Stockholm's international residents are a varied crowd. Indian software engineers in Kista, Pakistani and Bangladeshi students at KTH and Stockholm University, Filipino nurses, Nigerian researchers and their families. Many have lived here for years on work or study permits and still hold passports that need visas for half the world. Because the embassies sit in Stockholm, almost every application you make happens right here in town. This guide explains which ones ask about flights, what they say in their own words, and how to keep travel safe while a permit extension is pending. Everything we do happens online; you will not find us in an office in Stockholm.

What does your Swedish permit card already cover?
More than many new arrivals realise. Migrationsverket says that with a valid work or residence permit you can travel out of Sweden and back for as long as the permit is valid, carrying "a valid passport and your residence permit card".[1] It adds that the same two documents let you move freely in the Schengen area for 90 days within a 180-day period.[1]
So a weekend in Copenhagen, a conference in Berlin or a summer week in Croatia needs no visa and no flight reservation for an embassy. The same Migrationsverket page warns that a non-Schengen country may need an entry visa.[1] That covers the UK, Ireland, the US, Japan and many others, and that is where flight plans come into the picture. Your Europe also reminds travellers that Ireland applies its own visa rules outside Schengen.[10]
Which non-Schengen visas ask about flights?
Here is how the authorities a Stockholm resident deals with most often handle travel plans, in their own wording where we could check it.
| Destination | Where you apply from Stockholm | Official wording on travel | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | Embassy of Japan in Sweden[7] | Preliminary itinerary with flight dates and flight numbers between Sweden and Japan[7] | A held reservation fits well |
| United States | US Embassy Stockholm[3] | Wait for the visa before paying for flights[4] | Not needed for the interview |
| United Kingdom | UKVI online, biometrics in Sweden[6] | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" on the less-useful list[5] | Usually skip it |
| Schengen states | No application with a valid permit card[1] | Not applicable | Nothing to buy |
| Back to Sweden on a D visa | Swedish embassy where you are[2] | Special events such as illness or a death in the family[2] | Ask the embassy what it needs |
Japan file due next week?

Why is Japan the visa where a reservation helps most?
Because its list asks for flight numbers. The Embassy of Japan in Sweden's temporary-visitor page asks applicants for a preliminary itinerary that includes flight dates and flight numbers between Sweden and Japan, along with preliminary hotel details.[7] It also asks residents to include a copy of the Swedish residence permit card where it applies.[7]
"Preliminary" is the useful word. The embassy is not asking you to pay for a ticket before it decides. A held booking shows exactly what it wants: a real airline, real flight numbers, dates that match your hotel plan. The page indicates applications open three months ahead of arrival at the earliest, with processing normally taking 10 to 15 working days.[7] Note that we could read the embassy's text only through its indexed version in October 2026, so open the page yourself before you apply.
Our timing tip: order the reservation the week you hand in the file, not when you first start planning. With 10 to 15 working days of processing and a hold that lasts up to 2 weeks, the booking may lapse before the decision. That is normal and acceptable, because it was a preliminary plan. Pay for actual seats after the visa is stamped.
Applying for a US visa from Stockholm
The embassy's visa page carries a standing notice that applicants "should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality".[3] If you live in Stockholm on a Swedish permit, the US Embassy on Dag Hammarskjölds Väg is your post.[3] That notice also refers to Presidential Proclamation 10998, a restriction affecting passport holders from 39 countries; it is worth checking the State Department list against your nationality.[3]
On flights, the State Department's line is simple: get the visa first, then pay for travel.[4] The DS-160 takes your intended arrival date and length of stay. We tell Stockholm customers honestly: you do not need us for a US interview. If you feel a printed plan helps you explain a short trip, order it a couple of days before, and call it a reservation if the officer asks.
What about the UK?
For a UK visitor visa, flights barely register. GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents lists "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among items that are less useful as evidence.[5] What it does want from a non-Swede applying here is "confirmation of legal residence, if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying".[5] That is your residence permit card, front and back, and any decision letter from Migrationsverket.
Transit is the exception. If you are flying through London on the way to somewhere else and need a transit visa, the guide asks for evidence that the outward journey from the UK "has been confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival".[5] "Confirmed" points to a ticket rather than a hold, so we would buy that onward flight. Biometrics happen at whichever centre in Sweden GOV.UK's finder shows when you apply.[6]
Planning a trip while your permit extension is pending
This is the most serious travel risk for Stockholm residents, and a reservation does not solve it. Migrationsverket says that if you travel after applying for an extension and need an entry visa to enter Sweden, "it may be difficult for you to return to the country".[2] It continues that because you need a valid permit to re-enter, "you may be forced to remain abroad" until a decision is made.[2]
There is a narrow safety valve. For special events, the agency's examples are sudden illness, a death in the family or important work assignments, you can apply for a national visa, a D visa, at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where you are.[2] Migrationsverket's travel page adds that you may otherwise need to wait for the decision outside Sweden.[1]
What we suggest in practice: if your old card is still valid on the day you would fly back, you are covered by it. If it expires while you are away, think hard before going. When you must travel, a reservation lets you work out dates and talk to your employer without buying a fare you may have to change. Buy the real ticket only once you know how you will get back in.
Which routes from Arlanda look natural on a reservation?
Most visa itineraries start at Arlanda, which Swedavia runs alongside Bromma Stockholm Airport.[8] For an itinerary that matches how residents really travel:
- Dubai: Emirates says it runs 7 flights a week between Stockholm and Dubai, a common link to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.[9]
- Tokyo: there is usually a connection, through a Nordic, central European, Gulf or Asian hub. For the Japan file, what counts is that the flight numbers and dates are real.
- London: frequent short flights; any carrier is fine as long as the dates match the form.

