Bengaluru has more foreign missions and visa centres than most Indian cities, which is both good news and a source of confusion. Some applications are lodged and decided locally. Others are lodged here but posted to Mumbai or Chennai for a decision. This guide sorts out which office handles what for a Karnataka resident, what each one actually says about flights, and where a held reservation fits. We are an online service with no counter in Bengaluru; you order from your phone or laptop and the document arrives by email.

Which consulate decides a visa for someone living in Bengaluru?
It depends on the country, and the answer is not always "the one down the road". Four patterns cover almost every case you will meet in Bengaluru.
Decided in the city. France, Italy and Japan all have consulates in Bengaluru with visa sections. The French consulate's area is Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, with a Bureau de France in Hyderabad.[9] Italy's Bangalore consulate is wider: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Puducherry.[10] Japan's covers Karnataka alone.[13]
Lodged here, decided elsewhere. A German Schengen visa is the classic example. The German missions say you can hand in a Schengen file at any VFS centre in India because Mumbai's Consulate General is where the decision is taken.[5] The German Consulate in Bengaluru handles visa applications only for residents of Karnataka and Kerala, which in practice matters most for long-stay categories.[6]
Interview in another city. The US mission's own district map places Karnataka under the Consulate General in Chennai.[1] You may have read news in 2025 about a US consulate opening in Bengaluru. When we checked the US mission's pages in October 2026, we could not find visa services listed for Bengaluru, so plan on Chennai (or another post that offers you a slot) unless the official site says otherwise.
Centre only, decision abroad or online. UK visas are decided by UK Visas and Immigration; Bengaluru and Mysuru centres just take your biometrics and documents.[3]
What do Bengaluru's consulates say about flight bookings?
The short version: most ask to see your travel plan, very few insist on a paid ticket, and one Bangalore consulate openly tells you to keep your bookings refundable. Here is the wording from each official page.
| Destination | Where a Bengaluru resident applies | Flight wording on the official page | What we would submit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany (Schengen) | Any VFS centre; decided in Mumbai[5] | Checklist item "Flight reservation"; it adds that a booked ticket wins no priority in processing.[7] | Held reservation matching your dates |
| Italy | VFS Bangalore; decided by the Bangalore consulate[10] | Warns that a visa can be refused and invites applicants "to seek for refundable tickets and hotel bookings".[10] | Reservation, or a refundable fare if your checklist asks for a ticket |
| Netherlands | VFS Bangalore[11] | Its tourism checklist states: "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[12] | Held reservation |
| France | VFS Bangalore; Bangalore consulate decides[8] | France-Visas builds your document list after the online form. We could not read the transport wording directly in October 2026. | Follow your France-Visas list |
| United Kingdom | VFS Bengaluru or Mysuru[3] | GOV.UK says flight bookings carry little weight for ordinary visitors; transit cases are the exception.[4] | Often nothing; a reservation only if it helps explain your plan |
| United States | Interview at Chennai's district post[1] | US advice is to wait for the visa before paying for any flight.[2] | No ticket needed for the interview |
Notice the Italian line. It is unusual for a consulate to say it so plainly, and it is good advice for anyone in Bengaluru: do not lock money into a non-refundable fare before the decision. A reservation does that job for most checklists. If your own checklist insists on an issued, paid fare, a held booking can fall short of that, and buying a refundable fare is the straightforward fix.

Order online, pay ₹699 by UPI, and check the PNR on the airline's site before you leave for VFS.
Which VFS centre in Bengaluru, and what to carry on the day
For UK visas, VFS lists two standard centres in Karnataka, one in Bengaluru and one in Mysuru, both open Monday to Friday. There is also a premium centre in Mangalore that runs on Saturdays.[3] The Netherlands, France and Italy also use VFS in Bangalore.[8][10][11] Netherlands Worldwide asks you to book the slot yourself and not through an intermediary.[11]
On the day, the flight document is one sheet in a thick folder. What tends to go wrong in practice is not the reservation itself but mismatched dates between it and the hotel, the insurance and the leave letter. Before leaving for the centre, put those four papers next to each other on the table and compare every date. Two minutes, well spent.
Which flights from BLR make sense on a reservation?
Pick a routing that a real traveller from Bengaluru would book. An officer who knows the city will find a Bengaluru to Paris itinerary via three unrelated hubs odd. A few routes that the airlines themselves publish from BLR:
- Germany: Lufthansa sells nonstop Bengaluru–Frankfurt and Bengaluru–Munich flights. Its Munich page showed that flight on a seasonal summer pattern, so check your date.[14][15]
- UK: British Airways lists Bengaluru among its direct routes to London Heathrow.[16]
- Netherlands: KLM sells Bengaluru–Amsterdam, a natural choice for a Dutch Schengen file.[17]
- USA: Air India publishes a Bengaluru–San Francisco route page.[18]
Schedules change by season, and we pick from what is bookable on the day you order. If you ask for Bengaluru to Amsterdam and the only bookable option that week connects in Mumbai or Delhi, the reservation will show that connection. That is normal and nobody expects otherwise.

