Every admissions season, Indian students and their parents ask us the same thing: does the visa file need a flight ticket? For the main study destinations the honest answer is no, and buying one early can cost you money. But there are a few corners of the process, some of them specific to applying from India, where a held reservation does real work. This guide sets out the India-side steps that trip students up, from the APS certificate to the UK TB test, and shows exactly where a reservation earns its ₹699 and where you should skip it. Do Indian students need a flight ticket for a student visa?
Not for the visa decision in the five big destinations. The UK and Canadian student document lists we read contain no flight item, Australia and the US both advise against booking before the visa is settled, and for Germany we could not open a current Indian student checklist, so follow the one the mission gives you. Our student visa guide quotes each one. What decides a study visa is the offer or enrolment document, money, English or academic credentials, and in some cases your intention to return.
So why do so many agents in Hyderabad and Chandigarh still tell students to "attach a ticket"? Partly habit from visitor visas, where a reservation often is on the list. Partly because consultancies like a complete-looking file. We'd rather you spend the money on a courier for your attested transcripts.
The exceptions, covered further down, are narrower: when someone needs a firm travel date before you've paid for a flight, and when your parents apply to visit you.
Which India-side steps catch students out?
Three things, mostly, and none involves flights. Start them early, because each one has its own queue.
- APS for Germany. APS India, which sits within the Science Section of the German Embassy in New Delhi, verifies Indian academic documents for people planning to study in Germany. Its FAQ says the certificate is generally required for the German student visa procedure, that processing time depends on how quickly boards and universities respond, and that the fee is non-refundable.[1]
- TB test for the UK. GOV.UK requires a tuberculosis test if you're coming for six months or more and you've lived in a listed country; India is on the list.[3] The test must be done at an approved clinic, and the certificate stays valid for six months from the date of your x-ray.[2] Time it so it is still valid when you submit.
- Funds held long enough. For a UK Student visa you show living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 outside it, for up to nine months, and the money must have sat in the account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of applying.[4] An education loan sanction letter or FD needs the same attention to dates.
Getting these right does far more for your file than any travel document.
What does the UK want from Indian students?
A CAS from your university, the TB certificate, money evidence as above, English proof as your sponsor requires, and the visa fee plus healthcare surcharge. Decisions from outside the UK usually take three weeks, and successful applicants now get an eVisa rather than a card.[5] No flight document is involved.
Two India-specific notes. First, if you planned to bring a spouse, GOV.UK now limits dependants to students on postgraduate research courses such as PhDs, or government-sponsored students on courses over six months.[8] A taught master's from Pune doesn't qualify. Second, the eVisa has to be linked to the passport you'll travel on; if you renew your passport at a PSK after applying, update the UKVI account before you fly.

What about Germany?
Germany is the one destination where a travel date gets tied to other documents. The German missions in India link your visa start date to your health insurance, which has to match your intended travel date. We explain that mechanism in the student visa guide, so here's only the practical bit for Indian applicants.
Your APS certificate, admission letter, blocked account confirmation, insurance and motivation letter go through the VFS centre for your jurisdiction. The blocked account amount is set by the Federal Foreign Office and changes over time, so take the current figure from its site or your bank, not from a forum. If you want to commit to a travel date for the insurance without paying for a flight months out, a held reservation for that date is a tidy way to do it. Buy the actual ticket once the visa is stamped and the start date is clear.

How do Canada, the US and Australia handle Indian applicants?
Canada. The Student Direct Stream, which many Indian students used for faster processing, closed at 2:00 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024. Applications after that go through the regular study permit stream.[6] IRCC's study permit list centres on the letter of acceptance, a provincial or territorial attestation letter in most cases, identity documents and proof of financial support, with a letter of explanation recommended.[7] There's nothing about flights. If you're approved, the visa goes into your passport, and only after the passport comes back should you buy a ticket.
United States. The F-1 interview at a US consulate in India is about your programme, funding and plans. A reservation adds nothing to it. Washington's standing advice is to wait for the visa before buying flights, and there is a strict window for how early you may enter before your programme starts; our student visa guide sets out both.
Australia. Home Affairs tells subclass 500 applicants to avoid booking travel before the visa is finalised.[12] You'll need a Confirmation of Enrolment and health cover, not a flight booking. See the Australia guide for the visitor side, which your family may need.
So where does a reservation actually help an Indian student?
In four situations we see regularly:
- Germany's travel date. Fixing a date that your insurance and visa start date will follow, while your money stays in your account.
- University arrival forms. Some universities ask for your flight and arrival time to arrange airport pickup, hostel check-in or orientation. A reservation lets you give them a plan before the visa comes through.
- Short programmes in Europe. A summer school or exchange of 90 days or less in a Schengen country is usually a short-stay visa, and short-stay checklists often ask for flight details. Follow the exact list for that category from the mission.

