reservation
An itinerary should look like something a Chennai traveller would really book. These are routes the airlines themselves publish from Chennai:
- Frankfurt: Lufthansa's route page lists nonstop Chennai–Frankfurt flights several days a week.[14] Handy for a German file.
- London: British Airways has a dedicated page for its direct Heathrow–Chennai service.[15]
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines flies Chennai–Singapore nonstop and connects onward to Europe and Australia.[16]
For France, Italy or the Netherlands there is usually a connection, through Frankfurt, a Gulf hub, Singapore or an Indian city. That is fine. What matters is that the arrival into Schengen and the departure out of it sit on the dates in your form.

Example: a Mylapore family heading to Paris
Imagine a family of four in Mylapore planning a week in Paris in late December. Their address puts them under the French consulate for Pondicherry and Chennai, and they can book VFS in Chennai.[9][10] The appointment is on 1 December.
They fill in the France-Visas form first, because it produces the list of documents for their profile. We would order the reservation on 28 or 29 November with all four names on one PNR, spelt as in each passport, including the children's. A Chennai–Frankfurt–Paris routing on Lufthansa, or a Gulf connection, both look ordinary. The hotel, insurance and the parents' leave letters all show the same arrival and departure dates. If France-Visas asks for anything stronger than a reservation, they follow that instead.
A second example: Coimbatore parents and a US visit
Picture a retired couple from Coimbatore whose daughter works in Texas. Their address puts them in the Chennai consular district, so the visitor visa interview happens at the consulate on Anna Salai.[1] They want to attend the birth of a grandchild in March and stay about ten weeks.
Here we would not sell them anything before the interview. The DS-160 records intended dates; the officer cares about ties to Coimbatore, the daughter's status and who pays. If the couple feel more comfortable carrying a printout that shows a defined trip, a reservation ordered a couple of days before the interview does no harm, provided they call it a reservation if asked. Once the visa is in the passport, they buy the real ticket, perhaps Chennai to Frankfurt on Lufthansa and onward, or through Singapore. Our view: the money is better spent on a flexible fare after the visa than on paper before it.
Ordering from Chennai, step by step
- Confirm the right mission using the jurisdiction notes above.
- Download your category's checklist and see exactly how it words the flight item.
- Enter route, dates and passengers on our booking page, copying names from the passport's machine-readable page.
- Pay ₹699 per traveller using GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app, a card, or netbanking.
- Look for our email about 10 minutes later. Check spam if it is slow.
- Retrieve the PNR on the airline's site with your surname. Here is how.
Need to chase an order? Use order tracking. Pricing for other currencies is on the price page.
When should a Chennai applicant book it?
Within a few days of the appointment. Expect the booking to remain live for no more than 2 weeks; the carrier, not us, fixes the precise length, and it varies from one airline and fare to another. Booking on the day your slot is confirmed, three weeks out, is the commonest mistake we see. Wait until the week of the appointment. If the consulate holds your file for longer than expected and asks for an updated plan, order a new reservation then.
Applying from Puducherry, Kerala or the Andamans via Chennai
Chennai's missions serve a lot of people who do not live in Tamil Nadu, and each mission handles these neighbours a little differently.
Puducherry is the easy case. The US, German, French, Japanese and Italian districts we checked all include it alongside Tamil Nadu, and France also lists a VFS centre in Puducherry itself, close to its consulate.[1][6][9][10][11][12]
Kerala is split. For the US, France and Japan, Kerala looks to Chennai or Pondicherry.[1][9][12] For German long-stay visas, though, Kerala belongs to Bengaluru, and for Italy it belongs to Mumbai.[6][11] UK applicants in Kerala have VFS centres in Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram, so they rarely need to come to Chennai at all.[4]
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit in the US Chennai district and in the French Pondicherry district.[1][9] Islanders usually fly into MAA for appointments, so a reservation starting from Chennai rather than Port Blair is perfectly normal if that is how you will actually travel. Explain it in one line of your cover letter.
What to carry to a Chennai appointment
For the flight part of the file, three things are enough.
- A clean printout of the reservation PDF, single-sided, with every traveller's name visible.
- A note of the PNR and airline on your copy of the cover letter, so you can answer if asked.
- Matching dates on the insurance certificate, hotel confirmations and employer's leave letter.
The night before, open the booking on the airline's site once more. If the schedule has changed or the hold has been released, you will know in time to sort it out rather than discovering it at the counter in Chennai.
What to avoid
- Submitting at Chennai for a mission that wants you elsewhere, such as a Kerala resident applying to Italy here.
- Using an edited PDF or a "free generator". A booking that cannot be found on the airline's site invites refusal.
- Leaving a child off the booking. Every traveller in the application needs a seat on the itinerary.
- Dates that drift between flight, hotel and leave letter.
Chennai FAQ
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Chennai?
No. We are an online service and do not run a counter in Chennai or any other city. You order and pay on our site, through Razorpay, using UPI, a card or netbanking. We email the reservation as a PDF, usually within about 10 minutes, and you can print it at home or near the VFS centre.
Do I need a flight booking for my US visa interview in Chennai?
No booking is required, and Washington's own guidance warns against committing to tickets before the visa is in hand. You simply type your intended dates into the DS-160. Some applicants carry a reservation to show a short, defined visit, but it is optional and should never be presented as a paid ticket.
I live in Coimbatore. Must I travel to Chennai for a UK visa?
Not necessarily. VFS lists a premium application centre in Coimbatore (Peelamedu) alongside the standard Chennai centre. Premium centres charge extra and have limited days, so compare the cost of a trip to Chennai. Whichever you choose, the UK government regards a flight booking as weak evidence for a normal visit, so most people leave it out.
Which French consulate handles Tamil Nadu applicants?
The Consulate General of France in Pondicherry and Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, with a Bureau de France in Chennai. France-Visas lists VFS centres in both Chennai and Puducherry. Your France-Visas document list tells you what travel evidence to include.
Can I pay ₹699 by UPI?
Yes. Razorpay runs our checkout, so any UPI handle works, as do Indian debit and credit cards and netbanking. You pay ₹699 for each person on the booking, single or return; a multi-city journey costs that amount for every couple of sectors. We cannot take cash, having no shop or desk to take it at.
Can I fly from Chennai with this reservation?
No. The airline holds the seat under a real PNR, but no fare has been paid, so check-in will refuse it. Once your visa is granted, buy your actual ticket for the dates on the visa. Many people buy on the same route they used for the reservation, but you are free to choose.
Which route will my Chennai reservation show?
The one you ask for, provided it is bookable on your dates. For Germany many people choose Lufthansa's Chennai–Frankfurt flight; for the UK, British Airways from Chennai to Heathrow; for Asia-Pacific trips, Singapore Airlines via Singapore. If no direct seat is available, we hold a sensible one-stop alternative, and the PDF shows each sector clearly.
How long will my Chennai reservation last?
A fortnight at the outside, and often less, depending on the airline. Ordering in the week of your appointment keeps it alive while VFS and the consulate look at it. Moved appointment? Buy a replacement nearer the revised day.

Please note: a flight document of any kind cannot secure a visa for you. Call it a reservation on every form, keep it in step with your other papers, and leave the decision where it belongs, with the consulate.