An example: a Bengaluru couple applying for Italy
Say you and your spouse live in Whitefield and plan nine nights in Rome and Florence in late November. You fall within the Italian consulate in Bangalore, so you book a VFS slot in Bengaluru.[10] Your appointment is on 6 November.
We would order on 4 or 5 November, not in mid-October. Both names go on one booking, spelt exactly as in the passports. The outbound flight lands in Rome the day your first hotel night begins; the return leaves Florence or Rome the morning after your last night. Your insurance runs the full span. Because the Italian page itself recommends refundable bookings, you keep the hotel on a free-cancellation rate too. Should the VFS checklist you are given want a purchased fare, switch to a refundable one then and there; arguing at the counter never helps.
How do you order from Bengaluru?
- Check where you apply. Use the table above, then open that mission's current checklist.
- Fix your dates. Match them to the hotel nights, leave letter and insurance you already have.
- Fill in the booking form. Type every name as it appears on the passport's data page.
- Pay ₹699 per passenger. UPI apps, debit or credit cards and netbanking all work through Razorpay.
- Open the email. Expect it in around 10 minutes; the PDF names the carrier and the six-character PNR.
- Verify it yourself. Type the booking code plus your last name into the carrier's "Manage booking" screen. Our guide to verifying before submission walks through it.
You can follow the order at our tracking page. Prices for other markets and multi-city trips are on the price page.
How close to your VFS date should you book?
Close. Airlines hold these bookings for up to 2 weeks, and each airline sets its own exact window, so something ordered a month ahead of your slot could be gone when the officer opens your file. Our habit is to order 48 to 72 hours before the appointment. If your appointment moves, order again nearer the new date rather than hoping the old one survives. The timing guide has more examples.
One Bengaluru-specific wrinkle: France says Indian passport holders born in India can lodge a short-stay application as little as 5 days before departure, and no more than 6 months ahead.[8] A late France application leaves little room, so book the reservation for the trip you will really take, not a placeholder.
Kerala residents applying through Bengaluru: which office is yours?
Plenty of people working in Bengaluru still hold a Kerala address, and plenty of Malayali families come here for appointments. The rules split three ways.
Germany puts Kerala with Bengaluru for national visas: the consulate here says it serves residents of Karnataka and Kerala only.[6] Italy sends Kerala to Mumbai; its Bangalore page names the Mumbai consulate as competent for the West, Goa and Kerala.[10] France does not handle Kerala from Bangalore at all, because its Bangalore district is Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.[9]
Italy adds a residence test: you should normally have lived legally in its district for at least the last 6 months, though it may accept a credible reason for applying where you are present.[10] If you moved to Bengaluru recently, keep proof of your local address handy, such as a rental agreement, and make sure the address on the form is the one you can prove.
Held reservation or refundable fare: which suits a Bengaluru file?
| Point | Held reservation (from us) | Refundable airline fare |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | ₹699 per traveller | Full fare paid to the airline, refunded later minus any fees in the fare rules |
| Checkable on the carrier's website | Yes, until the airline releases it | Yes |
| Usable for boarding | No | Yes |
| Fits "flight reservation" wording (Germany, Netherlands) | Yes | Yes, but more than needed |
| Fits "paid ticket" wording | May not | Yes |
| Money at risk if refused | ₹699 | Cancellation charges, and your cash is tied up until the refund lands |
Our honest view: for a German or Dutch Schengen file from Bengaluru, the reservation is the sensible spend. For Italy, read the checklist you are handed; if it insists on a ticket, the refundable fare is worth the trouble.
Mistakes we see in Bengaluru files
- Applying at the wrong office. A Kerala address on a long-stay German application goes to the Bengaluru consulate; a Tamil Nadu address does not.[6]
- Booking weeks early. The reservation lapses before anyone reads it.
- Different spellings. Initials expanded on one document but not on another.
- A route no one would fly. Keep it simple and plausible from BLR.
- Calling it a ticket. On forms and cover letters, write "flight reservation" or "itinerary".
Bengaluru questions we get asked
Do you have an office in Bengaluru where I can collect the document?
No. We are an online service with no walk-in counter in Bengaluru or anywhere else. You order on the site, pay with UPI, a card or netbanking, and the reservation turns up as a PDF by email, usually in about 10 minutes. You print it yourself, or take it to a print shop near your VFS centre.
Can I attend my US visa interview in Bengaluru?
On the US mission's pages we checked in October 2026, Karnataka is part of the Chennai consular district and we found no visa services listed for Bengaluru. Plan your interview through the official US visa appointment system and accept the post it offers. Washington's visitor-visa page also tells people to hold off on tickets until the visa comes through.
Where do I submit a German Schengen application from Bengaluru?
At any VFS Global centre in India, including Bengaluru. The German missions say every Schengen file travels to their Mumbai consulate, which makes the call. Their tourism list wants only a reservation, and paying for a fare in advance buys you no quicker answer.
The Italian consulate mentions refundable tickets. Will a reservation do?
The Bangalore consulate's visa page invites applicants to seek refundable tickets and hotel bookings because a visa can be refused. For most applicants a verifiable reservation shows the plan without putting money at risk. Should the list VFS hands you call for a purchased ticket, treat that as binding and pick a refundable fare.
What is the price in rupees, and which payment methods work?
₹699 for each traveller, the same for a single or a return journey; a multi-city plan is charged for every two legs. Checkout is handled by Razorpay, which takes Google Pay, PhonePe and other UPI apps, Indian debit and credit cards, and netbanking. Cash isn't possible since we have no premises in Bengaluru.
How long will the reservation stay valid?
At most around two weeks; the carrier picks the precise cut-off for every booking it holds. So we prefer orders placed shortly before the VFS visit, never weeks early. Should your slot be pushed back, simply buy a new reservation timed to the rescheduled date.
Which airline should I choose for a flight out of BLR?
Choose one that actually serves your route, such as Lufthansa to Frankfurt or Munich, British Airways to Heathrow or KLM to Amsterdam. A believable route from Kempegowda airport matters more than the brand. If nothing direct is bookable on your dates, a one-stop routing through an Indian or Gulf hub is fine.
Ready to order from Karnataka?
₹699 per passenger, live PNR, emailed in about 10 minutes. No office visit needed.
Honest limits: what you receive is a held seat record, nobody has paid the fare, and no gate agent will let you fly on it. It backs up your application; only the consulate grants or refuses the visa.