Example: a Kista engineer and a cherry-blossom trip
Say an Indian software engineer living in Sundbyberg, working in Kista on a Swedish work permit, wants ten days in Tokyo and Kyoto in early April. His Indian passport needs a Japanese visa.
He collects the embassy's list: passport, form, photo, employer's letter, three months of bank statements, copy of his permit card, and a preliminary itinerary with flight numbers and hotels.[7] He books refundable hotels, then orders a reservation from us: Arlanda to Tokyo Haneda via Helsinki out, Osaka Kansai back via Dubai, for the same dates as the hotels. He hands it in at the embassy in early March, which is inside the three-month window.[7] Once the visa is issued, he buys a real ticket for those dates. Nothing in his file pretends the reservation is paid.
Example: a KTH student on a London weekend
Now a Bangladeshi master's student at KTH, on a study permit, wants three days in London to see a cousin. She needs a UK visitor visa.
Her file centres on the permit card and admission letter, which show legal residence,[5] plus bank statements, the cousin's invitation and proof of the cousin's status. A flight booking is on the less-useful list,[5] so she leaves it out and saves the $9. That is the honest answer, and we would give it to her too.
Ordering from Stockholm in six steps
- Confirm you need a visa at all. For Schengen trips, your permit card and passport normally suffice.
- Read the destination's current checklist and note exactly how it describes the flight item.
- Enter the route, dates and names on our booking page, spelling each name exactly as in the passport.
- Pay $9 per passenger by debit or credit card through Razorpay.
- Look for our email about 10 minutes later; check spam or promotions folders.
- Check it yourself by entering the PNR and surname on the carrier's booking-lookup page. See how to verify a reservation.
Follow progress on our tracking page; the price page gives the fee in other currencies.
How long does a Stockholm reservation last?
At most a fortnight. The carrier fixes the real limit, and certain fares lapse earlier. Time the order for the week you hand in the file. If the embassy asks for an updated plan later, a new reservation is simple and costs the same.
What Stockholm residents should avoid
- Applying for a Schengen visa you do not need while your permit card is valid.
- Leaving Sweden after your card expires without a clear plan for re-entry.
- Booking under a name that differs from the passport, for example a shortened Swedish-style version.
- Presenting a reservation as a paid ticket, on any form or at any counter.
- Edited or generated PDFs. If the carrier has no record of it, it damages your file.
Stockholm FAQ
Do I need a visa to visit Norway or Germany from Stockholm?
Usually not. Migrationsverket says your passport and residence permit card let you move freely in the Schengen area for 90 days within 180 days. Norway and Germany are both in Schengen. If you want to visit a non-Schengen country such as the UK, Ireland or Japan, you may need an entry visa depending on your nationality.
Does the Japanese embassy in Stockholm want a paid ticket?
Its visitor-visa page asks for a preliminary itinerary with flight dates and numbers between Sweden and Japan, which a held reservation shows. We read that wording via the page's indexed text in October 2026, so confirm on the embassy's own site. If any document you receive says a confirmed ticket is required, follow that instead.
Where do I interview for a US visa if I live in Stockholm?
At the US Embassy Stockholm. Its visa page says applicants should book interviews where they reside or hold nationality, and Sweden counts as your residence on a valid permit. No flight booking is needed, and the State Department's guidance puts the visa ahead of any purchase.
Can I travel while my permit extension is being processed?
You can leave, but returning may be difficult if your old permit has expired and you need a visa to enter Sweden. Migrationsverket says you may have to remain abroad until a decision. For special events such as sudden illness or a death in the family, you can apply for a national D visa at a Swedish embassy.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Stockholm?
No. We run no office anywhere in Sweden; everything happens online. Fill in the booking form, pay $9 for each passenger with a debit or credit card, and the reservation reaches your inbox in roughly ten minutes. Print it at home, at work or at a library before the appointment.
Will the airline let me fly with this reservation?
No. It holds a seat under a genuine PNR, but because the fare is unpaid, Arlanda check-in desks will not accept it. After your visa is granted, buy the actual ticket on dates that match the visa. You may buy on the same route or a different one.
When should I order before my embassy appointment?
Within a few days of it. Holds run for up to 2 weeks; the exact length is the airline's decision. Order three weeks early and the PNR may already be gone when the embassy looks. If the appointment moves, simply order a new one nearer the new date.
