Hyderabad has its own US consulate, a busy VFS network and an airport with direct links to Europe, the Gulf and Southeast Asia. What it does not have is a European visa section for most countries. A Telangana resident applying to Germany, France, Italy or Japan lodges papers in Hyderabad but is judged by a consulate in another city. That shapes how you plan your file. This guide explains the split, quotes what each mission says about flights, and shows how to order a reservation online. We don't have a Hyderabad office; all orders are placed and delivered online.

Do Hyderabad students and visitors need a flight booking for the US consulate?
No. The US Consulate General in Hyderabad, opened in 2008 as the first new US diplomatic office in India since independence, serves Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.[1] The State Department's visitor page warns people not to lock in tickets before a visa has been issued.[2] Your DS-160 asks for intended dates; nobody at the interview window expects a PNR.
This matters in Hyderabad because so many applicants are students heading for US universities. Your I-20 and funding carry the file. A reservation adds nothing at the interview, so we would not buy one for an F-1 appointment. Where it can help is a parent's B-2 visit with a fixed graduation date: a short, defined round trip makes the plan easy to explain. That's optional, and it should be called a reservation, never a ticket.
Why your European visa is decided outside Hyderabad
For several countries Hyderabad is a collection point, not a decision point. Knowing which consulate actually examines your file tells you whose checklist and whose rules to follow.
- Germany: Schengen files from any VFS centre go to the Consulate General in Mumbai.[7] For long-stay visas, Telangana sits with the German consulate in Chennai, alongside Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.[6]
- France: the Bangalore consulate covers Telangana, and France keeps a Bureau de France in Hyderabad.[9]
- Italy: also Bangalore; you hand in at VFS in Punjagutta.[11]
- Japan: Telangana falls under the Consulate-General in Chennai.[12]
The practical effect: download the checklist published by the deciding consulate, not a generic one. Italy's Bangalore page, for instance, tells applicants to look for refundable tickets and hotel bookings in case of refusal.[11] That advice applies to you in Hyderabad too.

Routes from Rajiv Gandhi International that make sense
The airport's own airline directory is the best place to see who flies where from HYD. In October 2026 it listed, among others, Lufthansa to Frankfurt, British Airways to London, Emirates and flydubai to Dubai, Etihad to Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways to Doha, Singapore Airlines to Singapore, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia to Kuala Lumpur, Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong and Ethiopian to Addis Ababa.[14]
So a German file can show Hyderabad–Frankfurt direct, and a UK file can show Hyderabad–Heathrow, which British Airways also lists on its own Hyderabad page.[15] For the Netherlands, France or Italy you will normally connect, often through Frankfurt, London or a Gulf hub.
Gulf connections in late 2026: the airport's home page carried a passenger advisory that some international flights may be delayed or rescheduled because of the situation in the Middle East and related airspace restrictions.[16] If your reservation connects through the Gulf, check the PNR on the airline's site the evening before your appointment, so a schedule change doesn't surprise you at the counter.
A Hyderabad example: parents visiting a son in Frankfurt
Suppose a retired couple in Kukatpally want to spend three weeks with their son in Frankfurt from 10 December. They book a Schengen appointment at VFS Hyderabad for 20 November; the file will be decided in Mumbai.[7]
They order on 17 or 18 November. Both names, exactly as in their passports, go on a single Hyderabad–Frankfurt round trip. Their son's invitation letter and their travel insurance all show 10 December to 31 December. A direct Lufthansa routing keeps things simple for older travellers and for the officer reading the file. Once the visa arrives, they buy the real ticket, which may well be on the same flights.
After the visa: buying the real ticket from Hyderabad
A reservation is for the file. The flight you actually take is a separate purchase, and Hyderabad students in particular sometimes mix the two up.
Once the visa is stamped, check the dates it allows. A US student visa holder needs to know the university's reporting date; a Schengen visitor needs to fit inside the validity and the number of days granted. Then buy a ticket you can live with: a flexible fare if your plans may still move, the cheapest one if they will not. You are not obliged to fly the same airline or route as the reservation. Many people do, simply because they already checked that the route exists from HYD.
Granted a shorter stay than you requested? Shape the actual journey to fit the visa sticker and forget the earlier reservation. Nobody will hold the earlier itinerary against you; what matters at the border is that you leave on time.

