Melbourne is home to a huge number of people on temporary and permanent visas: international students in the CBD and Clayton, nurses and engineers on skilled visas, families who have just become permanent residents. Many of them still travel on Indian, Nepali, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Filipino or Chinese passports, which means Schengen, UK and US visas are a normal part of planning a holiday. The catch is that Australia does not handle these the way you might expect. Germany does not process its own short-stay visas here, for instance. This guide walks through who decides what, how they word the flight item, and what we would do in your shoes. We are an online business with no Melbourne office.

Why does a German visa from Melbourne go through Austria?
Because Germany has handed that job over in Australia. The German missions' own page says "The Austrian Embassy in Canberra is responsible for issuing Schengen Visas on behalf of Germany in all States and Territories of Australia."[3] Applications go in personally, either at VFS Global or at the Austrian Embassy itself, and the German Consulate General in Sydney "cannot accept these applications".[3] German honorary consuls in Australia cannot take visa applications or advise on them either.[3]
There is a residence condition too. The same page says you can apply in Australia only if you have been legally residing here for over 6 months; short-term visitors are turned away.[3] A student who landed at Tullamarine in July cannot lodge a German Schengen application here in October.
Now the flight wording, which is the good news. The Austrian Embassy Canberra lists "Proof of the means of transport (reservation OR booking; presentation of a paid ticket is not required)".[4] That is about as clear an invitation for a held reservation as any consulate writes. The embassy also says to lodge within six months of travel and no later than 15 calendar days before, and that processing should not exceed 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.[4]
How do Melbourne's missions word the flight item?
| Destination | Where a Melbourne resident applies | Official wording | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany / Austria | VFS or Austrian Embassy Canberra[3] | "reservation OR booking; presentation of a paid ticket is not required"[4] | Held reservation |
| Netherlands | VFS Melbourne[7] | "You do not need a paid travel ticket"[8] | Held reservation |
| Italy | Consulate General Melbourne[5] | "reservation of return or round ticket" with a detailed itinerary[6] | Held reservation |
| United States | US Consulate General Melbourne[1] | Visa first, ticket purchase afterwards[2] | Not needed |
| United Kingdom | UKVI online, biometrics in Australia | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" less useful[9] | Usually skip |
Notice how consistent the Schengen side is. Three different authorities, three phrasings, one message: show a plan, you do not have to pay for it yet.
Lodging a Schengen file in Melbourne?
$9 per traveller by card; the PDF arrives in roughly ten minutes and opens on the airline's own site.
What proof of Australian status do Schengen missions want?
Expect to show your visa status as well as your address. The supporting-documents list used for short-stay applicants in Australia, published by the Italian Embassy in Canberra, starts with "proof of residence" and "proof of visa status - VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online)".[6] VEVO is the Home Affairs service for checking your current visa details and conditions online.[12]
Two practical points from our side. First, print the VEVO result within a few days of lodging, so its date sits close to everything else in the file. Second, if your visa expires soon after the trip, think about how that looks. A consulate wants confidence you will come back to Melbourne, and a bridging visa or a permit ending a week after your return flight may prompt questions. That is not something a reservation can fix; it is about timing your trip.
Applying to Italy from Melbourne
Go to the consulate that covers where you live. The Italian Embassy states that members of the public may only attend the consular office with jurisdiction over their residence, and gives the example that someone "living in Melbourne cannot apply for services at the Consulate in Canberra".[5] The Consulate General is at 509 St Kilda Road.[14]
The common list for Australian applicants asks for a "reservation of return or round ticket, including confirmation of the booking of an organised trip including a detailed itinerary".[6] The word is reservation, so a held booking matches. If you are touring several countries, make sure the itinerary shows Italy as the main destination or the first entry, as the Schengen rules expect.
US visa interviews in Melbourne
The US Embassy says consular services in Australia are offered by the consulates in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, that the Canberra embassy "does not process visa applications", and that immigrant visas are handled only in Sydney.[1] For a visitor visa, Melbourne is your post. A notice on that page tells applicants to interview where they live or where they are citizens, and points to Presidential Proclamation 10998, which limits visas for 39 nationalities.[1]
No flight booking is required. State Department guidance says the ticket can wait until the visa is issued.[2] If you want a printed plan to explain dates, order it a couple of days before the interview and describe it as a reservation.
Do you need a flight booking for a UK visa from Melbourne?
Generally no. GOV.UK puts "flight bookings (unless transiting)" on its list of less useful evidence for visitors.[9] What it does expect from someone who is not Australian is "confirmation of legal residence, if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying".[9] Your VEVO printout and visa grant letter do that job. For a transit visa, the guide wants a confirmed onward journey within 48 hours of arrival, and we would buy that fare rather than hold it.[9]
Coming home to Melbourne: the Resident Return visa
Permanent residents often forget this until they are packing. Home Affairs explains that if you are overseas, or want to travel, when the 5-year travel facility on your permanent visa ends, you need a Resident Return visa to come back as a permanent resident.[10] Check the travel facility date in VEVO before you lodge any outbound visa.[12]
Why mention it here? Because a Schengen officer looking at your file sees the return flight to Melbourne and assumes you can use it. If your facility runs out mid-trip, sort out the RRV first.
Which flights from Tullamarine read naturally?