What do parents need for convocation abroad?
It depends where you are studying, and the rules can surprise parents who assume all visas want a ticket.
- UK graduation. GOV.UK tells visitors that flight bookings are not useful evidence, except for transit.[9] Your parents should send their own financial and employment evidence and your invitation letter, not a booking.
- Germany or another Schengen state. German missions in India list "Flight reservation" on the tourism checklist.[10] Here a held reservation with matching dates is the right tool.
- Canada. IRCC's visitor guidance welcomes an itinerary, and flights can sit inside it.[11] A reservation fits.

How should an Indian student sequence things?
- Accept the offer and collect the CAS, I-20, CoE, letter of acceptance or German admission.
- Start India-side checks early: APS for Germany, TB test for the UK, loan sanction or FD for funds.
- Choose a realistic travel date within the window your visa will allow.
- Use a reservation only if someone asks for a date: German insurance, a university form, or a parent's visa.
- Apply and attend biometrics or the interview.
- Read the issued visa for its start date and conditions.
- Then buy the real ticket. Check the airline's own site for student fare or baggage rules before paying.
What mistakes do Indian students make?
- Buying a non-refundable fare right after the offer letter, then facing a later visa start date.
- Letting the TB certificate expire before the UK application goes in.
- Leaving APS too late and missing a German intake.
- Adding a "dummy ticket" to a UK or Canadian study file because an agent said so.
- A passport renewal that isn't reflected in your UK eVisa account.
- Parents attaching a booking to a UK visitor application against GOV.UK's guidance.
- Buying from an unknown WhatsApp seller. Read fake versus legitimate reservations first.
How do you order in India, and what does it cost?
Students and parents in India pay ₹699 a passenger, the same for one-way or return, and longer itineraries are charged per pair of legs. Frequently asked questions
Is a flight ticket required for a UK Student visa from India?
No. The GOV.UK Student visa requirements centre on a CAS from a licensed sponsor, enough money, English ability and, for Indian applicants staying six months or more, a TB test certificate. Flights don't feature. Buy your ticket after the eVisa is granted and you know your permitted start date.
Do I need APS before applying for a German student visa?
APS India's FAQ says the certificate is generally required as part of the German student visa procedure. Processing has no fixed timeframe because it depends on responses from boards and universities, and the fee is non-refundable. Start it as soon as you decide on Germany, well before you book a VFS appointment.
Is Canada's SDS still available for Indian students?
No. IRCC ended the Student Direct Stream at 2:00 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024. Applications received after that are processed in the regular study permit stream. You still need a letter of acceptance, an attestation letter in most cases, identity documents and proof of financial support.
How long is a UK TB certificate valid?
Six months from the date of your x-ray, according to GOV.UK. Since India is on the list of countries where the test is needed, and the requirement applies to stays of six months or more, time the test so the certificate is still valid when you submit the visa application.
Should my parents attach a flight booking for my UK graduation?
No. GOV.UK's visitor guidance lists flight bookings among documents not to use as evidence, unless transiting. Your parents should show their own income, savings and ties in India, plus your invitation letter and graduation details. For a Schengen or Canadian visitor visa it's different, and a reservation can help.
Can I use a reservation to fix my German travel date?
Yes, if you want a firm date for your insurance and visa start without buying a ticket. The German missions in India tie the visa start date to your insurance cover, so the date must be consistent. Order the reservation close to the appointment, and buy the real flight after the visa is issued.
