Mumbai is home to the consulates that decide visa files for most of western India. The consulates in Bandra Kurla Complex and Nariman Point serve the whole of western India. Every German Schengen application in the country lands on a desk in Mumbai, whichever VFS centre it was handed in at. If you live in Mumbai, you are applying to the people who wrote the checklist. That makes it worth reading exactly what they ask for about flights. Below: who covers Maharashtra and its neighbours, the flight wording on the Mumbai checklists we could retrieve, what Mumbai's two airports mean for your itinerary, and when to order. Mumbai visa key facts
| Question | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| US visas | The U.S. Consulate General in Bandra Kurla Complex represents the United States in western India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa.[1] |
| German Schengen visas | Decided by the Consulate General in Mumbai for applications filed at any VFS centre in India.[3] Its own district is Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.[2] |
| Italy and Spain | Both have Consulates General in Mumbai. Italy's district adds Kerala[6]; Spain's stretches across most of the south as well.[9] |
| Spain's 15-day rule | BLS centres under the Mumbai consulate refuse files whose departure is 15 calendar days or less away, barring an exception the consulate has agreed by email.[9] |
| Airports | Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM) and Navi Mumbai International (NMIA). NMIA opened on 25 December 2025[15] and began international operations on 15 July 2026.[16] |
| Cost of our reservation | ₹699 a head for one-way or return routes; UPI, cards or netbanking; sent by email in around ten minutes. |
Which consulates in Mumbai handle your visa?
For most countries, a Mumbai resident files with a Mumbai consulate. The districts overlap but are not identical, which matters if you have family in Goa or Kerala applying alongside you.
| Country | Mumbai mission | States it covers (as published) |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Consulate General, Bandra Kurla Complex | Western India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa[1] |
| Germany | Consulate General, Nariman Point | Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Also decides Schengen files from every Indian VFS centre[2][3] |
| France | Consulate General | Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu[5] |
| Italy | Consulate General | Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the western Union Territories[6] |
| Spain | Consulate General (files via BLS) | Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, plus Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Puducherry[9] |
| Japan | Consulate General | Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli[11] |
Notice the odd one out. Madhya Pradesh sits with Mumbai for the US, Germany, France, Italy and Japan. For Spain, though, BLS puts it under the embassy in New Delhi.[9] If your parents in Indore are travelling with you to Spain, they may need a different centre from yours.
Where do Mumbai applicants actually submit?
At an outsourced centre, in nearly every case. Spain's BLS centre is at Dalamal Towers, Nariman Point.[10] Italy's VFS partner has four offices across the consulate's district, in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi.[6] The Netherlands lists Mumbai among its twelve Indian VFS locations.[18] For Japan, VFS says applications filed in Mumbai pay in cash, by card or by UPI. It gives an indicative 10 days of processing in Mumbai, against 12 in Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa.[12]
The person at the counter checks completeness; the consulate decides. Italy states plainly that the authority to evaluate applications rests solely with the Consulate General.[6] So a counter clerk who accepts your reservation has not approved it. The officer reads it later, alongside everything else.
What the Mumbai checklists say about flights
The two Mumbai lists we could read in full both ask for a reservation or flight details. Neither asks for a paid ticket, and Spain actively advises against buying one.
- Spain, Consulate General in Mumbai: under details of the trip, "Flight bookings (roundtrip)", and the consulate suggests you hold off paying for flights until a decision arrives.[8]
- Italy, Consulate General in Mumbai: the "Air Ticket" line accepts return flight details or an "airlines reservation printout", and internal Schengen journeys must be proved too.[7]
- Germany (decided in Mumbai): "Flight reservation" is item 11; paying early for a ticket earns no priority.[4]
The Italian list also asks for a "Confirmed hotel reservation covering travel dates".[7] In practice, the consulate expects your flights and your hotel nights to line up exactly. If you arrive in Rome on the 6th, the first hotel night should be the 6th. Our hotel booking page covers that side.
For France, applications start on the France-Visas portal, which builds a document list for your profile. We have not reproduced its flight wording here because we could not retrieve a Mumbai-specific version. Use the list France-Visas gives you, and see our France guide.
Where a list you are handed demands a "confirmed" or "paid" ticket, read it literally; a held reservation may fall short. Ask the consulate or buy a refundable fare.