How far ahead should a Hyderabad applicant order?
Two to three days before the appointment is our usual advice. The booking survives for 2 weeks at most, and the exact span is chosen by the airline holding it. Students who book everything the day their admission letter lands often find the reservation has expired by the time a consulate looks at it. For long-stay files that may sit with a consulate for weeks, only include a reservation if the checklist asks, and be ready to provide a fresh one if requested.
Applying from Andhra Pradesh or Odisha? Where Hyderabad fits
The US consulate in Hyderabad is the only mission on this page whose district reaches Odisha. That creates some odd journeys, because for European and Japanese visas Odisha looks east instead.

So someone in Visakhapatnam may interview for a US visa in Hyderabad, apply for France through Bangalore's consulate and for Japan through Chennai. Someone in Bhubaneswar faces Hyderabad for the US but Kolkata for almost everything else. When we build a reservation for either, we start it from the airport you would really use, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar or Hyderabad, with a domestic connection if needed. If you plan to drive to Hyderabad and fly from there, starting at HYD is fine; just say so in your cover letter.
What a good reservation from HYD should show
- Every traveller's full name, copied letter for letter from the passport's data page, with given name and surname in the right fields.
- A departure from Hyderabad or your real home airport and a return to the same place, unless you are moving onward.
- Arrival and exit dates that line up exactly with the invitation, hotel nights and insurance period.
- An airline that serves the route, ideally one from the airport's own directory.
- A PNR you have opened yourself on the carrier's website before the appointment.
Multi-city plans from Hyderabad
Some Hyderabad families combine two countries in one trip: a week with relatives in London, then ten days in Paris, or a Gulf stopover on the way to Europe. A reservation can show every leg on one PNR, which reads more clearly than three separate printouts. Two cautions. First, each visa application should show the trip as a whole, so a UK file mentions the Paris leg and the French file mentions London. Second, if one visa arrives and the other is still pending, you may need a fresh reservation for the later application because the first one will have lapsed. Order it close to that second appointment.

Hyderabad FAQ
Can I collect the reservation from an office in Hyderabad?

Do F-1 students in Hyderabad need a flight reservation for the visa interview?
No. The consulate in Nanakramguda does not ask for one, and US guidance is to wait for the visa before spending on air fares. Your I-20, financial evidence and answers carry the interview. Book your real flight after the visa is stamped and you know your reporting date.
Which German office handles a Telangana resident?
For a short Schengen visa, any VFS centre across the country will take the file, Hyderabad's included, and the Consulate General in Mumbai decides. For long-stay national visas, Telangana falls under the German Consulate General in Chennai, which also covers Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
Is there a French consulate in Hyderabad?
France has a Bureau de France in Hyderabad, but visa decisions for Telangana residents are made by the Consulate General of France in Bangalore, which covers Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. You can lodge your application at the VFS centre in Hyderabad.
My route connects through Dubai. Is that a problem?
No. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha are ordinary connections from HYD. In late 2026 the airport warned that some international flights may be rescheduled because of Middle East airspace restrictions, so open your PNR on the airline's site the evening before your appointment to confirm the times still match your other documents.
What does it cost and how can I pay?
It is ₹699 per traveller whether you want one way or there-and-back; every extra two legs of a multi-city plan cost the same again. Razorpay processes the payment, so UPI, Indian cards and netbanking all work. We have nowhere you could hand over cash.
My parents live in Vijayawada. Should their reservation start in Hyderabad?
Start it wherever they will genuinely board. If they plan to take a domestic flight from Vijayawada and connect, we can hold that sector too. If they will travel by road or train to Hyderabad and fly from HYD, starting there is fine. Either way, add a sentence to the cover letter so the officer sees why the route begins where it does.
How long does the reservation stay live?
Two weeks is the ceiling, and each airline decides its own cut-off. Place the order a few days ahead of your appointment. If an embassy keeps your file longer and asks for current travel plans, order a new reservation at that point.