International flights use Terminal 2 at Melbourne Airport.[11] Some routes the airlines publish themselves:
- Dubai: Emirates lists 14 weekly Melbourne–Dubai flights on its route page.[13] A natural routing to Frankfurt, Vienna, Amsterdam or Rome.
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines says it flies Melbourne–Singapore nonstop.[15] Its onward network covers most of Europe.
One stop to Europe is entirely normal from Melbourne, so nobody will query a connection in a Gulf or Asian hub. What matters is that your Schengen entry and exit dates match the application form.

Example: a Point Cook family going to Munich
Picture an Indian couple in Point Cook, both on skilled visas for three years, planning two weeks in Bavaria and Salzburg with their son in late April. They are past the 6-month residence threshold, so they can apply in Australia.[3] Germany is the main destination, so the file goes to VFS for the Austrian Embassy, which issues German Schengen visas here.[3]
They book a VFS appointment in Melbourne in mid-March, at least 15 days before departure.[4] Three days before it, they order one reservation with all three names: Melbourne to Munich via Dubai, back from Vienna via Dubai. VEVO printouts, payslips, the school's leave note and hotel bookings all show the same dates. Because the embassy says a paid ticket is not required, they buy real seats only once the visas are stamped.[4]
Example: a Nepali student and a summer in Italy
A Nepali master's student in Carlton, two years into her course, wants a fortnight in Rome and Florence during the break. Italy is the only Schengen country on her plan, and she lives in Victoria, so she books the Italian Consulate General on St Kilda Road rather than Canberra.[5]
Her list asks for proof of residence, a VEVO check and a reservation of a return ticket with an itinerary.[6] She orders the reservation, Melbourne–Singapore–Rome and back, the week of her appointment. She also checks that her student visa runs comfortably past her return date, because a consulate looks closely at that. If it did not, we would tell her to fix the visa first and the flights second.
Ordering from Melbourne
- Work out which authority decides, using the main destination and your state of residence.
- Download its current checklist and read the travel line word for word.
- Add the itinerary and each traveller on our booking page, copying names from the passports.
- Pay $9 per passenger by card through Razorpay.
- Check your email around 10 minutes later, including junk folders.
- Retrieve the PNR on the airline's site. Our guide to verifying a reservation shows how.
Track any order on the tracking page; currencies are on the price page.
When should you order before a VFS appointment?
Two to four days before. Expect the PNR to stay live for no more than 2 weeks, on terms each airline sets for itself. With Schengen processing of up to 15 calendar days, sometimes 45,[4] the hold may lapse during processing. That is normal for a reservation, and the embassy has said it does not need a paid ticket. If it asks for an updated plan, order a new one.
Mistakes Melbourne applicants make
- Taking a German Schengen file to the German consulate. In Australia it goes through VFS or the Austrian Embassy.
- Applying before 6 months of legal residence where the German rule applies.
- Booking Canberra for an Italian visa when you live in Victoria.
- Forgetting the travel facility on a permanent visa.
- Calling the reservation a paid ticket, or using an edited PDF that the airline cannot find.
Melbourne FAQ
Who processes German tourist visas in Melbourne?
The Austrian Embassy in Canberra, on Germany's behalf. German missions say Austria issues Schengen visas for Germany in all Australian states and territories, and that you lodge in person at VFS Global or the Austrian Embassy. The German Consulate General in Sydney and the honorary consuls cannot accept these applications.
Is a held reservation enough for a Schengen visa from Australia?
For the Austrian Embassy, which also covers Germany, yes on paper: its list says a reservation or booking is enough and a paid ticket is not required. The Netherlands also says you do not need a paid ticket, and Italy asks for a reservation. The consulate still makes the decision on the whole file.
Must I show flights at my US interview in Melbourne?
No. The US Consulate General Melbourne handles visitor visas, and the State Department advises against buying tickets until the visa is issued. The DS-160 only asks for intended dates. A reservation is optional and should be described as a reservation if you bring one.
I arrived in Melbourne four months ago. Can I apply for a German visa here?
Not under the German missions' rules. They accept applications in Australia only from people legally residing here for over 6 months, and say they cannot accept files from people staying for a shorter period. You would need to wait or apply where you were previously resident, subject to that mission's rules.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Melbourne?
No. There is no DummyTicketPrice shopfront anywhere in Australia. Victorians order through the website, pay the $9 fee per traveller by card, and get the reservation as an email attachment around ten minutes later. Print it at home, at uni or at a library before your VFS or consulate appointment.
Can I check in at Tullamarine with the reservation?
No. A genuine PNR without a paid fare will not produce a boarding pass at Tullamarine. Once your visa is granted, buy the actual ticket for matching dates. You can use the same airline and route or choose another. Keep the reservation PDF with your visa papers in case anyone asks about the original plan.
How long does the reservation stay valid?
For a fortnight at most; the carrier determines the real limit and some cut it shorter. Order a few days before your appointment. If the appointment is rescheduled, a new reservation closer to the new date keeps the PNR live when it is checked.
Order your Melbourne reservation
Ordered online, $9 each, and you can confirm it yourself on the carrier's website.
Please note: a flight document cannot obtain a visa on its own. Present it as a reservation, keep your dates consistent across the file, and leave the decision to the consulate.