Japan and the US from Mumbai: two different attitudes to flights
Japan's Mumbai paperwork is heavy on money and identity, light on flights. The VFS page for the Consulate General asks for a passport valid for six months from entry. It also makes personal bank statements for the last three months and income tax returns mandatory, printed on A4.[12] If your passport was issued outside the consulate's district, say in Chennai before you moved to Andheri, VFS accepts it with government address proof such as a rent agreement, electricity bill or Aadhaar card.[12] Read the checklist for your visa type to see whether it wants an itinerary or flight details, and if it does, keep the dates identical to your schedule of stay. Our Japan guide quotes the national checklists.
The US Consulate General in Bandra Kurla Complex works differently again. The State Department tells B1/B2 applicants to hold off on final plans and tickets until the visa is actually issued.[19] Nobody at the interview window expects a flight document. Some applicants still like to settle on dates before filling in the form, and a reservation can help with that. Don't print it expecting it to sway the officer; it won't. Our US visa guide goes through what does matter.
Several Schengen countries from Mumbai
Plan the internal legs before you book anything. Mumbai's Italian checklist wants proof of every journey inside the Schengen area, which means trains, car hire or flights between cities, not just the long-haul flights in and out.[7] Say you plan five nights in Rome, three in Florence and four in Barcelona. Italy has the most nights, so the Mumbai Italian consulate is your mission. The file then needs Mumbai to Rome, a train from Rome to Florence, a Florence to Barcelona flight and Barcelona back to Mumbai. A single multi-city reservation can show the flights in one document; add the train booking separately. Our guide to multi-country Schengen trips has more routings.
The Spain 15-day rule, worked through
This catches more Mumbai applicants than any other timing rule, so it gets its own section. BLS states that centres in the Mumbai jurisdiction accept applications only where the travel date falls after 15 calendar days from submission. Exceptions need prior email approval from the consulate.[9]
Example: your BLS appointment at Nariman Point is on Monday 9 November. Day 15 after submission is the 24th, so your outbound flight should be on the 25th or later. If the reservation shows a departure on the 20th, the centre can refuse to take the file at all. Fix the dates before you order, not at the counter.
That rule sits on top of the general Schengen limits: no earlier than six months before travel, and at least 15 days before it.[17]
BOM or Navi Mumbai: which airport should your reservation use?
Use whichever you would genuinely fly from. Until late 2025 that question didn't exist. Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial operations on 25 December 2025[15], and Adani Enterprises reported that international flights there started on 15 July 2026.[16] For most long-haul visa trips, though, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International remains the main gateway. Emirates alone says it runs 35 flights a week between Dubai and Mumbai.[14]
A consulate won't fuss over BOM versus NMIA. What it notices is a reservation that makes no geographic sense, such as a Thane resident shown departing from Ahmedabad. Keep the departure city in Mumbai unless you have a real reason not to.
One practical reminder for the day you fly: CSMIA's departure guide asks passengers to arrive four hours before an international flight, and two hours before a domestic one.[13] It also says to carry your ticket. A reservation from us is not a ticket and won't get you into the terminal; you buy the real fare once the visa is granted.

How many days before a Mumbai appointment should you order?
Two to three days before is the sweet spot. Since a held booking lasts at most two weeks, with the carrier setting the precise window, ordering the day your slot is confirmed is usually premature.
Mumbai has one wrinkle. Because Germany decides every Indian Schengen file here, and processing takes time, some applicants worry the reservation must survive until the decision. It doesn't need to. What matters is that it is real and current when you submit and that it matches your plan. Officers know held bookings are temporary. Our validity guide explains what happens afterwards.
Getting your reservation: the Mumbai checklist
- Find your consulate in the table above, and check whether the 15-day rule applies (Spain).
- Book the appointment yourself on the VFS or BLS site.
- Decide the flight dates so they match the application form, insurance, hotel bookings and any leave letter.
- Order online at our booking page. We have no counter in Mumbai or anywhere else; the whole process happens on the website and by email.
- Pay ₹699 a passenger; Razorpay takes UPI, cards and netbanking.
- Look the booking up yourself. The airline's "Manage booking" tool needs just the PNR plus your surname. Our step-by-step check helps if the airline's site is unfamiliar.

Where Mumbai files go wrong on flights
- Return date after the visa you requested. If the form asks for 14 days and the reservation brings you home on day 17, the officer sees two different trips.
- Hotel nights that don't touch the flights. Italy's list wants hotels covering the travel dates; a gap night in the middle looks careless.
- Ignoring the Spain buffer. A departure less than 15 days after the BLS appointment can stop the file being accepted.
- A different spelling from the passport. Mumbai families often use anglicised spellings day to day ("Joshi" versus "Joshee"). The passport wins.
- Relatives in other states on the same booking but at the wrong centre. One reservation can carry everyone, but each person applies where their own residence puts them.
What it costs
Each traveller costs ₹699, one way or return. A couple applying together for Italy pays ₹1,398. Multi-city itineraries, which Italy's internal-travel requirement often calls for, are priced per pair of legs. The price page sets out every case.
Mumbai FAQ
Is every Indian German Schengen application decided in Mumbai?
Yes, according to German Missions in India. Files lodged at VFS anywhere in the country are sent on to the Mumbai consulate, which decides them. The checklist lists a flight reservation and notes that holding a booked ticket does not result in faster processing.
Can I fly out of Navi Mumbai on my visa reservation?
Your reservation can show NMIA if that is where you would really depart. Navi Mumbai International began commercial flights on 25 December 2025 and, according to Adani Enterprises, international operations from 15 July 2026. Check that an airline actually flies your route from there before choosing it, and keep the rest of the file consistent.
My Spain appointment is in 10 days and I fly in 12. Will BLS accept it?
Probably not without permission. BLS will only take a Mumbai-jurisdiction file when departure is over 15 calendar days after you submit, unless Spain's Mumbai consulate has agreed an exception by email in advance. Ask the consulate early, or move your dates.
Does the Italian consulate in Mumbai accept a reservation instead of a ticket?
Its tourist list accepts an "airlines reservation printout", so a reservation you can verify fits the wording. It also wants proof of internal travel within Schengen and confirmed hotel bookings for the travel dates. Make sure all three agree with each other and with your form.
Do you have an office in Mumbai where I can pay cash?
No. DummyTicketPrice is an online service with no walk-in office. You pay on the website by UPI, card or netbanking, and the reservation arrives by email, usually within about 10 minutes. Treat anyone who claims to be our local agent with suspicion.
How long does the reservation last?
At most two weeks, and each carrier sets its own exact hold time. Order it two or three days before your appointment. If your appointment moves, recheck the PNR on the airline's website before you go and order a new one if needed.
I live in Kerala. Do I come to Mumbai for Italy?
Kerala falls in the Mumbai consulate's district for Italy, but you need not travel to Mumbai to submit. Italy's VFS partner runs an office in Kochi as well as Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune. Your file is decided in Mumbai either way.
